Any suggestions on cheaper basic led wash lights? I'm trying to get some for my school and need some recommendations.
So when it comes to money, you really get what you pay for. AmericanDJ is kind of the brand everyone I know likes to poke fun at, but their lights still made it into last year’s super bowl. Every light can be good at something and terrible at something else, and it’s your job to kind of deduce where it’s appropriate to use those things.
So in my experiences, I have never found an ADJ fixture that does the job I want or need in theater.
That being said, you might find success in the Chauvet Slimpar if you have a black box with a low grid, or need a short throw, or it’s going to be the only light source on stage, and you have the cable for it. or their Hex par series (I find the COLORdash Par-Hex 12′s to be pretty tolerable) Or maybe the Elation Arena Par Zoom will fit better. Folger Theater in DC uses these typically in a top light system: The Phillips SL PAR 155 Zoom. There was a fixture that we tried to use recently on The Addams’ Family Musical that had no branding but resembled the Chauvet Slimpar, but would not behave on a DMX chain and universe with Scrollers, or would work if we bypassed the scroller brains and only had the pars on it. It was the weirdest thing, and would only work coming like 6″ straight out of the console on that show. So, you oftentimes will get what you pay for.
I do have a soft spot for the ETC ColorSource PAR LED Deep Blue fixture.
So those would be the starting places I would start my research at.

How To Use LED Wash Lighting to face Out
LED Wash Lighting may be a fantastic way of setting the mood and adding some colour to your event. A wash light are often used anywhere! Whether you’re at a celebration , wedding or at a live show, you would possibly not even realise the impact it's on the atmosphere.
A LED Wash Lighting typically comes within the sort of a ‘can’ and lots of people prefer to simply use it on its own. this is often totally fine, but fooling around with multiple ‘cans’ and hues will produce a more visually striking effect.
Here are some ideas to play with:
Clean and straightforward
Using a single LED Wash Light to colour a neighborhood may be a clean, simple method of making a tone. there's absolutely nothing wrong with this, sometimes less is more!
Top Product: If you’re trying to find something low budget with many power to try to to the work , the superb LED RGB Can compatible to simple wash lighting.
Mix Your Colours!
Not every par can will offer an equivalent colours. Some have more, some have less. If you would like to urge really creative, you'll mix your colours to make an awesome effect.
RGB Lighting stands for Red, Green and Blue. Amber and White are often included within the pricier RGB cans. This presents the chance for the additive colour theory. you'll mix colours by fading up and down the coloured LEDs or by pointing two lights within the same area from about an equivalent position. for instance , mixing Red and Blue can make a Pink wash effect. This theory allows for deep colour mixing.
Red at Full + Green at Full = Yellow
Red at Full + Blue at Full = Magenta
Green at Full + Blue at Full = Cyan
Red at Full + Green at Full + Blue at Full = White
Top Product: For something phenomenal , the new Chauvet DJ Slimpar Pro H USB offers Red, Green, Blue, Amber, White and even UV Light! you'll do some incredible colour mixing with this powerful can.
Colour Reflects Mood!
Depending on the occasion, you’ll want to pick appropriate colours. Some colours could also be too harsh for an occasion . this is often particularly important when it involves stage lighting. Creating an environment for any event are often crucial.
A general guide of colors and moods are as follows:
Red = Anger, Jealousy, Fear
Pink = Love, Light and Airy
Yellow = Poppy, Bright and Happy
Amber = Awakening, Rootsy and Raw
Green = Rootsy, Organic, Calming, Earthy
Aqua = Gentle, Simple, Water
Blue = Water, Night-time, Calm, Sullen
White = Open, Raw, Unfiltered
The softer colours like pink and amber could be more appropriate for weddings. On the opposite hand, the deeper colours could be better for a celebration .
If you would like to urge SUPER creative, you'll even create monochromatic colour schemes. this is often perhaps more useful in stage lighting. Using different shades, saturations and therefore the brightness can change the tone of the night.
Wash Lighting Angles
If you've got multiple par cans, you would possibly even want to undertake different angles, making each can compliment one another . now also ties in with colour mixing.
You can position the lights straight up or down. Maybe even try a triangle shape where two cans can cross over one another , creating a 3rd colour.

One Button Show Reflection
My own One Button Show started with the idea of interacting with the audience members instead of them just watching the piece. So then came the idea for a quiz and questions to be asked with a control surface that would allow the audience to answer the questions and have the show respond depending on whether it was correct or not. The next aspect was to work out what the quiz would be about. I decided to ask questions about illusions after having a class about the biology of the eye in a lighting class, in which, while discussing how the eye works, how it can often be fooled or tricks that be played on it. I then looked up trying to find audio illusions to go with it, and I did find a few. So this formed the basic concept for my One Button Show.
 The next step was to work out how to format it. I decided I did not want to narrate the questions but rather have text on a screen that would ask the questions and would then explain how the various illusions work. The other big issue was working out how the control surface would work to allow the audience to respond. I decided to use the Q-Lab remote app that the was on the iPad in the technical lab, as it allowed control of a cue-cart. What I did not realise was that the grid that the buttons were laid out in was only variable to a point I could not put more then eight rows in so the last question ending up being in a new column which for some audience members became confusing.
 On the note of my actual content I should have put more effort into the making the video’s for both the questions and then the content as it was very brief and people walked away not fully understanding what some of the illusions were about especially the questions about what colour the red paper under the green light appeared to be.
 The system I wanted to keep as simple as possible to ease actual setup time being somewhat aware that the programming would be difficult for my concept. So I used a simple computer screen to ask the questions with the Ipad in front and to monitor speakers in beside the screen. I was planning on using headphones instead but none of my content required either stereo or the audience to use headphones, also it made it more available for multiple audience members to watch and participate instead of a single person at a time.
To connect the speakers to the computer I had an audio interface. For the lighting I kept it simple with one pacific 16/35 for a house light as audience members enter. Then two Chauvet LED Slimpars to allow me to use various colours for my questions on colour theory.
 As for the actual q-lab file that I had to create I was surprised by a number of things once I was actually setting up in the space. First putting more stops in so that videos that were on a loop stopped once the next thing was triggered never really occurred to me until I was there. On retrospect, I should have spent more time before the actual showing programming my q-lab file so that when I actually got in the space I had more time to test everything. Due to how there were multiple responses to questions there was a complex amount of programming that went into ensuring that each response, first triggered whether it was the correct answer or not, as well as stopping the previous video and countdown timer, and finally then sent you on to the next question. What I discovered was how truly complicated this actually was when errors were still being discovered in the second showing by audience members.
If there is two things I have learnt from my one button show they are: A) start a creating content earlier rather then later, also creating a cue synopsis beforehand would have really helped me work out exactly what I needed to create instead of jumping backwards and forwards between q-lab and video editing. And B) programming a show that interacts with the audience is hard, time consuming, and requires a much more systematic testing system so that every option can be tested to ensure that there are no bugs in the programming.
