Garashir Week Day 3: Spending time together (learning Kardasi)
An hommage to “Literacy” by thehoyden
« “Mareh liem k'i shrinal apon, vren il,” Julian reads aloud, slowly and carefully.
“Good,” Garak says warmly. “What does it mean?”
Julian looks closely at the sentence, picking out the words he knows, and trying to guess at the others. “The…the gardener took down the vines?”
Garak nods in approval. “You’re doing very well, doctor. I must say I’m impressed.”
Julian tries to restrain the part of him that wanted to grin in response to Garak’s praise. He frowns at the text instead, trying to put the new sentence together with the ones before it. “I don’t understand. What does it matter that the gardener took down the vines? Is that a metaphor?”
“Keep reading,” Garak urges him, in what was becoming a familiar refrain whenever Julian asks about anything other than the literal, direct translation of a word. But since Garak seems to be so clearly enjoying Julian’s meager efforts, Julian makes a conscious decision not to be irritated by it. It is probably some time-honored Cardassian educational tool, or something else that Garak thinks is in Julian’s best interests. So Julian settles back into his chair and continues with the next sentence, while Garak watches him from the bed with an expression that Julian doesn’t know how to interpret, either. »
It takes about an hour before something dawns on Julian. He narrows his eyes.
“…Garak, am I reading porn here?”
Garak stares at him with a facial expression torn between pride and complete exasperation.
“Of course not, my dear. “Vines in Bloom” is a work of erotica. It is an acclaimed example of Cardassian literature.”
The Doctor looks sceptical.
“There’s a difference?”
“There are times when I really don’t know why I like you so much…”
Julian takes his hand and smirks at his partner.
“Because I let you assume the role of the gardener who takes down my vines?”
Garak stares at him.
“That’s not how you use … You know what, it doesn’t matter.”
Julian’s eyes widen as the Cardassian pounces him.
After a few hours he knows exactly how a Cardassian uses this particular phrase. Learning a language is always more fun when the teacher uses practical examples. But Julian can’t help but think that his ‘obvious’ Human approach works just as fine as any Cardassian’s subtlety – at least with this plain and simple tailor.
The first half (inside the «») is taken from the work “Literacy” cited above. I adore that story and I wanted to draw a picture from it.
The second part is my short take on how this scene could have played in the “fluffy mini series” alternate timeline, where the two of them already are together (following the incidents from Garashir Week Day 1 and 2).
The background of this picture is from here.
@garashirweek, I will post again on Day 5, since I put the prompt for Day 4 together with the one for Day 6.

Shrinal shares her proposal story with us - "I was going to visit a friend in Boston and suggested that we go to New York before to see Amrit’s sister and my cousin Chand. The dates worked out well and our flights were booked! I thought it would be a holiday to visit family and friends, but little did I know Amrit had other plans brewing! On July 5th, I suggested we walk to visit all the tourist sights. He then received a ‘call’ from his sister to come to a flat party at an NYC rooftop. I wanted to continue to go to another bar, but he was adamant that we went to this ‘flat party’. He booked a taxi and we made our way to the ‘party’. We went up in the lifts to the rooftop and as he opened the door, I looked around thinking ‘where is the party?’. Then I noticed a cute set up of flowers and champagne, and that’s when I realized this was much more than a ‘flat party’. I looked at him and he has a ring in his hand, and he asked me ‘Will you marry me?’ and I said YES!" . We are hoping to have our wedding in Jaipur, India in February 2021 - COVID-19 permitted.
