Asian slaves, indigenous Americans, and identity in colonial era Mexico
The Spanish Philippines had a diverse slave population for local labor and export, including Filipino Indians [i.e. natives; indios], Muslim war captives (moros), and foreign slaves from as far away as Portuguese India.
… Upon their arrival, chino slaves [i.e. any Asian slave, not just Chinese] were absorbed by the urban economy of Mexico City, where they mainly worked as domestic servants or in textile mills (obrajes) … For their part, working in the city provided chinos with some possibilities for manumission. Chinos in domestic service were especially apt to embrace the limited opportunities available to them and to experience some social mobility. In the obrajes, chinos had few of the freedoms given to domestic servants, but they did benefit from government oversight of the industry. During official visits, chino slaves appealed for protection from overt exploitation by claiming that they were Indians (even if they were from Portuguese India). Remarkably, visiting inspectors listened to their complaints, and they often responded by liberating individual chinos under the assumption that they were indeed native vassals and could thus not be held in bondage. The overall experience of chinos in the viceroyal capital confirms the benefits of living close to the center of colonial power.
The presence of free indigenous immigrants from the Spanish Philippines in Mexico reinforced the idea that all chinos were Indians. The complex governing structure of colonial Mexico involved two republics or political communities (the república de indios and the república de españoles); this organization separated the indigenous majority from everyone else to facilitate the collection of tribute and the ministry of the Catholic Church … [N]ative immigrants from the Philippines purposely sought to confirm their membership in the Republic because corporate status provided personal advantages. They asked to be tallied in tribute rolls in Mexico to benefit from concomitant privileges, such as trading rights and legal representation through the General Indian Court. At the same time, free Filipinos were frequently confused with chino slaves - a situation that had serious consequences for Filipinos' relations with colonial institutions and enslaved individuals. Some immigrants resented having their indigenous identity questioned and sought to maintain a sense of their Indian-ness by keeping their distance from chino slaves. The majority, however, expressed solidarity with chino slaves. Filipino artisans, for example, took on chino slaves as apprentices and taught them marketable skills. Similarly, Filipino traders incorporated chinos into their own credit networks to facilitate self-purchase.
Individual chinos who were manumitted also embraced an Indian identity, regardless of whether they were from Goa, Macau, or other places in South and Southeast Asia. In this way, chinos challenged official attempts to define them solely as former slaves. Instead, they sought to join the free republic. The possibility for this kind of social integration caused widespread concern among slave owners. To defend their property rights, masters started to brand chino slaves on the face, rather than on the chest or arm as they did with Africans, in order to dissuade them from fleeing and "passing" as free Indians. This horrifying development shows that Indian communities welcomed runaway chino slaves and, by extension, that slave owners sought visible markers of their slaves' status.
Excerpt from the Introduction to “Asian Slaves in Colonial Mexico: From Chinos to Indians” (2014) by Tatiana Seijas

If you are a skilled nurse and have multilingual capabilities then wide opportunities will be there. The overseas opportunities will give you high pay as well as a high-standard working environment. The respect for nurses outside India is much higher than inside India. Nurses are being recruited through top nursing consultancy in Kerala and here is a list of the top countries that offer promising careers.
Five top countries that offer promising nursing career
United Arab Emirates: Dubai which is an opulent city right due to cultural and development richness hires nurses from India. A large part of nurses who work in Dubai are Indian and they a decent pay but not much higher than European and American countries. But the most attractive feature of Dubai is that the nurses can take their entire income to their homeland since there are no taxes. In Dubai, there are many world-class hospitals, medical centers, and clinics that offer good employment prospects for Indian and other nationalities.
Saudi Arabia: In Saudi Arabia, there are a plethora of job opportunities for nurses in both the private and Government sectors. They offer good pay, accommodation facilities and also travel allowances. Saudi Arabia is one of the largest nations in GCC countries and also the pilgrimage place for Muslims, the demand for medical facilities is very high. The demand for trained professionals especially from India is of high demand in Saudi. However, finding the right opportunity is a bit challenging since there is a high scam in the field of recruitment.
Canada: Canada is a country that offers a healthcare system with the highest standard. This country is facing staff shortages and is now actively recruiting nurses worldwide. The high-quality life and the welcoming stances towards immigrants make Canada an excellent choice for nurses. The medical facilities and education are completely free for immigrants.
Australia: Australia's flourishing healthcare industry and stunning landscapes attract nurses worldwide. With modern facilities and advanced technology, nurses can work efficiently. During leisure time, they can explore the country's picturesque natural environment. Competitive salaries and excellent benefits make it a lucrative career option. To work as a nurse in Australia, one must register with the AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and pass English language proficiency tests.
United States of America (USA): The USA boasts a robust healthcare system with a significant demand for skilled nurses across various specialties. Indian nurses aspiring to work in the USA can pursue opportunities through programs like the H-1B visa for skilled workers or the EB-3 visa for professionals with tertiary education. Opportunities exist in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and community health settings throughout the country.
United Kingdom (UK): With its National Health Service (NHS), the UK offers extensive opportunities for Indian nurses to work in both public and private healthcare sectors. The UK's Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) oversees the registration process for international nurses, which includes passing the Occupational English Test (OET) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and meeting other requirements. Work settings range from hospitals and nursing homes to community healthcare centers.
Conclusion
If you are planning for an overseas nursing job, first research the rules and regulations for immigrants. Based on it decide which country is most suitable for you. There will be medical tests, mandatory examinations, and other verifications for each country. It is better to connect with any nursing consultancy in Kerala before you plan to move, they will guide you through the process and also provide you with data regarding the recruitment.

The Evolution of Madhubani Art Over Time
Tumblr media
Madhubani art (also Mithila art) is a style of painting practiced in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. It is named after the Madhubani district of Bihar, India, which is where it originated. Artists create these paintings using a variety of mediums, including their own fingers, or twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchstick. The paint is created using natural dyes and pigments. The paintings are characterized by their eye-catching geometrical patterns. There is ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shasti, Kali Puja, Upanayana, and Durga Puja.
Madhubani painting (or Mithila painting) was traditionally created by the women of various communities in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. It originated from Madhubani district of the Mithila region of Bihar. Madhubani is also a major export center of these paintings.
This painting as a form of wall art was practiced widely throughout the region; the more recent development of painting on paper and canvas mainly originated among the villages around Madhubani, and it is these latter developments that led to the term “Madhubani art” being used alongside “Mithila Painting.”
Mithila paintings mostly depict people and their association with nature and scenes and deities from the ancient epics. Natural objects like the sun, the moon, and religious plants like tulsi are also widely painted, along with scenes from the royal court and social events like weddings. In this paintings generally, no space is left empty; the gaps are filled by paintings of flowers, animals, birds, and even geometric designs.[citation needed] Traditionally, painting was one of the skills that was passed down from generation to generation in the families of the Mithila Region, mainly by women .
It is still practiced and kept alive in institutions spread across the Mithila region. Asha Jha of Madhubanipaints in Darbhanga,
Vaidehi in Madhubani, Benipatti in Madhubani district and Gram Vikas Parishad in Ranti are some of the major centres of Madhubani painting which have kept this ancient art form alive.
Contributions:
The Madhubani painting tradition played a key role in the conservation efforts in India in 2012, where there was frequent deforestation in the state of Bihar. Shashthi Nath Jha, who runs the Gram Vikas Parishad, an NGO, started the initiative as an attempt to protect local trees that were being cut down in the name of expanding roads and development. The main reason behind this was that the trees were traditionally adorned with forms of gods and other religious and spiritual images such as those of Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita, scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata and other mythologies.
Darbhanga MP Gopal Jee Thakur started the tradition of honouring people with Mithila Painting in Indian Politics.
Awards:
Madhubani painting received official recognition in 1969 when Sita Devi received the State award by Government of Bihar. Mamta Devi from the village Jitwarpur has also got National Award. Jagdamba Devi from Bhajparaul, Madhubani was given Padma Shri in 1975 and the National Award to Sita Devi of Jitwarpur village near Madhubani.
Jagdamba Devi’s foster son Satya Narayan Lal Karn and his wife Moti Karn are also well-regarded Mithila artists, and they won the National Award jointly in 2003. Sita Devi received the Padma Shri in 1981. Sita Devi was also awarded by Bihar Ratna in 1984 and Shilp Guru in 2006.
In 1984 Ganga Devi was awarded by Padma Shri. Mahasundari Devi received the Padma Shri in 2011. Baua Devi, Yamuna Devi, Shanti Devi, Chano Devi, Bindeshwari Devi, Chandrakala Devi, Shashi kala Devi, Leela Devi, Godavari Dutta, Asha Jha and Bharti Dayal were also given the National award.
Chandrabhushan (Rasidpur), Ambika Devi (Rasidpur), Manisha Jha were also given the National award.[citation needed] In 2020, Madhubani artist Dulari Devi won the Padma Shri for contributions to art.
Styles:
Mithila art has five distinctive styles:
Bharni
Katchni
Tantrik
Godna
Kohbar
In the 1960s Bharni, and Tantrik styles were mainly done by Brahman women in India and Nepal. Their themes were mainly religious and they depicted Gods and Goddesses paintings. People of other castes included aspects of their daily life and symbols, the story of Raja Shailesh (guard of the village) and much more, in their paintings. Nowadays Madhubani art has become a globalised art form, so there is no difference in the work on the basis of the caste system. They work in all five styles. Mithila art has received worldwide attention.
The paintings were traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.
Madhubani paintings are made from the paste of powdered rice. Madhubani painting has remained confined to a compact geographical area and the skills have been passed on through centuries, the content and the style have largely remained the same. Thus, Madhubani painting has received GI (Geographical Indication) status. Madhubani paintings use two-dimensional imagery, and the colors used are derived from plants. Ochre, Lampblack and Red are used for reddish-brown and black, respectively.

Game Development Cost in Bangalore
In the bustling tech hub of Bangalore, the cost of game development has become a topic of keen interest for startups, entrepreneurs, and established companies alike.
Tumblr media
As the city cements its position as a leading center for innovation and technology in India, understanding the financial implications of game development projects is crucial for anyone looking to enter or expand within this dynamic sector.
Game development, a multidisciplinary endeavor that merges creativity with technology, encompasses various stages including concept development, design, coding, testing, and launch.
The cost associated with bringing a game from an idea to a market-ready product can vary widely, influenced by a myriad of factors such as game complexity, platform, development time, team size, and the specific services required.
In Bangalore, the heart of India's tech revolution, the cost of developing a game can range from a few lakh rupees for a simple mobile game developed by a small team, to several crore rupees for a high-end game designed for consoles or PCs, developed by a larger, more experienced game developers. This wide range reflects the diverse nature of the gaming industry, where independent developers can make a significant impact with innovative ideas, while larger studios may invest heavily in blockbuster titles.
One of the key factors influencing game development cost is the choice of platform. Mobile games, for example, are generally less expensive to develop than console or PC games due to the simpler graphics and mechanics involved.
However, developing a game that runs smoothly across different devices and operating systems can add complexity and, therefore, cost.
Another crucial component is the game's complexity. A game with intricate gameplay mechanics, high-quality graphics, and multiplayer features requires more resources and time to develop, driving up the cost.
The choice of technology and tools also plays a role; utilizing cutting-edge game engines or incorporating virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) experiences can enhance the game but also adds to the development budget.
The development team's size and expertise are also pivotal in determining the overall cost. A larger team with specialized skills in areas such as graphic design, coding, and audio production can deliver a more polished product, but also increases labor costs.
In Bangalore, where there is a vast pool of talented developers, game development companies have the advantage of accessing skilled professionals, but must also compete in a market that values talent highly.
Outsourcing certain aspects of the game development process to specialized studios, such as Juego Studios, can be a cost-effective strategy. Juego Studios, with its extensive experience in game development, offers a range of services from concept art and design to development and post-launch support. Partnering with such studios allows companies to leverage expertise and technology that might be too expensive or time-consuming to develop in-house, potentially reducing overall project costs while ensuring high-quality results.
Moreover, the marketing and distribution of the game represent additional costs that must be considered. In today's digital age, creating a game that stands out in a crowded market requires effective marketing strategies and platforms, which can significantly affect the total investment required for a game's success.
In conclusion, the cost of game development in Bangalore, as in other major tech hubs, is influenced by a complex interplay of factors including the game's scope, platform, development timeline, team expertise, and marketing efforts. For those looking to navigate this exciting but challenging field, understanding these cost drivers and exploring partnerships with established game development services like Juego Studios can provide a solid foundation for success. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, so too will the strategies for developing and launching games in a cost-effective manner, making it an ongoing journey of innovation and financial planning.

12th January 1932 saw the death in India of Isabel Kerr, a doctor and missionary who pioneered the treatment of leprosy in India.
Isabella Kerr was born in Gollachy, Enzie in Banffshire on 30 May 1875. Her parents were Mary Garden and John Bain Gunn, a farmer. Kerr studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 1903.
Kerr met and married the Reverend George McGlashan Kerr, a former joiner who had returned from being a missionary in Africa. . They married in 1903, and worked together in England until they were sent out to India by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in 1907
Upon undertaking missionary work, not related to their field of interest, they realized the medical treatment given to the leprosy patients was inadequate and warranted serious attention. Considering the incidence of leprosy in this area and the urgent need for proper treatment of the patients at the right time in 1911 Kerr opened a leprosy centre at the mission in Nizamabad, Telangana.
In those days many of the people were not aware of an important fact about leprosy because of misinformation and ignorance. It is one of the least infectious diseases as nearly everyone has some kind of immunity to resist it.
The unfortunate patients had to suffer unbearable Stigma and ostracism on account of disfigurement suffered by them. So, they were isolated and shunned, removed far away from the community. Fear of discrimination, poor treatment of them in the society impacted every aspect of their life-style. In its wake affected are their participation in the social activities, marital life, livelihood, economic security, and mental health. Leprosy is also the leading cause of permanent disability in the world and is primarily a disease of the poor.
The news of her mission and dedicated work and medical treatment without any bias spread far and wide like summer bush fire. Consequently, the response was just overwhelming and she needed additional space and beds to accommodate them.
By the early 1920s, the hospital gained better name and had more than 120 buildings dedicated to leprosy related problems. Many buildings were built by the Nizam family members. The complex comprised 360 acres of land. She worked closely with Ernest Muir who had experimented with the use of hydrocarbons to treat leprosy. Their centre at Dichpali became a leading center for leprosy treatment and cure and people in thousands were benefited at this center. In view of their dedicated services to the cause this dreaded disease and their establishment of a leading hospital to treat leprosy. patients, the British India government awarded Kaisar-i-Hind Medals to the couple in 1923. As ill-luck would have it, Kerr died in January 1932 (at the age of 56) and her husband George Kerr continued her mission until 1938 after which he got back to Scotland to lead a retired life. In the 1960s, the hospital founded by Isabella Kerr could take care of 400 patients. The incidence of leprosy in India has come way down. Isabella Kerr's name is permanently etched in the medical history of India related to leprosy.
The following is quoted from an obituary on Isabel Kerr;
'Dr. Isabel Kerr, a medical missionary who was one of the foremost authorities on the treatment of leprosy in India, has died at Dishpali, the Methodist Leper Home and Hospital near Nizamabad, of which for the past 12 years she had been the medical superintendent. Struck with the great need for a leper home in the area, she and her husband chose a beautiful site six miles from Nizamabd and, with money given for the purpose by a devout Hindu, began to build. When Sir Leonard Rogers made great discovery of the remedial value of the injection of the essential principle from chaulmoogra oil, the home developed into a hospital.
In 1923 Dr. Kerr was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal in recognition of her services. Her medical skill and her devotion to the cause of the leper, together with her modest reserve and womanly charm, won her innumerable friends both in India and at home.'

Day 12
At home
Kidou: Good morning, mar.
Today’s the match between Raimon and Mikage Sennou. Let’s go see the results of Raimon’s special training at the Inabikari training center.
As for the winner… This time, I can honestly say I have no idea how this match will turn out.
Option 1
mar: I’m rooting for Raimon!
Kidou: So you want Raimon to win, huh…?
Option 2
mar: I’m rooting for Mikage Sennou!
Kidou: Right. We do need them to crush Raimon, after all.
Tumblr media
Kidou: Heh… I’m personally very curious to see which philosophy will come out on top—Mikage’s data or Raimon’s stupidity.
The commander’s already got his eye on Mikage… And they’re also likely to end up as our opponent in the finals.
It wouldn’t hurt to watch the match.
*
Kidou: I forgot to set my alarm last night…
Thankfully I woke up in time, but I’ll have to be more careful from now on.
Breakfast
Kidou: We’re having salad this morning. …Woah, there’s over forty items in there.
Let’s see…
Kidou’s room
Kidou: mar, is that bed hair…?
Go check in the mirror, just to be sure.
In the car
Kidou: The match is at 11:30, so we’ll leave school in the morning.
Morning practice
Doumen: The commander sure doesn’t show up to practice a lot, does he~
Narukami: But we can take it easy and practice whatever we want when he’s not there, so it’s kind of nice~
Sakiyama: Right? He’s always watching us so closely when he’s there… I can’t help but feel nervous the whole time.
Kidou: What’s this? You think practice is too easy with me? You should have told me sooner. I’d be happy to work you to death if that’s what you want.
Tumblr media
Sakiyama: N-no, it’s perfectly fine!
At school
Class (social studies)
Kidou: The best people in their fields often have a certain philosophy of life.
I’ve been impressed quite a few times by things pro soccer players said.
Break
Henmi: Kidou-san, you’re going to Mikage Sennou to collect info today, right?
Kidou: Yeah, I’m going to watch the match.
Henmi: You know, I haven’t really done much of that myself! I’ve been thinking I should start scouting out other schools like you do~ (glance)
Kidou: Really? Then how about checking out Biyuutei, for a start?
Henmi: Ah, um… Biyuutei, huh? Alright…
Class (science)
Kidou: I wonder if my wanting to kick the ball when I see it is something like a Pavlovian response?
…I’m not a dog, though.
In the car
Kidou: I’m looking forward to seeing if Mikage’s data can beat Raimon’s idiocy.
Now then… I should spend the rest of the ride studying.
Mikage Sennou
Kidou: That move by Mikage Sennou… Sugimori isn’t the only amazing one here.
Those players who executed his command immediately are just as excellent.
They’re undoubtedly skilled… but Raimon’s movements have also drastically improved since last time.
So this is what they gained from training at the Inabikari center, eh?
…………
mar: (Hm? Yuuto-kun’s staring pretty hard at something over there…)
Option 1
mar: Are you interested in Raimon’s reserve players?
Kidou: …No, that’s not it. I was just thinking about something.
Option 2
mar: Are you interested in Raimon’s managers?
Kidou: …No. I was just thinking about something.
In the car
Kidou: It was a good match.
Mikage were better than Raimon in terms of both power and speed, but… of course they never expected the goalkeeper to shoot, with how much they rely on data.
Tumblr media
Kidou: It was completely unexpected for me too, haha. He really is the biggest idiot I’ve ever seen.
Oh, right. I brought sandwiches for lunch. Here’s yours.
Back to school
Class (Japanese)
Kidou: “One pitch, one soul” is a saying meaning to devote your entire being to something… but it originated from baseball.
If we had something like that in soccer, I wonder what it would be? …”One kick, one soul”, maybe?
Break
Kidou: I’ll go pick up the reports for the classes we missed later.
Don’t forget yours too, mar.
Class (math)
Kidou: There was no zero until that concept was developed in India…
A world without zeros… I just can’t imagine it.
Break
Doumen: Kidou-san, welcome baaack! I heard it was Raimon’s win~
Kidou: Yeah. They proved stupidity wins over data.
Doumen: H-huh? What about stupidity?
Class (music)
Kidou: mar, are you familiar with the Triumphal March?
Hold on, I’ll play it for you on the violin. I’m sure you’ll recognize it once you hear it.
Club activities
Kidou: With Raimon’s victory against Mikage Sennou, our possible opponents in the finals have been narrowed down to three schools: Raimon, Shuuyou Meito or Occult.
Henmi: Tch! Raimon again?
Narukami: Did the guys from Mikage all get a stomach ache before the match or something~?
Jimon: No, they couldn’t have gotten this far on pure luck. It’s about time we give them some credit.
Gojou: Kukuku… You say that, but our opponent in the finals will surely be Occult, no…?
Kidou: No, we can’t say for sure.
I’ve been reading the data we got from Domon, and Raimon’s growth rate is astounding.
They keep coming up with new special moves, too. They’ve become a force to be reckoned with.
Henmi: Huh? No way. Kidou-san, are you scared of them?
Kidou: I’m just stating facts.
Sakuma: Got it, Kidou. You’re warning us to not let our guards down like Mikage Sennou because it’s just Raimon, right?
Genda: But we’re still going to win no matter who advances to the finals!
Tumblr media
Sakuma: We’re the invincible Teikoku Gakuen, after all.
Kidou: Yeah, you guys are exactly right. We’ll crush anyone who stands in our way…!
In the car
Kidou: I do feel like walking home, occasionally…
I hear that walking stimulates the brain, so it’s easier to come up with new ideas.
At home
Kidou: …I got the class report.
Here, I’ll send it to you too.
In the bath
Kidou: Sigh… Raimon’s victory…
Maybe that’s what I was hoping for…
Dinner
Kidou: In Japan, you should always clean your plate, but it’s considered good manners to leave a little bit of food in some other countries.
That differences between different parts of the world when it comes to good manners is fascinating.
Kingcraft lessons
Kyougoku: If there is one mistake that leaders most commonly make…
That would be assuming that their instructions will be followed unconditionally.
Kidou: So a leader should stay humble, and never let their position get to their head… Right?
Kyougoku: Precisely. Forgetting that will lead them to ruin.
You will be just fine so long as you remember that, Yuuto-san.
Kidou: I’ll keep it in mind.
Later
Tumblr media
Kidou: So the injury’s pretty serious, huh… I had a feeling it might be bad.
Hm-mh… Okay, got it.
Let me know if anything else happens. With the Inabikari training center too.
Kidou: Oh, mar. What’s wrong? Can’t sleep?
mar: (Did someone get hurt…?)
Option 1
mar: What’s going on? You said something about a serious injury…
Kidou: Don’t worry. It’s not anyone from Teikoku.
Option 2
mar: Was that Domon?
Kidou: Yeah, he was reporting to me like usual.
Kidou: Gouenji hurt his leg during the match against Mikage Sennou today.
It was when that forward from Mikage blocked his shot, remember?
Well, if Gouenji’s absence is all it takes for Raimon to self-destruct, then they weren’t worth our attention anyway.
Tomorrow’s our match against Biyuutei. We’ll advance to the finals if we win.
Tumblr media
Kidou: I have no intention of going easy on them, no matter what kind of team they are.
I’ll watch the recording of their previous match now.
*
Kidou: Hmm. I should have a talk about how to prevent injuries with the rest of the team.
I’ve got just the book on taping…
*
Kidou: Alright, time to sleep.
Goodnight, mar.
At night…
Kidou: …………
…Gouenji…leg…

Let’s start with a few facts about “The state of digital in India in 2023” Here There were 692.0 million internet users in India at the start of 2023 when internet penetration stood at 48.7 percent. India was home to 467.0 million social media users in January 2023, equating to 32.8 percent of the total population. A total of 1.10 billion cellular mobile connections were active in India in early 2023, with this figure equivalent to 77.0 percent of the total population,With better access to information online, let’s explore some of the benefits this revolution has brought for women’s empowerment. This internet penetration and expansion of digital reach has helped women in multiple ways — women have developed a greater sense of awareness, Feminist digital platforms, online educational media, instructional blogs and videos, safety apps, and the like, have opened up women to a virtual space that gives them avenues for self-assertion.Let us look at some of these points in greater detail-
Rural Education
To seek real change we must build from the bottom up, as we say, “Real India resides in villages”. mobile technology has brought the world to [women’s’] fingertips, which in turn allows them to stay ahead of current affairs and encourages financial independence by facilitating online transactions (a large number of UPI transactions per month is an example of the same). We must collectively as a society encourage these trends. We do not need to o very far from our home to promote and create awareness about these, something as simple as teaching your domestic helpers to use a smartphone can go a long way in empowering them and their families. Access to information and education is now just a click away. Women do not have to leave their comfort zones or withstand the worst of traveling distances to attend a skill-building program or a workshop they are interested in. Online education has proven to be far more convenient and flexible for women everywhere. Google Meet, Zoom calls, Teams, and several other popular communication technology platforms have made this possible.
Having A Voice
Digital media has encouraged women to speak up and discuss issues that are crucial to their very survival. This has brought topics such as sexual harassment, domestic violence, female sexuality, and the gender divide front and center instead of hidden away behind closed doors with largely men deciding the narrative. Many campaigns have gathered steam thanks to this digital amplification, with the #metoo movement being a prime example of this around the world. This medium has also helped them to spread positive & affirmative initiatives as well
Entrepreneurship
The age of the Internet and e-commerce has created numerous opportunities for women to come into their own and explore business opportunities they never had before. Today women sell their artwork, homemade food, painting, etc across India or the world through marketplace applications, these businesses don’t consume large capital as well, therefore, becoming a nutshell including women with all kinds of unique business ideas, they are executing to perfection from more economical and acceptable within society. In their own homes.
Bringing mothers back into the workforce
Many women voluntarily chose to give up their careers in favor of raising children & other household responsibilities, With digital becoming the primary mode of communication including in the business world, women can more readily balance the demands of motherhood and their jobs from the privacy of their homes, a fine balance between Work from Home and Work from Office. Therefore, longevity & Participationof women in the workforce have increased.
Building community (Feminist digital platforms)
There are women-specific communities on different social platforms be it Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. These communities connect has given a big boost and freedom for women to share each other’s ideas, raise any concern and create a helping eco system to support. Digital platforms have helped women to also articulate their experiences in words or artistic forms, and share them with the other women of the world.Gender equalityIt is said that if you want to succeed in any field, get that project accepted among women (applicable in most cases) as women form almost ~50% of the world’s population. With digitization increasing, many opportunities are being created in every field for women, some are explained in the above topics, therefore, we have started to see equal participation of women in all walks of life. One of the biggest examples in Tennis is, prize money in all the grand slams has been made equal for both men and women, which used to have a huge disparity. Organizations have been working to bridge the pay gap and become gender-neutral in compensation. Large corporates have already announced equal gender participation in board representation/ composition
Safety apps
Finally yet important is the introduction of safety apps. Technology has made it possible to track the physical and emotional safety of women all the time through the use of safety apps. In times of potential dangers or violence, these safety apps have time and again enabled women to seek the help of family members, neighbors, friends, and even the police. Therefore, these apps have given some assurance to family members, thus allowing women to move around more freely.
Let me play devil’s advocate, it’s not all as rosy as it seems, there are many challenges in empowering women through digitization. Internet penetration among women is low — According to the Mobile Gender Gap Report 2023, compiled by global not-for-profit telecom body GSMA, the gender gap in mobile internet usage in India stood at 40 percent in 2022, as against 41 percent in 2021. Three main reasons for this gap were identified as — Handset cost, Ability to read & write, and awareness to use the internet. As a society, we all need to work toward solving these issues.
