Ryuzaki gritted his teeth. Without warning, he lunged up again, grabbing Haga and throwing him down on the bed, pinning him down by the shoulders with a rough grip. Haga squirmed, instinctively trying to curl up defensively like a pillbug, but Ryuzaki was the stronger of the two, just like he’d pointed out. Left without much choice, all Haga could do was tense up, hoping Ryuzaki wasn’t going to use it against him, beat him up like their enemies would— But Ryuzaki didn’t. He just stared down at him, holding him down in place, waiting for him to stop hyperventilating. It took a full minute before Haga’s brain would accept that Ryuzaki wasn’t about to hurt him, that he was waiting for something… and eventually, Haga managed to slow his breaths down enough to properly meet Ryuzaki’s eyes again, his own face flushed and hot and scrounged up in a frustrated grimace.

very important to note for the grown up shrimps au: i absolutely think ryuzaki fills out when he grows up. you look at him and you THINK he's just a kinda broad-shouldered twink because of the baggy hoodies but he goes out twice a week to lift weights while blasting action movie soundtracks on his limited edition godzilla headphones and you absolutely can't tell until the baggy nerd clothes come off.

it is equally important to note that haga shares an apartment with him for astonishingly long before he first actually notices that his formerly squishy buddy did more than just get taller

ok but listen it's such a vital part of the whole established shrimpship dynamic in my futureverse thing that they're both like. chronically unable to apologize properly for anything.

pretty much since the aftermath of duelist kingdom, they've both gotten accustomed to having An Understanding where at the end of the day, it's still the two of them against the world, because it's either that or standing alone, so anything that isn't a total dealbreaker will have to be forgiven (after an appropriate amount of sourness) whether they're cool with it or not.

and because both of them hate apologizing and feel kind of weird being apologized to, they're in this weird space where neither of them really expect an apology ever, and since that hasn't gone to shit yet, they also assume that just means they've like... won friendship? solved it? the important part being, they think they're above apologizing, because clearly that's a crutch for nice people, not something the two of them have to worry about, because they're cool, they're tight, they get it, so no need for that sappy shit between the two of them.

which, joke's on them, obviously, because despite knowing each other super well, they AREN'T mind readers, actually, and sometimes they do actually have to communicate things out loud instead of just flopping on top of each other and going "let's pretend we didn't have a fight in the first place, because i'm tired and it hurts", as though the shitty words aren't still gonna be lodged in both their heads for the next three to five business days, festering and becoming subject to increasingly unfortunate interpretations

ryuzaki in my au definitely works at the zoo. mainly he works at the reptile enclosure, cleaning out the cages and feeding them and stuff, but he also spends a lot of time talking to kids and visitors about the animals and taking them out of the enclosures to show them off and demonstrate cool stuff.

he is, however, in NO way allowed to do this, nor does he even get paid to talk about the reptiles in the first place, it's just that nothing he's saying is wrong and he doesn't actually let the visitors close enough to touch them, so he's fully expecting a raise and a promotion any day now, once they get tired of giving him warnings and realize he's an Asset™
