AOTD 1/31/2024 - We Like It Here (Snarky Puppy)
[All albums are rated subjectively based off my own enjoyment] 10/10
Tumblr media
I am going to forgo my usual format for this one.
This is a Fusion Jazz album, for the music nerds among us. A Musicians genre, if you will. Personally, I really love Fusion Jazz, finding myself basking in the almost ambience of Pat Methany, and the straight forward energy of Weather Report.
Snarky Puppy is now one of the Genre Mainstay Greats, in my eyes. Each main idea of every song is tight, with each one better than the last, fitting perfectly with the previous measures yet being a breath of fresh air, scarcely overstaying its welcome. The solos were dynamically intensive as they were crisp, tight, and Blazing at times. Frequently I found myself physically stimming to some of the better sections, squealing with joy and laughing maniacally during the highlights of each track. Just… Perfection all around.
The only song that felt repetitive in the slightest was Tio Macaco, a more Brazillian Jazz tune. Even though it's extended trumpet solo was awesome, it's accompanying riff felt like it lingered on for far too long, becoming a bit cheesy to my ears. Still, an 8/10 isn't much to sough at, but with the insane consistancy of the rest of the album, an 8/10 becomes somewhat of a sore point.
The highlights for me were the first two tracks, Shofukan and What About Me?. Given as they're both 6+ minute Odysseys that through several main ideas, each culminating in some of the Finest music I've ever heard, I'm not going to be able to describe them well over text. What I can say though, is that those two songs immediately made me realize that this album had a Serious shot at a 10/10, and wouldn't you know it, the track list remained strong enough to pull it off.
Just everything about this album is fucking amazing. The composition, the groove, the solos, the energy, the dynamics, the range and variety, it's just… Perfect. Next to no notes. A+.
Overall, if you're any amount of a Music Nerd, listen to this album. This album is going to become a mainstay recommendation for me.
Favorite Tracks: Shofukan, What About Me?, Sleeper, Outlier, Kite, Lingus Least Favorite Tracks: Jambone, Tio Macaco
Sidenote: Shofukan and What About Me are going on my top 50 most likely. I just have to figure out which tracks to cull…
Shofukan - 10/10 What About Me? - 10/10 Sleeper - 9.5/10 Jambone - 8.5/10 Kite - 9/10 Outlier - 9.5/10 Tio Macaco - 8/10 Lingus - 9.5/10

Day 2 of my 12-Day Magical Mystery Tour
Day 1 - Odessa rehearsal Day 2 - Snarky Puppy concert Day 3 - MAPS Finals + NJPW Capital Collision show in DC Day 4 - GMU rehearsal Day 5 - GMU rehearsal Day 6 - GMU rehearsal + Chantilly sendoff Day 7 - drive to Dayton Day 8 - WGI Prelims Day 9 - WGI Semis Day 10 - WGI Finals Day 11 - drive home from Dayton Day 12 - Odessa rehearsal
Snarky Puppy concert was excellent. Opener was Nate Wood, who I know as the second drummer from those Knower live sesh videos. He was amazing. The set was fantastic from Snarky Puppy. 10/16 songs from Empire Central, all great. Then they closed the set with Shofukan and the encore was Lingus. Everything was amazing.
Everytime I see them, I’m impressed with a new member of the band. The first time it was Larnell Lewis and Bobby Sparks. The second time it was Justin Stanton. This time it was Bob Reynolds and Nate Werth. Just amazing.
I’m glad I went. I didn’t get everything done at work that I wanted to, which means I’m going to be burning the candle this weekend to try and finish the work by Monday. And with so much band and driving and stuff to worry about, it could have been a poor decision, but I think it was a great decision because it was a great show. Let’s see if I feel the same way after tomorrow’s marathon day.

I just saw Snarky Puppy last night, and it was such an incredible show! The openers, C4Trio, were such a surprise. They were incredible. Their bassist broke his wrist the day before the show in an accident in Cleveland (don’t drive in Cleveland, I almost wrecked on the way to the show yesterday), so the cuatro players opened the set and then invited Michael League out to play bass. He must have learned all the bass parts for that set like... yesterday. Which is insanely impressive and I don’t think enough people appreciated that. The cuatro players were all insanely good, by the way. I’ve never seen an audience go from mild curiosity to unhinged enthusiasm so fast, and certainly not from an opener.
Anyway, Snarky Puppy’s whole set was off their new album except the last song on the set and the encore (Sleeper and Shofukan, Sleeper is my favorite song of theirs so I wasn’t complaining).
Kind of a bummer the crowd didn’t seem super hype for the new stuff, but I guess that’s kinda what happens. Michael basically said “hey thanks for listening to like an hour and a half of our new music, this tour is really about us playing new music and being able to move forward and do new fun things” and was met with a “PLAY LINGUS” from a couple audience members.
The crowd in general just didn’t seem super excited for a lot of it. I watched like 20 people leave in the middle of the drum solo in the encore once they realized they probably weren’t going to hear another song. They brought out a local percussionist to jam too, and Weedie Braimah on djembe which was so, so cool to see.
If you read all that, I love you for it. If not, the show was awesome, there were some eyes opened to Latin music, I have a much greater appreciation for the new album (and I loved it before, so that’s saying something), the crowd was a little disappointing, but the band didn’t seem to mind much. They seemed happy just to be up there jamming, which is what we love to see
Anyway go listen to Empire Central, or throw together a queue of one of their recent setlists if you don’t want the whole album (but you do, it’s phenomenal I promise)

The best concert I’ve seen last year, probably in my favourite concert venue of all time. So glad I shared my goose bump moments with my friends from the US, continental Europe and the UK along with an amazing audience. In my book this is hero stuff! Michael - you are the cat! Big respect! And not only for the reason that my wife is singing the tag of Shofukan around the house and garden! #RoyalAlbertHall #SnarkyPuppy #Shofukan #basspower @seeandreas @helenamaymusic @liminadave @snarkypuppy @royalalberthall @groundupmusicny #epic #goosebumps #inspirational #musicislife (at Royal Albert Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCBDT2MpOd4/?igshid=fcnvumxmslwi
