This is a metal snail (Volcano Snail) that lives on underwater volcano vents in the Indian Ocean. Its shell and scaly feet both are armoured with layers of iron, making it the only animal to incorporate iron sulfide into its skeleton 🐌

Glimpse into my life: Young-Sir's Education

(Young-sir is my four year old son)

Snail: "Okay, hon. Let's try this again. Who is your favourite One-Piece?"

Young-Sir: "Zoro with three swords and a happy-grumpy face."

Snail: "Good choice. Who is mama's favourite one-piece?"

Young-Sir: "Benn Beckman with the big gun, Sabo with fire, or donkey oaty rosin aunty."

Snail: "Yes to all of those-."

Young-sir: "-And Beckman is my favourite too."

Snail: "It's okay. Mama can share, we're a good sharing family. Now, big question. Are you ready?"

Young-Sir: "Ready."

Snail: "What does Luffy say?" *fully expecting a 'Gum-Gum' response*

Young-Sir: "いえでござる."

Snail: "W-What does Luffy say??" *perplexed af*

Young-Sir: "いえでござる."

Snail: "What-?"

Young-Sir: "-When Luffy has the sword and Zoro wants to share. He says 'いえでござる' and Zoro says 'ちょっとおれにみする'."

Snail: "...How many times have you watched this??"

Young-Sir: "It's my favourite. And your favourite is Benn Beckman."

Just found my first ever snail, Gary, dead in the enclosure.

It’s been such a tough past couple weeks with the loss of my cat and dog, as well as the loss of two other of my snails at the start of October. I’ve had so much going on that I’ve yet to hold a funeral for those two. As fate would have it, Gary passed exactly one month after Turtle and Sandy did. Gary has been with me for a year and a half, since April 2022, and has made such a profound impact on me.

I’m even hesitant to bury him due to the beauty of his shell. It always made it incredibly easy to spot him among the others, with most of it being that of a classic garden snail, but a portion near his opening being a light grey splotch of shell, almost as if he was injured and decided to patch up his shell in a different font.

Two short months ago I lost my second and third snails, Shelly and Gromley. It brings me such peace to know that Gary is once again in the company of his friends. I will miss him dearly, but my mom, our pets, and most importantly my snails, have taught me the true fragility and fleeting nature of this thing we call life.

To anyone who might be reading this: if you love someone, be they a human or an animal, tell them. If you can’t tell them, show them. And if you can’t show them, tell the wind. I walk home and I tell the wind tales of my cat and of my dogs and of my snails. I tell the bear shaped mailbox down the road of those who I’m unable to converse with, and it’s as if they hear me, or at least I am putting out my side of the story. Tell the wind. Tell the barking dogs. Tell the mailbox. Tell something if you cannot tell or show the person or animal you love that you love them. That’s all you have to do. If not for them, but for yourself.

Life is fleeting, love is eternal.
