Let’s make a record. A contract. Rule number one. We promise to never get into each other’s business. Rule number two... No matter how much work gets to us... we never bring it home. We should also say that... No matter how much life gets to us that we shouldn’t bring it to work. Is that it? Any other rules? Just one. That we promise to be there for each other. Always. No matter what. Always.

Who's going to remember us? It's a question that all of us who do this job, we ask ourselves at one moment or another."

So much new blood at these days, pretty soon the people who never knew Shay are gonna outnumber those of us who did. And they should know whose shadow they’re walking in.

She was my best friend - Stellaride
Tumblr media
Fandom: One Chicago
Pairing: Kelly Severide, Stella Kidd & Leslie Shay
A/N : Pure heartbreak 🥲 my all time favorite one shot I ever wrote.
•••
After Casey moved out of the apartment, Kelly and Stella’s relationship only kept progressing so they decided to start looking for a new place to move in, that would feel more homey and cozy rather than the big industrial loft that still held so many of their memories for the past few years.
With moving came a lot of packing which was the least exciting part of the whole process. As Kelly was out all morning buying some more storage boxes, Stella was left emptying a few last drawers before being completely done. She quickly came across a stack of CDs and one in particular stood out as it had the words ‘The Contract’ written on it. While usually not being one to snoop around, she frowned debating whether she should play it or not, ultimately deciding for it as curiosity took the best of her.
“Is it on? It’s on!” Kelly’s voice echoed through the room as he appeared on the big screen. “The contract, rule number one” a womanly voice could be heard immediatly followed by Kelly’s again “We promise to never get in each other’s business…Rule number two, no matter how much work gets to us we promise to never bring it home.” The camera turned around revealing Shay holding a bottle of tequila and a smile immediatly appeared on Stella’s face. She had never heared Shay’s voice and the only picture she saw of her was the one hanging on the wall at the firehouse, as Kelly did a great job at burying old memories that brought him so much pain. “We should also say that no matter how much life gets to us, we should never bring it to work. Because what we do is so much more important than all this.”
“Is that it? Any other rules?” Kelly could be heard asking as she passed the bottle of tequila to him.
“Just one! That we…we promise to be there for each other…always, no matter what.”
“Always”
Hearing someone clearing his voice behind her Stella jumped at the sight of Kelly standing in the doorway. He’d been there a while watching most of the CD play out.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to snoop through your stuff” she tried excusing herself just to be interrupted by him. “It’s fine, don’t sweat it.” Kelly sat down on the floor next to her, letting a deep breath out and pulling a box out of the drawer filled with pictures.
“You never told me much about her…” Stella said unsure, waiting to see how he’ll react so she’d know whether to drop it or not.
"She was my best friend…the purest soul I ever met, the only person I could trust for the longest time. On her first day at 51, my roommate had just moved out and she said she was looking for a new place to stay…so she moved in with me. We just clicked, like I never clicked with anyone before then…I can’t even explain it. We used to get on each other’s nerves sometimes but at the end of the day we only wanted the best for each other…we never fully respected this contract. When I injured my shoulder once on a call, she’d give me painkillers…took them from ambo and used to blame it on junkies stealing them during inventories. She’d went through so much trouble just because I was hiding an injury that would bench me for a few months…and I was so selfish because never once did I think about the possibility of her losing her job for what she was doing for me. At some point I wasn’t far from being addicted to them…I went cold turkey and in a matter of weeks I was clean…but just because she was there for me and never let me lose my focus. Then her ex showed up pregnant out of the blue, saying she still had feelings for her…which didn’t turn out too good but after that Shay kept saying she wanted a baby so bad and I thought it was some weird phase she was going through, but next thing I know we were at a fertility clinic talking about IVF and all these other procedures, but that fell through too…and that’s one of my biggest regrets, because now I’d still have a part of her here with me. Each time we fought it was because she wanted the very best for me and I didn’t want to listen and she kept pushing…man she was so stubborn. One time there was this bombing at Med, casualties everywhere and she stumbled, impaling herself in some kind of metal sticking out of the debris…she was losing so much blood but she patched herself up and kept working until she passed out…we barely kept her in bed, she wanted to go right back into the action. The days before her death we fought and we made up right before she went in that building…the building I carried her out of. Each morning after that I was waking up going to her room and hoping she’d be there…nagging me about eating her yogurt. You don’t realize how many useless fights you have with someone until they’re gone…you don’t appreciate them enough until they’re not there anymore one day. After her death I dissappeared for a while…I couldn’t go back home or to work, the thought of her was too painful and apparently it still is after all these years. When she died, I know a part of me went with her…something inside of me shifted and I wasn’t the same after that day. I wish you would’ve met her though…she would’ve loved you to the point where she would’ve tried to steal you from me.“ The two shared a laugh as Kelly’s voice slowly became more and more shaky and Stella gave his hand a comforting squeeze.
"I wish I’d met her too…I know we would’ve easily hit it off. ” Stella said looking at the pictures in front of her. “I’m sure if she was still here, she would be so proud of who you’ve become.”
“She would’ve kicked my ass so bad, each time the two of us had an argument…or each time I remotely made you upset.” He said as a small smile crept on his face at the thought of Shay scolding him when it came to relationships.
“Do you believe in soulmates Kelly?” Stella asked reciving a confused look from him in return “Because I think she was yours.”
“Then what are you?” He asked turning himself around to face Stella. “Hmm, I don’t know…but soulmates don’t have to be lovers, a soulmate is someone who gets you and connects to you on a level you can’t explain, it’s someone who inspires you to be a better person, someone you can carry with you forever and no matter what happens the love you have for them never dissappears…it’s you and Shay.”
Kelly thought after all these years he’d be able to say more than a few words about her without tears immediately appearing in his eyes, but oh boy he was so wrong. Shay will forever live on in his heart and he promised himself he’d never let her memory be forgotten.

That A Dark Day / 8.30 crossover always makes me so emotional.
Shay collapsed right after she heard that they had found Dawson and that she was okay. It's as if she was holding on until she knew that Dawson was okay. Forcing herself to be okay until she knew about Dawson.
Severide being there when Shay woke up. Lord knows how long he'd been in her room, waiting for her to wake up.
As Severide left, he held her hand and kissed her hand for a few seconds. He just cares about her so much.

One Chicago Rewatch Recap
So I recently decided I wanted to do a full rewatch of Chicago Fire, PD, and Med because it's been a while since I initially started watching all of these shows back in 2021. I just finished season 1 of Fire and I have so many thoughts: *Peter Mills! I completely forgot that he existed but I remember the first time watching it not liking him? But I can't remember why because so far he's great. *Shayveride having the most wholesome friendship hits so much different now *On that note, I really wish they would've been able to have a baby together, I think it would be so cool to see Kelly with a 10ish year old now in the current seasons. *Otis :( *Everyone looks so young!!! *What was the reason for the show to introduce Jimmy, Boden's stepson, only for him to never be mentioned or talked about ever again *Herrmann and Cindy being the original wholesome power couple in the franchise god I love them *I've never been a Dawsey shipper but I love the pining and tension between them in season 1 *Voight being the main antagonist for the first half of this season is so funny to me. The way his character is written is just *chefs kiss* *Also the entire PD backdoor pilot episode is incredible (and so was Meds if I'm remembering correctly) *Scott Eastwood just. randomly being in a few episodes of this franchise sends me *I honestly forgot about the Molly's storyline so when Herrmann didn't just own a bar from the beginning I was a little confused *I completely forgot that Joe Cruz just straight up abandons a civilian (Flaco the gang member) in a burning building and then announces that the floor is cleared but it made me CACKLE I will always ride at dawn for Joe Cruz, if Joe Cruz has 0 fans I'm dead Overall I love this season and it's nice to see how exciting the shows used to be with the original cast and everything. I do think out of all three shows, Fire has done the best job at staying consistently good and entertaining (although the arson investigation storylines are starting to drive me up the wall) Anyway I plan on doing these little updates whenever something major happens or at least once for the end of each show's season. Also if anyone is interested in a really helpful tool to watch all of these episodes in the proper order there's an amazing spreadsheet with all of the info on it that is kept up to date. Speadsheet made by @PetitCartonVert on tumblr and it is pinned on their page :)

We promise to never get into each others business. Okay. I have that recorded. I know. That’s whay I just said it. All right. Rule number two... no matter how much work gets to us, we never bring it home. Good. Very good. Thank you. Okay. You know what? That thing? Yeah? Here, give it here. Your turn. Give it here. All right, we should also say that... no matter how much life gets to us that we shouldn’t bring it to work. Because what we do is so much more important than all this. Fair enough. An addendum. 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼 . . .
You’ve been wanting to transfer to Firehouse 51 for a couple of months now. Ever since you met the paramedic Sylvie Brett, your life changed.
She instantly became your best friend and you honestly couldn’t remember what your life was like before meeting her.
Sylvie transferred to a new house after running away from her fiancé, which you could understand and she had been waiting for you to receive a matching transfer slip.
After Truck 81 opened up a new spot, Sylvie called you up and told you about the position. She knew you were aware of it but you had yet to tell her that you had received the job at the new firehouse she was working from in Chicago.
So there you were, walking into Firehouse 51 with a nervous smile on your face and a bag around your shoulder to keep in your locker till the end of shift.
The doors of the firehouse were open all possible hours for the public, so you let yourself slip through the side door, automatically stumbling across a table and a group of three guys sitting around it.
You glanced away to look around, not realizing that someone already noticed your presence.
Severide thought you were the most attractive woman he’d ever seen, besides his best friend Shay of course and got up from the Squad table to introduce himself.
Of course with his luck, Otis and Cruz were already barreling over towards you.
“Hey, you must be Y/N! My name is Brian but they usually just call Otis around here. Oh, and I’m from Truck 81 as well.” He smiled at you and you couldn’t help but grin at the duo.
“Yeah that’s me. It’s nice to meet you Otis, and you are?” You shook Otis’ hand and then gestured towards his friend.
Cruz blinked a couple of times and after realizing he hadn’t told you who he was yet, he chuckled. “Oh, I’m Joe Cruz. I used to be a part of Truck 81 but I recently moved to Squad 3. My lieutenant is over here actually…”
He trailed off and glanced over at the same exact table that you had noticed only a few moments ago. "Hey Severide, our newest recruit for Truck is over here!”
Severide looked at Cruz and took note of how he was frantically waving his hand over at him and sighed. Knowing he couldn’t ignore or back down now, Severide glanced down at his phone that was sitting flat down on the table in melancholy.
Severide used it as a shield to occupy himself when he didn’t want to be bothered, but of course Cruz caught him before he could pick it up. Instead, he pocketed it into his iconic Squad 3 jacket and placed his palms down on the table before getting up.
Cruz observed Severide’s facial expression and detected some hesitation. Knowingly realizing that he was nervous of a woman.
His new recruitment smirked but Severide was too busy worrying about making a good first impression that he didn’t catch it, otherwise he’d be getting Cruz back for it.
You glanced to the side of Otis and Cruz and immediately met the eye of the Lieutenant for what you assumed was Squad 3.
He had brunette hair that you wanted to run your fingers through, broad shoulders and the most amazing blue eyes that you knew you could have gotten lost in.
Guess they weren’t kidding about firefighter men’s physiques and attractiveness.
You almost wanted to ask him if he had a calendar but decided quickly against it. After all, it’d be awkward if Severide held it against you.
“Hi, Severide.” You spoke with a dangerous smile on your lips, a twinkle in your eyes. He kept his eye trained on you while walking over.
Cruz and Otis could sense the sexual tension so they quietly announced their exit.
“Kelly. Kelly Severide. Hey, Y/N.” He responded and tried to hide how spiked his nerves were with a smirk. It was useless though when Severide figured it was obvious with the way he continuously swept a hand through his hair and messed it up.
“Y/N Y/L/N, hi Kelly. Two peas in a pod, huh?” You gestured to the two guys walking away and Severide raised a brow. “Them? Yeah, they have been for a while now. The enthusiasm they have is definitely something else.” He chuckled.
You slapped his shoulder playfully, not realizing the effect you had on him. Severide stood frozen with his eyes trained on the area that you lightly tapped. All he could do was stare down at the spot you had touched on his forearm like you had burned it, but instead he was trying to commit the action to his memory.
The way your fingers perfectly shaped around his biceps was something he wanted to experience again soon.
“Hey, leave them alone! I think they’re kind of sweet.” You admitted jokingly and he shook his head with an amused grin. “Should I show you around?” He asked while sliding his hand into his pocket, palming the phone again in nervousness.
You nodded eagerly, ready to see Sylvie after realizing her rig was a few feet away from you in the garage where you were standing with Severide. “Yeah Sylvie and I go way back. I’m excited to see her.” You admitted.
He chuckled, “You know Brett? So you’re that Y/N?” Severide’s eyebrow raised when he glanced at you. Shrugging and a little confused you asked, “What does that mean?”
“She talked about a friend that she had at home and how she missed them.” He replied vaguely and you chuckled, “Sounds like her. We’ve been friends since junior high. About a month or so ago she told me about the position but still doesn’t know that I got it.” You smirked.
He opened the doors to the entrance and gestured for you to walk in. “Oh you’re surprising her? She’ll love that.” Severide chuckled and you smiled at him, ignoring the hint of sarcasm but that didn’t matter because he was starstruck by the grin you gave him.
You were definitely going to be in trouble in the near future for him, especially with the way Severide already knew he’d be agreeing to anything you asked of him.
“Who’s this?” A blonde asked when you turned. The two of you have been chatting in the hall, when you walked through the doors he had you step to the side to continue the conversation.
Shay had just walked out of the bathroom and saved you from answering Severide. And you couldn’t help but check her out the same way you had with Severide.
Her blonde hair was long and wrapped up in a ponytail. And you felt a little guilty when you fantasized about pulling some of it in your hand. She also had the most amazing figure.
And you knew instantly that you were caught when you met her eyes, the glimmer in them showing that she was amused by your action. You wondered if Severide noticed earlier and was just laid back or if he was dense like any other guy.
Openly checking out two attractive people was not something that you had on your radar today.
Nonetheless, having the same look in your eye when you checked out Severide and Shay was troubling to say the least. “Hey, I’m Y/N Y/L/N.” You grinned and adjusted the jacket around your shoulders.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Leslie Shay.” She greeted and you couldn’t help but eye her outfit. “You’re a paramedic.” You said more as a statement than a question when you came into realization that she knew Sylvie.
“That I am.” She smirked and blinked after realizing that you may have said that for a reason. “Are you looking into working here?” Shay added and then applied some chapstick that was in her pocket from earlier when she and Sylvie stopped at a convenience store.
“Well it’s actually my first day here. I took the Truck position that was open.” The blonde was happy for you, but on the inside she was struggling because you were so attractive and now her co-worker. “Wow, that's great. Congratulations.”
“Thanks, I’m looking forward to it—” You supplied but became sidetracked when another blonde ran up to you and instantly wrapped her arms around you. “Y/N I’m so glad you’re here!” Sylvie pulled back to get a look of you, to make sure that you were actually standing in front of her.
“Wait, what are you doing here?” She asked. Sylvie really wanted to assign you as her ride along today if you came to visit but she was crossing her fingers that you were here permanently.
You bit your bottom lip and grinned, turning to glance at Severide and Shay who were watching the whole interaction.
“I got the position here! All my stuff is in the hotel for now though until I can find a place to live. Do you know of any good places to stay?” You questioned and Sylvie smirked.
“Well, I’ve been living with Matt. But I know just the right people if you don’t mind roommates. Cruz and Otis have been looking for another person to stay in the third room of their apartment. Have you met them yet?”
You rolled your eyes playfully, remembering the pair that had met you by the door. “Yeah Otis and Cruz actually greeted me first, they seem like a nice bunch.” You chuckled and Sylvie laughed and then smiled at you before turning to her Paramedic and the Lieutenant of Squad.
“Mind if I borrow her for a few?” She asked and they shrugged. “Sure.” Severide said and Shay replied, “No problem.”
Your blonde best friend led you away and you turned back, glancing once more at the pair with a bright smile. “See you guys later.” And they nodded.
“So are you the PIC or is it Shay?” You questioned and Sylvie told you that she was the PIC but Severide and Shay paid no attention. Instead, they turned to each other when you and Sylvie walked around the corner and were officially out of their view.
“This is a problem, right?” Shay announced with a wince after they remained silent and watched you walk off.
“Yeah, this is definitely going to be a mess.” Severide glared, annoyed with the whole situation.
One thing Severide noticed once you were gone was that he must have unknowingly let go of his phone. Which was a huge shock that you were able to hold his attention like that.
And Shay liked how you challenged her and wasn’t ashamed to match her energy.
All in all, they were doomed with the thought of you.
