“Mami?”

“Tara, I really don't want to hear your excuses anymore.”

Tara sunk down in her seat, shoulders up to her ears in shame. Her rumpled clothing pressed uncomfortably around her skin, no doubt leaving behind the indent of the inseam of her clothing. She gave a small tug at her shirt collar and wrinkled her nose at the pungent vodka dried into the fabric.

She took a glance at her mamá and ducked her head to keep from catching her eyes. Her face was carefully set, her eyes staring at the empty chair across from them. Her silence was loud, Tara was uncomfortable.

“You just had to go out after I specifically told you not to. Do you know what something like that does to this family?”

Tara scoffed, anger rising. “What family?”

The squeak she let out was of fear when Mamá snapped her head to the side to glare daggers at her.

“Don't talk to your mother that way,” Mamá snapped. “You don't get to talk to me like that after all I've done for you.”

Tara felt a flare of pride, or maybe it was remaining liquid courage. Either way, she was unfiltered and wading towards the danger zone rapidly.

“You haven't done anything for me! Look at where we are! You think this is what you call good parenting?!”

Mamá's face grew red. Before she could yell some more or worse, hit Tara, the door opened and a man in sleek khaki dress pants, white button up shirt, and a loud green tie stepped into the room. He barely paid the two women any attention before sitting down at the empty chair.

“I've looked at your case,” the lawyer started slowly, and Tara and her mom shared a look. “The police want to charge you for driving under the influence. Now, from what I've seen evidence-wise, your fingerprints weren't on that tank of gas, so arson won't be added to your charges.”

Tara let out a sigh of relief.

“But that doesn't mean the other charge is going to drop.”

Mamá hummed. She twisted the ring on her thumb slowly, intimately. It was nauseating.

“What are our options?” Mamá asked sharply. Tara flinched despite herself.

He sighed. “If you plead not guilty, you'll end up serving time in the county jail before being moved to a state prison. CCTV footage shows you and your friend leaving that building intoxicated and you getting in the driver's seat. And the police didn't like a fellow policeman's daughter being involved with troubled youths; especially one who supposedly set fire to that same building. Luckily everyone inside was okay.”

Tara winced. No, that's… They've got it all wrong.

“The jury won't appreciate the raw evidence contradicting what you said. You're not guilty? They won't believe you,” he said. Leaning forward, he rested his chin on her folded hands. “I have another option.”

Mamá sighed. “Out with it, then, I don't have all day.”

Tara rolled her eyes. This was probably the first time she's been decently sober in years, she's probably having spasms.

“You plead guilty.”

Tara froze. Mamá froze. The lawyer stared cooly at the 2 women processing this information.

It should be funny but it's not. Innocent little Tara Carpenter arrested and charged with a DUI and probably arson, too, managing to escape the actual fire but not the police. Graduated top of her class as valedictorian, shoved down to the bottom to grovel for mercy.

She was no better than her.

Tara grit her teeth at the mere thought of her.

“I will not have a daughter with a criminal record!” Mamá stood suddenly in anger. Her chair screeched and clattered back to the floor. “She's 18, she can deal with it herself!”

Fear filled Tara's body. “No, Mamá, please don't leave!” She turned back to the blank lawyer and shook. “Tell - Tell me what would happen if I plead guilty. Please.”

He quirked his lip. “You take a hit to your record, of course, but it can be requested to be expunged later down the line should you take probation seriously.” He waited for Tara's hurried nod before continuing. “You will stay in county jail for 5 days before being let out on probation in compliance with California's laws.”

Tara looked at her mamá, but the woman stood where she was with her arms crossed and face hardened. Swallowing, the teenager turned back to the lawyer.

“A-and the laws are..?”

The lawyer tutted, eyed her with distaste. “18 and you don't know the laws of your state?” Tara fought back her scowl. This lawyer was the worst. “For the entirety of your probation, you will need to be near this city where the sentencing will take place. I assume you live close by?”

… Oh. Oh no. Mamá was going to kill her for real.

Mamá set her hands on the table. “No, I don't. But…” Tara jolted at the word, confusion growing. “I do have someone just thirty minutes north of here with decent traffic. She lives on a farm by herself, but I'm sure she'd be glad to help out.”

Tara shakily breathed while the older adults were speaking.

What was her mamá talking about? Since when did she know some strange farm woman nearly 3 hours away from Woodsboro? She hoped it wasn't another Tía Isabel who she was pretty sure wasn't actually related to her.

“There is one more condition.”

“What is it?” Tara warily asked.

The lawyer smiled.

I don't know if you're still doing the prompts thing (if you're not, then no pressure (😂)) but could you do one where over dinner Pepa and Bruno decide to tease Julieta by telling Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel all the naughty stuff she and Agustín got up to when they were young? (In the silly embarrassing way a sibling would)

Besties I’m back with the grounded julieta crack, except this time it’s just an aftermath/epilogue. Sorry it took so long to get around to this one but I had been saving it to be more than just a five sentence fic.

Grounded Julieta Part 1

After almost a week of meddling from her siblings, Julieta was glad to see her life return to normal, and was especially glad to return to working in the main kitchen, rather the one in her own room. She had been slightly annoyed, Pepa was true to her word and did in fact rearrange the kitchen in as much of an annoying way as she could. Julieta hadn’t wanted to deal with it, putting off the task until she finally had to, and enlisted the help of her husband and daughters to put everything back in it’s place before working on dinner.

In the midst of all their work, two pairs of footsteps could be heard approaching, only to stop and turn into a fit of giggles as they watched the chaos of the kitchen. Julieta turned around at the noise, and met the gaze of both Bruno and Pepa, “Out! You’re both banned from my kitchen!”

Pepa gasps, overdramatic as always, before saying, “Your kitchen? This is Casita’s kitchen. We share the space here.”

But as if to prove a point, Casita began to shove the two backwards with the tiles. Julieta’s pretty sure the home still held a grudge against the two for almost burning the whole kitchen down a few years back.

“But I didn’t rearrange your kitchen!” Bruno yells as he’s moved, hoping that by calling it Julieta’s kitchen he’ll earn some brownie points. Casita stops, considering this, before flinging Pepa backwards faster but not letting Bruno come any closer.

“Gracias, Casita,” Julieta tells the home with a smirk on her face. The rest of her family has stopped what they were doing to watch what was going on, slightly confused at the sight before them, but also trying hard not to laugh. Mirabel decides to speak up in defense of her mother, “Haven’t the two of you done enough to Mamá over the past week?”

“It’ll never be enough!” Pepa shouts from where she ended up falling onto the floor.

Curiously getting the better of her, Isabela asks, “What did she even do to deserve this?”

At the question, Julieta freezes, and watches as her siblings look at each other with grins growing wide on their faces. They pull up two chairs, sitting as close to the kitchen as the can get as they make themselves comfortable for a story time.

Julieta stares them straight in the eyes, “Don’t you dare.”

Casita, however, loves to play from all sides, and prevents Julieta from stopping them, while the woman curses the traitor out under her breath.

“Hmm where to begin,” Pepa says, contemplating, “Oh! There was the time she ripped one of her best dresses, she had just been given it and was supposed to be wearing it for our birthday a week later. She claimed it tore because I had a hail storm near her, which I did not.”

“Okay, but Mamá was less mad than she would’ve been if she’d known the truth,” Julieta tries to argue in her defense.

“It only seems like that because you weren’t the one she was mad at! Maybe I should have told her you snuck out a window to go to some party and flirt with everyone there.”

“You were disgustingly flirty with a lot of people,” Bruno feels the need to add on.

“I’m going to need you two to shut up right now.” An unspoken threat lies somewhere within Julieta’s words.

“Oh, don’t want your daughters to hear about all the people who loved you, and how much you loved it?” Pepa teases. She’s got a smirk on her face that’s only growing wider by the second as she sees her sister getting riled up.

Julieta picked up a rolling pin, sending a threatening look in her sister’s direction, which shut her up and wiped the smirk from her face real quick. Pepa was well aware of the kind of damage Julieta was capable of with just the one kitchen utensil. Bruno, finally sensing some slight tension, decides to changed the topic slightly, “Juli also had the easiest access to alcohol because everyone thought she would be cooking with it, but somehow it always ended up stashed and found in one of our rooms.”

“Okay, hold on a minute, I still had to risk getting in trouble to get that for all three of us!”

“Juli, you stashed it in our rooms so many times that by the time you finally kept it in yours, Mamá thought we were trying to pin it on you,” he shot right back at her, to which she folded her arms and got grumpy about because he technically wasn’t wrong.

“Oh!” Pepa speaks back up, smirk returning to her face,” Not to mention she got so much worse and more rebellious when she started dating Agustín!”

The three daughters sat up, curiosity piqued by the wonder of how on Earth their father could make their mother more rebellious. Luisa dared to ask, much to her mother’s dismay, “Really?”

“Oh yes! Your Abuela did not like your Papá at first, so Julieta did everything she thought to push her into accepting that she’d never end their relationship.”

“That kind of sounds sweet though?” Isabela comments.

“Not when you’re tasked with keeping her out of trouble, and really us? Keeping anyone out of trouble? That’s how you know it’s bad. Of course weren’t successful and got yelled at for it too! It’s like Juli was trying to make our lives harder by sneaking him into her bedroom all the time.”

Agustín’s own face has a blush creeping up it,and it’s not hard to put two and two togther. The three girls eyes widen, but the only one of them who speaks is Mirabel, “Gross.”

Bruno nods his head, agreeing with the girl before continuing, “I got told off because I apparently encouraged her by having a vision that the two of them would be together for a very long time. Really! A good vision and I still couldn’t win.”

“Ugh, and I’ll never forget the time we walked in on -“ Pepa is cut off by the sound of Julieta clearing her throat, and comes face to face with the dangerous look in her sister’s eyes.

“One more word. One more word and I will beat you with this rolling pin, heal you, and do it all over again.”

“To be fair, that was pretty traumatizing to see”, Bruno mistakenly adds.

“THAT’S IT! Casita let me at them!” And the house takes the cue that this is a woman on a mission who will not be stopped, aside from giving them a 10 second head start, nothing is done to prevent her from chasing after her siblings, rolling pin in hand. Those remaining in the kitchen can’t help but wince when they hear them yell once Julieta finally reaches them.
