Jean Desses, was born in Alexandria, Egypt (although his ancestry was in fact Greek) in 1904. He originally studied law, before taking an interest in design and taking up work with a well known Parisian couture house called Maison Jane. He eventually opened his own atelier in 1937, although he didn’t become very well known, until after the war had ended.

Early on it was quite obvious that his own family history and back ground had influenced the way he designed. His technical complexity was very similar to Vionnet and Balenciaga, in that, it was all about sculptural aesthetics. He was a master with his 2 preferred fabrics, chiffon and mousseline.

His dresses often featured intricate pleating and beautiful draping, which covered structured formal bodices. He also, often featured, full skirts swept back at different angles, all resulting in visually stunning, beautifully elegant pieces.

These weren’t the only materials he used however, he was also extremely adept with other materials, such as rough tweeds and dress wools. When he wasn’t focusing on gowns, some of his favorite features were, voluminous sleeves, dropped shoulder lines and draped collars.

Jean Desses designs were extremely popular among the Hollywood elite and much of the European royalty. He designed the wedding dress for princess Sophia of Greece to her marriage to Prince Juan Carlos of Spain. (Juan Carlos. doesn’t get any more Spanish than that!)

In 1951, Vogue called his latest collection of dresses, the ‘Fords’ of his career and indeed they were! (Jennifer Lopez wore one to the 2006 Academy awards, Renee Zelleweger wore one to the Oscars in 2001 and Kirsten Davis wore one to the snore fest that was the SATC2 premier).

Desses continued to operate his clothing house into the 1960s. He did not find the changing times of fashion difficult to adjust to, as his skills lended them selves well to using stiffer fabrics with simple silhouettes. However due to failing health, he closed his couture house in 1965 and retired to Greece, where he passed away just 5 years later. His work and influences were passed on to many other designers, including his two rather well known assistants, Guy Laroche and Valentino Garavani.

Of course anyone in the fashion world is familiar with these 2 names. Valentino would go on to open his own house in Rome in 1959 and LaRoche in Paris in 1957. Both of these men have often referenced Jean Desses as a huge inspiration to them and their collections. The most obvious being, the shade Valentino called Valentino red after Jean Desses started to favor a similar color in his later collections.

The most successful anniversary parties start with an idea – how the event will begin, continue and end. Having a finite and concrete party checklist to plan in helps you to keep your wedding anniversary party right on track.

1. The best thing to do when creating any party is to develop a theme. By creating a theme you can set the mood, location, food ideas and attire as well as invitations. A theme doesn’t need to be fancy; it just needs to be something both you and your spouse / friends are interested in. Some ideas of themes that can be very fun are:

4. Party decorations are important. They help establish the mood and ambience. Again, we go back to the party theme for ideas here. Lighting is also very important. Search for lighting ideas that correspond to the theme i.e. 70’s themed parties should have at least one disco ball to be sure!

5. Games, games and fun stuff! Always plan for creative anniversary party games. Spin the bottle, famous dances and Twister are always a blast. If games are not your thing, consider live entertainment -A D.J., live band, comedian all have worked very well in the past.

6. Beverages are an important part of the party. Decide (based on your personal preferences and location) whether there will be an open bar, BYOB, or virgin refreshments. 6. Most of all, sit back and have fun. Not everything will always go your way, but if you have followed your anniversary party checklist, your event should be very rewarding.

WEDDING SEQUENCE:

Here is a good way to work the wedding sequence as I see it.

1. First I come out an hour before your wedding starts and shoot photos of the bride getting ready with her mom, friends etc. These photos are mainly candid, but I will make it look like art in a natural and “real” way. 

2. Then I will go over to the guys side of the venue and shoot all their formal and candid photos so as to have all the guys photos finished before the wedding even starts which saves time later. 

3. Then I cover the ceremony from all angles. Once the ceremony ends, after the bride and groom do their walk back down the isle I would ask the bride and groom to then come back to the alter where you will meet your family and anyone that you would like in your formal photos.

 [I would ask you to tell  your “main players”, meaning the first two rows of seating in the front of the venue or church or who ever you want in your family photos to simply stay seated when they clear out the church or venue area where the ceremony took place, this way we can just have the bride and groom come back to the alter and we can then start the traditional family photos without having to track down the family] Then once your families come over to the alter …I can say….”the brides side of the family come up for photos”…then have them stand aside…and I will say…”the grooms side come up”….then I will do some shots of both families as one big family [If you want me to only]…..then any individual photos you want I will then ask you to simply point out the other people you would like to have in each photo. Or you can tell me their names and I will yell them out…or you can designate someone in your bridal party that knows everyone to grab people and gather them up in case they wonder off so this all goes smoothly…[if there is more then one family unit for either side, please let me know about step moms, dads…etc. and we can call them up by last names and do different family groupings too.]

Then once the family photos are done we will release the family to go to the reception area. 

4. Then we will shoot the brides maids and groomsmen together and you can suggest whatever you want to do as well; being fun shots or formal only. Since we already shot all the groomsman’s group photos before the wedding we can then release all the groomsman to the reception after these few photos of all the bridesmaids and groomsman together. 

5. I will then shoot all the girls together and once we finish with that we will then release the girls to the reception too. 

6. At that point it will be time for just the bride and groom to do their photos alone and once we finish creating some beautiful artistic images. THEN WE PARTY!

For the rest of the time I will float around your reception and capture all the other events without you having to ever worry about anything as I always capture it all. Of course you can ask me any time for a special photo of anyone you like. If you have a lot of young relations running around, you might be wondering how best to include the little ones in your wedding. Children of all ages can have a role in a wedding, and their spirit always adds something special to the festivities. These are some ideas on how to include your nieces and nephews in your wedding.

Your nieces and nephews can have a place in your wedding ceremony no matter what their age. The most common role for young children is ring bearer or flower girl. Do not feel as though you have to choose between your nieces and nephews if you have a large family. While too many bridesmaids can end up being a bit silly looking, a large group of children in your bridal party will inspire many smiles and “awwwws”. Some brides who have a very large group of young relations to include in their wedding will decide to have only a maid of honor and best man for the groom, forgoing the rest of the bridesmaids in favor of having a wedding party comprised of all of their nieces and nephews.

The most common role for young children is ring bearer or flower girl. This tends to work the best for children who are between the ages of three and eight years old. The flower girl (or girls) can either carry a small bouquet of flowers or a basket of petals to toss (if permitted by your venue). They are usually dressed in sweet little dresses with patent leather shoes and possibly wear a floral wreath in their hair. The bride should plan on giving flower girl gifts to the little ones. Traditional flower girl gifts include silver lockets or very dainty pearl pendants.

The ring bearer theoretically carries the wedding bands down the aisle to the altar (I say theoretically because the rings on the pillow are often fakes). If you had two little boys and wanted each to be a ring bearer, they could each carry a small pillow, one with the bride’s wedding band, and one with the groom’s ring (or the facsimiles). When you have a larger number of nephews, they can be pages. This works best when the wedding is a large and formal affair. Pages traditionally help to carry the bride’s train. It is very sweet when the bridal gown features a grand cathedral length train, but would be rather impractical for a little sweep train. In that case, simply have the young men dress all alike and walk down the aisle in a group. Even without a specific task, your nephews can still be a part of the fun.

Older nieces and nephews can be invited to participate in the wedding as junior bridesmaids or groomsmen. This is a bridge position for a child who is too old to be a flower girl or ring bearer, but too young to be a full fledged bridesmaid or groomsmen. The typical age range for junior attendants is around nine to fourteen. Once they are about fifteen or sixteen years old, they are ready to be regular bridesmaids or groomsmen. The junior bridesmaids will wear dresses which are similar in style to the bridesmaids’ dresses, only a more demure and age appropriate. Since mens’ formal wear varies so little, the junior groomsmen can wear the same type of suits as the groomsmen, or they can wear a jacket and trousers instead of a full suit.

Even tiny children can play a role in your wedding as long as you don’t expect things to go perfectly. There is nothing more adorable than a very young niece or nephew riding down the aisle in a fancy wagon or sleigh pulled by an older sibling. I have even seen babies pushed down the aisle in flower bedecked strollers! It is wonderful fun to include as many of your nieces and nephews in your wedding as you like.
