How are all your gifs so beautiful??
I always perform a ritual sacrifice before I open photoshop.
Jokes, jokes. Ummm I love you? You’re wonderful?? I, personally, think my gifs are getting worse and worse by the second lolol. I can’t figure out what’s wrong, but I’ve made multiple things and just deleted them without posting, because they were not great. But, thank you so much for not thinking they’re a disaster! I think making a decent gif comes down to three main things: file quality, coloring consideration, and sharpen decisions.
Any gif made with something under 720p is going to not be super awesome, quality wise. 1080p is really what you want. People sometimes say there’s no difference between giffing from 720 and 1080, but………………I’m pretty certain that’s super wrong. I always find that it’s a huge difference. I can gif a 720 video and then make the exact same gif in 1080 and you’ll be able to see which is better. It’s why people rush to make gifs after an episode has aired and the 720 download is the only one that’s up. So, they make the set out of that, first, just to make sure they’re getting in the rush – and then later they update them with the better 1080 versions. So, get 1080 if it’s available, is my advice on that.
Coloring consideration. Sometimes you just can’t force a gif to be able to hold a coloring that works on every other gif in the set. Especially when it comes to dark scenes. Accept when you can’t go any brighter, before it’s a grainy mess. I’ve come to actually like grain on my sets, that’s a thing I’m into right now. I’m in my Grain Era lmaooo, but there’s a limit. Some people are literally witches when it comes to color, but it’s hard to de-grain a dark scene when you boost the bright all the way up.
And sharpen settings. A sharpen can be too sharp. And smooth glowy sharpen can be too smooth. Sometimes it just depends on the file. Sometimes the scene. Choosing the wrong way to sharpen your gif can take a perfectly colored 1080p file gif and knock the quality down. So, I just stay aware of those three things while I’m making a set…and then I sacrifice the goat.

What’s the box content of the Redmi 9?
The Redmi 9 is available in Carbon Gray, Sunset Purple, Ocean Green and Pink/Blue colors. The box comes with two of those colors plastered atop. Luckily for us, one of the colors on the box, was what we saw when when opened the box. The full box content of the Redmi 9 includes:
Redmi 9 smartphone
Wall charger (10W)
USB Type-C cable
SIM ejector pin
Multiple language User manual
Design and Built Quality
If you are coming to the Redmi 9 from the Redmi 5 or 6, you may notice sharp changes in design, but if you’ve used the Redmi 8-series, or even the Note 8, you may not notice much changes in design. Generally, I found the Redmi 9 to be far sturdy than the Redmi 5 of 2018, but you might not notice much improvement in built-quality if you’ve owned a recent Redmi phone. Besides, who makes a crappy, cranky phone in 2020, except the device is sold below $70 USD, which the Redmi 9 is not.
Button placement remains industry stardard; power button and Volume rocker to the right hand side, IR blaster and secondary mic atop the phone, triple card slot to the left hand side and 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C and a single loud speaker at the basement.
The back of the device has a circular textured finishing, which help formed the visible circle towards the four rear camera modules at the back.
As far as built quality goes, the device is very sturdy but, it tad weighty too. Official specs mentioned 198 grams, but my review unit peaked at 202 grams without SIM and SD card inserted. But hey, a 5020mAh battery lies on the inside, which should make up for the extra weight.
Redmi has great display, if not for the brightness nit
The Xiaomi Redmi 9 spot a 6.53-inches display with a dew-drop notch above the screen and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. On paper, the device has Full-HD+ screen with 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution. At the price, the display has great colors, and don’t even think of noticing any pixel with your naked eyes. But there is one problem, the screen is not bright enough for outdoor use.
You’ll enjoy the display while indoor, and you might need to reduced the brightness at some lighting situations. But this is not the case during outdoor use, and you might need to shade the screen with your palm, especially under direct sunlight use. Surprsingly, a smaller, cheaper device with HD+ screen did better under direct sunlight than the Redmi 9.
A 1080p juicy screen marred with weaker brightness nit
I think Xiaomi is being careful not to strain users eyes with overpowering brightness. They even did include Reader Mode which ultimately alter display color reproduction and overall brightness for a better indoor use.
So display wise, the Redmi 9 is a win for some, and rather ‘not-win’ for others, sort of. The outdoor busy guys might not enjoy covering the display of their device while in use during sunny days, but for indoor loners like myself, the Redmi 9 screen is much more enough, considering other great features that this device offers, like the ones below.
Hardware can’t get any better at this price!
Intel inside!, Sorry I meat Mediatek inside!. The CPU inside the Redmi 9 is Helio G80 chip from Mediatek. The Helio G-series are Mediatek gaming CPU for not just mid-range smartphones anymore, but also for entry level device like the Redmi 9A and 9C.
So is the Xiaomi Redmi 9 a gaming smartphone? Yes, sort of. But should I be having the likes of Blackshark phone or, Asus ROG Phone or even the recent Lenovo Legion Phone on my table right now, I would never call the Redmi 9, a gaming phone (I’m looking at you Infinix Note 7). But since I don’t have those phones, and to anyone who don’t have any of those phones, well, the Xiaomi Redmi 9 is of course a gaming phone.
On paper, the Mediatek Helio G80 in the Redmi 9 has Octa-core CPU in all. There is a dual 2.0 GHz from Cortex-A75, and Six 1.7 GHz from Cortex-A55, pegged with Mali-G52 GPU (up to 950MHz). Our review unit has 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
Sadly, I don’t play games, for now, so I did not run any gaming performance test. But we’ll surely start doing gaming tests when we resume back on YouTube, hopefully soon. You can check out our long abandoned channel here, and if it is okay by you, please subscribe to it. We are surely coming back soon.
Talking about testing, we did run few benchmarking test though, and our results are shown below.
Xiaomi Redmi 9 Benchmarking Tests
AnTuTu V8: 200,007
GeekBench v5.1: Single-core: 361
GeekBench v5.1: Multi-core: 1,320
3DMark SSE – OpenGLES 3.1: 1,332
3DMark SSE – Vulkan: 1,323
Even though we did not run any practical gaming performance test, no one would expect a smartphone touching 200k in Antutu benchmark to stutter while surfing even the heaviest web page on the internet. Thankfully, the Redmi 9 and it Helio G80 CPU did not stutter during all our basic test.
But we wanted to see the limit of the phone, so we loaded 10 different web pages in 10 Google Chrome tabs, to see how many tabs will refresh when we switch back and forth between the tabs. Interestingly, the Redmi 9 and it 4GB RAM handled all the 10 tabs without a single refresh on any page. But when we pushed it to 20 tabs, some of the initial tabs started refreshing when revisited.
In all, the Helio G80 is a worthy mid-range offer, and offers hug and notable improvement over the Snapdragon 439 CPU used in the Redmi 8-series. to be, the CPU is one of the major stand-out specs of the Xiaomi Redmi 9.
Camera Performance of the Redmi 9
There are four camera modules at the back of the Redmi 9. The main 13-megapixel snapper, with 8-megapixel wide lens, 5-megapixel macro snapper and a 2-megapixel depth shooter, while a single 8-megapixel selfie seats upfront.
We tried out all the sensors above, and they all worked as intended. The 13-megapixel main snapper can capture crisp images in outdoor shots. As for indoor snaps, well, good images are assured with good lightening condition and stable hands. But on the contrary, images get grainy with high noise level.
Sadly, the single LED flash at the back did not really help much as well. I’m not even sure whether there is a software glitch here or something else. For example, when the LED light is set to auto, it won’t fire during some low-light shoots especially when the object is bright, but not adequately bright.
One other issue I have with the LED flash is, it use same focusing light as capture light. This is what I mean, usually, a smartphone LED light is fine-tuned to produced low light during image focusing, then fire a more stronger and bright light to capture the image. But the Redmi 9 is not so, same focusing light captures the image without even a blink, leading to sharp-less indoor images. But again, images taken under good lightening conditions are great.
Sincerely, I enjoy playing around with the camera on Redmi 9. You could also capture a larger filed of field on the device, that is where the bundled 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens comes in, but it can’t go above 118 degrees.
Then, there is the isolated 5-megapixel macro lens, which performed incredible well in my test. Thanks to the lens, I was able to count the legs of this House Fly, or is this Bush Fly?
Finally, the frontal selfie snapper, which can shoot in normal mode or AI portrait mode, and surpsingly, even though there is no LED flash upfront, the frontal 8-megapixel lens is still able to capture decent images.
Normal (Good light)
Portrait (Good light)
Indoor (low light)
Software is MIUI 11 Above Android 10.
The Redmi 9 runs on MIUI 11 out of the box with Android 10 underneath. Usually, with MIUI, you get all apps on the home screen without additional drawer, and the app drawer fans mostly resort to a third party launcher to get their beloved feature. Well, with MIUI 11, extra launcher may not be needed as the OS now have two home screen interface, of which the second interface is app drawer based.
One major argument for MIUI is the customization features. Through the MIUI theme app on the Redmi 9, users can access and download almost unlimited skin and themes of varying customization, given that viewing and interacting with Adsense Ads is okay with you.
Aside the Ads, it is important to note that Xiaomi have it own services and apps, tailored for the Chinese world, a little similar to Google service and apps. Most of these apps and services are preloaded even on the international variants of Redmi and Xiaomi Mi devices. And for phones like the Redmi 9 that come with Google Services and apps, as well as Xiaomi Services and apps, expect a handful number of bloatware.
Aside the two issues above, MIUI is a great OS. Yes, you read that well, MIUI isn’t just a User Interface (UI) but an Operating System (OS), and when combined with Google’s fastest OS till-date (the Android 10), the result is a smooth and buttery fluid User Experience (UX). Although the combination took out above 12GB ROM from the built in 64GB of storage.
I don’t really like the old ‘all apps on the home screen’ feature of MIUI, so after setting up the device, I instantly switch to the App drawer version of the interface. For what it worth, OS alone won’t amount to a smoother interface, the hardware department also has it role to play, thankfully, the Helio G80 CPU plays it game very well. And if there is any area I did not encounter any issue with the Redmi 9, is in the software department.
The notification drawer is kept very minimal, and a single click (inside phone setting), will switch you from normal to dark mode in seconds. Software connecting the peripherals of the phone are will optimized as well. The phone will guide you to set up the fast fingerprint scanner, the built-in speaker is loud enough for my Parlor. The camera components are connected fairly well, except for the LED flash talked above earlier.
How About Battery Performance?
One of the reason while the Redmi 9 is a bit weighty, is due to the built-in 5020mAh battery. After a whole 24 hours of pushing and pressing the Redmi 9, I had to, reluctantly, charge it remaining 30% juice this morning for charging sake, and not because I know the device might be going off anytime soon.
The Redmi 9 also come with great battery management app, which when turned on, gives you almost twice your battery run time, but to the detriment of background running apps, like emails, chat notifications etc.
Charging the device from 30% to 100% this morning took around 1H:37M. Kinda slow right? Well, perhaps, and that is because even though the Redmi 9 support 18W fast charger, a 10W charger is what you’ll get out of the box, and not the faster 18W charger.
Xiaomi Redmi 9 Pricing, Alternative and Conclusion
On the international front, the Redmi 9 starts at around $119 for the base model with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. But in local market, Nigeria for example, the device is available with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage and price at N66,000.
Phones with similar specs you can get at this price includes: Infinix Note 7 Lite, Samsung Galaxy M11, Tecno Camon 15, Huawei Y7p and the OPPO A31 smartphone.
When I got the Redmi 9, I wasn’t expecting the device to tick all spec box, knowing fully well that it a mid-range offer, but it did, sort of. Seriously, it interesting to see how much specs and features Xiaomi has pack into the Redmi 9, and despite the little hitches we noticed in the camera department and the less-bright LCD screen, the Redmi 9 is still a big bang for the buck, offering Mediatek Helio G80 under $120 dollars.

World Sea Turtle Day
“Chinese, Hindu, Native American… Across mythologies, turtles were seen as carrying the entire planet Earth on their backs. The belief probably stemmed from their long-lasting lives, lending them the wise, ancient quality. Oldies But Goodies
Summer solstice, ice cream, and, not to forget, cats — a lot of big and small things have inspired creatives to design a June wallpaper in all those years we’ve been running our monthly series. Below you’ll find a little best-of from the archives. (Please note that these designs don’t come with a calendar.)
Summer Is Coming
“Imagine a sunny beach and an endless blue sea. Imagine yourself right there. Is it somewhere in Greece? The Mediterranean? North Africa? Now turn around and start wandering through those picturesque, narrow streets. See all those authentic white houses with blue doors and blue windows? Feel the fragrance of fresh flowers? Stop for a second. Take a deep breath. Seize the moment. Breathe in. Breathe out. Now slowly open your eyes. Not quite there yet? Don’t worry. You will be soon! Summer is coming…” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Serbia.

Explore Your Inner Artist (June 2020 Wallpapers Edition)
Do you need a little inspiration boost? Well, then our new wallpapers collection is for you. Designed with love by the community for the community, the wallpapers are available with and without a calendar for June 2020.
There’s an artist in everyone. Some bring their creative ideas to life with digital tools, others capture the perfect moment with a camera or love to grab pen and paper to create little doodles or pieces of lettering. And even if you think you’re far away from being an artist, well, it might just be buried somewhere deep inside of you. So why not explore it?
Since more than nine years already, our monthly wallpapers challenge is the perfect opportunity to do just that: to challenge your creative skills and break out of your routine of meeting deadlines and client expectations for a moment to do something just for fun. Just like you got out your crayons when you were a kid, ending up fully immersed in the creative process.
For this post, artists and designers from across the globe once again took on the challenge and created beautiful and unique wallpapers that are bound to cater for some good vibes on your screens. All of them are available in versions with and without a calendar for June 2020 and can be downloaded for free. And because there can never be too much eye candy, we also added some wallpaper goodies from our archives at the end of this post. A big thank-you to everyone who shared their designs with us — this post wouldn’t exist without you. Enjoy!

World Sea Turtle Day
“Chinese, Hindu, Native American… Across mythologies, turtles were seen as carrying the entire planet Earth on their backs. The belief probably stemmed from their long-lasting lives, lending them the wise, ancient quality. On June 16, we celebrate the World Sea Turtle Day when we recognize the importance of these 110 million-year-old creatures, who were even contemporaries to dinosaurs. As little as cleaning up and recycling can do marvels to help preserve these beautiful and exotic creatures.” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Serbia.

Urban Yogic Life
“The month shares a vital significance as the International Yoga Day falls on June 21st. The beautiful design depicted brings into limelight the value and aura of the expression. Since we are in a hub of restlessness — an edgy world that longs for a mere breathing moment, it is quite essential to portray and henceforth bring back this art form from the pages of the past. Being a lifestyle choice and a way of exploring oneself, one could say yoga is simply synonymous with tranquility and sound breathing. It is a perspiring practice that evokes inner bliss and nudges us to see the world through a different lens. Hence the image is a collaboration of lifestyle and yoga — the urban yoga — a necessity, much more than just a way.” — Designed by Sweans from India.

Enjoy!
All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
We respect and carefully consider the ideas and motivation behind each and every artist’s work. This is why we give all artists the full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. This is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us but rather designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Ready to take on the challenge?
The next wallpapers post is already in the making, and, well, we’d be happy to feature your artwork in it, too. So if you have an idea for a July wallpaper, please don’t hesitate to submit it. We’d love to see what you’ll come up with. Join in! →

The Call Of Koel
“The peak of summer is upon us, and June brings scorching heat to most places in India. Summer season in my state also reminds me of the bird songs, especially the Koel bird. Canon EOS M50: What you need to know
Canon ESO M50: What you need to know
The Canon EOS M50 is the brand's beefier entry-level mirrorless camera, slated above the comparatively compact EOS M100. Both sport APS-C sensors and single control dials, but the M50 provides a 2.36M-dot EVF, hotshoe and more substantial grip (similar to the EOS M5). An articulating touchscreen adorns the back and Canon's stellar Dual Pixel autofocus is available when shooting stills and video (in most settings... more on that later).
We've had time to develop some first impressions of the camera. What follows is a distillation of the keys takeaways – everything you need to know about the Canon EOS M50.
Same 24MP APS-C sensor, new Digic 8 processor
It uses the same 24MP sensor as many of its siblings including fellow M-mount cameras like the M5, M6 and M100 as well as SLRs like the EOS 80D. But it makes use of the new Digic 8 processor, giving it a few advantages over other Canon interchangeable lens cameras.
A faster burst speed is one of them: with autofocus the M50 can shoot at 7.4 fps (10 fps with focus locked). That's a big jump from the M100's 4 fps burst with autofocus, and even faster than the 80D's 7 fps burst rate with AF. The one caveat is that the buffer is limited to about one second.
Another major advantage the new Digic 8 chip provides is the ability to shoot Ultra High Definition Video, making it the first Canon mirrorless camera to do so. But...
It shoots 4K but...
...don't throw the confetti just yet, because the implementation of 4K leaves much to be desired, due to several limitations.
The most notable limitation is that you can't use Canon's excellent Dual Pixel autofocus when shooting 4K, which is a real shame. We love Dual Pixel AF for its ability to stick to a subject without hunting, even if the subject moves. With the M50, there's still an option to use autofocus in 4K, but it's Contrast Detect, so will need to 'hunt' and is more prone to some wobbles.
The other big limitation is a 1.6x crop when shooting UHD video – that's on top of the sensor's 1.6x APS-C crop. Thus, a 22mm F2 becomes the equivalent field of view to a 56mm lens. Hardly ideal.
But it's not all caveats and bad news on the video front: the EOS M50 can shoot 1080/60p and 720/120p high frame rate capture with Dual Pixel AF. And there's no pesky additional crop (unless you use digital stabilization).
New CR3 Raw format with a better compression setting
The M50 is the first Canon camera to offer the latest CR3 Raw format, another product of the new Digic 8 processor. Why introduce it in an entry-level camera? Because it includes a new and improved compression option that might appeal to users wishing to dip their toes in shooting Raw, but don't want the large file sizes that come with it.
With the old CR2 Raw files, if you want to save memory card/hard-drive space, there is an option for downsized 'small' and 'medium' Raw files that are lower resolution than an ordinary CR2 file. With CR3 there is a new compression option called C Raw: a compressed, full-resolution Raw file that can be as small as half the size of a full CR3 file. And, if Canon has been sensible about it, it should offer effectively the same quality.
Increased Dual Pixel AF point coverage, Eye detect mode
There's a couple of improvements in the autofocus department of the M50: there are now 99 selectable points to choose from, up from 49 on previous M cameras. Point coverage is still 80% x 80% when using most M-series lenses, users just now have more point precision.
That said, with some lenses – specifically the 18-150mm, 28mm macro and 55-200mm – that coverage jumps to 88% x 100% with 143 points selectable. Canon representatives gave us no concrete reason for why some, but not all, lenses offer expanded coverage. However, we're hopeful any newly-introduced M-glass will offer the updated spread.
The M50 also introduces a new 'Eye Detection' AF option. We're huge fans of Sony's Eye AF feature, with its impressive ability to track the eye of a moving subject. Sadly, Canon's implementation seems less useful as it only works in AF-S – better hope your subject remains still.
Better wireless connectivity
This is not the first Canon ILC to offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, but it is the first to feature a 'send to smartphone after each shot' function. We had a little bit of time to play around with this new feature during a demonstration of the camera and found it to work well, once paired. And like other entry-level Canon ILCs, the M50 has a dedicated Wi-Fi button (visible above).
Articulating touchscreen, high-res OLD EVF
A 1.04M-dot touchscreen can be fully articulated for selfies/vlogging and flipped inward against the body to protect it from damage – the back of has a lovely faux leather texture.
There aren't a whole lot of control points on the camera but the touchscreen somewhat makes up for it: you can use it to change quite a few settings, access the Q menu and move your AF point, all with a tap of the finger. Plus, Canon's touch implementation is excellent on the whole: the screen is responsive and common gesture controls like swiping between images are recognized.
The 2.36M dot OLED EVF is lovely to look through and on par with the best you can get at this price point.
Mediocre battery life
Battery life isn't stellar: at 235 shots per charge (CIPA rated), you'd be wise to carry a spare battery (though if you switch it into 'Eco mode,' battery life jumps to 370 shots). As always, you'll often get more shots than the number given in the rating but it does give a good impression of longevity, and 235 shots isn't great.
The M50 uses the same LP-E12 as the M100: a second one will cost you about $50 (on brand). Fortunately if you do pick up a second, the M50 ships with an external charger, so you can top it off while you're out shooting. There is no in-body charging.
Ports, hotshoe and pop-up flash
In terms of wired connectivity, the M50 offers a 3.5mm microphone socket: a real rarity in entry-level products. There's also a Micro-HDMI and Micro-USB port, though again, the latter does not support charging.
We like the M100's pop-up flash because you can use your finger to direct it to bounce off the ceiling – with the M50, you can only fire the flash directly at your subject. However, unlike the M100, the M50 offers a hotshoe for use with an accessory flash.
More buttons than the M100, plus Canon's Guide Modes and a new silent mode
We already mentioned that the M50 doesn't have a lot of buttons, but it does have more control points than the smaller, more affordable M100, despite also being fairly point-and-shoot in nature. These additional controls/buttons include: an AE lock button, AF frame selector button, mode dial and custom function button.
And like the Canon SL2 and T7i, the M50 offers Canon's helpful Guide Modes. These were omitted on the M100 and we're glad to see them make their way into an entry-level Canon mirrorless product.
The M50 also gains a new silent scene mode, which sounds useful for a variety of scenarios like photographing sleeping babies or a documenting a school play. You won't be able to control exposure settings when using it – such is the case for all 'scene modes' – but it's a nice beginner-friendly feature.
What do you think?
There you have it, the EOS M50: the first Canon mirrorless camera with 4K and the new auto send-to-smartphone feature. It's also the first Canon camera to use the new Digic 8 processor which brings about the updated CR3 Raw format. And to top things off, it has expanded Dual Pixel AF coverage (with some lenses). That's a lot of 'new' to pack into an entry-level product.
So what do you think? Is the EOS M50 a sign that Canon is taking mirrorless seriously, or are you upset about the 4K limitations? And for those impressed, would you still buy the M50 despite the limited lens family (7 M-series lenses as of writing), especially when compared to that of Fujifilm X-mount or the Micro Four Thirds system? Let us know all of your thoughts, good bad and weird, in the comments below.

The best projectors 2018: 10 projectors to consider for your home cinema
Best Projector Buying Guide: Welcome to TechRadar’s guide to the best home cinema projectors – featuring both 4K and HD models.
If you want your home entertainment super-sized – and trust us, you do – you’re going to need a great projector. Whether you want to splash Blu-ray movies across a large white wall, magnify your gaming experience, or want to throw photographs or slides from a mobile device onto a 100-inch plus screen, a home cinema projector should be your first choice of display.
To help bring the big-screen home we’ve tested some of the top models of home cinema projector. They range from budget-oriented HD beamers right up to cinema-grade 4K Ultra HD models; the surprisingly affordable to reassuringly expensive. The days of fuzzy old school projectors are thankfully long gone.
With HD now ubiquitous, you can get great results from 1080p source material. And as more Ultra HD content becomes available from media streamers like the new Amazon Fire TV and the Nvidia Shield, as well as the upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray revolution, the future’s looking great.
Looking for something a little more … affordable? Don’t miss our guide to the best projector deals that gets updated each and every month!
1. Sony VPL-VW300ES
“This 4K SXRD projector just refuses to put a foot wrong.”
Projection system: SXRD | Resolutions: 4096 x 2160 | Brightness: 1,500 lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI 2.0 (1x HDCP 2.2), 1x S-Video, 1x VGA | Dimensions: 496 x 195 x 464mm
Fast response times
Excellent upscaling
Very high price
Huge
For that proper cinematic feel it’s hard to beat a big screen projector, especially one that’s capable of filling a wall with 4K images.
First, there’s great colour and black levels, whatever the ambient light levels. Secondly, awesome Reality Creation tech that brings out Maximum detail from native 4K sources, Blu-ray and even DVD. Thirdly, the exemplary Bright Cinema and Cinema Film 1 & 2 presets and, finally, the hugely flexible optical zoom/lens shift options that make set-up a cinch.
If you’ve got the money, the space and the 4K source, the VPL-VW300ES is a shoe-in to become the centrepiece of your next home cinema.

2. Optoma HD39Darbee Special Edition
“An all-round crowd-pleaser”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 3,500 lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI (1x MHL) | Dimensions: 314 x 224 x 114mm
Console-friendly low input lag
Razor-sharp DLP images
Black level is inevitably limited
Can be a bit noisy
Even in the company of excellent competition, the Optoma HD39Darbee is a high-value crowd-pleaser. It’s not always possible to satisfy movie fans and gamers, but this model scores more than it misses. It’s an effective gaming display, does a fine job with films and is bright enough to make your next sporting event a real social occasion.
That said, the Darbee technology can be a bit polarizing. In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Darbee processing applies variable picture enhancements to create a snappier image: It bumps brightness , adds extra edge emphasis for more detailed images and pumps up colors. It’s the equivalent of a sugar rush for your favorite films and TV shows.
We don’t mind admitting it leaves us a little conflicted. Sometimes we like it, other times we don’t, it rather depends what we’re watching. Cartoony games and anime all benefit from higher color saturation, dramas on Blu-ray less so.
Still, if you like eye candy, it’s definitely worth having on board.

3. BenQ W1070+
“Full HD images that impress even in ambient light make BenQ’s latest a bargain beamer for all seasons.”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 2,200 lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI (1x MHL), 1x RCA, 1x Component, 1x VGA | Dimensions: 312 x 104 x 244mm
Clean, detailed Full HD
Bright enough for daylight
Judder
Lacks convenient lens shift
There was a time when a decent home cinema-grade projection system would have cost well north of £1,000, and take-up a considerable amount of space too.
Edging ever closer to the plummeting price of a decent flatscreen TV, the BenQ W1070+ DLP projector offers enough brightness to be used in daylight as well as the all-important Full HD resolution.
If you’re wondering whether to take the plunge and make a projector your go-to display for films and games, the W1070+ is a certainly bold and bright enough – and easily one of the best value entry-level projectors around.

4. Optoma UHD60
“Rewriting the 4K HDR projector rule book.”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 4096 x 2160 | Brightness: 1,800 lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI | Dimensions: 495.6 x 195.3 x 463.6 mm
Incredible price for 4K
Sharp, bright pictures
Surprisingly effective HDR mode
Slightly high input lag
They may have taken their own sweet time getting here, but 4K projectors using DLP technology are finally starting to arrive. Colours, in particular, look much more vibrant and rich in saturation, immediately making the image look more solid, three dimensional and natural, as well as more flat-out beautiful. Plus, while it’s becoming easier almost daily to find native 4K content to feed the UHD60, if you do find yourself having to revert to HD Blu-ray on occasion again the UHD60’s got your back. Its HD to 4K upscaling, for starters, is pretty much exemplary, adding plenty of detail and crispness without excessively exaggerating noise or introducing overt colour errors.

5. LG PH450UG Minibeam Projector
“LG’s minibeam projector is a great way to bring big screen entertainment to smaller spaces.”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1280 x 720 | Brightness: 450 lumens | Video inputs: 1x HDMI (MHL) | Dimensions: 5.2 x 3.2 x 7.9 inches
Form factor is a winner
Runs cool and quiet
720p resolution
Limited motion resolution
If you want big screen home entertainment but don’t have the space, or funds for a large flatpanel TV or home cinema projector, then LG’s DLP LED Minibeam PH450UG Ultra Short Throw (UST) could be the answer.
It needs only a dozen centimetres or so to cast a huge image onto a white wall or screen and, even better, it’s also ridiculously compact and relatively affordable at $650 (£529, around AU$864).
There is a catch of course: The PH450UG has a resolution of just 720p. If you need more, LG has the PF1000U, a slightly larger 1080p UST model, that sells for $1,399 (£999). There are other projectors in this price range capable of 1080p – like the class-leading BenQ HT670 – but if you’re committed to the small form factor, the PH450UG is the way to go.
Read the full review: LG PH450UG Minibeam Projector
6. Epson EH-LS10000
“4K Enhancement, a mathematical fudge or remarkable innovation? Definitely the latter.”
Projection system: 3LCD laser | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 1,500 lumens | Video inputs: 1x HDMI 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2), 1x Composite, 1x Component, 1x VGA | Dimensions: 550 x 225 x 553mm
Eye-popping colour
Convincing black levels
Huge physical size
High price tag
The Epson EH-LS10000 is an excellent home cinema projector. Blistering black levels, great colours, a huge amount of convenience features and some nifty frame interpolation help produce some of the most fluid, colourful and realistic Full HD images from any projector out there.
However, there’s no getting away from the fact that even with the awesome power of Epson’s 4K Enhancement feature – which really does work – the native 4K trickery of the Sony VPL-VW300ES, available for exactly the same price, means that the slightly less detailed Epson EH-LS10000 must take a back seat, at least for now.
Read the full review: Epson EH-LS10000
7. Optoma HD142X
Optoma’s HD142X from 2016 is a solid runner-up
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 3,000 lumens | Video inputs: 1x HDMI 1.4a, 1x S-Video, 2x VGA, 1x Composite, 1x DVI-D | Dimensions: 386 x 162 x 280mm
Full 1080p image quality
23,000:1 contrast ratio
Only two HDMI ports
For those who think that home cinema is an occasional luxury that is just not affordable or practical, the ultra-affordable HD142X is serious food for thought.
Despite its lean price tag, it has a full 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, 23,000:1 high contrast ratio and built-in 10-watt speakers. It even supports 3D video to boot.
Optoma says that the lamp life for the HD142X is somewhere in the ballpark of 8,000 hours – and claims that it would last around 10 years if you watched a two-hour movie every single day. Input-wise the HD141X offers 2 x HDMI (1.4a 3D support) + MHL v1.2, perfect for hooking up a PS4 or 3D Blu-ray player.
Read the full review: Optoma HD142X
8. BenQ TH670
This is the best cheap projector we could find.
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 2,000 lumens | Video inputs: Composite Video In x 1, Component Video In x 1, HDMI x 3 | Dimensions: 380.5 x 121.7 x 277 mm‎
1080p resolution
10-watt speaker
Not a ton of input lag
Contrast ratio could be better
We’re pretty big fans of the affordable BenQ TH670. It might not be the top of the line from the highly lauded projector manufacturer, but it strikes the perfect balance of price to performance to be worth an audition in your living room.
The TH670 has a Full 1080p (1920×1080) resolution, 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, 10,000:1 high contrast ratio and built-in speakers. Those speakers could be a hair bit more powerful, but for the price it’s hard to complain too much. The projector is capable of images spanning from 60 to 120 inches across and its lamp is rated for 4,000 – 10,000 hours depending on which modes you primarily use. Input-wise it offers Computer in (D-sub 15pin) x 2 (Share with component), Composite Video in (RCA) x 1 and HDMI. Win!
9. Optoma HD27
“Midway though the Movie of the Week, you’ll struggle to remember that the HD27 is a cut-price beamer.”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 3,200 lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI (1x MHL) | Dimensions: 315 x 114 x 224mm
Excellent Full HD performance
Vibrant colour fidelity
Doesn’t do a deep black
Awful onboard audio system
Midway though the Movie of the Week, you’ll struggle to remember that the HD27 is a cut-price beamer – its images have genuine cinematic appeal. It’s also tremendous as a gaming display: Hook up a PS4 or Xbox One, find a big white wall large and giant screen theatrics can be yours.
While you can get better performing projectors, you’ll pay significantly more and will probably struggle to match the convenient form factor. The HD27 may not represent the leading edge of tech, but it is at the cutting-edge of fun.
Read the full review: Optoma HD27
10. Acer H5380BD
“Bringing up the rear is Acer’s entry-level H5380BD”
Projection system: DLP | Resolutions: 1920 x 1080 | Brightness: 3,200 ANSI Lumens | Video inputs: 2x HDMI 1.4, 1x Composite, 1x RGB input, 1x Video out | Dimensions: 362 x 109 x 231mm
17,000:1 contrast ratio
3,000 lumens of brightness
1280 x 720 native resolution
2-watt speakers
At one time, Acer’s H5380BD was king of the world with its 1280 x 720 resolution and 2-watt speakers. But now there’s a new king in town rocking 10-watts of audio prowess and Full HD. That doesn’t mean you need to relegate Acer’s entry-level home theater projector to the dustbin, however, it’s still plenty capable for most folks looking for something cheap.
The H5380BD has a 720p (1280 x 720) resolution and puts out 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness. It has a 17,000:1 contrast ratio, and 2-watt speakers. That said, the projector is capable of images spanning from 300 inches across and its lamp is rated for 4,000 – 10,000 hours depending on which modes you primarily use. Input-wise it offers HDMI, Composite Video, S-Video and two VGA ports.

Blackmagic Web Presenter, ATEM Switcher, and Hyperdeck Studio Mini Review
One little box can make a world of difference. Add two more small boxes from Blackmagic and one can turn any live streaming video event into a professional tv production usually reserved for much more expensive budgets. Will we soon see the days where facebook live and live video streaming overtake live TV broadcast to living rooms nationwide? With the Blackmagic Web Presenter, Hyperdeck Studio Mini, and ATEM Television Studio HD one can have live TV broadcast quality when web streaming video right now. As for the take-over of Live Broadcast TV… that we will have to wait and see.
(L to R) Web Presenter, Hyperdeck Studio Mini, and ATEM HD Switcher
Blackmagic’s Web Presenter
This one little box has the potential to have a big impact. This box can replace a computer’s built-in web camera with any SDI or HDMI camera or video source. The Web Presenter converts professional cameras into web cameras for Skype, Facebook Live, Youtube Live, Periscope, Twitch, and Wirecast meaning a user is no longer beholden to a crummy laptop built-in camera and blah picture quality. This was the number one item I wanted to test outside of cameras from Blackmagic Design. I used it for Facebook Lives, Youtube Live, and a fantastic Skype interview presentation with The Nashville Filmmaker’s Guild and Jacques Haitkin the 2nd Unit DOP for Kong: Skull Island.
If everyone expects online video to suck then it is time to stand out from the crowd. The Web Presenter is one tool a cinematographer / DOP, Director, Editor or Producer could use to elevate their online interviews. So often now productions and companies will interview prospective hires via Skype. I see the Web Presenter as one way to show off a shooter’s skill level and professionalism. If you are looking to be hired for you technical skill as well as your artistic style and taste then it might be wise to have the best-looking video no matter the medium.
This feature was a big one for me. For me, the little cost of around $500 for a Web Presenter seems like a fantastic return on investment if you are constantly talking to producers online and using Skype as your main avenue to talk to future clients or employers. It just seems smart. The bonus is you do not need to use any of the free broadcasting software needed for Facebook Live and Youtube. All you need is a camera, the Web Presenter, and a computer with internet access.
Blackmagic has a good example of how to change from web camera to web presenter for skype
Broadcasters
Matching an on-air broadcast to a Facebook Live can be a little challenging. Broadcasters’ have a few options like Wirecast where they can use a router to patch in different sources, like on-air content, to Facebook and Youtube. The Web Presenter is a great add-on to this system or an added stand-alone streaming box. The Web Presenter offers up tools allowing broadcasters the ability to keep their quality control online to the standard usually reserved for over the air broadcasts.
I used the Web Presenter quite a bit once it arrived. I found the actual web presenter converter box to be the easiest rung in the ladder to high-quality live streaming video. I had far more problems fumbling through the free software needed to post to facebook live videos. I tried both Open Broadcaster and XSplit Broadcaster. I settled on Open Broadcaster because I found it simpler to set-up and to show others how to set it up.
Now, I am not a live television director and nor have I ever been one either. Yet, after a little bit of a learning curve, I was able to drop in graphics, capture clean audio, and stream onto Facebook. In the initial firmware, the Web Presenter had a touch of a flat picture profile and the audio had a little bit of the under-the-water sound to it. Was this the Web Presenter or the software? I have no idea, but I do know Blackmagic updated the firmware to the Web Presenter to solve the audio problem among a few others. This updated included:
Add support for menus when using Teranex Mini Smart Panel.
Add transition menu to select cut, dissolve or dip transitions.
Add menu to control audio mixer to set gains on all input sources.
Settings are saved to flash memory and restored when powered on.
Fix intermittent bug with audio on the SDI program out when capturing from HDMI.
As for the flat picture? I used a filter setting in Open Broadcaster to create a more pleasing look as a quick solution. Usually, Blackmagic Design continues to add features and fixes to their product’s firmware. I expect Blackmagic will do this such updating to the Web Presenter especially considering it will be the last converter box before a live production goes online.
720P Only
Is this a problem? Why are we not able to stream 1080/2K/4K? Facebook only takes 720 at 30 frames per second at the moment. I feel like Blackmagic used Facebook’s specifications and through the free broadcasting software, they delivered it and not much more. If Facebook were to update their video streaming capability I would bet Blackmagic, along with other manufacturers, would upgrade their products to match. Until now, I do not mind a 720p only resolution. I’ll take a decent clean video signal that does not drop out over not streaming any day.
Scaling Up
The only problem with the Web Presenter is the two inputs: SDI or HDMI. You can switch between the too, but that’s really it. For bigger live productions Blackmagic also released tools to scale up your live streaming video. Also, it was only recently that Blackmagic enabled the buttons on the front of the Web Presenter to actually work. If you were an early adopter I think it may be wise to update the firmware and gain access to the front panel features.
The HyperDeck Mini
With this converter box, online video producers can now add video playback to their Facebook Live or Youtube Live videos. SD Cards. Got to love the simplicity of SD Cards for playback. The video professionals like myself have a ton of SD Cards. I could be because I have a 4K Video Assist and tend to hoard fast SD Cards for that monitor/recorder. I gave this box a try and found it works as stated. Could I deep dive into it? No my wife and I had a baby the week after Blackmagic Design sent me a review unit. Needless to say, my time became a little more limited.  The same is true for the ATEM Television Studio HD. I could test it worked well and that was about it. Now, that my child is close to 2 months old I am just now getting my head above water. Back to the Hyperdeck Studio Mini.
Think of the HyperDeck Studio Mini as a miniaturized broadcast deck that is small and portable. Users get a small deck that records and plays back broadcast quality 10-bit video such as Apple ProRes files on SD and UHS-II cards. For formats up to 2160 30p, the HyperDeck Studio Mini has a 6G SDI connection, an HDMI 2.0 for monitoring, dual SD card slots for non-stop recording and a reference output with built in sync generator allowing you to daisy chain and synchronize multiple decks.
ATEM Television Studio HD
This is the heart of multi-camera live streaming. With the ATEM Television Studio HD, you can build out a professional live studio. I could see many vloggers or companies wanting to have a multi-cam facebook live streaming turn to the ATEM Television Studio HD. Using this group of gear even opened up the idea of streaming my “Art of the Shot” interview series to the web when I talk to a cinematographer in person.
The ATEM Television Studio HD includes 4 SDI and 4 HDMI inputs allowing you to connect up to 8 1080 60p sources. The ATEM Television Studio HD has re-sync on all inputs so you always get clean switching whether you’re using professional or consumer cameras. Users will get a multiview output so they can see all of the sources, preview, and program on a single screen, aux out, built-in talkback, 2 still stores, an audio mixer, and camera control unit. Seriously, this little box holds nearly all one may need for any remote live production.
The Free Software
This where the learning curve started for me. You kind of get what you pay for here I think. Are the programs like Open Broadcaster or XSplit Broadcaster easy to use? Once you figure it out, yes. It just took me quite a bit of tooling around to figure it out. Of course, I am not a live show director and that could have added to my learning curve.

Andrew Townsend Responds to #AskMeMonday Discussing Video Sizes
One of the questions I get asked a lot is about the difference between 720 and 1080 in regards to exporting options. This is tied with the canvas size of your project and the size of your assets. Below I’ll outline some of that information for you.
When you record video, whether from a camera or from your desktop using screen capture software, you record it at a certain size. This may be 100 pixels by 100 pixels (a square), or 800 pixels by 600 pixels (more of a rectangle), or any other combination of sizes. If you are going to record in standard video shapes (or aspect ratios) you’ll record in 16 by 9. This is not 16 pixels by 9 pixels, that would be tiny. But you’ll record in that ratio.
That is where the video sizes 720p and 1080p come into play.
If you measure up the side of your video 720 pixels high, then you’ll come out 1280 pixels wide when using the standard 16:9 ratio. That’s about 921,600 dots being displayed in your video. This is the minimum for being considered “high definition” or HD.
The larger standard of size is 1080 pixels high, and 1920 pixels wide. This gets you over 2 million pixels being displayed 24 times (or more) per second. This is also considered HD, but a much higher quality.
You would be wise to pick which of these standards you are going to use very early in your production planning. Why pick early? Because if you record your video at 720 by 1280 (also know as 720p) but you want to export your video as the larger 1080 size, then you’re going to have 1,152,000 pixels that the computer is making up in order to expand to the larger size, and it will reduce the clarity of your video.
Here is an example. Below I have a video that I have shot with the opposite problem. I shot this video at 1080 pixels up the side, but my project settings (or canvas) are set to only 720 pixels up the side.
You can see that the video bleeds off the side quite a bit. Now, I can resize the video down, and it won’t cause any problems because we’re just compressing the pixels. The information for each available square is actually there. I can still produce a high quality 720 video with this footage. This is one great reason why you may as well just record all of your video at 1080, just to be prepared.
But what if I want my 1080 video to be produced at 1080, but I am seeing it is being cropped, as viewed above? This is an easy fix in Camtasia.
First, select the sizing menu and scroll down to Project Settings.
This brings up a menu that allows you to make general project wide changes such as the size of your video and the color of unfilled space.
Select the Canvas Dimensions drop down menu and you’ll see all the of the presets, organized by standards. It is here you can select from your two HD options, 1080, and 720.
One other aspect of this that comes up repeatedly is whether our Camtasia templates come in 1080 or 720. The answer is yes to both. Our templates are made in vector graphics. This means that if you add one of our templates that is sized for 720, like the Sharp template for example, you can resize it to 1080 with absolutely perfect quality.
I’ll demonstrate. Below is the Sharp lower third graphic over the video at 720p.
You can see this is a nice crisp 720p graphic. But my video is 1080, so I’ll expand my canvas, and then resize the lower thirds graphic. With a video, it would become blurry and less defined. But since it is a vector graphic, it looks just as crisp and clean.
So I hope this answers your questions about aspect ratios and canvas size. Let me know if you have more questions, and as always, I’d love to see your projects that use the eLearning Brothers Camtasia templates!

The best cheap projector deals and February sales 2018
It’s not hard to find great projector deals in 2017 … if you know where to look.
Admittedly, some of us have a strange fear of projectors. That they’re some unknowable quantity that only AV students and master electricians can understand. But trust us, they’re not. Projectors are just as easy to set up as a new flatscreen and, guess what, they usually have a larger max screen size, too.
Why go for a projector instead of a big screen? Well, the benefits of a projector include a more cinematic experience in your home with a massive image, great resolution and cost, often they’re less than the 65 or 75-inch screen you had in mind. There are some downsides here, too, including caring for a lamp and some input delay in some cases, but the pros far outweigh the cons.
But you knew all that already, right? That’s why you’re here looking for a the best cheap projector and not, I don’t know, perusing cheap TVs. Good for you.
So what makes a good deal on projectors?
Look we’re not going to tell you how you should spend your money. That’s not our style. But, what we will say, is that the best projectors are almost always Full HD and come with built-in speakers. If you get both those features and aren’t looking to break the bank, don’t spend more than $650 or £500. You can do better for less.
That being said, we’ve found a few great deals this month that we wanted to bring to your attention – hopefully ending your long hunt for the perfect addition to your home theater setup.
1. BenQ TH670
This is the best cheap projector we could find
1080p resolution
10-watt speaker
Not a ton of input lag
Contrast ratio could be better
You can probably stop reading right here. This is the best cheap projector you’re going to find. Sure, the BenQ TH670 might be a bit more than you were looking to spend, but it’s almost impossible to find a better projector in terms of quality versus price. Win!
2. Optoma HD142X
Optoma’s HD142X from 2016 is a solid runner-up
Full 1080p image quality
23,000:1 contrast ratio
Not the best picture
Only two HDMI ports
In a very solid second place is Optoma’s excellent HD142X projector. It has a full 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, 23,000:1 high contrast ratio and built-in 10-watt speakers.
3. BenQ W1070
Another BenQ projector? You better believe it
Full 1080p image quality
Day and night viewing modes
10,000:1 contrast ratio
Fan can get loud
Yes, we’re really including two BenQ projectors on this list. While the TH670 is still king of the proverbial projector castle, the W1070 isn’t a bad third choice. We say that because it makes a fair amount of trade-offs. Yes, you’re still getting the awesome 1080p resolution, but you’re also getting the poor 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Worse, though, you’re losing a bit of light output (the W1070 only outputs 2,000 ANSI lumens). At least there’s still plenty of inputs should you need them – 2 x HDMI, component and VGA inputs are all here. That being said, if a good deal pops up on one of these, this shouldn’t be overlooked.
4. Acer H5380BD
In last place is Acer’s entry-level H5380BD
17,000:1 contrast ratio
3,000 lumens of brightness
1280 x 720 native resolution
2-watt speakers
At one time, Acer’s H5380BD was king of the world with its 1280 x 720 resolution and 2-watt speakers. But now there’s a new king in town rocking 10-watts of audio prowess and Full HD. That doesn’t mean you need to relegate Acer’s entry-level home theater projector to the dustbin, however, it’s still plenty capable for most folks looking for something cheap. So where did it go wrong? The H5380BD only has a 720p (1280 x 720) resolution, but at least puts out 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness. It has a 17,000:1 contrast ratio, but only 3-watt built-in speakers. That said, the projector is capable of images spanning from 300 inches across and its lamp is rated for 4,000 – 10,000 hours depending on which modes you primarily use. Input-wise it offers HDMI, Composite Video, S-Video and two VGA ports.
5. Optoma UHD60 4K Projector
Rewriting the 4K HDR projector rule book
It’s a 4K Projector!
Sharp, bright pictures
Limited HDR effect
Slightly high input lag
They may have taken their own sweet time getting here, but 4K projectors using DLP technology are finally starting to arrive. The first of these affordable UHD beasts is the Optoma UHD60, a 4K HDR projector that has all the benefits of a standard DLP projector, plus a few of the perks of a 4K flatscreen. The UHD60 is a prime contender for AV bargain of the year, delivering genuine 4K and HDR thrills at a price that instantly leaves many of its rivals with some serious explaining to do.
