Hey hey I hope you don't mind discussing the other Largo brother, but do you think Luigi would ever fall in love with someone too? If so, do you think he'd try to change his behavior?
OOH I definitely dont mind talkin Luigi (or anything Repo! for that matter; y’all know where my loyalty lies but I’m super super up for discussing anyone and everyone else)
Honestly… I think Luigi is at the very least more likely to find someone and fall in love and and “settle down” than Pavi, I will say that with certainty. This is largely because I think that while both brothers have an absolute mountain of trauma and are coping with it via the absolute worst ways imaginable, I think Luigi’s a slightly more sympathetic character than Pavi, and one whose actions are significantly less intentional or calculated than Pavi, whose ego is so through the roof and concept of healthy relationships is shattered into so many pieces that I don’t know if he would ever be able to truly fall in love with anyone.
I think Luigi is more sensitive and has way, way, way more trouble hiding his emotions. Pavi is deceptively good at masking (hah!) his feelings. He hides any imperfection or flaw behind a giddy smile and cheery words and he seems to have very, very little empathy of any kind for anyone, even seemingly enjoying watching Nathan tear apart the repossession victim in Night Surgeon, unlike Luigi who seems to wince in genuine disgust. Luigi, for all the killing he does, seems to always do it in a fit of blind rage, and if you pay attention in the scene when he stabs the coffee guy a bunch of times, when Mag calls out “Luigi stop it!” he looks up at her like he’s really surprised in a way that I almost read as like, he didn’t even fucking realize what he was doing. Of course, that isn’t to say it’s an excuse for reckless murder LOL, but I think his killing, born of his lack of an ability to control his temper, is done with way different intention than Pavi, who is very very calculated in what he does. Pavi is a scary character because he does not kill blindly; you know he has to be calculated and thoughtful in his actions because he does what he does for aesthetic value. He has to pick out a victim, take them somewhere secluded, seduce them, murder them, very very carefully remove their face… It’s a process, it’s not an immediate “I’m really upset so I’m going to stab the first thing that gets in my way” reaction.
And that’s not the only time Luigi can’t hide or control his emotion. Bill Moseley and Ogre have both said with certainty numerous times that Luigi and Pavi really love their dad, but I think the final scene of the film is really indicative of how the two of them actually outwardly express emotion at a “lowest point,” because while Pavi is being a freak and trying to touch his sister’s face Luigi just straight up breaks down in tears over his dad (and I saw someone say once that they thought he was acting but… I really really really don’t think he is lol, with Bill Moseley’s affirmation that Luigi genuinely cares about Rotti and the fact that a huge amount of his characterization boils down to “can’t control his temper,” I would argue he definitely wouldn’t be able to control his emotion after seeing his father not only die in front of him but angrily disown him as he did).
I think Luigi has a real sense of like… wanting to be responsible. I think he’s in more of a “Well Don, Son!” Guy place with his relationship to Rotti than Pavi — Both Pavi and Luigi want their dad’s love and approval, and I’d say his treatment of them is a huge huge factor for both of their awful behavior and deteriorated mental health and all that, but Luigi is the one who actually has a sense of being responsible and doing something to receive his dad’s approval based on hard work and effort. I talked about this before here, but basically I think that we see a lot of evidence in the film that Luigi actually wants to prove himself a worthy heir for GeneCo, and he does so by, for example, actually doing what appears to be something company-related at the beginning of Mark It Up while Pavi dicks around with some of his dad’s employees, insisting that Rotti put him in charge, and then during his verse of the song he actually talks about how he’s (supposedly) smart and capable and thus the most deserving to take over GeneCo.
So like… I think that altogether Luigi actually is the smartest of the two brothers (I don’t know about Amber, she’s kind of an outlier and I think she’s honestly significantly more capable than both of them combined LOL) and is actually able to be somewhat thoughtful and even a hard-worker when given the opportunity. I think his biggest flaw is his inability to control his own emotions but at his core he is a very emotional person (unlike Pavi who has managed to bottle up everything to the point that I think he’s very much suppressed feeling lots of emotion at all, and has completely warped his perception of intimacy and love). So with those traits… I think Luigi is by far more likely than Pavi to find someone he loves and actually stay with them. I think he would be WAY more capable of loyalty than Pavi and I think he would actually want to try on some level, unlike Pavi who would either get bored or get lazy (or both). He still may be dangerous lol, you know he has a history of lashing out. And as for being able to change… at the age that he is and how long this has gone on completely accepted and no one has stopped him from doing what he’s doing or provided him any help etc, I don’t know how realistic Luigi changing his behavior is, but I do think, again, he’d be more likely to try than Pavi. I think Luigi does have a conscience whereas I think Pavi is very very sociopathic. I can see Luigi mellowing out a bit once Rotti dies, for example, because the extremity of his rage and stress would sort of die down into a more deep-rooted depression (not that he wouldn’t still have outbursts tho), whereas I think I see Pavi becoming increasingly more dangerous and caring less and less about social stigmas and taboos (if that’s possible) out of a desperation to run from his feelings.
So… I can’t give a completely certain yes or no, but I do see Luigi as significantly more likely to fall in love or even make attempts to grow or change than Pavi lol
