[ENG TRANS] 170613 Kim Donghan's Interview with OSEN

Q: When did you start having great interest for music? Donghan: Since young, I’ve watched music broadcasts. I enjoy singing along and I follow the dance steps too. So when I was in high school, year 1, in Daegu, I started being in a dance team. Since then, while standing on stage and hearing the cheers from the audience, my dream to be a singer grew bigger.

Q: You must have your own role model, right? Donghan: The first (choreography) that I learned was BTS sunbaenim’s “Boy In Luv” and EXO sunbaenim’s “Growl”. I liked Bangtan sunbaenims even when they weren’t as recognised/well-known then, and I thought they were really cool. Their choreography and songs are my style. I haven’t seen them in real life yet, but I definitely would want to see them.

Q: You must’ve strayed far away from studying. Donghan: Honestly, I didn’t study hard, but I didn’t play around too. I didn’t smoke or drink. My grades were in the middle too/so-so. To be specific, I was 18th out of 34 people. Haha.

Q: You must’ve been popular, right? Donghan: Firstly, since I was in a dance team. I didn’t know why our team worked very hard, but we just did. As compared to other teams, our synchronization was more perfect, and we attended many school festivals of other schools. Because of that, I gained fans who recognised me, and sometimes, there were some female students who come and find me in school. Later on, it was said that there was someone who was from “The Face” dance team coming out in Produce 101.

Q: We heard that you had a lot of awards too. Donghan: In Daegu, we won a dance competition 2 years consecutively, and were also 1st place for 2 years consecutively in a K-pop cover dance competition in Dongsungro. I think we took all the awards in the dance competitions in Daegu.

Q: Looking at it, your hometown is Daegu but you totally don’t use the Daegu accent? Donghan: I moved to Seoul last year, in April. After moving, I attended an acting academy and fixed my accent a lot. But whenever I’m excited, my accent comes out. Haha.

Q: Alright, now we’ll be talking about “Produce 101”. When did you first hear about joining and how did you feel at that time? Donghan: It was around December last year when I heard about it. Honestly at first, I wondered if the male edition would work out well. Girls are more brighter/lively as compared to boys, so I thought of how when 101 boys come out, it could be dull. Someone even told me that it might be gross. But even so, it’s a program that does a lot of K-Pop covers, which is what I usually do.

Q: How did you feel during the first filming? Donghan: I stayed up the night before and went to film, I realised then that filming is really difficult. The filming period was extremely long. Because we were sitting for long hours, my waist was hurting too. As much as I was excited, there were many difficult parts too.

Q: I’ve always been curious about this – is crying really that common among guys? Donghan: Among the 101 trainees, there were hyungs who already completed their military. They said that (the show) was as difficult as the military. I stayed up on many nights, and while staying up I danced, so it can’t be helped but to think that it was physically difficult. While calling our parents, it seems like all the members cried. They allowed us to call at the point when we were physically and mentally tired. Haha. During the time where “Pick Me” level evaluation ended, the crew gage our phones. And while speaking on the phone, in 3 minutes, I cried after not crying for a few years. I’m really someone who doesn’t have tears.

Q: Donghan-ssi, how many times did you cry? Donghan: Twice. During the cover of “Call Me Baby”, there were conflicts of opinions among tje members, so I found it hard then, and I cried at that time. When I was 35th, I didn’t cry because I was happy, but I cried because it was so to separate ways. I was trying to hold it back, but my tears came out as soon as I made eye-contact with Starship’s Lee Gwanghyun. At that time, the crew were surprised as well. They said they were surprised because I’m not that type (to cry).

Q: Was there a time where you felt like you wanted to stop? Donghan: We prepared for “Pick Me” in 3 days. We almost didn’t have any sleep. At that time, because it was winter, everyone’s immune system was weak. We caught a cold and were like zombies. I wasn’t in the right state of mind. The choreography was really hard, since it went on for 3 days and nights, at that time, I really wanted to go back. But because of that (happening), I didn’t find the remaining missions to be very hard. Yoo Hwiseung hyung who was from the army said that “This is like a clean army” at that time.

Q: How did you feel when you were called to be a candidate for the 35th place? Donghan: I wanted to give up. There was only one seat left, and it didn’t seem like my name was going to be called. I thought I was definitely going to be eliminated since my rank for the previous week was at 34th. But when my name was called in the 4 candidates to be the 35th place, I felt puzzled. It felt different to be called as a candidate that was going to make it right at the borderline. I felt really apologetic. I felt really sorry towards the hyungs and dongsaengs that I had bonded with, it felt as if I am trampling on them, and I thought that I should work hard.

Q: Filming for 5 months, when did you feel the happiest? Donghan: Previously, I felt like as if I was like a frog in a well(?), I felt the most happiest when I found myself trying, improving on my skills and developing.

Q: Could you tell us if you need to supplement anything, if there’s any? Donghan: I’ve never really had to dance while singing at the same time. I enjoy singing, but I get confused because it hasn’t been long since I had to sing and dance at the same time. I think when it comes to singing and dancing together, stability is most important.

Q: You’re considered the member who regretfully had little screen time. Is there anything that you wished had most definitely came out on broadcast? Donghan: I think the fact that the image or me practicing not briefcases was slightly regretful. We joke around a lot too, but when it’s serious, we work hard and put in a lot of effort too but it’s regretful (because it wasn’t shown). During the “Shape of You” stage, fans gave Noh Taehyun hyung the nickname “Noh Sensei” after watching the image of how he guided and lead the team. I also stayed up and taught Park Sungwoo hyung too. At that time, both of us practiced a lot, Sungwoo hyung too showed very human sides of him but it was regretful that these parts didn’t came out on broadcast.

Q: If you had to name your best stage, according to you? Donghan: Of course, I think of the “Shape of You” stage. It was the first encore that come out of the male edition of Produce, and the on-scene reactions were the best. That too was regretful as it wasn’t captured well on broadcast. It was a stage I expected a lot from, so it was a pity that even our individual/solo parts were shown as a full-shot.

Q: During the campus life, there would’ve been strict rules, have you ever went against it? Donghan: I think smokers have it the hardest. Mine was a small matter, I lost the lamp that was shared with us to use when we’re writing our diary. So I received 3 demerits for losing an item.

Q: In the end, you were eliminated as well. Donghan: On that day itself, we were also surprised among ourselves among the unexpected reversal in rankings. In Season 1, those in Top11 was mostly fixed, but this time, it kept changing. It’ll be good if I could make it through too, but I kind of expected it because “I Know You Know” stage was ranked last. Originally, it was to pick 22 people, but they only picked 20 this time, so I just waited with a light heart.

Q: You showed a pretty confident image of your dancing in the entire season, but if there were someone who you considered a competitor, who was it? Donghan: Actually, it hasn’t been long since I took formal lessons for dancing so although I would say I dance well, among the 101 trainees, there were people who danced very well. Ong Seongwoo hyung and Noh Taehyun hyung dance the best. Perhaps between them, I think Taehyunie hyung dance the best. You can tell by his expressions and strength when he dances.

Q: Your mum wrote a hand written letter in Daegu, and even handed out flyers, and the support comment that your company’s representative wrote on her SNS became a hot topic. Donghan: I felt apologetic. If I did well from the start and had a good ranking, she (mother) wouldn’t need to do all those, but because my rank was low, she suffered a lot too. I didn’t feel good. My mother isn’t someone who cries a lot too but as she looks at the image of me crying, she cries along too. So when I was eliminated this time, I felt as if it was really regretful. She kept asking when I would come back to Daegu and that she wants to hurry and see me.

Q: While filming for Produce 101, you must’ve met many celebrities. Donghan: BoA representative is really beautiful. I was really thankful for the advices she gave during filming. I remember Leeteuk sunbaenim too. During a short break in between filming, I remembered the words he said, it was ‘I was a trainee like all of you too, I understand how all of you feel, in SM too there were a lot of competition so I know how hard it is. Just hold it back, because once it ends. some time you may miss this. Just do your best now’.

Q: You would remember the coaches too, right? Donghan: The coach who guided me the most was Kwon Jaeseung teacher. Kahi teacher is not that scary as I expected, I was thankful for her teaching tenderly. Kahi teacher also made “DongCenPre” (Donghan in the Center is Pretty). That was something that made me known/recognised.

Q: In the end, who do you think will win? Donghan: I hope Park Jihoon will win. During “Pick Me”, we were in the same level and we practiced a lot together. Since then, we got closer so it’ll be great if a friend of mine wins. I think it’ll look cool for the first person to be #1, will become the #1 in the last episode too.

Q: Now, all that’s left is your debut, so what kind of idol do you want to be? Donghan: My role model is BTS, and among them, I like Jungkook sunbaenim. I’m working hard to practice on my singing, so I can be an idol like Jungkook sunbaenim, who’s good in singing, dance and everything. My goal is to be an idol that boys will follow my performance.

Q: How long will you take until your debut? Donghan: I think I still need to practice a little more. While watching the broadcast, I feel that I lack in a lot of areas, other members are also not prepared. I would like to debut in a 7-membered group. I think the balance in a 7-membered group is good. Q: If you had to say a word to the fans who are supporting you? Donghan: As compared to others, my face couldn’t shine much. There were also nothing much that could make you ‘fall for me’, but all of you discovered and liked me just by looking at my performance videos, and I was able to go up until the 3rd mission. Therefore I’m really thankful. I’ll work harder in practice to meet expectations and never forget that love I’ve been given, and so that I will make my debut coolly as soon as possible.
