just spent the last life four+ hours setting up this ipod classic 4th gen. here's a summary of all the problems i ran into:

(1) ipod had files in it. they appeared as gray and un-editable on itunes, so i thought reseting the ipod to factory would be the fastest and easiest solution.

turns out the last step of the process is connecting ipod to a wall power source. i do this. nothing happens for at least an hour. ipod is stuck in "connect to the wall" icon screen no matter what i do. the internet says it needs to connect with an actual apple firewire wall connector, which i do not have. tried using my ipad's charger with a usb-to-usb-c adapter that i own. didn't work. eventually figured it out the problem had to do with the amps it needs to get defibrillated. i remember that i own a pretty hefty power bank with a 5v/2.1a output. it works. ipod is reset. i have a nice fun time adding the 6 or so songs i have downloaded on my computer (:

(2) i had downloaded soulseek a while ago and gotten frustrated with it but decided to give it another spin since piracy experts on reddit sing it many praises. it seems to have a heavy culture of egalitarianism: a pop up window informs you that a lot of people's download's are restricted only to other people sharing files.

okay. searches: what kind of files can an ipod classic 4th gen read? (perhaps they are different from the files itunes can read. this is, after all, the last version of itunes ever released, many years and itunes versions after the ipod classic 4th gen.)

ah, yes. my good old scanlating days. take a shot every time i say ‘normally’ and ‘usually’.

a quick glossary:

scanlating – lit. “scan + translating”! this term is applied to, most commonly, manga but of course, generally applies to fan-made scanning, translating, and redrawing without the permission of the original poster. they are most definitely not official.

raw provider – someone, as their name states, sends the ‘raw’ or untranslated copy of a certain series.

translator – self-explanatory! they can either be fluent on the language they are translating or are just very skillful in using google translate / translating apps. it would be best if they have background on the language and very meticulous in their translating.

redrawer – for manga / manhua / manhwa, they fix the sfx and the speech bubbles where the text will be replaced. it’s optional to get rid of the sfx though, but other scanlating groups usually expect the redrawer to do that unless stated otherwise.

typesetter – they basically input the text into the manga / manhua / manhwa from the translated text. if your scanlation group has a website, they usually also type the translated text into the official website too.

proofreader – self-explanatory again! after the translator (if it’s not a novel: then after the redrawer and the typesetter too), they make sure the grammar is correct, there are no typos, or things that shouldn’t be there.

so the process is usually first, acquire some raws. if it’s just korean novels, you can easily get it from kakao page itself since they’re free > screenshot each page > manually scan the page through your chosen translation app > edit the text to fix the grammar. here’s a link where it goes in-detail on how to translate korean novels on your own: link.

it’s really as easy as that! if you have a scanlation group, it gets a lot easier though. they usually send you a google drive file where the chapters are organized with respective folders for each chapter labeled whether they are raws or not, already translated or not, etc. you normally translate with other translators to speed up the process! the file they use are google docs for easy access.

the manga / manhwa / manhua scanlation gets more complicated, especially if you’re involved in a scanlation group. like novels, they send you a google drive containing the chapters from the raw provider. and then, you’re going to write out the translation in a google doc. about this:

depending on your scanlation group, they will probably provide you with color-coding to identify which character is talking or not. i pestered a lot about the formatting before realizing i’m better off with novels, tbh.

when i roped my friend to scanlating though, i added the translation by inserting a comment on the panel where it's supposed to be and yes, it’s still in google drive.

the schedule of the scanlation gets really tough sometimes ngl, especially if you’re not fluent. and back then, i was translating a korean novel not a japanese one 💀 i had no idea what i was thinking. it takes a lot of time to translate manually and to make sure you translated well and kudos to me, i did!

it’s especially tough for redrawers and when i redrew a couple of chapters back then, including the sfx, i literally died. i took me a whole day in general to redraw one chapter. i suggest not to redraw even the sfx good lord. but it was fun!

i unfortunately don’t want to say which novel i translated because it was relatively popular and we got called out by the author... so let’s not do that anymore. as for the manhwa we were translating, it was supposed to be finally, the blue flame but someone got to use first so yeah... it was fun though. great for experience! and as for the manhwa that actually got out, i also can’t say because it got really popular!

i’m thinking of scanlating isekai mynoghra tbh. i have a copy of some raws so i thought of just winging it. and yes, i have lots of free time.

No problem !! But unfortunately the answer is complicated. Generally I look up “text input twine harlowe”, which will give you the result for the actual text input macro which is the pop up. I hated that pop up for a long, long time, and so I looked up “text input box twine harlowe” (because I know how to do text input from an HTML/Javascript standpoint, but it’s not really a 1:1 translation with Harlowe) and dug through those answers, which led me to Bad Ritual’s old way of doing things which involved the obligatory clicking of a button (hot tip, you don’t want to obligate your players to do anything on a technical level: button clicking is pretty low on the complexity scale, but it gets harder depending on screens, dexterity, and memory; it’s overall just easier to not ask them to do things to negate problems at their source). Then, as I was recoding the game for this update, I looked it up again and someone had found an easier answer that I directly copied and pasted.

So while I do have the Harlowe Manual and W3Schools, ultimately the answer to any question is infinite research and a gradually improving ability with programming in general (I wanted to make games so much I went and got a degree in programming thinking that programming degree + writing degree = gaming job).

I regret this is not the first time these clever queries have been broken by accident. I have fixed them this week and added several sets of unit tests to ensure I do not repeat this mistake.

These expansive searches should also work faster, cancel faster, and there are a few new neat cache optimisations to check when an expensive search's results for 'char' or 'character:' can quickly provide results for a later 'character:samus'. Overall, these queries should be a bit better all around. Let me know if you have any more trouble.

The single-tag right-click menu now always shows sibling and parent data, and for all services. Each service stacks siblings/parents into tall submenus, but the tall menu feels better to me than nested, so we'll see how that works out IRL. You can click any sibling or parent to copy to clipboard, so I have retired the 'copy' menu's older and simpler 'siblings' submenu.

These files were a common cause of anti-virus false positives every few months, and are only used by a few advanced users to set up servers and hit network->data->manage upnp, so I have decided that new users will have to install it themselves going forward. Trying to perform a UPnP operation when the exe cannot be found now gives a popup message talking about the situation and pointing to the new readme in the bin directory.

After working with a user, it seems that some clients may not have certain indices that speed up sibling and parent lookups. I am not totally sure if this was due to hard drive damage or broken update logic, but the database now looks for and heals this problem on every boot.

Existing string converters now treat 'hex' or 'base64' decode steps as a no-op, and existing 'file hash' content parsers should update correctly to 'hex' or 'base64' based on what their string converters were doing previously. The help is updated to reflect this. hex/base64 encodes are still in as they are used for file lookup script hash initialisation, but they will likely get similar treatment in future.

This time, let’s talk about the experiences that went through making the event editor v2.

Why I start rework the editor

It was when I moved my camera system to the Cinemachine. And now I was working on adding a new feature to the event editor that I created. However…

Up to this point, the editor I created was too dependent on one class, which was a problem with the scalability of IMGUI. The problem was laying out the layout by executing commands in the code. In addition, the actual data of the event was very difficult to store and manage. So this time, I decided to start building an editor that was fully scalable.

I wanted to have event data stored and managed in the scene again. So I used data management via SerializedObject in a custom editor.

I wanted to use polymorphism somehow to put information into the event list and use it. Older Event editors had to put arrays into serialized data and parse them by number directly because of this problem.

Put the data in Unity!

The event system I’m going to use requires the Json string (value), the reference array to be used by the event, and information for nested events, because of the polymorphic implementation above.

Nested events are used for forms such as conditional statements and options dialogues.

Initially I wanted to implement nested events through several List, but this was not possible due to the 7-level depth limitation of the Unity Serializer, so I fixed it by keeping the branch offsets (layerOffsets) in one-dimensional arrays (values).

And now I have make some sample event data pre-loaded for display and testing in the editor.

It helped me moderately(…) to write the sample data using the implicit operator.

I decided to use UIElements this time.

UIElements is a new editor feature added since 2019.1.

My layout representation rules

First of all, to express the list of events, I expressed only Unity’s basic type, and realized that VisualElement, the basic type of UIElements element, is an inheritable type. EventListItemElement and EventListItemLayerElement were inherited.

Each was an element class to represent a single element of an event and a subelement of a nested event.

When I realized that VisualElement was inheritable, I started to extend the functionality of the element.

EventListItemElement manages the detailed data of the event and EventListItemLayerElement checks the child event elements and creates the EventListItemElement.

I created a structure to track the data so that it can be seen correctly by the user. (Green, red lines)

JsonConvert.SerializeObject is used when data is updated, and JsonConvert.PopulateObject is used when data is changed internally (Undo [Ctrl + Z], Redo [Ctrl + Y], etc).

Now I just need to build a layout that allows you to modify the event’s information.

By the way, the initial form of event code I mentioned in Polymorphism and Json.NET part had a comment in code that says ‘Editor specific features…’.

I used GenericMenu for add event function. And to organize the list, we used the event registration function that we created earlier to organize the menu.

So that’s all I did to create the event list layout. It’s a very long journey…

UIElements was a new feature that I felt familiar with while developing web development and WPF apps. But working with other limitations of Unity wasn’t easy.
