Set some time into the future when Melanie has returned to the train and starting dating Ruth properly. Angst with a happy ending.

“Ruthie? You seen my shirt anywhere? I swear I left it right here last night…” Ruth stood in front of the sink, frozen in terror. She was only supposed to borrow it for the night, something to stave off the nightmares as she was far too bashful to ask for a cuddle, and return it when Melanie was still blissfully asleep. Typical of her to screw up such a ridiculously simple plan. Adding insult to injury, that same bloody nightmare had come to her anyway. Ruth held her breath as she waited for the rummaging to stop. As she heard footsteps approaching the bathroom door, Ruth scrambled to tear the shirt off herself, tossing it behind the shower curtain just as the door creaked open and Melanie peered inside. She stood in silence for a long moment, taking in the sight of her shaking and naked girlfriend, before meeting Ruth’s gaze for the briefest second until she’d already bowed her head in apparent resignation to the rage, the humiliation, to come. Melanie’s voice was infinitely softer as she repeated the inquiry. “Darling? You alright?” Without a word, Ruth turned around, bent down to pick the garment up off the shower floor and handed it to Melanie, a barely audible apology addressed to “sir” leaving her mouth before she could help it. As she clutched the shirt to her chest, revelling in the lingerings of Ruth’s perfume on it, Melanie could finally understand he’d broken her in exactly the same ways.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

-Will you just leave it, Melanie?! I didn’t get a blink of sleep last night, that’s all. You know how it gets when we drive through these mountains. Anything odd I may have said or done, you can chalk it all up to the frankly deplorable lack of sleep and caffeine in my system! Now, coffee from First or my kitchen?

-Honey, please. I’m not forcing you to talk, not ever, but I can see you aching to tell your story.

Ruth turned away to wipe at her eyes before giving Melanie an icy stare.

-There’s nothing to talk about. Hurry up and make up your mind, before I won’t bring you any.

-Ruth… You called me ‘sir’. You’ve never shaken like that in all these seven years, not with us on the brink of extinction. And I saw the scars, honey, I saw them… He branded us all like that, you know? I could see the shame in your eyes, the terror. Any marks you may carry, you don’t carry alone. 

To empathize her point, Melanie unclasped her bra and turned her back to Ruth, whose vision was quickly blurred by tears she was still too shocked to wipe away. Through the haze, however, she could see the thin, straight white lines criss-cross between her shoulder blades. They seemed to form a W and an M on top of each other. Melanie’s voice wavered as she explained:

-W’s his work. Was a hassle carving the M on top, but it was worth it. What he did to you, whatever it was… It doesn’t define you, Ruth. It never will. We are so much more on our own.

-I… I don’t know what to say.... I’m so sorry, I’m so, so sorry!

The apologies were whimpers as Ruth wrapped her arms around Melanie, burying her head in the crook of Melanie’s neck as she cried silently. 

-Don’t be sorry, honey. You’ve been that plenty enough. I’ve scrubbed myself clean of him. Clean of the guilt, too. 

Ruth couldn’t bear the warmth and adoration in Melanie’s gaze as she finally turned to face her, but didn’t resist her soft lips pressing on hers. The tears would not stop, but she kissed them all away. 

-His myth is all smoke and mirrors. Including the part where it all somehow adds up to being your fault. You didn’t freeze this world, Ruth. You don’t need to repent for every flake of snow.

Only five?!!!! Ughh! This is cruel. How can I possibly survive without the utter brilliance of season 1 in its entirety?! Am I to make due with just scraps?! Aggghhhhh!

But, okay, okay. In all seriousness, if I was stuck on a deserted island in desperate need of entertainment, I would choose:

1x06 Trouble Comes Sideways

Highlights Include: MY GURL JINJU! Mel and Jinju doing yoga! Besties. Labor strike! Till having her moral crisis and standing up to Osweiller. Josie! Josie being such a good spy! Josie organizing everything! Josie telling Zarah she can't tell her anything because she knows she can't be trusted. Lights and Aus helping Winnie and The Tail see outside for the first time in forever. The contrast of Melanie addressing Third while they shout insults versus later when Ben gives his speech and they're all so grateful not even knowing she saved them. Pelton! Layton being the literal worst patient ever. Melanie listening to the train. Mel and Ben flirting in the middle of a train crisis. Running away to Tahiti. The dream. Audrey's outfits. Boki! Boki and the kids! Melanie mentoring baby Miles! Ruth's speech! Layton and Melanie in the subtrain. Melanie explaining the drawers. They're lifeboats. The emotion in her voice. Melanie saving the goddamned train. Again. Piece of cake. With that little strand of hair out of place. God. Love it. Melanie and Ben hearteyes. Read the room, Audrey. We're alive.

2x06 Many Miles from Snowpiercer

*Highlights include: MELANIE OPENING MONOLOGUE. Her little orange vest. (The one she survives in 😭) Melanie journaling. Her little beanie. Powerful hallucinations. The stupid avalanche. Melanie being smart af for 50 minutes straight. (aka her hot girl summer science bitch winter) The sweeties from Ben. (That's love bitch) The way Melanie says 'i am patched into the climate modeling program'. Flashbacks. Hallucination Wilford being evil and fabulous. Thrilling climate science. Hallucination Layton being smug. Rat kebab. Melanie humming. The calendar. 😭. Hallucination Alex being willing to forgive. Mom, I think I understand, now. Melanie gets a hug. (Sorta) Traumatizing final goodbyes. Everything that is said over the radio actually. Allie...I tried. I really tried. And I thought this time could be different. Gut-punch ending. The fucking train on fire.

2x03 A Great Odyssey

*Highlights include: ALL OF THE Alex and Melanie scenes. The music is nice. Melanie and Ben cuddles. OnE mOnTh 😭. Wilford Monologue. Jupiter! Big Alice is a Ben Free Zone. Wilford on his throne. Actually all the Wilford and Mel banter. Alex trying to see if she has her Mom's train powers. Emilia! 'Hi, I'm Alex's Mom.' Alex's drawings! Also all of the outside train shots. Ruth being salty. Tristan's voice crack. Wilford making Alex drive over the curve--that whole scene. Isn't it wonderful working as a team again, Melanie? I'm proud you're here, Alex. Push her over the hill. She'll be gone again. God, Alex's face when they do make it over because she knows it means she has to say goodbye?! Speaking of--all the goodbyes! Melanie and Ben kiss. 😭 Melanie and Ruth. 😭 Good luck Andre. 😭 MELANIE AND ALEX IN THE COLD LOCK. I wanted to keep you here longer. But we did what we had to do. I love you Allie. 3x09 A Beacon For Us All

*Highlights include: The split monologue between Ben and Mel. (Soulmates confirmed.) Flashbacks of Mel being the ultimate survivor. Black veined Melanie. The way she cried out for Ben when she was scared and alone. 😭 Smug Wilford. ALL THE REUNIONS. (so worth the wait) Layton carrying Melanie. Melanie and Alex being adorable. You're real. I kept you alive. Melanie and Ben. I knew you'd find me. Mel and Javi hug. Welcome home. Melanie AND HER TRAIN. With the little hula dancer in its spot. Wilford leaving Melanie behind & Alex watching shouting for her mom was so painful I sobbed (that actually broke me, and talk about ✨ poetic cinema ✨) & (2x06 is a fing masterpiece btw, the whole episode, I didn't know I needed an hour of Melanie being a smol depressed ball of PTSD being all alone wandering around the station and hallucinating, but that totally benefited me and the show)💀

All of the soft Melanie and Alex's scenes. They're so precious and very important to me in a sentimental way, specifically when they were bonding in 2x03 and also Mel having to leave the coldlock where they hug🥺😭🥺

The therapy scene in 1x10 where Melanie opens up with Audrey about Alex was very very well done and very beautiful (we need more Melaudrey scenes)

Ruth's speech in 2x07 cuz talk about some good character development

The revolution battle in the nightcar in 1x08 was awesome to see

Ruth interrogating Melanie and Mel telling Ruth the truth about Wilford and the train in 1x08 was bittersweet and left me shattered when Ruth sent Mel to be executed

Josie's "death" scene in 1x07, that was not a cool thing from Melanie at all, Josie deserved better there (and she felt all of that pain from the cold too)

The plot twist at the end of 1x01 for Melanie made me think "Hell yeah, I'm already loving this show!"

Melanie finally letting her hair down in 1x10 wearing a jean jacket and cargo pants really made me feel things and idk and I didn't expect her to get even more attractive but that totally did it for me. Omg how could I forget TANK TOP MELANIE, now that tops jean jacket Mel and every Melanie look ever, also this woman is seriously shredded so if you haven't seen Jen without a shirt on yet that makes ✨tank top Mel✨ even better When Melanie softly hovered her hand over the picture of her and baby Alex, it's so subtle yet so deep

Ruth pulling a gun on Layton in 1x10 and saying "I'm a dignitary!" made me laugh my ass off

Honorable mentions:

Melanie and Jinju meditating and Mel giving up was really cute (their whole friendship was cute and I miss it)

The end of 2x10 where I sat on my couch for a good 5-10 minutes and said "What the fuck" because I was and still am disappointed in the way there was no hint or cliffhanger that indicated Melanie could be alive and after Alex read her letter I just felt sad and empty from that, then I proceeded to cry seconds later because I would have to wait a whole damn year to find out whatever the hell happened to her yet here we are...a year later.....

All of Audrey's performances are truly incredible

A few other things that don’t make sense to me:

Javi heard Melanie on the radio before the deviation, but muted the signal to prevent Wilford from finding out. He then had all the possible time, at first with Ruth and Layton, and later when he was left alone, to try and talk to her. I mean, they deviated to rescue her but didn’t think of letting her know she should go to the tracks? She eventually felt the train and rushed there, but if Javi had done this obvious action she could have arrived in time to catch the car where Boki and Layton where waiting for her, before Wilford sped up.

Why didn’t they just reverse the train after Alex hurt Wilford? At that point they had control over both the engines, they could stop and go back (they mentioned something like this was possible in 2x03, when they were talking about the difficulties Snowpiercer could have had with the ascent to the station).

How many days did it take for the pirate train to come back to the station? Considering they had a whole engine for ten cars, I think it wouldn’t take much time. So where’s Mel’s body? Let’s leave aside the fact that the whole ‘walking into the white’ thing is out of character, but assuming that’s what she did, how far could she possibly go with a poorly charged (if not completely uncharged) suit? I don’t think it would have been covered by the snow so fast, also considering that it was damn sunny in those last scenes, so where is it?
