Hey guys, Here is a guide on 'How to install OS X 10.9 on a PC with a Gigabyte 990FXA Series Motherboard and AMD FX Series CPU'.

Ok so although this guide is intended for install on the above hardware it may or may not work on other hardware, It will most likely work on the UD3, UD5 and UD7 motherboards aswell as most modern Radeon HD Graphics.

Requirements

The following items will be required in order for this to work.

Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 (DVD or USB)

Niresh 10.9 (Torrent: http://www.niresh12495.com (it's the most downloaded file currently))

A USB Pen (Niresh - 10.9 - Mavericks USB Version.zip) or Dual Layer DVD+R (Niresh - 10.9 - Mavericks ISO Version.zip)

Access to both Windows and the Niresh Mavericks USB at the same time.

You need to take your time and be patient. Both windows and OS X take some time to install.

1 HDD that is able to be completely formatted (wipe partition table)

Note: you don't need Windows if you don't want to dual boot

Preparation

I am not going to cover how to write the DMG file to a USB pen or DVD and instead will just link you to http://www.macbreaker.com/2014/01/instal...iresh.html (Step 1a if your currently in OS X and 1b if your in Windows)

So once you have the Bootable USB/DVD with Niresh on it we are ready to begin.

We need to format the HDD with the partition type MBR (for some reason when i did this with windows it didn't work) to do this will shall boot to the Niresh USB/DVD and at the prompt highlight 'Niresh Mavericks' and simply type 'amdfx GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=1 -v' and press 'Enter'.

If you don't plan on dual booting you can skip to 'Installing OS X 10.9'.

After a short time it should start booting to the OS X installer, Select your language and then in the menu bar Select Utilities > Disk Utilities > Select the HDD you want to use > Partition > 2 Partitions and then set the 1st as MS-DOS (FAT) name it 'Windows' and the 2nd as 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' name it 'Mavericks' now select 'Options' and make sure it's set to 'MBR (Master Boot Record)' then press 'Apply'

OK now the HDD is properly partitioned, We now move on to installing Windows.

Installing Windows 7, 8 or 8.1

This is installed just like normal, Except you need to make sure it doesn't install the UEFI version (make sure to select the non UEFI DVD/USB entry from the boot menu)

Once your at the install simply do a 'Custom Install' and then install windows to the 1st Partition it will need to be formated to NTFS via the format button below prior to being installed.

After the install is complete go through the standard welcome screen and post install setup and then we can move on to installing Niresh's OS X 10.9

And now we are on to the main event, Installing OS X.

Boot to the Niresh USB/DVD and then at the prompt highlight 'Niresh Mavericks' and simply type 'amdfx GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=1 -v' and press 'Enter'

Now you should be back at the OS X install screen, This time we will actually install it, Follow the on screen wizard until you get to the HDD Select page then select the 'Mavericks' disk but DO NOT PRESS NEXT/INSTALL instead press 'Customize' and uncheck the option 'GraphicsEnabler' located under the 'Graphics' section.

Now you can begin the install. Press the install button and prepare to wait a while depending on your SSD/HDD.

Fixing A Few Issues With OS X

Ok now we have OS X and Windows installed but most likely booting OS X from the HDD won't work and instead you will need to use the USB/DVD.

So once again boot to the Niresh USB/DVD but then at the prompt highlight 'Mavericks' instead of 'Niresh Mavericks' enter ' 'Kernel Cache'=amd GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=1 -v ' note the quotes need to be entered around the words 'Kernel Cache'.

After a little while it should boot to OS X and ask you to enter various information for the welcome screen, After you have entered this you should be at either the 'Login Screen' or the 'Desktop'.

If your using the exact same card as mine you most likely are not running at native resolution and are instead forced to 1024x768, To fix this we need to modify 2 kext files, if your running at native resolution skip the step below.

Load up a Terminal (Search > Terminal) and then type 'sudo su' and enter admin password, Now type 'nano /System/Library/Extensions/AMD7000Controller.kext/Contents/Info.plist' and then find '68181002' and change it to your device and vendor ID (mine is 68191002) once done press 'Ctrl or Win + X' and then repeat the same change for '/System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX4000.kext/Contents/Info.plist'.

Now the graphics is sorted provided your using a similar card to mine atleast, Now we can sort out issues with the bootloader on the HDD, Download 'Chameleon Wizard' then run it and select 'Boot0HFS' as the install mode and then press 'Install'.

Now reboot and you should be able to boot from the HDD and select the 'Mavericks' option, you may need to enter 'GraphicsEnabler=No' and '-v' is useful to see more detailed/verbose information.

Congratulations you are done sorting out OS X, The steps below are optional but highly recommended.

Updating the AMD Kernel and OS X

So you successfully got OS X working on your system, Now we should update OS X to the latest version (10.9.1 as of the time i was writing this) and the AMD Kernel to a newer and faster version.

Download the following file http://www.osx86.net/files/download/3736...4-support/ and extract it.

Next select 'Go' on the menu bar, and then 'Go to folder' and then '/', This will put you to the root of the OS X Partition, Now we need to replace the mach_kernel with the download mach_kernel file. Simply copy and paste and confirm the authentication.

Now we need to copy the downloaded 'System.kext' to '/System/Library/Extensions/', once this is done you will most likely get some errors don't panic!.

Now we load 'Kext Wizard' (installed with niresh) and select 'Repair' and 'Rebuild' under the '/System/Library/Extensions/'.

Once 'Kext Wizard' is done, Click the 'Apple icon' in the 'Menu Bar' and select 'Software Update' and 'Update All', This will take a little while, When asked to reboot say yes.

Now your system should reboot and you should be back at OS X at 10.9.1 instead of 10.9.0.

Running Windows 8 Inside OS X Using VMWare Fusion

Ok so, So far we have Windows and OS X installed to the same HDD on your PC, Now we will use the physical install of Windows inside of VMWare Fusion this will allow us to use Windows both inside of OS X and as a actual boot option.

Of Course this requires VMWare Fusion and this is a commercial piece of software therefore you will need to acquire VMWare Fusion prior to continuing.

Ok so now that you have acquired VMWare Fusion and installed it we can continue on to setting up the 'boot camp' partition.

Firstly we need to make sure that the windows partition is set to be the active partition, to do this we can load 'Terminal' > 'sudo su' > 'fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0' > 'f 1' > 'write' > 'y' > 'exit'.

Ok now it should have set the windows partition as the active partition, Now load up 'VMWare Fusion' and select 'More Options' and then 'Install from bootcamp' and then 'Create bootcamp virtual machine'.

Now the VM should be created and you should be able to simply start the VM and Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 should start and start the vmware tools install procedure. Now exit the VM and VMWare.

Now we need to restore the active partition back to OS X by doing the following load 'Terminal' > 'sudo su' > 'fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0' > 'f 2' > 'write' > 'y' > 'exit'.

And now we are done! click the 'unity' button in VMWare to integrate it even more. We now have VMWare with Windows + Windows as Dual Boot with OS X.

Now it will start installing packages onto your USB drive.

Now, select your USB disk (in my case its Install macOS Big Sur). This will completely erase your USB disk. Click Continue.

Click Continue.

Now it will start creating your macOS Big Sur installation media. It will take around 35-50 minutes to create an installation media on your USB drive.

Step 5: Install macOS Bir Sur on Unsupported Mac

Restart your MAC and continue to press option key to continue with the installation.

Now, boot from “Install macOS Big Sur.” If there is no USB device found, try to unplug and replug your USB device.

You can also use the Disk Utility if you are planning to format your drive and create a new partition and continue with the installation.

The installation may take several hours. In our case, it sometimes looked as if the installer had flown out during the upgrade. In this case, you should wait, as the installation is usually still ongoing. Over time, better ways to upgrade the machine can be found. Currently, the safest approach is to upgrade with a USB boot.

After the installation is complete, you will see that your Wi-fi is not working. So go to applications and search for Patcher file.

Right click and click to force open the file. And click on Patch Kexts. Click Continue.

Make sure the USB is still plugged-in. Click Force Skip check and enter the same password that you entered in step 4.

The new taglists seem to have gone generally well. There was one display/update error that hit some users, which I have fixed, along with some little menu logic cleanup. I will work on more display and sort options for them in future.

Since I added 'pending' status for thread watchers last week, you may have seen some apparently stuck on that status. This was a harmless legacy issue, just old check jobs that were never closed out correctly, which I have fixed. I also cut out the 'checking in' prefix from the waiting-to-check status text, let's see if that fits better.

Dialogs with multi-column lists should be less of a pain this week. I think I fixed the issue where the last column could sometimes shrink to a few pixels on the next dialog launch, and I think I also fixed the issue where columns would sometimes get a few pixels thinner every launch. Just set them once more to the size you want, and they should stick now!

'.clip' files, those for Clip Studio Paint, are now recognised and importable. Too complicated for me to support thumbs, but they have their own icon. I cleaned up the behaviour of the increasingly tall filetype selection widget, so I am happy to start adding simple new filetypes for a bit. If you would like a new media filetype added to hydrus, please send an example of that file to me with a bit of info about it. Nothing too obscure, please, and I can't promise I can add everything quick, but many are actually fairly simple. I'd like to see about .sai and .wav, and maybe start on an xml scanner so I can at recognise things like .svg.

I took a bit of time to check out animated webp this week. Unfortunately, gathering duration and frame info about webps seems to be much more difficult than actually making webps, so I am afraid we will have to wait for an update to FFMPEG or one of the other libraries we rely on to get animated webps going.

A new cache speeds up a bunch of file database lookups this week. If you have a large client, it may take a minute to update as this is populated.

thread watchers now skip/clean up unactioned check log entries (this usually happens when a check is due during network traffic paused, queueing the job, and then the client shuts down). if you noticed some odd perpetually 'pending' checkers in last week's status overhaul, this was the issue, and they should clean up. this was always harmless, just revealed with new status code

thread watchers now record serious network error detail in the check log

thread watchers are quicker about notifying UI on checker log changes

thread watchers now report 'time delta' as their simple status when waiting to check, rather that 'checking in (time delta)'. let's see if that fits better in the columns

fixed an issue where several dialogs with multi-column lists would reset their 'last column' size to the minimum three characters on the next load if they did not receive certain size events while they were open. you should just have to fix any broken dialogs once and you'll be good again

I believe I also improved/fixed the issue of dialogs with multi-column lists sometimes shrinking by a few pixels every open/close

the 'we just woke from sleep' detection is now more aggressive. it should now detect a wake after sleeps as short as 60 seconds (down from 5 mins). let's see if we get any false positives during maintenance or other busy periods

if you have a complicated database (one stored across multiple locations), the 'database' menu now has a label in place of the simple database's 'backup/restore' commands

improved the 'directory is writeable-to' check used in the program. on windows, due to some python tempfile weirdness, this was actually hanging on Program Files.

improved the related 'is db dir writeable-to' test in the boot script. if you try to run the program on a custom non-writeable db directory, the crash error should now be nicer, and running a straight client.exe installed to 'Program Files' should now auto-place your db in your user folder, no complaints, like the macOS App

corrected 'writable' typo to 'writeable' across the program lmao

fixed the new header links in the FAQ file, which I accidentally messed up

started work on updating neighbouring .txt tag sidecar export. it isn't ready yet, but it will add tag filters and tag display type to sidecar export with easier expansions in future, and fold it nicely into Export Folders

improved some log-off detection + clean shutdown code, but I do not yet have nice multiplatform support

just a side note: I looked into animated webp support this week, but it turns out decoding support is rarer than encoding. my normal and fairly new FFMPEG can't reliably render subsequent frames or figure out duration, nor can PIL or OpenCV. How to Copy Your Windows Installation to an SSD

If you're still using a traditional, spinning hard disk on your PC, you're missing out. Swapping it out for a solid-state drive (SSD) is one of the best upgrades you can make in terms of speeding up your computer. It'll boot faster, programs will launch instantly, and games won't take so long to load anymore.

You could reinstall Windows from scratch, if you wanted to, and start new with a fresh, squeaky-clean system. While that might seem simpler, it's actually much more of a hassle. Copying your drive will get you up and running much quicker, as long as you follow these instructions.

What You'll Need: An SSD

Obviously, in order to upgrade to an SSD, you'll need to, well, buy an SSD. We have some recommendations here, though if you're on a pretty strict budget, we have a separate list of cheap SSDs as well. Make sure to buy the right form factor for your computer (some laptops will use 2.5-inch drives, while others might use M.2 or mSATA drives), and get one big enough to fit all your data. If you have a 500GB hard drive now, you should probably spring for a similarly sized SSD (or larger, to accommodate for future data).

The only exception is if you're on a desktop computer and have room for multiple hard drives. In that case, you could store Windows and your programs on the SSD while putting your music, movies, and other media on a second, larger hard disk.

What You'll Need: A USB-to-SATA Dock

During this process, you'll need both your SSD and your old hard drive connected to your computer at the same time. If you're using a laptop with only one hard drive slot, that means you'll need an external adapter, dock, or enclosure that can connect your bare SSD to your computer over USB. (Again, desktop users may not need this if they have room for two drives inside their PC—you can just install it internally alongside your old hard drive.)

What You'll Need: AOMEI Backupper for Windows

There are many different drive-cloning tools on the market, but when cloning a hard drive to SSD, I recommend AOMEI Backupper, since it's free, easy to use, and takes into account a few quirks that sometimes pop up during clones from hard drives to SSDs.

The free Standard version is fine; there's no need to upgrade to the paid version for what we're doing today. You will need to enter your email and subscribe to the newsletter to get the download link, though. Thankfully, you can just unsubscribe later.

Once you've gathered up those necessities, it's time to get started.

Back Up Your Data (and Free Up Space, if Necessary)

Before you start messing with drives and formatting partitions, it's absolutely necessary to back up your data first. A simple misclick can result in you erasing everything, so do not continue until you've backed up all of your data. If you don't have a backup yet, check out our favorite software for the job—though for today's purposes, copying your important data to an external hard drive will do in a pinch.

If you're upgrading to an SSD that's smaller than your current hard drive, you'll want to take extra care here. This isn't as common as it once was, thanks to bigger, less expensive SSDs, but if that's the case for you, you'll need to delete some files and free up space on your hard drive before cloning it. Otherwise, your data won't fit.

Once your data is safe and secure, continue onto the next step.

Plug In and Initialize Your SSD

Plug your SSD into the SATA-to-USB adapter, then plug that into your computer. If it's a brand-new drive, you probably won't see the drive pop up in File Explorer, but don't worry; it just needs to be initialized first. Open the Start menu and type "partitions" in the search box. Click the "Create and format hard disk partitions" option, and Disk Management will open. It'll prompt you to initialize the drive using either the GPT or MBR partition table.

I'll be using GPT for my SSD, since I have a modern PC with a UEFI firmware. If you have an older PC with a traditional BIOS, you may need to use an MBR partition table. If you aren't sure, look up your specific model of PC or motherboard to see which type of firmware it uses.

If you aren't prompted to initialize the drive, and don't see it in Disk Management, double-check that it's properly connected to your computer, and that the enclosure or dock is powered on (if necessary).

Once the drive has been initialized, you should see the drive show up in the bottom pane of Disk Management as unallocated space. Right-click on it, choose New Simple Volume, and click Next through the wizard to create a new volume taking up the entire drive. It isn't super important what this volume looks like; we just need a volume on the disk for AOMEI to see it. Close Disk Management and continue to the next step.

Clone Your Hard Drive

Open AOMEI Backupper and click the Clone option in the left sidebar. Choose Disk Clone, and select your C: drive as your source disk. Click Next, then click on your SSD to select it as the destination disk—again, be very careful you're selecting the right disk here, since it will be erased and overwritten—and click Next again.

Even if your SSD is smaller than your current hard drive, AOMEI will resize the volume to fit. You shouldn't run into trouble unless your source drive contains more data than can fit on the new SSD.

Finally, you'll be given a summary of the upcoming operation, which you can double-check one last time. Check the SSD Alignment box along the bottom, which ensures you're getting the best performance from your SSD, and click the Start Clone button.

Wait...and Wait, and Wait

This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how large the disks are. So go binge-watch some Netflix and come back in a while. When it’s done, click the "Finish" button. You should see your new SSD in File Explorer, complete with all your data.

For Bigger Drives: Extend Your Partition

If your SSD is the same size or smaller than your old hard drive, you should be all done with the cloning process, and you can skip to the next step.

If, however, you upgraded to an SSD with more space than your old drive, you'll need to do one more thing. The Windows volume you copied to your SSD will be the same size as it was on the original hard drive, and you'll need to expand it so it takes up the rest of the disk. The Pro version of Backupper allows you to do this during the clone process, but there's no need to pay—another AOMEI tool called Partition Assistant can do it for free.

Install the free, Standard edition of Partition Assistant and look at the disks along the bottom of the window. You should see that one of your drives—in my case, Disk 2 holding the D: drive—has a bunch of unallocated space at the end. That's our new SSD, and the D: drive (or whatever letter its assigned on your system) is the volume we want to expand. You may see other volumes on the disk—these are boot and recovery partitions, and it's best to leave them intact for now.

Click that volume and select the Merge Partitions button in the sidebar. Check the Unallocated box alongside that D: drive and click OK. You should see the new layout in the AOMEI Partition Assistant window, and you can click the Apply button in the upper-left corner to make the changes.

Install Your SSD

Next, shut down your computer. It's time to install that SSD in your computer permanently. If you have a laptop with only one hard drive slot, you'll need to remove your old hard drive and replace it with your SSD. This is a bit different on every laptop. If you have a desktop PC with more than one hard drive slot, you can leave your old hard drive in as extra storage, and just install your SSD alongside it.

Reboot From Your New Drive

Once you're finished installing the SSD, you'll need to tell your computer to boot from it. (This may not be necessary on laptops with just one drive, but if you experience problems booting, it can help on some PCs.) Turn your computer on and enter its BIOS/UEFI setup—this is a bit different on every PC, but it'll usually say something like "Press DEL to enter setup" on the boot screen, so you'll want to press the corresponding key as it starts up.

From there, look for your BIOS' boot options. These will be in a different spot depending on your computer, but once you find them, you'll want to select the option to change the boot sequence. Choose your SSD from the list as the first boot drive, then head back to the BIOS' main menu to exit, saving your settings.

Your computer will reboot, and if all went well, it should plop you back into Windows faster than ever before. Open File Explorer and check to confirm that your SSD is, in fact, the C: drive. If everything looks good, you're ready to rock, and your computer should feel significantly snappier without having to reinstall a thing.

Why your Mac is running slow

Before we learn how to make your Mac run faster, it’s helpful to determine why your Mac is getting slow. The age of your machine and how much you use it has some effect, but that doesn’t explain everything. There are many possible causes for a slow Mac, so let’s try to identify the reasons why it’s happening before we troubleshoot.

Why is my Mac running slow? It could be due to:

Insufficient RAM: If your computer doesn’t have enough short-term memory (RAM), it will struggle to complete everyday tasks like running programs and browsing the internet. 

Full hard drive: To compensate for low short-term memory, your computer is forced to store things on the hard drive. If it’s chock-full of apps and large files, there won’t be enough space left to help apps and other processes run. And if you’re using a hard disk drive (HDD), lack of space means you can’t defrag your disk to help boost performance.

1. Install any updates

Are you one of the many people always clicking “Remind me tomorrow” on update notifications? No judgement here, but by delaying your updates, you may have delayed your speed as well. Older versions of Mac operating systems and other apps tend to slow down over time. And as annoying as updates are, the developers wouldn’t bother you with them unless your software would be actually, well, updated. Updated versions will include fixed bugs, updated security, and better resource utilization.

Long ago, new system updates on older Mac devices slowed down performance. Apple has since corrected the issue, and new updates should be lean and mean. They focus on trimming down unnecessary features and making sure your Mac runs its best.

Here’s how to update your Mac:

To check if you need to update, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your desktop.

Click on System Preferences… to see if there’s a macOS update. If there is, click Update.

Make sure to check the box to keep your system updated automatically.

Your computer will take some time to update your system, and will then need to restart.

If you have outdated apps, you should update those as well. Click the Apple again, and select App Store… if you see that there are updates available.

The App Store will then display all the apps you own that have possible updates, including the reason they should be updated — such as “bug fixes” or “stability and performance improvements.”

Click on the individual app you want to update and follow the instructions. If you see apps you don’t actually use here, skip to the next section to get rid of them.

2. Uninstall unused apps

Do you know how many apps you have on your computer that you’re not even using? These large programs can take up lots of space and bog you down, and they may be another reason why your Mac is running slow. Luckily, the process to remove them isn’t too onerous. Here’s how to uninstall apps:

Open Finder and select Applications.

Find the little grid icon and select Date Last Opened.

Scroll down to the bottom to find apps you haven’t used in a long time. Select the app you want to delete.

Drag the app to your Trash to uninstall it, and then make sure to empty the Trash.

Boom! Now the app is off your computer, where it can no longer eat up your space or CPU power. Repeat the process to get rid of other apps you no longer use. And don’t worry; you can always download the app again from the App Store if you find yourself missing it later.

» Find and disable the most power-hungry processes

Let’s dig a little deeper and see what’s really dragging your Mac down.

Open Finder, click Go and then select Utilities.

Select Activity Monitor, which will show you a variety of information about your system and device performance.

Click the tab for CPU at the top. Your central processing unit is what computes everything you do. If it gets bogged down by a resource-hungry process, it’ll slow everything else down.

Click the arrow on % CPU to sort by the highest percentage.

Here you can see what’s taking up the most computing power. Some tasks can’t be stopped, such as those necessary for vital computing functions. Check the User column. Anything listed as _windowserver or root cannot be disabled. Instead, look for apps that are listed under your username.

Look for anything that consumes 5–10% of CPU usage.

Here YouTube is consuming 4.4% of CPU power, which is a lot. You can easily get those resources back by closing YouTube. If the app tries to resist, click Force Quit.

If you see any processes on this list that you aren’t familiar with, it’s best to Google them before deleting — make sure it’s nothing important before you give it the boot.

Check out the other tabs in the Activity Monitor: Memory, Energy (aka battery life), Disk, and Network to see what apps or processes are taking up other valuable resources.

Check Energy to see which of your apps are taking up the most of your power. Sort by 12 hr Power to see which apps have used the most power in the last half a day.

If you see anything that’s taking up a lot of power, avoid using it when you want faster speeds for other priorities on your Mac.

If you check regularly and find out that a single app is taking up way too much power, uninstall it using the steps above.

» Remove malicious software

It’s a myth that Macs can’t get viruses. Just like PCs, Macs are susceptible to malicious software, or malware. Historically, hackers focused more of their efforts on PCs simply because there are many more Windows machines in use than Macs.  3. Remove unwanted files

Files can also take up a lot of space and memory, and a cluttered Mac can experience unresponsive apps and reduced disk space. What kind of files might be taking up space on your Mac?

Movies and TV shows you’ve already watched.

Blurry and duplicate photos: Do you tend to take five shots of everything, trying to get the perfect angle? You probably don’t need all of these hanging around.

Temporary files: macOS and other apps create temporary data and thousands of cache files during their necessary running process, and they don’t delete these excess files once they’re no longer needed.

Files in Trash: The files still exist until you actually empty out the Trash.

All of these can really add up and bog you down. That’s why removing unnecessary files can fix a slow-running Mac. Let’s start with tracking down your largest files and documents.

Open up Finder and hit Command + F to open up a search window.

Click on the Kind menu and select Other.

Scroll down through the options and find File Size; check the blue box on the right.

Back on the Search screen, make sure you select to search This Mac. To the right of File Size, go to the next drop-down menu and select is greater than. Then type in a number, such as 100, and select MB from the last drop-down menu.

You can now see the biggest items on your system, including apps and large files.

Now you can go through every item one by one and move everything you no longer want or need into the trash.

Make sure to empty the Trash so the files actually get removed.

Depending on how many old files and apps you’ve been hoarding, this process can take longer than Frodo’s quest to Mordor. Not only that, but this process doesn’t even cover all the temporary data and cache files that macOS and other apps leave behind as they run. Even if you could find all those files yourself (which are scattered all across your hard drive in difficult-to-find folders), they would accumulate again after just a few days of normal computer use.

Complete the installation process.

On the main dashboard, under Clean Clutter, click SCAN.

AVG TuneUp will show you just how much-hidden clutter is lurking in your system.

Hit CLEAN to get rid of these unnecessary application caches, log files, and trash!

Go back to the main dashboard and click SCAN under Find Duplicates. This scan will detect all of the duplicate files that you have saved accidentally. It’ll give you the option to scan just your user folder, your whole hard drive, and even your external storage. Note that scanning entire disks can take a while.

Once the scan finishes, review the list of duplicates and remove whatever you no longer need.

Back on the main dashboard again, click FIND under Find photos that are bad or similar. Select all the locations where you have photos stored.

It’ll scan your computer thoroughly and sort photos you might want to get rid of into two categories: bad photos and similar photos. Click Review and then Compare these to see your photos (nothing will be deleted unless you specify!).

Select all the photos you no longer want and click REMOVE.

Now that you have AVG TuneUp, you can choose your settings for automatic maintenance so your Mac stays fresh, clean, and speedy!

» Clean up your desktop

Your desktop screen can easily get cluttered. Depending on your settings, any screenshots you take will end up right here. Downloads and other files, icons, and widgets may be stuck on your desktop too. Desktop items reside inside your RAM (short-term memory), taking up valuable resources that your Mac could be using for other tasks. A cluttered desktop consuming lots of RAM could be another cause for why your Mac is running slow.

Having a few things on your desktop is unlikely to have a significant impact. But if you have hundreds of icons, pictures, movies, etc. stored on your desktop, you can see an increase in performance and speed by cleaning things up. That’s especially true if you don’t have much RAM to spare.

Go to your crowded desktop. Right-click (or click with two fingers) and select New Folder.

Name your new folder anything you want, such as Files from Desktop.

Hit COMMAND + A to select everything.

Hold down COMMAND and click on the new folder to deselect it.

Drag all of your highlighted files into the new folder.

Drag the folder into your Documents folder in the sidebar.

Enjoy your clean new desktop!

» Move your photos to iCloud and adjust other storage settings

As mentioned, photos are some of the largest files, and today’s smartphones make it very easy to amass a large photo library. But having too many files can quickly fill up your storage capacity and slow down your Mac.

If you aren’t willing to part with any of your photos, a good solution is to move them into the cloud. That way your photos will be saved and accessible, but they won’t take up space on your system. Here’s how to host your photos in iCloud.

Click the Apple icon and select About this Mac.

Click the Storage tab, and then select Manage…

Here you’ll see a few options of how to increase space on your Mac.

Click Store in iCloud… and then you’ll choose exactly what you want to store.

Optimize storage settings

Back on the previous screen, you also have options to optimize file storage.

Optimize Storage: Hit Optimize… This will save space by getting rid of TV shows and movies that you’ve already watched on Apple TV and iTunes. (You can download them again later if you want.) 

Empty Trash Automatically: Click Turn on… When you put files into Trash, they don’t actually get deleted until you remember to empty it. This setting allows you to have all files left in trash for longer than 30 days removed automatically.

Reduce Clutter: Click Review and you’ll be able to see large files you have saved in Documents, Applications, Music, and Music Creation. You can sort through and delete whatever large files you no longer need.

4. Empty caches

When you browse the web, your browser stores pieces of the web pages into the cache, which helps things like images load faster the next time you want to see them. Other apps store things in caches as well, such as photo and video editors that retain temporary data. Even Apple’s own apps, like Spotlight and Maps, create cache data, but these tend to be small enough that you don’t need to worry about them.

When your cache builds up with excess data from apps or other programs, that may be yet another reason why your Mac is running slow. Clearing your browser cache will help it run faster and make sure you aren’t viewing any outdated content. While you’re at it, you can clear out your browser cookies as well. And clearing out the photo and video editor caches can free up additional space in your system, which will in turn help speed up your Mac.

Let’s clear out your browser cache in Safari first.

Click on Safari and then hit Preferences.

Click Advanced and then tick the box for Show Develop menu in the menu bar.

Develop will now be an option on the Safari menu bar; click it and select Empty Caches.

Click it and you’re good to go!

Now let’s clear out your system and user (also called application) caches. Note that this isn’t necessary unless you have a lot of large files cached, such as those from a photo or video editors. Before we get started, make sure you have a current backup saved on your Mac. When you go messing around in your caches, you could break something if you’re not careful. Let’s clear out the user cache first.

Open up Finder and hit Go, then Go to Folder...

A window will pop up. Type in /Users/[your username]/Library/Caches and hit Go.

You’ll now see all the user or application caches saved on your system. You can drag anything you don’t need to the Trash and then empty it.

Again, be careful not to delete anything you might need. 

To clear out the system cache, navigate again to Finder > Go> Go to folder… and then type in ~/Library/Caches/.

You’ll see your system cache and can delete what you wish by dragging it to the Trash and then emptying the trash.

Again, be careful not purge anything that might be important. Because that can be a little tricky to determine, we recommend you use a dedicated cleaning tool, such as AVG TuneUp, that helps you safely remove all the junk while keeping anything essential.

5. Cut down on startup programs

Many apps are programmed to start automatically as soon as you boot up your computer, but they often aren’t necessary and can negatively impact your speed from the moment the system is switched on. You can choose to limit your startup programs to just the essentials.

Click the Apple icon in the top left and then open System Preferences.

Choose Users & Groups.

Select Login Items. Here you can see all the programs that start automatically and disable the ones you don’t need.

Click the lock and enter your password to make changes.

To find even more hidden startup items, click finder and then Go.

With the Go menu open, hold down the OPTION key on your keyboard. This will make a new option, Library, appear in the list — click it.

Scroll down the list of folders and select LaunchAgents. Here you’ll see apps and processes that are set to launch automatically upon startup.

If you see anything you don’t need, delete it! (If you’re not sure what something is, Google it before you get rid of it.)

6. Turn off visual effects

Visual effects — such as animations, transitions, and icons bouncing around — aren’t really necessary. They can negatively impact your performance, especially if you have an older iMac or MacBook. You can easily boost your speed a few notches by disabling visual effects like this:

Click the Apple icon and select System Preferences. Then click on Accessibility.

Once you’re in Accessibility, click on the Display tab. Check the box for Reduce motion.

Done! This will especially make a difference in speed for older Macs.

7. Rebuild your Spotlight index

Your Mac’s performance can take a nosedive if Spotlight indexing gets stuck. This may happen after you apply a major macOS update. If you notice that Spotlight search isn’t working properly, here’s how to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac.

Click the Apple icon, select System Preferences, and click on Spotlight.

On the Spotlight screen, click Privacy.

Hit the + sign and select a folder or disk that needs to be indexed again into the white box.

Once it’s there, click on the folder and then click the — sign at the bottom. That’s it!

8. Try an SSD

Are you still working with an out-of-date hard disk drive (HDD)? Switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) will give you a huge jump in performance, including speed. The difference between an HDD and an SSD is significant: when loading data and programs, you’ll go from 100 MB per second all the way up to 3,500 MB per second. SSDs are cheaper than ever, so getting one is one of the best ways to upgrade your Mac.

Another hardware adjustment you can make is to upgrade your RAM (your short-term memory). RAM is your computer’s working memory, where it computes all temporary tasks you do, like using apps, checking your email, and browsing the internet. If you have less than 4 GB of RAM, you could easily be overtaxing your system.

Even normally daily computing like using Facebook, Youtube, and email can take up a lot of short-term memory. If you use more than your device’s capacity, your operating system is forced to move something you’re not currently using into long-term memory (your hard disk) for a time — and then when you switch back to that app, your computer needs to retrieve that data all the way from the hard drive. This process is called paging or swapping, and it takes a lot of extra time, slowing down your overall performance.

So how powerful does your computer really need to be? The short answer is that it depends on how you use it. If you have a larger RAM capacity, your computer can keep more apps and processes running in your short-term memory, which eliminates delays. Depending on what your current capacity is, you can make a big difference by upgrading your RAM.

If you have less than 4 GB of RAM and you’re a normal computer user (web browsing, email, Office or Google applications, etc.) you should upgrade to at least 4 GB.

If you do a lot of multitasking, video and photo editing, or light gaming, you’ll want to upgrade to at least 8 GB of RAM.

If you’re a heavy gamer, a programmer, or a video editor by profession, we’d recommend 16+ GB of RAM.

For Macs with a non-removable battery: Turn off your MacBook. Hold down SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION and the power button and hold for ten seconds. Then reboot your Mac normally.

For MacBooks with a removable battery: Turn off your MacBook, unplug the cord, and take the battery out. Hold the power button for five seconds. Then reinsert the battery, plug your MacBook in, and restart it.

For Mac Minis, Mac Pros, and iMacs: Shut your Mac down and unplug it. Wait 20 seconds, and then plug it in and restart. That’s it!

Why your Mac is running slow

Before we learn how to make your Mac run faster, it’s helpful to determine why your Mac is getting slow. The age of your machine and how much you use it has some effect, but that doesn’t explain everything. There are many possible causes for a slow Mac, so let’s try to identify the reasons why it’s happening before we troubleshoot.

Why is my Mac running slow? It could be due to:

Insufficient RAM: If your computer doesn’t have enough short-term memory (RAM), it will struggle to complete everyday tasks like running programs and browsing the internet. 

Full hard drive: To compensate for low short-term memory, your computer is forced to store things on the hard drive. If it’s chock-full of apps and large files, there won’t be enough space left to help apps and other processes run. And if you’re using a hard disk drive (HDD), lack of space means you can’t defrag your disk to help boost performance. 

Out-of-date software: Apple generally produces new macOS versions because the newer versions run faster and better. The same applies to most apps and programs. If you’re running old versions, they could very well be slowing you down. 

Too many startup programs and background processes: You may have apps that start automatically every time you boot up your system and/or run quietly in the background while you work on other tasks. These unnecessary processes can eat up precious CPU power and RAM. 

Visual effects: macOS contains a lot of visual effects that can be taxing on older Mac computers, draining your battery and slowing you down.

Slow internet connection: If your browsing and video streaming are too slow or stuttering, the problem might not be your Mac at all — it may be caused by a slow internet connection.

Age and overuse: If you’re still rocking a 2004 MacBook, or if you constantly use lots of process-heavy apps like video editors or games on an older machine, your computer is going to be a little worse for the wear.

» Check your internet speed

Before we dive into our top ten ways to speed up macOS, let’s check your internet speed. Go to www.speedtest.net and run their test — it only takes a few seconds!

If you’re not getting fast enough speeds, try our favourite methods for boosting your home Wi-Fi signal. If you’re still struggling with slow speeds after that, it’s time to call your internet service provider to see what’s going on and whether they can fix it on their end.

Once you’ve determined that your internet service isn’t the issue, then it’s time to jump into our tips to speed up macOS.

1. Install any updates

Are you one of the many people always clicking “Remind me tomorrow” on update notifications? No judgement here, but by delaying your updates, you may have delayed your speed as well. Older versions of Mac operating systems and other apps tend to slow down over time. And as annoying as updates are, the developers wouldn’t bother you with them unless your software would be actually, well, updated. Updated versions will include fixed bugs, updated security, and better resource utilization.

Long ago, new system updates on older Mac devices slowed down performance. Apple has since corrected the issue, and new updates should be lean and mean. They focus on trimming down unnecessary features and making sure your Mac runs its best.

Here’s how to update your Mac:

To check if you need to update, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your desktop.

Click on System Preferences… to see if there’s a macOS update. If there is, click Update.

Make sure to check the box to keep your system updated automatically.

Your computer will take some time to update your system, and will then need to restart.

If you have outdated apps, you should update those as well. Click the Apple again, and select App Store… if you see that there are updates available.

The App Store will then display all the apps you own that have possible updates, including the reason they should be updated — such as “bug fixes” or “stability and performance improvements.”

Click on the individual app you want to update and follow the instructions. If you see apps you don’t actually use here, skip to the next section to get rid of them.

2. Uninstall unused apps

Do you know how many apps you have on your computer that you’re not even using? These large programs can take up lots of space and bog you down, and they may be another reason why your Mac is running slow. Luckily, the process to remove them isn’t too onerous. Here’s how to uninstall apps:

Open Finder and select Applications.

Find the little grid icon and select Date Last Opened.

Scroll down to the bottom to find apps you haven’t used in a long time. Select the app you want to delete.

Drag the app to your Trash to uninstall it, and then make sure to empty the Trash.

Boom! Now the app is off your computer, where it can no longer eat up your space or CPU power. Repeat the process to get rid of other apps you no longer use. And don’t worry; you can always download the app again from the App Store if you find yourself missing it later.

» Find and disable the most power-hungry processes

Let’s dig a little deeper and see what’s really dragging your Mac down.

Open Finder, click Go and then select Utilities.

Select Activity Monitor, which will show you a variety of information about your system and device performance.

Click the tab for CPU at the top. Your central processing unit is what computes everything you do. If it gets bogged down by a resource-hungry process, it’ll slow everything else down.

Click the arrow on % CPU to sort by the highest percentage.

Here you can see what’s taking up the most computing power. Some tasks can’t be stopped, such as those necessary for vital computing functions. Check the User column. Anything listed as _windowserver or root cannot be disabled. Instead, look for apps that are listed under your username.

Look for anything that consumes 5–10% of CPU usage.

Here YouTube is consuming 4.4% of CPU power, which is a lot. You can easily get those resources back by closing YouTube. If the app tries to resist, click Force Quit.

If you see any processes on this list that you aren’t familiar with, it’s best to Google them before deleting — make sure it’s nothing important before you give it the boot.

Check out the other tabs in the Activity Monitor: Memory, Energy (aka battery life), Disk, and Network to see what apps or processes are taking up other valuable resources.

Check Energy to see which of your apps are taking up the most of your power. Sort by 12 hr Power to see which apps have used the most power in the last half a day.

If you see anything that’s taking up a lot of power, avoid using it when you want faster speeds for other priorities on your Mac.

If you check regularly and find out that a single app is taking up way too much power, uninstall it using the steps above.

» Remove malicious software

It’s a myth that Macs can’t get viruses. Just like PCs, Macs are susceptible to malicious software, or malware. Historically, hackers focused more of their efforts on PCs simply because there are many more Windows machines in use than Macs.  3. Remove unwanted files

Files can also take up a lot of space and memory, and a cluttered Mac can experience unresponsive apps and reduced disk space. What kind of files might be taking up space on your Mac?

Movies and TV shows you’ve already watched.

Blurry and duplicate photos: Do you tend to take five shots of everything, trying to get the perfect angle? You probably don’t need all of these hanging around.

Temporary files: macOS and other apps create temporary data and thousands of cache files during their necessary running process, and they don’t delete these excess files once they’re no longer needed.

Files in Trash: The files still exist until you actually empty out the Trash.

All of these can really add up and bog you down. That’s why removing unnecessary files can fix a slow-running Mac. Let’s start with tracking down your largest files and documents.

Open up Finder and hit Command + F to open up a search window.

Click on the Kind menu and select Other.

Scroll down through the options and find File Size; check the blue box on the right.

Back on the Search screen, make sure you select to search This Mac. To the right of File Size, go to the next drop-down menu and select is greater than. Then type in a number, such as 100, and select MB from the last drop-down menu.

You can now see the biggest items on your system, including apps and large files.

Now you can go through every item one by one and move everything you no longer want or need into the trash.

Make sure to empty the Trash so the files actually get removed.

Depending on how many old files and apps you’ve been hoarding, this process can take longer than Frodo’s quest to Mordor. Not only that, but this process doesn’t even cover all the temporary data and cache files that macOS and other apps leave behind as they run. Even if you could find all those files yourself (which are scattered all across your hard drive in difficult-to-find folders), they would accumulate again after just a few days of normal computer use.

On the main dashboard, under Clean Clutter, click SCAN.

Back on the main dashboard again, click FIND under Find photos that are bad or similar. Select all the locations where you have photos stored.

It’ll scan your computer thoroughly and sort photos you might want to get rid of into two categories: bad photos and similar photos. Click Review and then Compare these to see your photos (nothing will be deleted unless you specify!).

Select all the photos you no longer want and click REMOVE.

» Clean up your desktop

Your desktop screen can easily get cluttered. Depending on your settings, any screenshots you take will end up right here. Downloads and other files, icons, and widgets may be stuck on your desktop too. Desktop items reside inside your RAM (short-term memory), taking up valuable resources that your Mac could be using for other tasks. A cluttered desktop consuming lots of RAM could be another cause for why your Mac is running slow.

Having a few things on your desktop is unlikely to have a significant impact. But if you have hundreds of icons, pictures, movies, etc. stored on your desktop, you can see an increase in performance and speed by cleaning things up. That’s especially true if you don’t have much RAM to spare.

Go to your crowded desktop. Right-click (or click with two fingers) and select New Folder.

Name your new folder anything you want, such as Files from Desktop.

Hit COMMAND + A to select everything.

Hold down COMMAND and click on the new folder to deselect it.

Drag all of your highlighted files into the new folder.

Drag the folder into your Documents folder in the sidebar.

Enjoy your clean new desktop!

» Move your photos to iCloud and adjust other storage settings

As mentioned, photos are some of the largest files, and today’s smartphones make it very easy to amass a large photo library. But having too many files can quickly fill up your storage capacity and slow down your Mac.

If you aren’t willing to part with any of your photos, a good solution is to move them into the cloud. That way your photos will be saved and accessible, but they won’t take up space on your system. Here’s how to host your photos in iCloud.

Click the Apple icon and select About this Mac.

Click the Storage tab, and then select Manage…

Here you’ll see a few options of how to increase space on your Mac.

Click Store in iCloud… and then you’ll choose exactly what you want to store.

Optimize storage settings

Back on the previous screen, you also have options to optimize file storage.

Optimize Storage: Hit Optimize… This will save space by getting rid of TV shows and movies that you’ve already watched on Apple TV and iTunes. (You can download them again later if you want.) 

Empty Trash Automatically: Click Turn on… When you put files into Trash, they don’t actually get deleted until you remember to empty it. This setting allows you to have all files left in trash for longer than 30 days removed automatically.

Reduce Clutter: Click Review and you’ll be able to see large files you have saved in Documents, Applications, Music, and Music Creation. You can sort through and delete whatever large files you no longer need.

4. Empty caches

When you browse the web, your browser stores pieces of the web pages into the cache, which helps things like images load faster the next time you want to see them. Other apps store things in caches as well, such as photo and video editors that retain temporary data. Even Apple’s own apps, like Spotlight and Maps, create cache data, but these tend to be small enough that you don’t need to worry about them.

When your cache builds up with excess data from apps or other programs, that may be yet another reason why your Mac is running slow. Clearing your browser cache will help it run faster and make sure you aren’t viewing any outdated content. While you’re at it, you can clear out your browser cookies as well. And clearing out the photo and video editor caches can free up additional space in your system, which will in turn help speed up your Mac.

Let’s clear out your browser cache in Safari first.

Click on Safari and then hit Preferences.

Click Advanced and then tick the box for Show Develop menu in the menu bar.

Develop will now be an option on the Safari menu bar; click it and select Empty Caches.

Click it and you’re good to go!

Being freeware, the Standard version can be installed on any number of desktop PCs (no server machines). Professional The Professional version has all the stuff of the Standard version plus the following features: Bare-Metal System Clone: migrate OS from HDD to SSD, SSD to SSD, HDD to HDD, or SSD to HDD without reinstalling Windows and applications while ensuring system will be bootable after migration. Bare-Metal System Restore / Universal Restore: Restore a backup image to different computer with dissimilar hardware, or move OS from physical to virtual machine (P2V) by backup and restoration. Command-Line mode: Perform backup, restore and clone operations from command prompt or by creating batch scripts. Merge Backup Images: Combine full backup and its chained incremental backups into a single backup for better management. Differential Backup with Scheduled Tasks: Perform differential backup with schedule tasks in daily, weekly, monthly and event-triggers modes. Server

The Server version is nearly identical to the Professional version, except that it can be installed on Windows Server operating systems, such as: Windows Server 2003/2008 (R2)/2012 (R2)/2016, SBS 2003/2008/2011 and WHS 2011. Each Server license allows the tool to be installed on 1 Server: if you need to install it on more serers, you'll have to buy additional licenses accordingly.

Technician

The Technician version cannot be installed on Windows Servers, but is not limited to a given number of clients - it can be installed on unlimited PCs, without having to buy additional licenses. It also features the Image deploy tool, which can be used to deploy image to multiple computers within LAN over network.

Technician Pro

The Technician Pro version comes with all the stuff of the Technician version and two additional features: Windows Server support, meaning that it can be installed on unlimited client and server machines, such as: Windows Server 2003/2008 (R2)/2012 (R2)/2016, SBS 2003/2008/2011 and WHS 2011 (just like the Server edition). Portable installation: the installation directory can be copied for portable version creation.

By clicking the Enjoy Now button, the software will point the user to a minimal, wizard-like interface which poses little doubts about what we have to do:

From here we can create new backups, as well as navigate through the existing backups (if any) and access the Restore, Clone and Utilities panels. If we go for the backup route, we'll be asked to choose the backup type: System Backup, Disk Backup, Partition Backup and File Backup.

There's also a fifth option - File Sync - that can be choosen to setup a real-time synchronization between a configurable set of files and/or folders.

Overall Performances

During our test-drive we performed the following activities: System Backup on a 16 TB Hard-Disk Drive Disk Backup of a 256GB SSD Drive to the aforementioned 16 TB Hard-Disk Drive. Partition Backup of the C:\ Partition (100GB) to the aforementioned 16 TB Hard-Disk Drive. File Backup and File Sync between the aforementioned SSD and HDD drives. The software performed well on each task: the File Sync feature is what pleased us more, since we found it really useful to perform a real-time mirror of some critical (and yet frequently updated) files. During the various activities we have always kept an eye on the Task Manager to analyze the impact on system resources, without finding any significant issue: therefore, we have nothing to complain about the tool's performances and usage.
