Hi!!!!!!!! I kinda just wanted to say i like Jev. Like a lot. Gush about him and Edoardo. And Sam. And i just love a lot of the boys ok
ok so this is a long boi, settle in
JEV. Ahhh god. Where can I even start with JEV? But like, in a totally different way to Lewis. I always liked JEV when he was in F1, he was funny and waspish and not very good at remaining strictly media trained. He was also fast as hell on the rare occasions he had a car to do so.
Until the 2014 season he’d always been kind of the cute French guy, used to hang with Daniel Ricciardo, you know. Fun STR vibes before online content was a thing so you just got the odd flashes of them being sweet in interviews and stuff rather than probably the whole McL-style shebang if had been today.
But 2014 was just like, relentlessly dark. He started the season starving himself to try to get down to his teenage teammate’s weight and ended up hospitalised with severe dehydration twice, which Marko used to slate him in the press and imply it was, like, substance abuse or something. Then of course there was Jules’ terrible crash, which hit him very hard (JEV and Jules were very close) and he lost his seat, had already started being ousted from his car for FP1 to put Verstappen in it by the time Suzuka happened. (neat, didn’t have to change the TLA...)
When he arrived in Formula E he was like, pretty dead behind the eyes. He was withdrawn and some people call it ‘difficult’ but I always got that he was just boiling over furious. Like there was all this horrible hurt and anger he was always only just holding off. Clinging to the Ferrari simulator role was terrible for him and for the first two seasons in FE it was like he was there-but-wasn’t.
Things came to a head, I think, in losing his seat at Virgin - he rowed with the team boss very severely and it explosively boiled over in Buenos Aires during a weird weekend where he was again hospitalised and the team tried to get him signed off from the race, while he tried to get himself cleared.
(stories abound about why JEV was hospitalised and it’s his to tell if he wants to - needless to say the popular paddock rumour about it being related to a notorious local sex worker is total fucking bullcrap)
Tumblr media
(JEV that weekend - the photo is Spacesuit/Shiv Gohil)
He was so unhappy when I first interviewed him in FE, like he could only distract himself momentarily from it and his results were as uncommitted as he seemed to be. You’ve got to remember, when he bought into Techeetah in Season 3 people said both that he was too difficult to get a drive anywhere else and that he was just like, a messy write-off.
I always hoped he’d recover, that he’d put himself back together. I’ve always got on with JEV and also there was like, a desperate hope for that narrative; you want the recovery story. The popular view was that he’d gone off the rails as a driver and would be pootling around the back forever, miles from the championship fight with a few scrappy podiums to his name.
Even at Season 3 testing, even after investing in a team, he was still hung up on things. The snub from F1 hurt him deeply, his pride was so wounded at not getting a chance that it was like anything threw him for a loop on it, even while he tried to move on with his life. He did an interview with then-magazine Current E where he spoke about it -
"I miss everything about F1. The roar of the engine. The braking. The grip. The speed. Everything’s different now."
And he was still wearing his Toro Rosso race boots, as some sort of bluntly visual metaphor.
It changed when he got Stephane Sarrazin as a teammate and really started to sort his head out. He’d been getting better for awhile, getting more control of the way things affected him and Sarrazin was a really positive influence for him. He took the win in Montreal, almost as a footnote because Lucas and Sebastien were setting off the fireworks as they had been for many seasons, and that was huge.
(I was so, so happy for him; he looked so relieved in the press conference, like he couldn’t believe that he hadn’t somehow lost it)
And then the rest is somewhat history. He’s one of the most successful drivers in Formula E (Sebastien has more wins and Lucas more points but JEV is the double champion) and if it felt like a wobbly and haphazard process at times, he’s become able to manage himself and the way he reacts to things. He smiles so much more now - which admittedly, more than ‘rarely, if ever’ is not hard but he looks happy.
He’s taken knocks and picked himself back up, come back to recover. Even the disastrous first race in New York last year, he pulled himself together after despite having a huge radio meltdown. Things don’t wound him deeply, he doesn’t pick at himself as much, he’s not magically fixed but he’s doing ok and he continually works on keeping that going, which I find really inspiring - for some of us there is no “gets better” but you can find ways of dealing.
I love him deeply. If you're not still a fan, still in awe of what the drivers do, then you should probably not be a motorsport journalist so I don’t think there’s any point in pretending I’m not.
This was my favourite moment of last season, maybe. He stole Jack Nicholls’ chair in the post-race press conference in Berlin and came to speak to me about And We Go Green, to say everything I said in it about him was true and like it was out of his own head. Which given how deep the film gets on him I was like. He didn’t have to say it (although I’d been terrified - I hadn’t seen the film yet at this point) and it was kind of him. He’s genuinely often kind - also genuinely often annoying but that’s overgrown cats masquerading as human beings for you - and I think he really appreciates that people didn’t give up on him a few years ago.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that’s prob enough for one post but like. I love them a lot.

As they say, a picture paints 1000 words.
Earlier today I saw a really cool concept shared on Twitter. Shea Serrano had a Getty photo of LeBron James’ clutch shot from Monday’s Cavaliers/Wizards NBA game. He then proceeded to break down the image and write exactly 1000 words about it (you can read his article here).
This is a hugely interesting concept, as not only do you get to analyse the image, but you have to really hone your writing skills to make the comment exactly 1000 words. So I thought I’d give it a go – mainly to challenge myself. For my piece, I’ve chosen a photo that makes me smile and should break down easily enough to write about.
Tumblr media
Thanks to Spacesuit Media for letting me use this, you can find their website and more about them on my current clients page. Photo taken by Shiv Gohil at the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours - June 2016.
Now I’m no journalist or professional writer, nor are my Photoshop skills anything to write home about, so this will probably be a bit rubbish, but I’ll give it a go! Here we go. 1000 words starting now:
The Man Himself
If you’re into motorsport, (or even if you’re not) you’ve most likely heard the Senna name. Be it Ayrton or Bruno, the iconic surname is branded into every racefan’s brain.
This motorsport moment features the latter Senna, Bruno. In 2016, he secured himself a seat in the FIA World Endurance Championship, racing with RGR Sport by Morand. Being a full season entry in WEC automatically gave the Mexican outfit a grid spot at one of the endurance calendar’s best loved races – the 24 Heures du Mans. So you can understand why he’s smiling. The Le Mans race is essentially a weeklong celebration of all things endurance racing and here you can see Bruno enjoying the driver’s parade which goes through the town of Le Mans itself. Armed with a Sharpie and ‘hero cards’, a driver is ready for any autograph or photo opportunity that comes their way – even if they’re dressed as silly English K-nig-hts.
The 84th running of the race was Bruno’s first time competing in a prototype since driving an Oreca in 2009. And while the rest of the world was busy focusing on the tragic end to Toyota’s epic race, the RGR squad were putting in a top-ten finish. Senna, alongside Filipe Alburquerque and Ricardo Gonzalez finished 15th overall but that’s 10th in class. You might say ‘that’s not that impressive’ but remember that the 24 hours is a tricky beast to tame, and though Bruno had previously driven Le Mans on three separate occasions he only managed to finish once. That 10th place is looking better now eh? Especially when you consider the sheer talent in the LMP2 field. 23 cars, over 60 drivers and 10 former Le Mans winners. As it happens, Signatech Alpine team found the perfect combination of talent, determination and luck and crossed the line first in class. Congrats to Nicolas Lapierre, Gustavo Menezes and Stephane Richelmi.
Knights of the Realm
This isn’t something you see every day. A bunch of grown men dressed in silly costumes? You’d be forgiven for thinking this was a student night out somewhere. It is however, just another day in Le Mans build-up week. Where nutters from all over the world (I am happy to count myself as one of them) come together to make up a weird and wonderful crowd.
There’s varying levels of commitment in this bunch – I am thoroughly impressed by the guy at the back who’s gone and got a helmet and everything. In contrast, his mate on the left who seemingly thought that nobody would notice if he just used the hood from his jacket. Come on man, you won’t be finding the holy grail looking like that. Though he does seem to have a strange, grey growth coming out of his shoulder – I got confused trying to work out whose sword that was. Don’t you just love the mind tricks that photos can play?
Let’s talk about the guy on the left for a minute. He might be taking his role a little too seriously. Everyone else looks happy and like they’re having fun. That guy looks like he’s stumbled straight out of an action movie via a Monty Python prop cupboard. It’s a very Vinnie Jones face. Does Vinnie like endurance racing? Has he ever been to Le Mans? Would someone go ask him please?
The Clearly Happy French(?) Man
When I say the words ‘Typical French Man’, what images spring to mind? If you said beret, striped shirt, red scarf and oodles of onions, clearly you’re not alone in your thinking. Whoever this man is, I applaud him for sticking to his French stereotype – it’s good for some amusement for the rest of us. The only thing he’s missing is a cigarette and maybe a twiddly moustache, but 10 out of 10 for effort.
The Manor flag sported by his largely obscured friend is a nice touch too. Well done to you if you spot him – I pretty much missed the guy completely. FYI it was a couple of onions that gave him away!
One Man Rebellion
Maybe he’s a Senna fan? Perhaps he missed the memo from his friends about being Knights? Or maybe he just wanted to get involved in the moment.
You can almost hear the noise he’s making just from his facial expression – that ‘wheeeyyyy’ sort of noise that has become synonymous with lads everywhere. This guy supports Rebellion and he’s going to do it in the manliest way he knows how. Go on my son.
‘I don’t know what’s going on but it looks hilarious’
I imagine myself having this face a lot.
That look when you see something utterly daft and you can’t help but smile (a smile mixed with a little bit of wtf, but a smile nonetheless.) And who wouldn’t chuckle at the scene occurring on this man’s right? A bunch of men dressed as knights posing with an incredibly smiley man in a onesie? It’s certainly enough to make me giggle.
Let’s take a step back…
For me, this image captures some of the many things about Le Mans that I love. The willingness of the stars to grant their fans wishes. The range of people brought together by a common passion. And just how silly it can all get. Nobody takes themselves too seriously – in the paddock or out of it.
If you’ve not made the journey to Le Mans (that’s also a good film by the way), do it. Seriously. Not only will you be treated to some spectacular racing, but you’ll become part of one of the best families out there. For the whole week, the area becomes a hub of happy, like-minded people – it’s like one big party. A party where you can meet your heroes and get up close to some of the most impressive machines in the racing world. Yeah, it’s pretty damn special.
Get yourself out there, and you’ll probably find yourself wearing a smile as big as Bruno’s.
Phew, that was tougher than I thought!
Thanks again to Spacesuit Media and Shiv for letting me use the image, to MotorsTV for sharing the LeBron James photo post and thanks to Shea Serrano for the original inspiration and format for this post!

Cong’s Digvijaya, JDU’s Harivansh, BJP’s former SC Morcha Chief get Rajya Sabha tickets
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/congs-digvijaya-jdus-harivansh-bjps-former-sc-morcha-chief-get-rajya-sabha-tickets/
Cong’s Digvijaya, JDU’s Harivansh, BJP’s former SC Morcha Chief get Rajya Sabha tickets
New Delhi |Mumbai: With the deadline for filing nominations to Rajya Sabha ending on Friday, several parties have declared their candidates.
BJP declared its second list of Rajya Sabha candidates, comprising five names, on Thursday. It fielded its former Scheduled Caste Morcha chief Dushyant Gautam from Haryana while RSS worker Sumer Singh Solanki pipped other contenders from Madhya Pradesh for a seat in the Upper House. Ramchandra Jhangra, an OBC leader from BJP, was also given the ticket from Haryana. The party fielded its former Himachal Pradesh Mahila Morcha chief Indu Goswami for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state. Bhagwat Karad, a former mayor of Aurangabad, was nominated by BJP from Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, Congress fielded Digvijaya Singh and Phool Singh Baraiya from Madhya Pradesh while party leader Rahul Gandhi’s handpicked general secretary (org) K C Venugopal was named from Rajasthan. Neeraj Dangi got the second Congress’ ticket from Rajasthan. From Gujarat, the party named Shaktisinh Gohil and Bharat Solanki. Rajeev Satav was nominated from Maharashtra. The Congress seat from Haryana went to former CM B S Hooda’s son Deepender Hooda after the senior Hooda blocked the renomination of Kumari Selja and efforts of Randeep Surjewala to bag the seat. The Congress list thus ended without Priyanka Gandhi being named for Rajya Sabha. Congress named KTS Tulsi and Phulo Devi Netam from Chhattisgarh, Shahzada Anwar from Jharkhand and Kennedy C Khyriem from Meghalaya. JDU announced the names of Harivansh and Ram Nath Thakur from Bihar. Both are outgoing members of the Upper House. Thakur is considered JDU’s MBC face in the state. The Congress list thus ended the talk of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entering the Rajya Sabha, for now.
RJD fielded Prem Chand Gupta, a close aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Amarendra Dhari Singh, Patna-based entrepreneur, for the two of the five Rajya Sabha seats that will go to poll. Shiv Sena nominated Priyanka Chaturvedi from Maharashtra. Although the last date to file nominations is Friday, candidates for only six of the seven seats in the state have been finalised. There is no clarity on who will be nominated for the lone seat.
The NCP, which has already filed a nomination for party chief Sharad Pawar, wants to send one more party leader to the Rajya Sabha.
