Summary: 'Now the skies were lost once more behind a thick smog, though more disturbingly arcane in nature than the fires ripping through the docks those years past. The green mist ghosting across the surface of the water engulfed ship after ship, whispering through the timbers. It snuffed out lamps, bled through the shoddy wooden boards of the slums and slaughterhouses. It sought out life, and once it overtook them the people it found didn’t come back out. Not the same way they went in.'

The Ruination comes to Bilgewater in the wake of Viego's return, leaving a trapped Twisted Fate on the run. Halfway across the world, Graves does what he can.

Picking up on on a post about snippets of WIPs from @vaguely-concerned, thought it sounded pretty fun so have a short snippet from a slightly more abstract piece than my other fic:

If he reached out - now, this second - he could snatch the fluttering edge of brightly patterned cloth and refuse to let go. He could throw his fear to the stained earth and chase the bobbing lanterns beyond the shallows where they thought he was too scared to follow, and when morning came they would forgive if not forget. After all, they only had each other. The blood still in them would prove thicker than what spilled, and with time he could fix it.

He could fix it.

Stood frozen in that moment he would watch the barques drift out until the lamps were just another cluster of stars glittering over the water and chased by a shoal of silken carnival fish, denying the burn behind his eyes while no one else could catch him in the lie. He would stand until the cards in his white-knuckled hands bit angry, chastising cuts through his fingers. Until the last mournful shred of warmth gave up on him and that too retreated across the sea.

Until the hot salt air forced him to blink up into river-blue eyes and the fire in his head seized the time to rake spiteful, scorching tracks down his cheeks. The wind combing through his hair warming to broad, callused fingers and the memory of old songs on the bank mingled with the distant sounds of drunken revelry. It all blurred to one, the salt and the singing, caught between the river and the shore until the world lost interest in his aching and began to move along again. Then he would breathe and tilt a smile back into line for the only person who’d seen past it in the first place, and catch that first breath in his throat when he saw it mirrored back beneath blue eyes that pierced to the core of him. Knowing. Understanding.

Accepting. Enough to fill in so much of that hollow space when the name of it was claimed by bitten-red lips and his own was sketched back in the soft sweep of tongues through alcohol and smoke. And then it didn’t matter that he couldn’t see the lanterns past those eyes.

Because they couldn’t see the iron bars past his.
