EP 1x23 (23 of 176) Skin of Evil RATING: 3.5/5 One of the ‘biggie’ episodes of season one, #SkinofEvil kills off #TashaYar, one of the rare times a regular cast member is killed in Star Trek, and the only time when they weren’t brought back to life (although maybe Star Trek: Picard’s 2nd season will be ‘The Search for Yar?’) . Actress Denise Crosby left the show because she felt under-utilised and having binged these last few episodes I can kinda see her point, given that she rarely got to do more than open the hailing frequencies. It is a shame to see her go, but Crosby returned in different guises during the rest of TNG, and this was always exciting. I also really like how she dies in this - not in a heroic blaze of glory but in the same off-hand manner that many of the ‘red shirts’ kicked the celestial bucket throughout The Original Series and TNG. It raises the stakes - not only for this episode but for all future landing parties. If one of our heroes can be killed by a pissed-off puddle, then anything can happen next week when they visit the Planet of the Face Spiders! I also really like the eponymous ‘skin of evil’ itself - known as the Armus. Created by a society that managed to bring its negativity to the surface so they can discard and abandon it, it is refreshing to have an enemy to have no morality whatsoever. Also, however over-the-top it might be, in 2019 we have something called Twitter, which often displays them same pointless toxicity and loneliness that Armus does here. The way its scream echoes into space as Picard beams to safety is chilling. So why doesn’t it have a higher ranking? Well, despite the highlights (if you can call Tasha’s death that) there isn’t much else to the episode. The characters repeatedly try and fail to negotiate with an oily prick until Data manages to work out the best time to beam up its prisoners, with enough time for a memorial service before the credits start.
