SOTM: Erin/Julius, grudge match
For the prompt: Julius' exit from the Oilers
Julius was never going to stay. Erin doesn’t really know how anyone could have expected otherwise. Sure, she knows the expectation, that if you’re a franchise saviour you stay with the franchise, give it your all, saw that play out with Bryce even though fans acted like he was team whipping boy instead of franchise saviour half the time.
But the thing is, the Oilers have been beyond saving for the entire time Julius has been there. There’s only so much one guy can do, no matter how good they are. And Julius is so good, and he tries so hard. Everything he can do, he has done, nobody could say otherwise, doesn’t slack off on the ice in any game situation, works to win the team games. But they don’t win, most games. They don’t win, because they’ve got a mismanaged team and what the old boys club might call a loser culture. Nobody’s expecting to win games, the players included, and they’re usually right.
Erin’s not like, saying that out loud any time soon, but whatever. It’s true. She likes some of the Oilers as people, has a game buddy in Farmer’s girlfriend, who is one of the funniest people she’s ever met. She likes the city okay, close enough to pop in on mom and dad but far enough they don’t really pop in on her, except for the occasional visit when the Canucks come to town, because Jared’s indisputably their favourite child. There’s nothing personal about Julius’ decision to move on, on his end or hers.
Well, mostly. Erin’s never understood how Deslauriers has kept his job so long, considering he hasn't made the Oilers any better, but they’re not worse, not that that’s saying much. Unfortunately he’s still in charge of the whole operation, and she’s a teensy bit biased against him due to the whole being raging homophobe who tried to destroy her brother’s life because he was gay thing.
Like, just a smidge. Giving the TV the middle finger every time they show his face level. Julius has been smart enough never to introduce them level. Erin’s the only one allowed to destroy her brother’s life, and she sure as shit would never do that because of Bryce, who’s like, the best thing about Jared. By far Jared’s best life decision, full stop, was somehow winning over Bryce Marcus despite his horrible personality.
Well, after adopting Julius. Erin’s pretty grateful for that one, to be honest.
The summer before Julius’ contract expires, he goes into contract talks, though he has zero intention of staying. The talk is basically ‘thanks, but no thanks'.
Erin has no clue why it takes so many meetings to get that across; maybe they’re being too polite about it, or the Oilers are being a little too obtuse, because ‘no thank you’ is three words, as are ‘please trade me’. But after those talks end Oilers management doesn’t say anything to the media except that ‘they’re working on something that works for both parties’, which must be difficult, considering Julius’ current ask is ‘no amount of money will make me stay’, which she’s pretty sure is hard to match.
Or like. Maybe there is enough money. Theoretically, there could be a magic number of money. Like, a mindboggling amount of money might do it. But they haven’t offered him it. They’ve offered him fair value, market rate, but the thing about market value is that the market’s going to offer him that too, and testing the market means he doesn’t have to play for Edmonton anymore.
But nobody gets it. Going into his final contract season, the media’s talking about how much it’ll take to re-sign him, how sweet a deal they’ll have to make it, and she almost wishes that someone would leak the fact he isn’t going to stay so that fans would feel a little less betrayed down the line. But apparently the Oilers front office is a tight ship, or they’re still firmly in denial, hoping Julius is going to change his mind.
Erin’s never seen Julius change his mind on anything big. Or even little. He hates watermelon. He’s never actually tried watermelon, but he’s decided he hates it, so obviously trying it would be silly. This is the person they’re expecting to change his mind. The person Erin has debated force feeding watermelon, because he thinks it tastes like watermelon flavour and nothing tastes like watermelon flavour, she doesn’t know what the fuck watermelon flavour tastes like, but it is not watermelon.
Anyway, he doesn’t change his mind. Shockingly.
A week before the trade deadline Erin walks in the door to find Julius sitting at the dining room table in the half dark of twilight, chin on his fist. He looks like a stock photo: ‘sad man brooding’ or ‘gloomy Finn’ or something, so defeated that Erin doesn’t have the heart to give him shit. Well, almost. She wouldn’t want him to get a big head or anything.
“Pretending you’re the protagonist in a sad indie movie, huh?” Erin asks.
“I don’t know that one, protagonist,” Julius says, then, when she turns the overhead light on, “Ow!”
“Main character syndrome,” Erin says, as Julius squints at her, looking betrayed. He’s not a vampire — he’ll survive a little light.
“Is that what you said Jared has?” Julius asks, and Erin laughs. She can’t even remember saying that, though it must have been years ago. Years ago Erin was right, though.
“Probably,” Erin says, leaning on the table so Julius is forced to look at her instead of into the abyss or whatever. “What’s up?”
“They’re going to boo me for the rest of my career,” Julius says.
“Flames fans don’t even boo Bryce anymore,” Erin says. “Rest of your career’s a stretch.”
“That isn’t true,” Julius says.
“Okay, they don’t boo like, every time he has the puck,” Erin says. That’s basically the same, right? He has to earn the boos by scoring, or assisting, or holding onto the puck a little too long, or — anyway, they boo a whole lot less than they did initially, which is her point. People have short memories, and, more importantly, they’re lazy. Hating someone takes too much energy, long term. They’ll have found someone else to hate by then — some other poor, talented kid doing his best while he’s stuck on a team with no ambition.
“Have they traded you?” Erin asks.
“I think they’re about to,” Julius says.
“Like gut feeling or—“ Erin says.
“My agent told me to keep my phone close,” Julius says.
So probably actually about to, then. She knew it was coming, unless Deslauriers was stupid and stubborn enough to keep Julius until the end, let him walk for free. Which she wouldn’t put past the guy or anything, but still. It was coming.
“You’ve been waiting for this,” Erin says.
“I know,” Julius says.
“You want this,” she says. Getting traded at the deadline, people get a chance to get used to him in another uniform. If he stays until the end, the Oilers don’t get anything for him, but the Oilers fans are going to expect him to stay, hate him if he doesn't. Even more than they will this way, she means.
“I do,” Julius says. “You’ll come with me, right?”
“As long as it’s to a decent city, sure,” Erin says, and the offence on his face is exactly what he deserves for asking such a ridiculous fucking question in the first place.

A Guide to Choosing the Right Transport Refrigeration System in Edmonton
Selecting the right transport refrigeration system is crucial for businesses in Edmonton that deal with temperature-sensitive goods. Whether it’s fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology products, maintaining the proper temperature during transit is essential for ensuring product quality and safety. With a range of options available, choosing the best system for your needs involves understanding key factors and making informed decisions. Here’s a guide to help Edmonton businesses select the right transport refrigeration system.
1. Understand Your Specific Needs
Before choosing a refrigeration system, it's important to assess your specific requirements. Consider the type of goods you are transporting and their temperature needs. For instance, fresh produce might require a different temperature range compared to pharmaceuticals. Evaluate the volume of goods and the frequency of shipments to determine the capacity and performance requirements of the refrigeration system.
2. Types of Transport Refrigeration Systems
There are several types of transport refrigeration systems, each suited to different needs:
Refrigerated Trucks and Vans: These are ideal for businesses that need to transport large volumes of goods over varying distances. Look for models with adjustable temperature controls and reliable insulation to maintain consistent conditions.
Refrigerated Containers: Often used for longer hauls and intermodal transport, refrigerated containers are versatile and can be easily transferred between trucks, ships, and trains. They are ideal for bulk shipments and offer robust temperature control.
Portable Refrigeration Units: For smaller shipments or less frequent transport, portable refrigeration units provide flexibility and can be used in a variety of transportation methods.
3. Energy Efficiency and Operating Costs
Energy efficiency is a critical factor in selecting a transport refrigeration system. Modern systems with energy-efficient technologies, such as variable speed compressors and advanced insulation, can significantly reduce operating costs. Look for systems with high Energy Star ratings or similar certifications to ensure that you are investing in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.
4. Advanced Features and Technologies
Consider advanced features that can enhance the performance and reliability of your refrigeration system:
Smart Monitoring: Systems equipped with IoT technology and real-time monitoring capabilities allow you to track temperature and humidity levels throughout transit. This feature helps you address potential issues before they impact product quality.
Temperature Control: Look for systems with precise and adjustable temperature controls. Reliable temperature regulation is crucial for maintaining the quality of perishable goods.
Eco-Friendly Refrigerants: Choosing systems that use eco-friendly refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP) can reduce your environmental impact and align with sustainability goals.
5. Flexibility and Scalability
Evaluate the flexibility and scalability of the refrigeration system. Modular systems that can be customized to fit different types of transportation and scaled according to demand offer greater adaptability. This is particularly important if your business experiences seasonal fluctuations or varying volumes.
6. Maintenance and Support
Consider the maintenance requirements and support options available for the refrigeration system. Regular maintenance is essential for ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Choose a provider that offers comprehensive support, including service contracts, repair options, and technical assistance.
7. Cost vs. Benefit
Finally, weigh the cost of the refrigeration system against the benefits it offers. While investing in a high-quality system may involve a higher initial cost, the long-term savings in energy efficiency, reduced spoilage, and improved operational reliability can provide significant returns on investment.
Conclusion
Choosing the right transport refrigeration system for your business in Edmonton involves assessing your specific needs, understanding the available options, and considering factors such as energy efficiency, advanced features, and support. By making an informed decision, you can ensure that your temperature-sensitive goods are transported safely and efficiently, contributing to the success and reliability of your supply chain.

Highlights & insights from the N7 Day BioWare Base Online developer interviews
[Rewatch link]
((In case a text format is accessible for anyone. There is a reference that isn’t safe for work and some references to military stuff. Mostly cut for length.))
These interviews comprised the first portion of the inaugural edition of the BioWare Base Online (which is a mixed media program that they’ve started). The section is called “The Story Behind N7″.
A main takeaway is that Mac Walters said in the intro segment that they are going to be releasing videos, podcasts, panels, interviews, fan creator showcases and cosplay contests on the BioWare Base Online on Twitch, in the coming weeks and months! This is due to the fact that meeting face-to-face at events like conferences, conventions, expos etc isn’t possible right now.
(Some paraphrasing.)
Derek Watts, Art Director on the MET, is the one who designed the N7 logo. At that time they were designing Shepard’s iconic armor, and the armor was designed first. Matt Rhodes was a student in school working for BioWare part-time at the time. He designed almost all the characters for ME1 and was designing the armors. The first iteration of Shepard’s armor was white and red; internal focus testing resulted in feedback that it made Shep look too much like a medic. At one time they got most of the staff to do their own version, a take on the armor. There was an environment artist named Mike Jeffrey who came up with a version which was matte black, with the armor stripe being white and a logo on the chest. This version really resonated with the team. In the next iteration they made the stripe red and knew they needed something for the logo.
Derek came up with the idea of making this logo N7. He’s not sure why it popped into his head but he may have been thinking of a recent call he’d had with his brother. When they were young they used to downhill ski (that’s Edmonton for you), and bindings (the part that hooks your boot in the ski) come with skis. They had a set of bindings that were revolutionary and well-known at the time, made by a company called Look. The name of this model of bindings was N17, and the version they had was the N77 pivot binding. Derek always thought that N77 is pretty cool. They were branding ME vehicles with letters and numbers at the time and he thought why not brand Shepard with something like that too? They obviously couldn’t use N77, but N7 stuck.
So they put it on Shep’s chest. It was originally in a different font. They thought they might make it in a well-known-in-sci-fi font called Microgramma Bold Extended. They made their own version of this font called the BioMass font. They typed out the N7 in that and he added the red section at the end to cap it off and make it more unique. The segment makes the N7 look like it has a drop shadow. And that was it!
They were quite surprised that people really liked the logo, they didn’t plan for or anticipate that at all. They started to see it pop up on peoples’ desktop wallpapers and shirts etc. It’s one of the few things Derek got to design with no feedback from anyone (contrast with the ships for example which he and Casey worked on very closely together). There are some incorrect or outdated versions of the logo floating around so if you’re considering something like getting an N7 tattoo make sure you get the right one.
Derek showed it to Preston Watamaniuk one day to ask what he thought (Preston is a Game Director and worked on the MET as a designer). He thought it looked great and asked what it means, since the military don’t put letters and numbers on something unless they mean something. Derek was like “ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk that’s for you to figure out”. Preston knew that Shep is the best of the best, a special forces individual. Very quickly it took on the idea that N7 was a designation within the Alliance military for an elite individual. They decided for the worldbuilding that N1 - N6 is a series of training courses, experience and service opportunities soldiers go through. You can get through those courses with hard work and perseverance and they’re tests of physical and mental prowess and education - “so you don’t get to be an N6 unless you’re fit, smart and resilient”. But in order to become an N7, the idea came about through Casey Hudson, “well what if it was more like Top Gun School?” So in order to become N7, you have to compete against other N6s and the person who came out on top in that training course would be given the N7 designation. This cemented the idea that N7 is the most elite. “Everyone at the Olympics is amazing, but the person who won the gold medal is the most amazing.” N6s are still considered elite however, the parallel of something like Delta Force or a Navy SEAL irl (very experienced, well-trained, exceptionally mentally disciplined). “We wanted this to be the jumping off point to become N7. You don’t get there because you’ve become bionic or been changed genetically.”
Krogan were never meant to be part of the trilogy / weren’t a planned part of the IP. Matt produced a concept that was like a prototypical krogan and everyone really liked it, so it kind of took on a life of its own.
They observe that N7 ended up meaning more to the fans than the title of Spectre did. They had originally intended that kind of ultimate title to be the Spectre rank, but it was N7 that took off and resonated more. “You don’t see the Spectre symbol anywhere!”.
When asked about merch and if there were any merch ideas that never made the cut or about unexpected requests, BioWare said “ME is a mature title and we don’t shy away from most mature content, but we have declined to be involved in some categories including the adult-related toys category. No... no. We’ve been approached and uh, no...”.

Breakout Candidates: Pacific
Anaheim: a young team with many applicable potentialities, the most prominent of which are their last 3 first round picks. Zegras and Drysdale both played a handful of games in the NHL last season, and have clear paths to both prominent 5v5 roles and PP1 minutes. Personally, I would be tempted to exercise more caution with inserting the younger Drysdale in too soon, but Zegras is at a point where there is not really a reason to delay his arrival. Recent 3rd overall pick Mason McTavish plays a physical and pro style game, but as with every other pick in the 2021 entry draft, the pandemic year that it is, McTavish is best served with at least another year before having a serious shot at making the NHL. Beyond that the Ducks have a large amount of young players who should have more to give, as reflected by Anaheim’s recent results in draft lottery contention. Forwards such as Steel, Comtois, Lundestrom are complimentary pieces that will look much stronger as the team’s performance improves, so it would be hard for them to garner as much attention or credit if say, Comtois has a strong 20-goal season playing on Zegras’ wing. On defence there are similar complimentary options. I have been a fan of Mahura’s game but his time might be now or never to break into the league. Larsson is a bit younger but hopes of him being an impact defender lay farther into the future. In net the Ducks are set with the underappreciated Gibson, but prospect Dostal has been building his resume nicely. In general the Ducks, under GM Murray, have done a really good job at drafting and developing.
Calgary: a new coach represents a power vacuum, a chance for all players to drastically change their position on the depth chart. We saw the beginnings of that during their disappointing season in the North division, and this uncertainty is spilling into this offseason. Rumours surrounding Monahan, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk. Giordano gone already, but not much change has actually occurred. Perhaps the best chance of a breakout lies with defenders Kylington and Valimaki, who have both already played well for the Flames. Valimaki was probably a strong candidate for such a title 2 seasons ago, before tearing a knee ligament that sidelined him for quite some time. Especially with Giordano gone, and a decently strong defence group around them, these 2 might be the biggest x-factors for the Flames success this season. Up front there are some prospects looking to make the jump, first rounders Peltier and Zary both present skilled players who bring a certain tenacity that could endear them to coach Suter. Matthew Philips has some fans and provides some play making ability that could compliment this group nicely should he get the chance, personally I’d say this is less likely than some of the younger forwards I’ve highlighted here.
Edmonton: Holland did a lot this offseason, and I wasn’t a huge fan of a lot of his moves. That being said the Oilers are in a good spot, perhaps their best in several year heading into 21/22. A huge part of it is a potential youth movement dawning underneath the RNH-McDavid lottery crew. The first prospect to point to would be forward Dylan Holloway, who posted a really strong sophomore season at Wisconsin. Holloway is big and strong, plays centre or wing, gets to dirty areas, wins battles, is a great forechecker, and might even find his way into fitting very nicely alongside either McDavid or Drasaitl. He’s not exactly Zach Hyman, but adding those two to this forward group should work out really well. McLeod and Benson have done enough in the AHL to have every chance to make this roster as well. It’s not out of the question that we see Puljujarvi reach another level of play this year, whether it’s somewhere in this lineup, but honestly now that he’s bounced back and adjusted to the NHL (recouped value) it might not be with the Oilers. I do hope that he gets a shot at a big role, but as we’ve mentioned the forward group is getting crowded. On defence Bouchard is the point of intrigue, especially with the likes of Jones and Bear shipped out. I don’t think he’ll be as good as Dougie Hamilton, but it’s not unreasonable to hope he eclipses fellow offensive defenceman Tyson Barrie in the next 2-3 years. Holland’s track record of slow development from Detroit, as well as the acquisitions of Keith and Ceci tell us all we need to know about Broberg or Samorukov having a chance at cracking this years roster.
Los Angeles: poised to be one of the most exciting, or at least surprising, teams LA has a plethora of candidates for this breakout player discussion. Primarily is the eventuality of Quinton Byfield, who had a strong underage rookie AHL campaign. It’s not too much to think that he could lead this team in points this season, especially with fellow centres Kopitar and Danault taking on the heavy lifting defensively. Outside of that predicting what this lineup might look like is near impossible, and the reason the Kings are often atop any prospect ranking. Kupari, Thomas, Kaliyev, and Turcotte could each make a strong case for making the opening night roster, but based on how crowded the forward group is to start will most likely continue their work in the AHL. On defence there are at least 2 candidates for breakout player, depending on your definition. Mikey Anderson was one of the Kings’ best defenders last season, so the only breakout would be in recognition. Bjornfot played well for the 20-odd games he was in the lineup and will look to continue impressing. Clague is the oldest and has played the least NHL games of these 3 defenders, but with strong skating skill, a large frame, and some offensive abilities might catch a lot of people’s eyes. In a division where the 3 seed is anyone’s game, LA will be a young, fun team that many will be paying attention to and rooting for.
San Jose: The Sharks could really use some breakout players, as some new skill and energy would go a long way towards reinvigorating this franchise. It’s probably at least another year until some offensive options in Gushchin or Wiesblatt are pushing for a spot. There are some forwards like Chmelevski, Blichfeld, and Gregor who could be NHL regulars, but probably not enough to get national attention. The most critical spot will be in net, an area of great concern for the past few seasons. Aiden Hill and James Reimer isn’t exactly a world beating tandem, but could easily give the Sharks their best performance in years. They have Ben Gaudreau (many years away), but much closer are a pit of 23 year olds in Melnichuk and Sawchenko. Neither have played a large volume of games in a season to this point, but specifically Sawchenko has posted really promising results, leading the AHL Barracuda in save percentage the last 2 seasons, yet still splitting time in the ECHL.
Seattle: the Kraken don’t have years of development to fall back on here, but nonetheless found a way to acquire some options for breakouts thru the expansion draft. On defence the most likely is Cale Fleury, as Dunn probably shouldn’t qualify for such a distinction, even after a tough 2021. Up front lies perhaps the biggest x-factor for the team in Morgan Geekie. He’s scored at every level, including his limited amount of games in the NHL despite being used sparingly. That, and the Kraken’s scarcity of young players, centres, and goal scorers make a Geekie breakout a potentially franchise altering development. Alex True might also benefit from a change in scenery under similar criteria, although less likely.
Vancouver: outside of Demko, the biggest reason for a strong Canucks’ season is their top 9 forward group, among which depends on the strong play of a young trio. Dickinson is less of a breakout candidate and more so continuing his good play in a Canadian market, after a few years of playing a role with Dallas that saw him move throughout the lineup. Hoglander was quite good last season, but we should expect his growing influence on play and higher offensive numbers. Podkolzin is similarly well insulated and should have a chance to find a synergous role with good linemates. On defence we will see if Rafferty delivers on promising hype and if Chatfield can continue improving. Although he’s not as young or skilled as many in this conversation Tucker Poolman has an interesting possibility of fitting into this lineup partnered with Quinn Hughes. Personally I’ve liked his play, a good defender with smart enough support pass abilities, and it’s not out of the question he beats out Travis Hamonic for the high leverage opportunity.
Vegas: clearly in a different competitive level than the rest of their division, Vegas’ breakouts will mostly be concerning existing NHLers. Because of their centre group and his draft pedigree Nolan Patrick is a good place to start. He’s missed a lot of time due to injuries, so naturally staying healthy is a big part of it. He’s been effective so far, perhaps lacking in the dynamic qualities you’d expect from a potential 1st overall pick. The Knights have been famously effective at getting the most from their centres, and it’s not rare that a change in scenery can push a players play in a positive direction. Another highly drafted centre will have similar opportunities, as Peyton Krebs tries to make the roster. He has been practicing with Vegas as far back as the 2020 bubble, and posted really promising results in 24 WHL games and 5 AHL games before a 4 game preview in the NHL. Keegan Kolesar played really well last season, and with Tuch out to start the year he might have a good chance to run with an even greater role this season. On defence Hague and Whitecloud have already been performing at a high level, but the longer they stick around the more people will understand that. Brossoit will be in net more often than he was in Winnipeg, and I agree he has a good chance to deliver on those hopes as Vegas gave him a contract the going rate NHL backup, but there’s no reason to think he won’t continue improving and might be in line for a raise at the end of his current deal.

isabella for the oc thing !
Thanks Oliver!
Full Name: Isabella DuarteGender and Sexuality: woman, probably straight I don’t know I might change somethings during rewrites?Pronouns: she/herEthnicity/Species: Latina (her family’s been in Edmonton for a couple generations, also have no idea of the different countries her family’s all fun, she’s kind of underdeveloped so far)Birthplace and Birthdate: Edmonton, AB and August 21, 1996? I just made that upGuilty Pleasures: basically any sitcom off of a “worst TV shows ever” list, she’s watched and loved. she was also way too into planning her dream wedding, she was like 18.Phobias: fireWhat They Would Be Famous For: probably some sort of super viral video about a teacher doing good (she’s studying to be a teacher) or like being the Woman Behind The Man in regards to her husband’s musical career. What They Would Get Arrested For: Nothing? Maybe punching a creepy guy in self defense or to defend someone else.OC You Ship Them With: Andre (they’re married)OC Most Likely To Murder Them: I mean if we’re bringing in OCs from other scripts, then Kristen Adler from 221B because she’s a serial killer from Edmonton idk.Favorite Movie/Book Genre: any sort of realistic drama for both, she also loves really goofy comedy moviesLeast Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: she’s not that into arthouse cinema, but she thinks it’s only because she hasn’t taken the time to find some good films in that genre.Talents and/or Powers: no idea tbhWhy Someone Might Love Them: She’s very kind and understanding, she’s smart, she’s cool and chill, good to her family and friends. Why Someone Might Hate Them: She’s a hypocrite in regards to her views on maturity. Basically, the two main characters view maturity and adulthood as being all about Jobs, School, Marriage, Mortgages, Taxes. And they strive towards that and she tells them it’s bullshit. But she’s doing the same thing! Some people also might view her as weak just because she doesn’t have a temper or anger issues, she just tries to talk out her issues. Tries. Her optimism and views on romance might also bug some people. How They Change: see they don’t change! And that’s a massive problem I’m having with the script because she should change. She starts out perfect and it’s like “what the hell is the conflict here why would anyone choose someone else over her” so I gotta switch things around. I guess? In this current version of this character you could make a stretch and say she becomes more bitter and cynical about the world around her. (she’s one of those awkward characters where she’s not a main but she’s more important than being just a secondary character not that secondary characters aren’t important but you know)Why You Love Them: I………..like them, IDK if I love them. They need to be re-written. But I do like her! She’s pretty cool and understanding, and she’s sweet and romantic. She’s more complex, and smarter than people give her credit for. And she uh, serves a narrative purpose. So that’s always good.
