On Friday, October 18, a group of students headed to Black Rocks on Presque Isle to create "Earth Art" using fallen leaves and puddles. We met up with Art and Design instructor, Taimur Cleary, to talk about the project:
"I created the [NMU Earth Art] Facebook group to share images of the work we do in projects like these which only occur once or twice a semester as part of departmental programming. Instructors lead short projects, discussions, and demonstrations that are open to participation to all Art and Design students.
I have always had an interest in Earth Art, and especially collaborative art-making practices. With the help of students, we have been able to work on a much larger scale - as you can see, scale makes a big difference. These students spent over three hours on this project.
Students get credit for attendance, and hopefully the chance to participate in a kind of art-making that they may not have engaged otherwise. Not all students are open to working collaboratively, and many have little to no familiarity with the performative, ephemeral practice of Earth Art (also sometimes called Land Art, Earth Works.)
The mission is to make more work as a coordinated group than any of us could as individuals. We hope the work is beautiful, but would also remind people that the images are not the same as encountering the work in the landscape. After we finished the project, it was very fun to hide back and watch unsuspecting people encounter the work. The surprise, curiosity, wonder, and change in perspective are also all aspects of the work. That the work changes and fairly quickly is gone, is also important. It relates it to the landscape, and it is important to document the work/process with pictures."
Make sure to follow the group on Facebook to keep up with future projects: https://www.facebook.com/nmuearthart

What Makes A Wild Cat - with Shirley Brozzo
MARQUETTE, Mich -- Shirley Brozzo, Associate Director of the NMU Multicultural Education and Resource Center (MERC) and Contingent Professor with the Center for Native American Studies, discusses what she's most proud of from her work at Northern, something she'd still like to learn, and what the MERC offers students.
NMU: Hey, Shirley, can we ask you some questions?
Shirley Brozzo: Sure, that would be great.
NMU: What's your official job title?
Shirley Brozzo: I am the Assistant Director of the Multicultural Education Resource Center here on campus, as well as a contingent professor with the Center for Native American Studies.
NMU: What does your job entail?
Shirley Brozzo: So I work with all of the diverse populations on campus including the LGBT population.
NMU: What are you most proud of from your work?
Shirley Brozzo: [I’m proud of] being one of the students involved in starting the minor Native American studies and now I teach in the program.
NMU: If you could tell our college students one thing what would it be?
Shirley Brozzo: That it does get better.
NMU: What are ways a student can get involved with the Center for Native American Studies?
Shirley Brozzo: I would say come and take one of our classes or come to one of the events that we offer.
NMU: Your favorite quote?
Shirley Brozzo: Breathe.
NMU: Something you'd still like to learn?
Shirley Brozzo: Oh, I really want to learn the Anishinaabe language.
NMU: Lunch with the historical figure, who would be?
Shirley Brozzo: That would be Rosa Parks. We share a birthday!
NMU: Your favorite spot on campus.
Shirley Brozzo: That would be the MERC office where I work! The MERC!
NMU: What does MERC stand for?
Shirley Brozzo: MERC is the Multicultural Education and Resource Center here on campus.
NMU: What's a resource available to students you'd like to share?
Shirley Brozzo: We always have our free printing and our printing room over here. We also have free coffee and tea and we can have snacks available for you.
NMU: How can students get involved with the MERC?
Shirley Brozzo: So just walk through the door. Everyone get services.
NMU: What's one thing that makes Northern forward thinking.
Shirley Brozzo: I think that's our nest here that we have. It's a resource room. It's the only one in the U P for LGBT population. You can come in. You could take a check out a book or a movie come in and study hang out have some fun.
NMU: What inspires you?
Shirley Brozzo: I'm inspired I think by little children because they're so open and honest with everything they say.
NMU: What's one word to describe Northern students?
Shirley Brozzo: To describe northern students, I would say determined.
NMU: What do you do outside of work?
Shirley Brozzo: I love to knit and crochet and play with my grandchildren.
NMU: You're a member of the President's Committee on Gender and Sexuality. What's that mean?
Shirley Brozzo: That means we work to find equity between all of the genders and all of the sexualities here on campus. We make sure everybody's equal.
NMU: Alright, Shirely, last question. What makes a Wildcat?
Shirley Brozzo: A Wildcat is somebody who is really determined, really successful. Someone with persistence.
NMU: All right thanks, Shirley.
Shirley Brozzo: You’re welcome!

Over the next two weeks, we are going to be featuring a few of our EcoReps on campus. Today, we’d like you to meet Jalen Sims, a graphic design student from Waterford, MI. We asked Jalen a few questions about his experience at Northern and his involvement in EcoReps:
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
Jalen: I came to NMU because of the opportunity not only in the outdoors but also within the university and Marquette community. There is so much to do here compared to my hometown and the overall vibe of the city is amazing.
What do you like about your major at NMU?
Jalen: I like that the professors in my department focus on collaboration rather than competition. I also like that I am able to learn new skills that allow me to express my creative personality to the fullest.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
Jalen: Something cool or interesting that I have done as a part of my major is starting my own clothing company. Jalen Supply Co. is a direct result of me having graphic design skills because I can peak visual interest on the clothes that I sell.
What are you involved with on campus?
Jalen: I am Outreach Director for EcoReps, which is an organization focused on sustainability at NMU and in the Marquette area. I am also a member of Anchorpoint, which is the creative club on campus.
Of your activities on- or off-campus, what has been the most rewarding and why?
Jalen: I think EcoReps has been the most rewarding because I am able to express my creative abilities through video and promotional work. I also think this is most rewarding because I can see positive change happening in the community and on campus.
Further comments about your NMU experience?
Jalen: I could not see myself at any other school. Northern has provided me with amazing opportunities and has given me a space to create fruitful relationships with so many individuals.
