Grandma Smurf | Vieille Schtroumpf | Abuela Pitufa
(Grandpa Smurf)
You know the project’s gotten big when I’m going back and remaking old posts. Anyways, when I originally made this, I forgot to change the nose. Now I have!
The original description was this:
A girl version of Grandpa Smurf… would be similar to Nanny, but with Nanny’s weird quirks replaced with Grandpa’s weird quirks. I never want to edit out a beard again. The apron is meant to replace his/her overalls. I don’t have much to say.
Smurfs Genderbend Project, inspired by the art of @/jeronendeconinck1 on Instagram. This design project is a simple one- what if the Smurfs had been designed as girls, instead of boys? What would they look like, and what would change about the comics, shows, and movies? This is mostly a Doylist look at the concept, as if it’s a world where everything is the same as ours except Peyo decided to make a village of tiny blue girls instead of tiny blue boys.

Finance Smurf | Schtroumpf Financière | Pitufa Financiera
Who the hell decided the Wikipedia order of Smurfs characters? There’s like four completely irrelevant weirdos before Lazy Smurf, and then we don’t even get to Dreamy Smurf until #82.
Anyways, I hate this capitalist bastard, which is why I was slow making her. Gold because rich or whatever. Fuck Finance Smurf.

Enamored Smurf | Schtroumpf Amoureuse | Pitufa Romántica
I don’t have notes for this one, she’d pretty much be the same as her male version. Just head over heels for Smurfo, desperately so. I really just went with my gut for the design.

Farmer Smurf | Schtroumpf Paysanne | Pitufa Labradora/Pitufa Granjera
A hardworking country girl with a heart of gold, satisfied with her life and not wanting anything more unless it comes to love. So, essentially canon Farmer Smurf, but as a woman. Not much would change! I can definitely see Speak For Yourself, Farmer Smurf happening here, but there might be an aspect added about her not being confident in the way she looks.
Design notes: I kept her suspenders but attached them to a skirt instead of pants, and gave her a white shirt underneath to evoke that sort of “simple farmgirl” vibe you get when you look at, for example, Wizard Of Oz Movie!Dorothy. I also kept her clogs and straw hat. The dark brown braids are another farmgirl trope thing.

Dabbler Smurf/Doctor Smurf | Docteur Schtroumpf
As his cartoon debut episode aired before Doctor Smurf's comic debut, I decided to keep them the same person as in the cartoon. However, I couldn't find the French version of "Dabbler Smurf" anywhere.

Architect Smurf
(I don’t know her french name)
I should not have done these in Wikipedia order. Who even remembers Architect Smurf? Anyways, I decided to make her have a ponytail like Handy Smurf, but gave her red hair and different bangs to make her look different.

Painter Smurf | Schtroumpf Peintre | Pitufa Pintora
Painter, as a girl, would probably paint a lot less of Smurfo than her canon counterpart does of Smurfette. Something in my mind thinks that a female painter would be written as painting more still lifes and flowers and the like. I don’t know why. She’d still have her temper, though.
Design notes: Her design takes her bowtie and makes it smaller so she can tie her hair in pigtails. This was originally meant to be a ponytail, but it was hell on earth editing her bowtie out, and pigtails can obscure some of the same stuff the bowtie did.

Scaredy Smurf | Schtroumpf Peureuse | Pitufa Miedosa
Scaredy Smurf would probably stay pretty much the same, personality-wise and treatment-by-the-narrative-wise. There’s nothing particularly masculine or feminine about him. I modeled him after his “Scarlet” disguise in the Smurfs In Disguise NTOB episode- while that episode was a fucking mess of transmisogynist manly man in a dress jokes directed at Hefty, and of Papa Smurf being an abusive bastard, Scaredy was adorable as a girl. Or maybe I just have a thing for crossdressing Smurfs in red wigs. I’m not going to unpack that.
Also, for some reason, while I was drawing this, I got “Look At Me I’m Sandra Dee” from the Grease soundtrack stuck in my head. Maybe it’s just the similar-sounding names.

Timid Smurf/Actress Smurf | Schtroumpf Timide/Schtroumpf Actrice
(Timid Smurf/Actor Smurf)
This one has no model sheet I could find, so I had to do two images. As Actress, she’d have to be able to grab and wear a lot of wigs, so I gave her short hair. That’s all.

Witchy Smurf | Apprentie Schtroumpf
(Alchemist Smurf)
Alchemist Smurf appears in one comic, so she wouldn’t change much personality-wise. I did rename her to “Witchy Smurf” in English, however, and I made her look like a stereotypical witch.
Design Notes: The white lines in her hair are inspired by Grey Smurfette in The Smurf Menace. The base image is from toy concept art- see original below the cut.

Clumsy Smurf | Schtroumpf Maladroite | Pitufa Tontina
Cute Clumsy Girl is already a trope, so I don’t think Clumsy would change much. She’d probably be positioned more as the main love interest for Smurfo (rather than Hefty being the main one as in canon) because of Boy x Sweet Stupid Girl being considered more “normal” (read: gender conforming) than Boy x Tough Jock Girl. As a result, Pansy wouldn’t be written as a love interest.
I have design notes on this one! I gave her blonde hair because blonde hair is associated with kind characters (the “hair of gold, heart of gold” trope) and with stupid characters (the “dumb blonde” trope). Clumsy is both. I gave her fluffy pigtails to make her look innocent and naive. Also, you can’t see it in this pose, but she has shorts underneath her skirt. This is because it would be very difficult for the animators to make sure the scene was always at an angle where we couldn’t see up Clumsy’s skirt, so putting shorts underneath it would allow for modesty and a higher amount of viable camera angles.

Baby Smurf | Bebe Schtroumpf | Bebé Pitufa
She’s a baby. Nothing would change, especially since they tend to avoid referring to Baby with any pronouns in the cartoon. So I gave her eyelashes and a smaller nose, and called it a day.

Slouchy Smurf | Slouchy Smurfling | Schtroumpf Mollassonne | Pitufa Tristona/Pitufita Tristona
This one’s not a tomboy or a super feminine little girl. Canon Slouchy is pretty gender ambiguous in both looks and behavior, so she wouldn’t change much. Just add some hair, and ta-da! She’s a girl.
Design notes: Hair is cropped into a short bob for convenience, vaguely resembling the Dorothy Hamill hairstyle I gave Tracker but straightened to show her relaxed personality (her hair hangs limply down- compare and contrast with Brainy’s, which stays stiff and straight no matter what). Slouchy’s hair is blonde, so that with the brunette Nat and the redhead Snappy, they form a Blonde, Brunette, Redhead trio. Her clothes stay the same, as it didn’t look right to change them. She also gets fancy eyelashes, because that’s how her eyelashes look in canon when they show up! The comics would probably give her more “standard” eyelashes, however.
