Bulbasaur- Law

Bulbasaur is law because he really just wants safety and stability, and we've seen he's willing to sacrifice things (attempting to put his friends under the bus in OITR comes to mind) in order to achieve that. I can sort of see an argument for neutral since he is not confrontational, but I feel as if he'd take the opportunities for order in the world if they were offered to him.

Cyndaquil- Neutral

Cyndaquil is neutral by merit of yo-yoing between the two ideals. It makes since, he's sort of the middle man between his two best friends. He generally is willing to concede to anothers will, though tepig wins out more often than not. This said, he does sort of cause The White ending (from IV) during OITR, and thats basically a neutral ending. OITR also establishes how active he is in seeking balance, which further cements my take.

Tepig-Chaos

Tepig is chaos because he wants to be divorced from most conventions of the world, and his impulsiveness befits the ideology of chaos. He often finds himself at the mercy of those stronger than him, or those with authority, which echoes the SMT 1 chaos protag pretty well. He clearly doesnt care for rules or anything like that. I dont feel I need to explain this one much!

Chespin- Neutral

Chespin is very neutral. He subscribes to many facets of both ideologies, which puts him at neutral. He desires mediation. He likes to follow the law, and is cooperative with them. At the same time, he does willingly break the law for personal reasons. He likes things to be stable and friendly, but he encourages people to be themself (until they evolve?) He's just in the middle I say! Though maybe a bit more law-like? I dunno.

Mudkip- Law

Mudkip is pretty law, but you have to think beyond the literal law in universe. There are rules and methods to his madness, and he feels very righteous in the fact he kills pokemon. The "Greater good" sorta deal is VERY law. Theres also how he wanted chespin to kill sylveon.

Fennekin- Chaos

Fennekin is relatively chaos, though maybe not by choice per say. She doesnt seem concerned with following the law, and takes the paths that grant her what she wants without much consideration for others or rules. She craves "power" socially. I dont have a strong argument for this i wont lie </3

Dr. Sylveon - Law

in an extremely messed up way, he is pretty law... His philosophy is willing to do pretty horrible things that also benefit himself for a very rough "greater good". Mostly in reference to the rare candy scheme. People get the rare candies they want, he gets money for doing operations on them, yadda yadda. He seems methodically structured.

Mr. Lugia - Neutral

Mr Lugia is neutral because he is willing to escape responsibilities (being a legendary) but also is tethered strongly to the rules. He wouldnt seem to want to sacrifice his freedom, but he adheres to the checks that give balance. Thus, he's neutral.

Jirachi - Chaos

I dont think I need to explain this, but yes, the god who purely wants to fuck with others to his own gain, amusement, and hates the rules. He wants FREEDOM. HARD.

After a few hours of rigorous training, I think I’m ready. Day 15 is a special day, after all. Welcome to the all-for-one Jack Frost special! 

1. Lucifrost 

Race: Herald

Alignment: Light-Law 

Lucifrost is a very strange Frost with a surprisingly intricate design, a demon that only appears in the Demikids and Devil Survivor games, typically as a mid-late game boss. Unlike what one might expect, he isn’t a frostified version of Lucifer- no, his backstory is far more fun. 

Lucifrost once was a Jack Frost, but he was exiled from the Frost family due to betraying them, much like Lucifer did to the Angels. Jealous, he wandered down to hell, eventually finding himself in the final layer, wherein he saw the frozen Lucifer in a lake of tears. Rather than feel pity, though, Lucifrost saw an opportunity… for profit. Frozen Lucifer was a perfect idol for the ice-obsessed fiend, who began to try and impersonate the fallen angel, eventually returning to hell after achieving a perfectly angelic form… only to see that Lucifer had long since departed. Likely despondent, he wandered aimlessly to find the king of demons for all of eternity, ending up crossing paths with the DemiKids and Devil Survivors protagonists along the way. 

While his backstory is silly, his design is fantastic, an interpretation of an angelic Jack Frost that makes him far more adorable than the Morning Star could ever be.

2. Frost Ace

Race: Genma

Alignment: Light-Neutral

The legendary hero of the Frost Lineage, Frost Ace makes himself known as a mid-game demon who exists as a parody of superhero media and, more specifically, tokusatsu sentai shows like Super Sentai.

Frost Ace mostly works as a 'good side' equivalent to Black Frost, being a heroic transformation that any Jack Frost is implied to be able to take to grow in power. I personally like to see Frost Ace, on top of that, also serving as a general in King Frost's army, as it adds on a bit to the whole 'Frost Kingdom' theme.

You getting tired yet? I'm nowhere near done!

3. The Frost Five!

Race: Frost

Alignment: Five

These bozos are each based on separate frozen deserts, save one, which is a cocktail. In order, Blue Hawaii Frost is based on the Blue Hawaii cocktail, Lemon Frost is based on lemon-flavored shaved ice, Melon Frost is based on melon-flavored shaved ice, Strawberry Frost is based on strawberry-flavored shaved ice, and lastly, Milky Frost is just ice cream.

Ahem.

4. Hee-ho-Kun

Race: Student

Alignment: Broke due to Student Loans

Less of a specific demon and more of a recurring character, Hee-ho-Kun is a demon who originates from SMT if... serving a minor role as a friendly Jack Frost who can become an optional party member, apparently enjoying going to school.

Unfortunately, in order to pay his college bills, he had to open a shop! In SMT 3: Nocturne, Hee-ho-Kun makes his grand return as a shop owner in Shibuya, though later finds his calling as a Black Frost, becoming an optional boss of the Kabukicho Prison area after being cleared, then becoming a recruitable party member once defeated, appearing in the Labyrinth of Amala.

Lastly, Hee-ho-Kun manages to get a girlfriend! In Megami Ibunroku: Persona, aka Revelations Persona, he appears at St. Hermelin HS as a student after it is frozen over as a result of the Snow Queen quest. Let's hope he got the education he hoped for, especially given his acquisition of a girlfriend!

Finally. The Jack Protags.

Ah, they truly are great. Let us bask in their brilliance lest we forget the greatest frosts of them all. Raiho is a personal favorite of mine.

Also, Jack Frost somehow got a Demonica? Enter Demon-hee-ho, a recurring boss in the Strange Journey games. Admittedly, I don't know much about SJ, but I find his inclusion to be really silly, so he gets a special shoutout among his protag contemporaries.

...And that's that! I hope you enjoyed the Jack Frost miniseries. I'm missing a few Jack's, such as the Petite Frosts, but I'm honestly just tired of doing Jack Bros. stuff. Let me have this break. Either way, though, the Frost blockade has been cleared. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming once our snowplows come by.

man i dont have enough brain juice to really talk about this succintly or even correctly but. atlus being under sega is. a weird fucking bag.

on one hand, atlus' works like metaphor, persona and smt seem to be rooted in a weird nationalistic frevor that leans very conservative. if you try to tap the themes and unwrap the layers of metaphor in the narrative, it tends to have a 'rara japan no.1 and foreigners scary plus should follow our emperor rule' vibe. not always, but consistent enough to be there if you look.

smt, devil summoner, devil survivor and the older persona games also have a very 'wipe the slate clean and remake a new world order' which ?????????? aight. ill accept this only in fiction and if its fun enough. sure.

sometimes they can get super critical too but ehh.

on the other hand, theres Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio or RGG, which made yakuza/like a dragon, a series about a beat them up crime drama featuring the bottom of society, has some of the most insightful, introspective and critical critic of the japanese society. this also extends to capitalism and colonialism. theres enough nuance in the series and humanity that the new successor of kiryu kazuma's protag seat is effectively a biracial Japanese Hawaiian Afro Jesus.

its very loud when it comes to 'fuck facism, be weird' and 'fuck you, treasure the now, protect and nurture it' especially in the recent series.

so the two studios seem to lie on polar opposite ends and its really, really fucking weird

I wonder how the smt v protag will be able to fuse into a nahobino productively with Tsukuyomi.

SMT V suggested that while each god has a specific human as their Knowledge, other fusions could be done, just less effectively. Zeus- and Baal if I recall- offered the protagonist to fuse with him instead of Aogami (fat chance), saying it wouldn't be as powerful but it would still elevate them.

But Tsukuyomi isn't a storm god, he's a moon god. Would that fusion even work? (Clearly it does, but) it seems like it would be a massive downgrade.

If any god can fuse with any human, why haven't the demons been fusing with humans willy-nilly, even just trying to find one in their vague category?

Narratively, an interesting idea would be that when you fuse with Tsukuyomi, you start at level 1 again. That probably won't happen, and it would probably be annoying for most players.

Okay, idk if this has been answered before, but does your protag oc have a name? (Even if not canon) Sorta like how SMT 1 protag has 3 names that are not canon or with Flynn where his name is the default one.

You want da truth….. I just have no idea where to begin with naming any of my guys. Esp protag. There’s ideas for maybe giving him a title akin to demifiend’s but at the same time I’m just not sure. i like to think he had a name at one point but since his personal journey involves transformation and rebirth into smth Transhuman I don’t think that name is relevant anymore. Nor is it really remembered. Like on the tip of his tongue yet it sits comfortable because… his new experiences and existence make the new him.

Race wise he’s a Golem but I don’t rlly think that’s a fitting title cuz there’s many many golems he’s just a unique one. Maybe he’s called that as a derogatory attention grabber by a few npcs. Then there’s the idea since protag and heroine incidentally become the Adam and Eve of the next human evolution he’s akin to Adam but that’s not what his whole purpose/existence is tied to so Adam isn’t fitting to me.

I. favourite colours: Orange, green, blue and yellow.

II. favourite flavours: Rye, fish, curry and mango. Oh, and also seafood.

III. favourite genres: Fantasy, action, sci-fi and autobiography/sth based on a real person's life. Talk shit all you want how some of that is ignoring some details to make it more grandeur, it's more interesting to me than the basic TLC content.

IV. favourite music: It's in general pop and/or europop with some variabilities like Linkin Park & old bands like Genesis. I tend to prefer bands what have varying chords and melodies and can sing decently both on record and live. (Also fr, if you ask me if Eurovision music is in that list the answer is yes. Most of the songs are bangers.)

V. favourite movies: As of late it's Imitation Game, Hercule Poirot and Haunting of Venice, and Spirited Away.

VI. favourite series: Regarding video games it's Yakuza, SMT, Project Moon games, Kirby and Zelda.

VIII. last series: Either YGO's 2nd season (Battle City arc) or Air Crash Investigation.

IX. last movie: Detective Pikachu's movie adaptation. I had seen it once before and yeaaah I can say that it's WAY different to the game. The protags are different, the side NPC reporter is different and the list of allies is different and the vibe is waayy different. (Also the timing it takes place is different. Movie has it after 2 months, game has the 2 weeks - 1 month.) In hindsight it wasn't as mediocre as I remembered but after playing the game I preferred the calm vibes of the point-and-click 3D Sherlock Holmes game.

Imma judge the smt protags' drip

SMT 1: Damn, now that is some lesbian drip. I so would wear those pants to work in a factory or as a mechanic if I had any kind of skill or ability. I love the disquette, we should still use those.

SMT1 Modern designs:

Civilian form, what the fuck are those pants? Why the waistband like that??? You need a belt. Jacket is ok, pocket tits.

Now battle form is much better, I love those puppet looking gloves. Katana is ass lookin but the double pistols is very nice. That neck cover is surprisingly effective at making him look tougher and those tits look cushioned af. Nice boots, step on me.

old 2013 interview with the head of the p4 english localization team

This is an old, old interview with the head of the P4 eng localizer team, Yu Namba (no, not the Like a Dragon character). Afaik, he has since left Atlus and now works at Spike Chunsoft.

I thought this was pretty interesting to read since I do talk a lot about the changes made on this blog.

Some of the things he mentioned:

Persona 4 was released in America as "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4". The interviewer asks about why this started, and why it stopped. Basically, they started adding the SMT title to other things after SMT3 was released overseas. The reason why it stopped with Arena and Golden is because they felt that "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 Arena/Golden" was too long lol...

The JP title of Arena is Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, or P4U for short. It was changed to Arena in America because Persona 4 Ultimate would sound like "the ultimate version of Persona 4" while Arena better conveyed that it's a fighting game. The JP title of Golden is Persona 4 The Golden. It was changed to just Persona 4 Golden to make it more grammatical and match how Arena's title was localized.

In JP, the protagonist's Understanding stat ranks up from "Buddha-like" on rank 4 to "Motherly" on rank 5, with the word used for motherly being a kind of affectionate term. In English, these were swapped with Buddha-like being renamed to Saintly so the protag instead advances from Motherly on rank 4 to Saintly on rank 5. He says this is due to America being Christian lol. (Tbqh, I thought they just mixed up the translations of rank 4 and 5, but it was actually intentional.)

Junes is named after the word Jeunesse (the French word for youth?). Hence why the Japanese commercial jingle is "Every Day, Young Life", and the meat combo is called the "Ultra Young Set".

During the King's Game sequence when Naoto explains her family lineage, in the Japanese game Chie references the detective novels and manga Kindaichi. Since Kindaichi isn't big in America, Namba changed this to Chie bringing up the Kuzunoha clan, assuming that people who played the earlier games and Raidou would understand.

Famitsu brings up Kanji's Shadow, saying that it seems to be a topic amongst North American fans on the web. Namba comments that while his Shadow looks and acts over the top, the theme of not being accepted as you are is pretty serious. There was a player who said that the stance the game takes really saved them, and Namba thinks that's cool that the game touched someone like that.

In the past, Persona 1 was localized as Revelations: Persona and everything was American-ized/4Kids-ized, but it was released back when people in America weren't as familiar with JRPGs/Weeb stuff/whatever. Since the interest has gone up due to anime and manga being published in the west, they didn't feel the need to give Persona 3 the same treatment when localizing it. The "M" rating in America (versus Japan's Ages 12 and up rating) is because of the Evokers -- even though it isn't actually a gun, they anticipated how it would be seen.

I feel like this counts as well for most of the spin off games where they either a) lack social lives or b) weird/ social outcasts

1 and 2 fall into the same boat of not really having friends or much in terms of social lives (I'm not the most familiar with these two)

Demifiend's introduction is that they go to a hospital to visit their teacher with their classmates, important to emphasize that they're not entirely their friend. That can also be seen in how they talk and treat you during that introduction and rest of the game.

The Marine is the marine. Smt Doom Guy. I think to that one scene in Eternal where doom guy grabs the key card around a guy's neck and drags them to the terminal to enter the building. I feel like the marine isn't too far off from doing something like that.

Flynn absolutely didn't have much social life being a lower class farm boy who came to Micado with their only friend to try and become samuri.

Nanashi only had his adoptive sister and the hunter association. The thing about Flynn and Nanashi is that they both seem to grow out of lack of social lives into flourishing social lives, you know until the horrors but still.

The Devil Survivor Protaginists feel like they're defined by the few friends they both have respectfully. The DeSu2 protag only had Daichi and just so happened to bump into Io when the accident happens.

Like all the persona protags are at the beginning of their stoires feel like they don't have much social standing or lives. P3 and P5 are good examples. P3 because the protaginist is depressed and Joker becomes a social outcast because of the charges but still it seems like even he before being transfered was alone.

It's like a core piece of protag DNA or something.

ngl i think the reason why mainline smt protags are easy to love is because most of them lack social lives
