The Value of a Truly Modular CIP System Manufacturer

1. Rinse the vessel thoroughly with clean hot water. It removes dirt particles like sugars and flavors which gets settled in the corners of the equipment.

2. In the second stage, add hot water at 80 C with 120C pressurized steam or Caustic Soda at 1.5 %.

3. In the third stage, rinse the equipment with warm water. Make sure to clean the vessel for 15 minutes.

4. Later on, sanitize the machine again with a cold water solution of peracetic disinfectant at 1.5 % or steam at 120C.

Which cleaning agents should be used while cleaning the equipment?

The CIP systems commonly use Caustic Soda, Peracetic Acid (PAA), Phosphoric and Nitric acids as well as Sodium Hypochlorite (Hypo).

Caustic Soda- This chemical is used at 0.5% – 2% volume. It softens the fats and removes the dirt, but it does not remove tough scales. Thus, it is used in removing soils from the tanks.

Phosphoric and Nitric Acids- This acid is used to remove scales and debris in dairy factories. One must handle these acids with care because they can affect valve and pump seals of the tank.

Sodium Hypochlorite- Hypo is used for disinfecting. If not used correctly, then it can corrode stainless steel. It may also become dangerous if combined with any form of acids.

making my heart beat again

so, thanks to @startofamoment for the absolutely amazing prompt (this and all the others, which you should check out here!) and to @elsaclack for all her help - hope y’all like it!! (title from stuck like glue, by sugarland)

He’s still chuckling at her screaming sheep prank as he walks out of the break room. He’s ten paces away when he turns back, ready to stick his tongue out at her and yell one last comeback. Except that’s when he sees it: the Double Tuck.

His first thought is of Rosa and her scarily accurate Amy impression and then all of a sudden that won’t leave his head. Amy’s put her phone away, is pouring a packet of sugar into her coffee, and he’s standing completely still with the image of Rosa smiling and tucking her hair behind both ears overlaid on images of Amy doing the same thing. It replays for maybe a second or maybe an hour or maybe a month – he can’t really be sure because his stomach is bottoming out and his foot is tapping uncontrollably and every rational thought in his mind is on hiatus. Then, finally, the buzzing in his brain stops and he hears Rosa talking about how, “When Amy really likes someone…”

And his feet are moving.

He’s not sure what he’ll do when he gets to the break room. He has no plan, no inkling of what he wants to say to her. But she likes him and he keeps repeating it to himself in his head so that the words take on rhythm as he walks – shelikesmeshelikesmeshelikesme – and then he’s at the door of the break room, putting his hand on the handle.

She looks so beautiful that it takes whatever breath he still had away for a moment – her forehead is a bit scrunched in the way it is when she’s focused on a difficult problem as she pours milk into her mug with the precision of a scientist. Her hair is falling like curtains around her face, largely obstructing his view, and he takes a moment, as he always does, to wonder what it would be like to touch it.

And then he remembers: she maybe likes him so he’ll maybe get to find out.

That sobering thought brings him crashing back to reality. His stomach, which had been swooshing back and forth, settles. His mouth closes, his teeth clacking together with the speed of the movement. His hand falls limply off the doorknob. Because he has no idea what comes next.

He can see it all clearly in his head: a thousand different scenarios play out in front of him. He tells her how he feels, possibly with a fantastic accent he’ll totally nail because everyone knows British dudes are, like, a billion times hotter (then he remembers she knows his normal voice and she knows everything about him and that plan goes out the window and also there’s no way Amy Santiago likes non-British Human Disaster Jake Peralta. But she did the Double Tuck).

Next on the list is just walking in and kissing her. But boundaries, and respect, and standing with Wendy, and she Double Tucked for Dave Majors and he definitely didn’t get to kiss her and it’s not fair to her. (Plus it’s a workplace and Amy Santiago does not kiss in the workplace. She definitely doesn’t kiss her partner of eight years in the workplace. No way. Never. But maybe she kisses him somewhere else?)

And then he’s imagining kissing her, and her kissing him back, and every sane idea in his head is suddenly with Doug Judy on a beach in the Caribbean or maybe taking a nap in one of his massage chairs at home but they definitely aren’t here to tell him what to do when the girl with the shiny hair and sparkling eyes and perfect laugh and adorably awkward antics that keep him up at night maybe possibly likes him back.

He’s not sure how no one noticed him standing there, in hindsight, but no one stopped him or called his name or moved him aside so they could get to the vending machines. In fairness, he has no idea how long he stands there thinking about what Amy Santiago’s lips might feel like against his – somehow both an eternity and a millisecond.

And then Amy is walking towards the door and he manages to stop looking like a fish gasping for water but he can’t seem to remember how to move quickly enough to get out of her way, to get back to his desk before she starts asking questions he doesn’t know how to answer. So instead, she opens the door into his face and he stumbles back, forcing her to catch him by one arm that he’s flung into the air in a desperate attempt to stay on his feet.

He keeps going down (his knees wouldn’t be so shaky if her pantsuit wasn’t so damn sexy), now dragging her with him. They land in a heap on the tile, their legs tangling as one of her hands holds his wrist in a death grip, her other elbow holding her weight just over him. Her to-go mug full of fresh coffee clatters away, the top staying shut and protecting her morning dose of caffeine because of course she spent weeks researching to find the most insulated, spill-proof mug in the entire city.

For a beat, they’re staring at each other. And his heart rate is increasing like he slammed his foot on the gas in his car (he amends that thought because his car would have started smoking and possibly exploded long before it hit this speed. Then he has to amend his amendment because he isn’t entirely sure that his heart isn’t emitting white clouds of smoke inside his chest. Maybe that’s why he feels like he’s full to bursting).

And then Amy is disentangling herself, standing up, brushing off her pants and straightening her jacket, laughing uproariously.

“Are you still that freaked out by the screaming sheep, Pineapples? See – it’s not fun when the tables are turned!”

She pulls him up, and as she turns to pick up her mug, he sees her elbows move, and then both her hands are behind her ears, moving her hair out of her eyes, and he can’t be imagining it this time, right?

And then he knows he isn’t because over her shoulder as she walks back to their shared desk island, he sees Rosa cock one eyebrow at him – See? I told you so. – it seems to say. And he’s nodding back at her – he saw it and it was real and Amy Santiago definitely just did a Double Tuck about plaid-wearing, orange-soda-drinking Jake Peralta.

Jake spends the rest of the day glued to his desk like Scully and Hitchcock, praying nobody notices how little work he gets done. For the next 117 minutes (according to the clock in the corner of his computer), his mind drifts aimlessly through the single repeating thought that Amy Santiago Double Tucked for Jake Peralta. With a short break for lunch, of course.

Amy Santiago, meanwhile, is sitting across from him, seemingly entirely unaware of the nebulous plans slowly converging in the back of his brain.

Minutes 118 to 356 are spent turning those nebulous plans into something more concrete, while taking breaks to alter the code he’s running to catch instances of insurance fraud. She said she didn’t want to date cops, and he wants to respect that. But Rosa’s words keep ringing around in his head - “She has to know you’re an option” - and all he’s wanted for this entire week (and maybe for a hundred weeks like this one) is to be able to ask her out for realz. Courage builds up like pressure in Charles’ rice cooker (Charles tried to teach him to use it last month, but all Jake really learned is that there’s a lot of very hot steam that releases onto your hand very painfully if you open the valve wrong).

Minutes 357 to 369 are spent finding the perfect video of a dog howling along to the recorder cover of “My Heart Will Go On” to send to Amy, because honestly, if he doesn’t bother her at least twice a day, she might send him to the doctor (or worse, the dentist. He’s not sure entirely how a weird mood would be connected to poor oral hygiene, but he’s sure it is somehow, and the dentist cried last time she saw his mouth.)

Finally, at minute 375 post-Double Tuck, he’s made a plan. It’s not really a plan in the way Amy makes plans - there’s no speech in a Word document on his computer, no carefully color-coded binder of every possible scenario, no strategic approach. It’s a Jake Peralta plan - go with his gut, lay it all on the line, and trust that his brilliant partner will have his back.

Jake’s fingers drum on the steering wheel as he drives - his Taylor Swift pump-up playlist is on shuffle, and the universe (or whatever little robot chip controls his cracked iPhone) must be rooting for him because he’s only had to skip one sad ballad and he’s had four celebratory love songs in a row.

He doesn’t even have to think about the route to Amy’s apartment - it’s burned into his memory from late night hangouts and cab rides home from Shaw’s and a million other small moments that built up to this, even if he isn’t sure what this is, yet.

When he pulls up, he sits in the car for a few more seconds, building up his confidence by scream-singing the bridge to “Ours” - it feels good and hopeful and for a few seconds, he gets lost in it until he remembers the enormity of what comes next and then his breath is quickening and his heart is racing but then he takes a deep breath and pictures the Double Tuck, just one more time. And Amy’s smiling at him in his memory and at the backs of his eyelids and maybe in a few minutes in real life, too.

He doesn’t let himself hesitate on her doorstep. He knows if he stops to think about what comes next, he’ll lose his nerve, and next thing he knows, he’ll be at home on his favorite massage chair replaying a dumb video of sheep screaming and thinking about maybe someday.

Well, eyes closed, head first, can’t lose.

So he knocks.

Amy answers almost immediately, wearing her favorite sweat pants and - improbably - the NYPD sweatshirt he’s been looking for for two years.

“Jake?” She looks a little confused, but not too surprised. It’s not unheard of for him to come over for a movie marathon or a shared dinner - although never unannounced.

“My sweatshirt!” The sight of his sweatshirt, which he had left on the back of his chair in mid-January of 2014 and never saw again, has driven everything else from his brain. For a few amazing seconds, the elephants in his stomach have stopped stampeding and his toes have unclenched in his sneakers. “Thief!”

She laughs and pulls her hands up into the sleeves. “Yeah? So what? I was cold!”

“So you took my sweatshirt? Amy Santiago, a dirty cop! I never would have guessed! Of course, I could be persuaded to not turn you in if you...returned it?”

She punches him in the arm. “Never - finders’ keepers! Anyway, come in, nerd, and you can have a blanket, if you’re really so desperately cold.”

He follows her through her doorway, protesting that it’s early May and it’s more than 60 degrees outside and no one needs a wool blanket at this time of year, Amy, and then they’re in her kitchen, where the greasy smell of pierogies and potato pancakes wafts out of a white styrofoam box on the kitchen table.

She turns and leans on the counter, arms crossed. “So, what’s up?”

And then he remembers.

His mind turns into a blank slate, everything he’s ever learned (including the dialogue to Die Hard) somehow having run for the hills. His jaw drops open as he tries to find the words, and whatever elephants had mercifully abandoned their tap dancing routine in his stomach have returned with friends.

Amy ‘s face is growing increasingly concerned by the second. Finally, after a silence so long that even he knows it’s weird, “Jake?”

And she’s looking at him and her hair is in a ponytail but he sees the same look in her eyes that he caught that morning when everything changed, so he takes one more deep breath and dives in.

“Hey, so I know we said that from now on we were both only dating criminals,” he manages to spit out. (A smoother version of himself - a Dave Majors, a Blotter Dynamite - would add, “And you’ve stolen my heart - and my sweatshirt - so you definitely count.” But he’s just Jake Peralta, and he’s far too earnest and far, far too nervous for that.)

“But I like you. Like, romantic-stylez. With a z. But you knew that.” His words are growing faster and he’s rubbing his hands together, to keep them occupied and fend off the restlessness that’s telling him to either reach out and kiss her or to run in the opposite direction. “Point is, I think you might maybe, possibly, like me back? You did the Double Tuck and I saw it and I just wanted to say that--”

“I did the what?” Amy cuts him off. Her face is entirely inscrutable - he would give anything for her normally expressive face to crack and give him an inkling of what she was thinking, but it’s like a closed book for maybe the first time in the almost ten years he’s known her (if he were judging books by their covers, he’d really like this one, but in all honesty, he’d much rather be able to read what’s going on inside).

“You know...the Double Tuck?”

She stares at him blankly, waiting for further explanation.

He sighs, realizing she maybe actually doesn’t know what he’s talking about, then takes a deep breath. He lets his face break into a wide grin and forces an Amy-esque giggle, soft and understated, reaching all the way to his eyes. Then, he brings up his hands and dramatically pushes non-existent locks of hair behind his ears.

Amy can’t help it - she bursts out laughing at the sight. It’s a little confusing and very terrifying, and the way his shoulders move as he does it is vaguely reminiscent of Rosa teasing her on a stakeout once a million years ago when there was a cute barista at the coffee shop they stopped in and suddenly she knows exactly what the Double Tuck is - if only she could stop laughing long enough to tell him.

He’s joined her now, the tension easing out of his body as laughs rise deep from his belly to mingle with hers against the background noise of cars driving by on the street outside. It’s a relief to see him so relaxed again, more like the Jake she knows than the nervous ball of energy that had arrived on her doorstep.

More like the Jake who makes her Double Tuck.

So she takes a step closer, and all of a sudden, the breath leaves his body and he remembers what he was saying but she’s looking at him and he doesn’t know what comes next and for the first time ever he’s maybe wishing he made Santiago-style plans because she definitely would have a contingency on page 57 of the binder and--

“So, you saw me Double Tuck.”

It’s a statement, but it seems to invite something more. So he takes a step closer.

“Which means romantic-stylez is maybe on the table?”

He sounds painfully hopeful, and he has that soft smile he saves just for her. So she bites her lip for a second, debating, and then nods to herself, as though she’s made her decision.

A hand on his hip.

“Which means romantic-stylez is definitely on the table.”

Her eyes are dark, looking up at him, and he doesn’t know when they got this close to each other or whether it’s her proximity or her words that’s making his brain short circuit but he’s in more than a bit of shock and thisisrealthisisrealthisisreal and then his hand is on her face, his thumb stroking her cheek as his fingertips brush the hair pulled back behind her ear.

“Amy? Can I--”

And then she’s on her tiptoes and her lips meet his and her fingers are running through his hair as she pulls him closer and one of his hands finds the small of her back as his other reaches for the back of her head, where he runs into a scrunchie.

Here’s to Labor; An American Beehive

Homer is short and wiry, proud, you can see it in the way he punches his time card, and at fifty-five his job is to push and pull eight hundred sixty pounds of yarn, crucifixion style, a buggy of steel in each hand, three hundred feet up the concrete hall of the plant. He does this sixty times in eight hours. Sometimes he dreads coming to work. But he says the workday passes fast for him and I believe him. He walks down to fetch the first pair, shoulders drooped, arms barely swinging, as if they’re accustomed only to having weights attached to them. Over the years scores of persons a third his age have turned down the job.

As Homer sweats his way down an aisle he passes Louie, also short but overweight. Louie is sitting on a bench and wiping his brow, for it’s hot down here in Continuous Spinning, what with the double deck being so confining and the heat coming off the drums to the yarn dryers. Like Homer, Louie has been around a long time, thirty-three years seniority. He’ll get up in a little while and putter for fifteen minutes with his broom and dust pan, then he’ll be back on the bench. He has all the accouterments of a subordinate, but an attitude of nonchalance washes over what is material. “It’s taken me a long time,” he says, as he watches Homer scurry back with two empties, ready to grab another haul, “to get to where I am.”

Every time I see Louie I get reminded of the song, “Louie, Louie.” I think part of the lyrics are, ‘why dontcha sit yourself down now...’ Homer doesn’t remind me of any song. Homer is like a grand old relative one remembers from childhood, greatly admired, probably single, fondly thought of every once in a while.

Every so often, when someone’s new, when a trainee, they forget. The machines here run silently, effortlessly. The cellulose xanthate is formed to a solid and a spinning jet carries it below, where the filament is washed with a finish and wound about the heat drum by an operator, and after a few minutes this end is snipped off and wasted, and the regular yarn, flat in its youth, is laced onto tubes or cones.

Continuous Spinning is the procreator of rayon industrial and tire yarns. The machines never stop, except for the once a month washdown maintenance or during production curtailment. A doff is made every eight hours, three times a day, seven days a week. When it runs full blast, fifty-six machines spin, eighty-six ten pound cakes to a machine.

The lead truck is rolling freely, but the rear one is fouled with lint and stray ends and it drags. “Click,” goes the electrical box, the lead truck having been turned from the hall, the light beam between eye and reflector broken, and the doors to Warping begin to swing open. A roar from sixteen twisters, seven to one side and nine from the other, and dead center ahead is a spray booth through which the buggies are shoved, what it sprays most of us don’t know except that it’s yellow; the protective hoods are lifted off the buggies, a red spot on the yarn indicates acid. The buggy is put aside if acid shows. One of the uses for the defective yarn is the stuffing put in coffins.

In Warping the flat double deck yarn is given a ‘Z’ twist, 2.3 turns to the inch, or 2.0 or 3.4; it could be put right on beams, the creels on the far side of the shop in lazy motion compared to the crazy, buzzing twisters. Or it could be hauled another three point six four minutes worth, the figure is from a man with a clipboard and stopwatch who charts such things, farther up the hall to Twisting, ring twisting as opposed to Warping’s up-twist; different machines but with the same noise, there to be plied or re-coned or twisted as in Warping, then possibly to be processed with adhesive dip, and packed, weighed, and shipped out. Thousands of pounds an hour, millions of pounds a month.

The primitive sound of metal rapping metal is continuous too. The very space overhead drones and at regular intervals throbs with the thudded drumbeat of a multitude of pipes pressurized from afar. Running their own course are row upon row of fluorescence, obscuring the time of day, while above all of it is steel or concrete.

Hundreds are tucked away where the chemical process begins in Viscose and other hundreds labor in Waste Treatment and Water Softeners and Acid Reclamation and the power plant, hundreds more in Staple or Coning or the Box Shop and scores of others from Engineering sashay through the halls behind their tool push carts. Very slowly fork trucks vie for the right of way and pedestrians always win by default, usually because they step aside. Every so often one passes a soul that is straining, eyes bugged and glazed and face a frozen daze. Hurrying executives in ties and button down collars weave through the traffic on bicycles while ringing their bells. In its heyday the plant employed eight thousand people.

Each has a part, isolated but synchronized, vital, compromised by the sheer weight of the place. Sixty-two acres are under roof, more mill than all the mills in New England during the time of John Stuart Mill. No one truly comprehends this creature of mass production. Homer’s vision is one of sweat, Mr. Kittel in .861 deals with it in pounds, the plant manager issues directives. The plant doc conducts ten physicals a week as he welcomes and examines newcomers. Accountants do their thing, the girls in shipping track cases and pallets on their computer screens. Each is obsessed by his own little function. And so it is with the good folk in Industrial Relations entrusted with image stewardship, and Research and Development enmeshed in routines of inspection, and Human Resources weeding out bad apples, and the nurse in the Dispensary doing her nails so pretty, and the guard force doing spot checks for pilferage, and Mr. Duke, the Plant Safety Director, spearheading the drive toward renewed safety awareness with a plant wide bingo contest, each space carrying a message on how to be safer.

I have to push two trucks of .056 twisted yarn which is always on the small solid green tubes through the spray booth and up to the .861 finishing area and while I’ve been doing it for a while I still don’t know what .861 means, and as I weave through Warping one of the girls careens out from between the twisters on the little one cubic foot box with wheels on the bottom that she’s sitting on, and I have to dig the heels to my safety shoes against the concrete to stop the first buggy from colliding with her. She’s cute and soft looking and it reminds me of baby fat yet remaining and she looks up at me in a dreamlike way and all of a sudden I’m thinking of Mr. Willis the Department Head’s favorite saying, “The longer you wait the harder it gets,” and I make my beeline for that gray area of safety, the one that shows preoccupation with business at hand, and now “Taking Care of Business” by BTO pops into my head, and then I’m hustling my buggies out of Warping with an exaggerated determination.

It’s the graveyard shift, midnight to seven, usually the quietest one, but the foreman’s been breathing down my neck all week. My job is authorized to make the adhesive dip and this shift is the one scheduled to do that, though lately that’s become more of a retreat than a chore for me. The dip room is a cubbyhole adjacent shipping, which is outside the main part of the plant. A pair of double doors snap open as their light beam is broken by the fork truck I’m operating. You don’t drive it or ride it or run it, you operate it. The doors snap shut after a time delay switch somewhere is activated, jaws snapping shut on the mechanical monster that is within.

Up in the dip room, alone, out of the way, I am doing my thing making dip. Sometimes I feel like Homer, sometimes like what’s his name, Louie. Sometimes I wonder what other factories are like, if things are different or the same further up and down the chain.

Water, liquid latex, resin, water dispersion (which sounds like soap), formaldehyde (which definitely does not), soda and ammonia get dumped together by the drums and by the buckets full to create a batch. A single large vat, one smaller that’s higher and off to the side, both elevated on a steel platform so that gravity drains the batch into the two hundred fifty gallon tank that is carried by fork truck out to the floor where the women can fill their five gallon pails for the dip pans located in front of their spindles. Some of the ingredients are mixed in the large tank, some in the small, the formaldehyde is added as a catalyst, a valve is opened, and for thirty minutes everything is mixed together. When it’s done it has a froth on top and looks like a giant strawberry milkshake. There’s noise from the overhead exhaust and hardened dip slung all over, even on the walls, testimony to the labor of decades of dip making by us dip makers, and the bright light from the spots casts weird effects on everything. Sometimes I can all but see ghosts flit by, so loosely does this place fire my imagination. But the eerie sense of working among dwelling spirits is somehow uplifting.

I only have four years seniority. Last week a man retired from Continuous Spinning.

“Everything okay? Good.”

Those were the last words he said to me. Three cakes, I mean the real kind, homemade were baked for him. Everybody in the shop signed the card. And in Warping, another cake was brought in for a lady who is to retire at the end of the month.

It’s a unique achievement, this synthetic, creating a fiber out of chemicals. It seems almost like getting something for nothing. This dip that I’m making tonight, it could be the coating that goes over the yarn that’ll go into the tire that will go on a jet plane. Maybe Air Force One, for all I know. Sometimes I haul the carbonized yarn which is patented, the heat resistant fiber that has made the space shuttle possible.

So what is success, anyway? A means or an end? Independence or acceptance of responsibility? Subjective? Objective? Is it conditional and varied, or in compliance to permanent moral standards? Is it found in the tangibles of life, like mazuma, or is it intangible? Does it lie in a reputation, or in selfish satisfaction, or in helping others? Is expediency, advantage and privilege more worthwhile than trust and honesty? Is the long run the sum of all short runs, or more? The very word conjures enigmas in my mind.

I don’t believe it necessarily has to be a regimental tie around one’s neck, or being the leader of a regiment, or regimenting one’s life to a bank account.

Hey! Last Wednesday night, I had to vote, down at the Union Hall, and the sensation of waiting and standing in that line I would be hard put to define. But it definitely had a lot to do with being with brothers and sisters.

But those snapping doors scare me. Makes a person wonder.

Remove all labels and packaging.

Be sure to assemble parts correctly. The filter and gasket must be in place and the top hang tightened to the base before use.

When cool separate the top section from the base, wash in warm water and dry thoroughly.

Don’t use the handle while unscrewing as this can cause the handle to break.

Hand wash all parts with warm water.

Rinse all parts thoroughly to remove any soap residue.

Make 2-3 pots of coffee to season the pot. Follow to use instructions below for each cycle.

To Use

Fill the lower chamber with cold water just below the valve.

Insert the funnel and fill it with ground espresso (do not tamp). Remove any coffee grounds on the edge of the funnel.

Tightly screw the upper part of the pot on to the base. Avoid using the handle for leverage.

Select burner size to fit bottom of pot. For gas stovetop, make sure the flame is not larger than bottom of pot. The flame should not come around the sides of the pot.

Place pot on the stovetop until the water boils and coffee begins to come out of the center post. There will be a gurgling sound during this process.

After 2 to 3 minutes, a small amount of coffee will trickle out and then you will hear a puffing noise. The froth will form in 3-4 seconds.

When the top of the pot is full of coffee, remove from stove.

Before pouring coffee, stir it in the upper chamber with a small spoon to equalize all the different coffee layers for optimum flavor.

Cleaning

Wash by hand with warm water.

Dry thoroughly with towel.

Do not reassemble the product until all parts are completely dry to avoid oxidation.

Do not use soap or detergent. It’s best not to use detergent when washing the aluminum models as it can taint the aluminum and therefore the coffee. However, mild detergent can be used to clean the stainless steel models if you prefer, and a liquid chrome polish can be used to keep the stainless steel looking new.

Do not use in dishwasher.

Do not use steel wool or other abrasive products. Do not use abrasive scourers or baking soda as these will discolor or damage the surface.

From time to time discoloration or a white deposit may form inside the base. This is generally due to the pot not being properly dried prior to storage, causing the aluminum to naturally oxidize. Scrub with your dish brush in a mixture of warm water and white vinegar to help remove stains. Remember to dry thoroughly.

It’s best to store all parts separately to allow air to circulate.

Tips/precautions

Use coffee ground specifically for a moka coffee maker. Don't use too fine ground coffee.

Periodically check the funnel, the filter plate and the washer for wear. Over time, they may need to be replaced.

Never use the pot without water.

Never use other contents besides coffee like teas, cacao powder or instant coffee as it will clog the filter plate.

If the heat is too high, coffee may have a burnt taste. Getting the optimum temperature for brewing may take some trial and error.

Store coffee grounds in airtight container, away from sunlight.

Use filtered water for best coffee flavor.

The Righteous Super Bee You Wish You Had In High School!

High school. For those of us who grew up when muscle was available cheap and hot girls were sometimes not, late Saturday nights spent cruising was part of the fabric of our lives. We lived for the culture of street power, tuning, and tweaking for the next midnight car show and performance clinic, letting the car speak for our loyalties and mechanical ability. Back then, we dealt with all the poseurs, the police, and the popular guys in their Brand X pony cars. Frankly, it was a blast, one that generated fond memories and probably set the standard for why we still read magazines like this one.

For Joe Biro, that cultural outlier obviously took firm root. You see, Joe is not simply a “car guy” today, but the VP of and founding partner for Vision X USA, an aftermarket performance and automotive lighting company based in Auburn, Washington. Like many who chased their performance pursuit from high school into aftermarket careers, Joe has owned his share of rides over the years, but the one that got away was a 1969 Super Bee, his first car in the glory days.

The Super Bee was Dodge’s answer to the Road Runner, though a little more upscale thanks to its podded Charger dash. Road Runner’s instant popularity had taken Detroit by surprise after its late 1967 introduction, and Dodge picked up on a “stinging bee” theme for its iteration of budget muscle in mid 1968. The premise was simple; as opposed to the deluxe features of the R/T line, the Super Bee would use a basic Coronet body and minor options coupled to a reworked 383 and solid driveline layout as standard equipment. Backed by a four-speed or automatic, better suspension parts, and Super Bee graphics, the idea was to make an impression. Until mid 1969, only the Hemi was an option. A special Super Bee coded A12 could be had late in the model year with the new 440 Six Pack, but Joe’s car back then was like most others—a durable 383 Magnum was beating under the hood.

“My first car had been a ’69 Super Bee,” Joe recounts. “So, as an adult I had wanted to restore one. This car was rough; in fact, three shops turned it down, saying it was too far gone, before Restorations by Rob took it on. Rob and his son Robbie put a lot of blood, sweat, and hard work into it.”

Rob Lelakowski has been running his Buckeye, Arizona-based shop for over a quarter-century. Mopars are his specialty, and he and Robbie have a strong following of customers in the Grand Canyon State and beyond. So the project would be in good hands, but this is not to say Joe was hands-off on the rebuild. On the contrary, it would help rekindle the past.

“It was important to me to be a huge part of this project,” says Joe. “I had a lot of memories of it, and wanted it to be 100 percent perfect. We all did. Some people wondered what I was doing. Well, they understand now!”

Starting with the well-used carcass, the process began with soda-blasting the body to bare metal. There was a lot of repair and replace to do, and all new panels were installed. The Bondo fixes of yore were left on the shelf, creating a very solid sheet-steel canvas for Chris Customs in nearby Waddell to cover with PPG F8 Green paint, ready for the factory Super Bee graphics and restored trim. This facet of the progression gave the project its visual basics. The subdued paint color helps mask the changes that went into the driveline and suspension, which was not overly-radical but far more than Mopar could offer back in the last year of the Sixties.

“This particular car I wanted to be stock-appearing, but under the hood I wanted it to be mean,” says Joe. That was not a completely difficult task, as options for stroker powerplants are far more prevalent than they were back in the high-school era. We noted the availability of the 440 Six Pack in mid 1969; this 383-based engine went even further, using a solid 440Source stroker kit with a long crank arm to punch the displacement to 512 cubes. Engine work was given to Jim Basco at Basco Engines in Mesa, who machined and assembled the package with a conservative blend of old-school four-barrel carburation, the factory exhaust manifolds, Flowmaster three-chamber mufflers, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, and minor chrome touches.

For those of us who remember, power-shifting a four-speed was the way to travel the cruise-in circuits, and Joe’s Super Bee still has the factory’s A833 crash box, rebuilt in a solid fashion by Alger at A&S in Phoenix. The fresh 8.75 differential housing was powder-coated, complete with a get-’er-done highway cog ratio of 3.55 and a SureGrip to leave dual tire marks if desired. Hotchkis shocks in all four corners aid in handling, with Baer front disc brakes stopping about 3,700 pounds of muscle.

We noted the stock appearance. One standout part of this particular ride is the white vinyl interior. You will note the bench seating. Yes, when the young ladies did dare to ride with us, it was nice to have them close, so no harm there. Rob and Robbie redid them with NOS material, and left the inside appearance quite close to 1969. The Hurst white ball shifter was, shall we say, convenient. The other exception is behind-the-scenes Vision X lighting, VDO gauge upgrades, and modern stereo upgrades thanks to Electo-Tech magic within the original AM Stereo thumb-roller radio.

So far, other than the chrome under the hood and these mild changes inside, this would look like a restoration to basic stock. There is one big exception, though. Joe wanted a wheel design that spoke both to the old and new era, plus a tire size that would allow those 512 cubes to stay glued. The largest OEM wheel on a Super Bee in ’69 was the police-car JJ-code 15×6 steelies offered with the Six Pack. Selected here were even larger examples, using the well-respected Torque-Thrust versions, with 15x7s up front and 15×8.5s out back, all shod in muscle-era profile BF Goodrich rubber.

“I named this car Sweet Lucille after a quote by George Kennedy in one of my favorite movies, Cool Hand Luke,” Joe laughs. “In the movie, he is watching this attractive girl wash a car as he works on the chain gang, and says, ‘anything just as pure and sweet as that just gotta be named Lucille.’ Rob asked if I was going to name the project, and that was how it happened!”

After starting with halogen replacement headlamps, Vision X USA is now focused on cutting-edge LED-based technology for automotive and industrial use, including a headlamp layout that uses a single LED with a well-insulated 15- or 20-watt chip for muscle car applications. (By comparison, a halogen version has 100-watt high beams and 55-watt low-beams.) As a result, the Vision X Super Bee features those LED bulbs in the dash, the brake and taillamps, the headlamps, accessory lighting and more, primarily using the OEM wiring and fixtures. In fact, Joe notes that with everything turned on inside, the draw is still less than a single halogen in the dome fixture. Cool stuff…

The nice thing about being out of high school is that you have a little more time and money for a project like this. Joe admits that before it was done, this no-expense-spared effort and so much NOS material had pushed the cost up into serious territory. Was it worth it?

“You know, if it wasn’t for Rob and Robbie, my old high-school car might have just remained a memory. Today, this car looks amazing. It really is better than new!”

The Super Bee was Dodge’s answer to the Road Runner, but never sold in as much quantity. As a result, Dodges like this are not nearly as easy to come by as you might think, and Joe spent real money getting Sweet Lucille back into prime shape.

The optional Ramcharger hood could be had for fresh-air induction, but most Super Bees (and R/Ts) came with this hood treatment. Simply a mild centered hood rise edged in chrome, it denoted that this Coronet was a member of the Scat Pack.

The engine’s external dimensions are still the same as the 1969 383 the car came from the factory with, but a stroker kit from 440source gave it no less than 129 more cubes, to 512. Edelbrock chrome dress-ups hide the 800cfm carb, a descendent of the original Carter AVS model.

The attractive white vinyl interior looks completely stock, but makes use of Vision X USAs replacement LED lighting, which can be used in the OEM wiring harness but greatly reduces draw on the battery. VDO equipment is behind the gauge facings.

Using muscle car sidewall correct 15-inch Torque Thrust wheels helps give the car an appropriate “day two” stance. The Baer brake system is barely visible behind this front wheel.

A view from underneath shows the level of detail applied to the car. The powercoated rearend housing, NOS springs, Hotchkis shocks, and fresh BF Goodrich rubber indeed make it “better than factory.”

A Griffen radiator layout is far more efficient than some of the old-school designs. Ironically, the exterior touches done to the engine bay are similar to what may have been done in the old school days. Not too much chrome, and a handful of aftermarket parts.

Dodge’s “Bee” was one of several muscle car era characters that helped promote performance in the late 1960s. While it was used to denote all the cars in the Scat Pack, only these cars received this larger example, much as only Plymouth Superbird had a highly-visible Road Runner on the wing.

The Acura MDX, or Honda MDX as known in Japan and Australia (only the first generation was imported), is a mid-size three-row luxury crossover produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its Acura luxury nameplate since 2000. 2017 Honda Acura MDX is the Third generation model’s. The 2014 MDX Prototype was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show the production version was revealed at the New York Auto Show.

Mix it up. With the flexibility of 60/40 split second-row (or available folding Captain’s Chairs) and 50/50 split third-row seatbacks, the MDX easily adapts to a variety of passenger and cargo combinations.
