Tumblr media
@zzombiye - @zebraslovescupcakestoo great mind think a like ?

Shearing is a roller coaster, losing the fluffiness is so sad but nothing that a lollipop 🍭 can’t fix(?)
Takes a while make a ball of wool, since the sheep is so tiny, so for now saving for a future scarf or beanie.
Not gonna lie, this feel like a mammon’s plan

Being into Cult of the Lamb while also having gone thru that period where YouTube was convinced I was obsessed with sheep and llama shearing has given me a weirdly specific need to incorporate sheep facts into my cotl headcanons. Like specifically about wool and whatnot.
Sheep grow wool in excess because they were bred selectively to grow a lot of it, and while domestic breeds don’t shed their wool there are some kinds of sheep that still do. Depending on what kind of sheep the lamb is, they may not need a full shear every year, though even sheep that do shed their wool will need shearing from time to time. If we’re imagining the Lamb as a sheep that does not shed their wool at all, I’d imagine that they’d need help with it. Thinking about how a culture made up of sheep people would be built, perhaps shearing would be done by one’s family or those close to them due to how difficult shearing oneself would be, with their first shear being in their preteen/teenage years and being considered special. A virgin shear in real life is considered to be the highest quality of wool a sheep will ever produce due to how the fibers form and change with more shearing, so perhaps it would be sacred in some way. Since there are no seasons in the cotl universe, shearing for summer weather wouldn’t be as important but would still be done annually to prevent matting and heat stress.
I wanna research wool and shearing more I like sheeps.

So... I finally took a drop spindle spinning class after going back and forth about it for weeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The white yarn's what I spun in class. It's pretty lumpy, but it's got personality. I had a bunch of wool left over, so of course it got dyed a fun color the second I got home. In the meantime I watched a ton of spinning videos, which seemed to magically enable me to spin a finer yarn on my second attempt. Watching other people work really makes things click into place!

Here they are freshly plied! The difference between them is wild (to me). I have no idea what to use them for, but that probably won't stop me from making more.

I hc that Mabel uses her spider silk to knit, but before she realized she could make silk, Mabel would shave Dipper for wool. Poor boy.
Sheep legs were just not working for me today, so dipper looks a little funky in every picture. If anyone’s wondering why there’s a bug burger there, it’s because I wanted to draw their diets, and while trying to find an appetizing bug meal for Mabel on google images, I found this

Also a close up of my bug burger bc I’m actually really proud of it

Shears the dog they could never make me hate you. Also my headcanon for the bamboozlers sleeping arrangement is that they turned the bed onto its side, taking the pillow and blanket off and lowkey tying the mattress into the frame. They sleep leaned against it. They set it up again properly in the morning so people don't know how crazy they are.

Fiber Artist Problems
So if you get into historic clothing, and\or Fancy-Ass Yarn, you run into something that runs like this:
"(really fancy-ass technique) involved hand-plucking wool from the sheep, usually from the neck..."
However, this kind of sounds painful for the sheep.
And in case anyone's wondering, this is a sheep:
Tumblr media
So if you, say, aren't PETA, here's the logical question:
How the fuck is the human doing this not getting attacked by a furious lump of angry animal with hooves, horns, and no fucks given?
Well, turns out that The Great God Wikipedia actually had...kind of an answer.
I cannot even begin to tell you why, but this article on sheep shearing is almost completely Australia-focused, despite the fact that sheep shearing--you know, how you get wool OFF the sheep? Required to prevent sheep overheating? Haircuts 4 Sheeps, and they are THRILLED to do it with a razor like humans are also thrilled when their hair is annoying them?--is global.
But it DID have a fun line that runs thus:
In some primitive sheep (for example in many Shetlands), there is a natural break in the growth of the wool in spring. By late spring this causes the fleece to begin to peel away from the body, and it may then be plucked by hand without cutting – this is known as rooing. Individual sheep may reach this stage at slightly different times.
"Hand-plucked". Aha.
And a Google search presented this article. Which says:
Rooing your Shetland sheep! Your pure bred Shetland sheep loses it’s fleece naturally! This means you don’t need to shear or clip it off like you do with other sheep. You can simply pluck it off the sheep – it’s a bit like pulling hair out of a hairbrush! Sometimes the sheep might feel a tug, like we do when we get our hair brushed, but pulling the wool off doesn’t hurt the sheep.
(I took out the colors. You're welcome.)
So, if anyone's looked at the sentence ""(really fancy-ass technique) involved hand-plucking wool from the sheep, usually from the neck..." and wondered "what, and the sheep didn't fucking murder them?"...well, turns out: The wool naturally breaks.
The sheep is, as always, just getting a haircut. And I imagine the haircut also involves Hooman Pettings, which most domestic animals consider A++ Good Times.
This concludes today's episode of Research That Absolutely In No Way Needed Doing, And Yet I Have Done It Anyway.
