murder boy game reviews, a very normal post by fen:

don’t romance me: this one is weirdly more intense than the others to me, i guess maybe because it feels almost... realistic by comparison i guess? like the guy (i dont think he has a name. so im just calling him the guy.) feels like a real guy who could exist, which makes this one hit in a different way imo. its a good contrast to the others and each playthrough is really short so its fun to just try to figure out all the endings cause there are a Lot. but yeah go into this one prepared

john doe +: mmmm this one wasn’t for me. john doe just doesn’t really have any personality besides “is obsessed with you for some reason” and all routes are basically identical except for the very end being slightly different. and it takes a weirdly long time to get through for how short it is because it’s made in rpgmaker (i think?) rather than ren’py or something similar so theres no text skip. idk, just not my thing

lover’s trophy: i really wanna give the creators for this one a bunch of money so they can make a bigger game because both boys are Really interesting and i like them a lot, i just want... more? like there are quite a few endings but the game feels unfinished in some ways. there are some menu glitches, there aren’t many CGs, etc. i want mooooore but it’s quite good as it is and well worth checking out

Notes: leo’s first christmas in the system, during his initial training period (just under 3 months into initial training) Can be skipped, is flashback scene, is nearly mindless/senseless suffering. I know I was like hey next up is a comfort prompt, and then now here we are with this (i kept that exact same note from the last time i posted. excellent work). i wrote it it exists now it’s everyone else’s problem, as usual.

✥ The First Time Leo Cried on Christmas ✥

“I’ll be off for the next few days,” Handler Jason Lopez said, zipping his jeans as he caught his reflection in the steel cabinet. “Taking my fiancé to Haaaa-waa-iiiiii.” He sang the last part, then his expression immediately dropped. He smoothed out his hair and inhaled deeply. Only once he was satisfied did he turn his attention back to Leo. 

Leo sat curled on the side of the bed, his arms wrapped around himself, the bite guard still locked tightly between his teeth. He nodded, and a runaway tear leaked from those big, hopeless eyes. Jason thought they were all dried up by now. “Aw,” he said, an expression of pure, fake sympathy on his face. “You’ll be alright without me for a couple days.”

Jason ascended on him slowly, smiling as he unclasped the back of the gag. “When I get back, maybe we’ll give it a go without this.” His hand lingered there, holding him still. He leaned in and pressed his lips against Leo’s forehead. Anxiety rolled off of the worker in waves, but he didn’t resist. “I know you can do it,” he whispered.

Leo’s eyes snapped up, a silent plea. 

“In the meantime,” he said, as he stepped away, straightening his back, “I’ve left some notes for the other handlers.”

That was three days ago. Leo hasn’t eaten since then, and hasn’t slept more than an hour without interruption. His stomach churns nonstop, empty, or, he supposes, not completely empty. He tries not to think about it.

The click of a lock startles him awake; he scrambles to sit, frantically brushing his hand down his face just to make sure they didn’t get the guard into his mouth while he slept.

It’s Handler Lopez who comes in.

“Merry Christmas, Kid,” the handler says by way of greeting, as the clock rolls over to midnight. He slides his thumb over Leo’s throat as Leo swallows; he fights to hold himself still. “Did you miss me?”  His stomach lurches and he tenses, closing his eyes.

“Y–Yes, sir.”

The handler smiles. “A woman from a charity dropped off cookies for all my boys this afternoon. If you can get through the next hour without directly disobeying me, I’ll bring you one before I leave.”

“Okay,” Leo whispers through clenched teeth, his tone is mostly empty, but there’s an edge of some unwelcome emotion behind it. His head is foggy; he’s dizzy already. He realizes his mistake as soon as he’s spoken.

He watches, jaw locked and eyes burning, as the handler’s expression darkens.

“Say that again.” The handler’s voice is low, his face just inches from Leo’s now.

Leo swallows. He hasn’t eaten in… his best guess is three days, but he isn’t sure. He opens his mouth to speak, but no words come.

“It’s that fucking tone. Part of me thought we were past it. But the other part of me? I knew as soon as my fucking shift started, something told me, put Leo at the end of the day. You know what I said to myself? That little shit’s gonna be in rare form. And I was right, wasn’t I? What’s the matter, Leo? Didn’t enjoy my vacation?”

Something in his voice worms its way into Leo’s brain, and he’s smart enough to know he should be afraid. “I’m sor–”

The crack of knuckles across his jaw sends him back into the headboard, black dots momentarily distorting his vision.

The handler’s shift ends at two, but he doesn’t leave until six, and he leaves in the extra clothes the DLS keeps on site.

“I want him placed on administrative leave,” the new on-site doctor says to Kyle Langley, the senior trainer who seems to constantly bear the weight of the handler’s fuck-ups. The doctor can barely conceal the rage behind his eyes. He’s been here for maybe a month, and already thinks he’s a fucking saint for daring to pretend like this shit doesn’t happen weekly.

“That’s not really your call,” Kyle responds.

They watch Leo through two-way glass, fighting sleep as the painkillers kick in. He’s conscious, which is a win, apparently. He has been for the entire three hours that he’s been in the clinic. He was conscious as they dragged him through the halls, and he was conscious as the doctor fixed his shoulder, and he was conscious as his back was stitched up, as tubes and IVs and monitors were connected to his body, as scans were done and drugs were administered. To his credit, he kept himself still, for the most part. Kyle stayed by his side and held his free hand, the other restrained for the worst of it. Silent tears slid down his cheeks, but he was mostly quiet. It wasn’t until he was patched up, his heart rate back to a somewhat normal pace, and his breathing even and steady enough, that the doctor helped him roll to his side, covered him in a light blanket, and followed Kyle into the observation room.

Leo is curled up tightly now, red eyes staring blankly at the mirror, the bandage that covers the open wounds across his back is already reddening.

“No, it’s yours. Just like it’s your responsibility to control your fucking unit, Langley.” They watch him in silence. Every few seconds his eyes close heavily and stay shut just long enough for Kyle to think he’s finally slipped into sleep. Then he flinches, opens his eyes, gasps in a breath, and draws the blanket tighter to himself. “I want him out, or I promise you, I will report what happened here tonight.”

Kyle knows he’s bluffing, but he’s also not wrong to want Jason fired. Too many injuries, too much callousness. They’re already on thin ice, with the state reps fighting for additional legislature daily. It’s only a matter of time before real reform comes, and the only way to stay ahead of it is to avoid events that so fucking graphically endanger people’s lives.

“What the fuck happened in there?” It’s the doctor’s voice, all but whispered, that brings Kyle back to the present.

“Probably just pushed the wrong buttons.” Kyle leans closer to the glass. There’s a heat lamp somewhere above Leo’s body, a nurse sits silently in the corner, splitting his attention between Leo and the monitors surrounding him. Kyle looks over the report Lopez wrote. “Lopez wasn’t able to be very specific, we had to press him hard for any real details. He was reluctant to give us details about the why and the how much; we’ll probably have to review the security footage. The majority of the damage came from a baton, where he was struck ‘probably around a hundred or maybe two hundred times?’” They both watch Leo. His eyes are closed now, but a steady stream of tears still fall from under his eyelids. “What’s the outlook, doc?”

“He’ll be in the clinic for at least a few days, and even then, you’ll need to go easy on him for several weeks. I’ll write it all up, but I suggest, when you terminate Lopez, finding a handler who can utilize different methods. Blunt force is going to be off the table for a while.”

“I’ve got someone in mind. His caseload is pretty full, but he’s inquired about Leo a few times in passing. Excellent success rate, pristine record. I don’t think he’s ever had an incident on file. If you have time to talk with him before Leo discharges, I think he’ll appreciate it. He’ll want to formally introduce himself as quickly as possible, regardless, so once it’s all locked in, I’ll send him down here.”

“Otto?” The doctor raises his eyebrows, and Kyle nods. The handler has refused several promotions over his three-year tenure, and has something of a reputation for both being effective and being ‘humane.’ It’s dubious at best, but of the options he’s aware of, it’s the most logical. “Good. Not that it’s my business, but I think taking a different approach with him might do wonders.” The doctor notices a little bag in Kyle’s hand as he flips it over and over. There’s a cookie, with just one or two small bites taken out. “What’s the story with that?” He nods toward the bag.

“Hah.” Kyle lifts it, regarding the tree-shaped treat. “Fuck if I know, Lopez said to offer it to him if he does well for the rest of the day.”

The doctor shakes his head. “He’s going to be unconscious for the rest of the day, you can throw it away.” Kyle nods and drops it into the trash bin. They’re silent, watching Leo fight sleep, until, after several minutes, his body stills. “What the fuck are we doing here,” the doctor whispers.

Kyle doesn’t respond.

cuz winston *must* be working at Taylor Mason Capital b/c he really values working with taylor more than, say, wanting a job that will make him the most money, or will necessarily look the best on a resumé if he’s just looking to up his stats, b/c yeah, this is sure an unlikely opportunity for him where this is what we’re assuming is his First Fancy Job and he’s getting to be the Top Quant right out of the gate, but he must also know that like, it’s still like “oh so you were head quant at a brand new fund :/” and also he must know that there’s a Risk with said fund and he might even end up having been head quant at a new fund that burned out really quick, super impressive........and, we Know that winston *knows* how good he is at what he does, even though he keeps getting dunked on for that like he’s sooo conceited lol like. he IS that good, sorry!!!! why should he downplay it, we don’t actually see him being one of these shitheads with a fragile ego trying to prove themselves Superior or whatever.....ANYWAYS yeah the point being that, winston claiming to have a lot of offers already in the interview might very well Not be any kind of bluff, and he’d surely know that he could rise through the Quant Ranks quickly enough at some other fund even if he started out as anything but Our Main Quant at those places.......and if Getting Tf Paid Top Dollar was really his primary concern, “go with the brand new hedge fund which doesn’t have Established History / Experience / Clout and has the one big investor but who knows what’ll come next and any business that Just opened is not your safest bet even if you trust in your own skill and in that of your ceo and you Know that even if you’re not immediately destroyed, funds will be tighter / of a Lesser Amount than at a bigger established fund”.........the now-dramatic-irony of him talking about how those Tech Firms Out West pay guarantees, not bonuses.........like, when he was trying to get onboard with axe cap, he was obvs interested in trying to leverage to get Paid more, which is like, not necessarily winston wanting to be a trillionaire but also just how stupidly everyone’s supposed to like Play The Game of negotiating / leveraging / calling your employer’s bluff to get a certain starting salary / get a raise or whatever, dumb as hell baked-in Requirement........discuss your wages with coworkers gang!!! anyways. and but Also winston makes it clear when interviewing for axe cap that Working With Taylor Mason has appeal, even if he’s flippant about it, cuz he’s flippant about all of it cuz that’s his shtick here.....

like, when it’s Taylor Alone who calls him back eventually, he’s fine with meeting up with Just Them, and later on meeting up with Just Them (and the other quants, rip) again, and agrees to work in this lil basement evidently Not on axe cap premises b/c he’d been at axe cap’s offices and this is Not That Place......and yeah him talking about taylor selling axe on using his algorithm in kompenso sure implies that winston has this whole time Assumed that all of this was still ultimately in the service of axe cap.......and he was apparently fine with reporting to Taylor Alone and not getting to rub elbows with any other higher-ups, and he’s obviously pleased well enough with a “good work :)” from taylor and isn’t like “hey be sure to tell axe & co i did this singlehandedly etc” or anything, and he’s not really complaining about the whole “work in this lil basement Not at axe cap hq with taylor mason dropping in at least once to check on you and that’s about it” situation, which obviously is hardly that “You’re A Valued Axe Cap Employee” treatment one might expect if they wanted that.....winston’s glad that taylor called him, he’s trying to appeal to them and what *they* want to see rather than how he tried to go for what he thinks [a place like axe cap] would wanna see like he did in the interview, he’s showing up at this weird basement rendezvous to be on a 3 person quant team of taylor’s, he’s fine to not only do this on his own but also accept those increased demands that make it a [fifty(? or 15, either way) phds would work on this]-Level task, and then he’s glad just to have taylor’s approval at the end of the day.......they Wouldn’t have been able to promise him any leverage of “please do your best work on this” with like, promotions / clout within axe cap or axe-cap-levels of Lots Of Payment b/c like, well taylor wouldn’t outright lie anyways but also Especially wouldn’t if they wanted to keep this quant around for tmc, so winston must never have been asking about that kind of thing

and then, bless your Missing Scene fic but there’s zero canon content re: “uh how/when did taylor break it to winston that this algorithm was for their own fund actually and btw do you want to work for that fund instead,” but presumably it went smoothly enough, he was already happy to Effectively work for them alone apparently even if he still thought that yeah, he was working for taylor who was working for axe........just Yeah altogether it’s evident that “Working With Taylor Mason” must matter more to him than “working with any Other big name financiers” or “getting paid as much as he can get” or “raking in that clout asap to leverage with Other jobs or just like, in general.”

and then of course you have the fact that taylor is Recognizing his ability by calling him back and offering him this job, going “despite your demeanor your skills are superior” and “those other two were sweet, but you’re more talented, i need you,” [praying hands emoji], and giving him this Second Chance and entrusting him with this Solo re: building this algorithm which, unbeknownst at the time to him, is really this linchpin of their hopes & dreams of launching their own secret fund here, and really they must’ve been planning from the start to keep him around if he succeeded b/c it’s not like the algorithm and their whole planned Quant Department wouldn’t continue to be integral to the fund’s success, it wouldn’t really be ideal to have this guy be the one to build an algorithm to reel in an investor who’s working in.....wait for it......billions of dollars here, and then be like, okay bye dude. they must Know how good he is same as winston knows how good he is, and him being Head Quant from the very start was surely never just about mase cap having precious few employees at the very start of things....they could’ve like given him that Lead Position temporarily or whatever, they’re ceo. but they really do value him as like, maybe he doesn’t have the ideal ~personality~ for what fucking ever, either for being Properly Assertive and Impressively Flashy like axe cap might want, or just easy to work with, which taylor would care more about than axe cap would lol, but yknow, they value his Abilities and surely they must also value his efforts re: I Promise To Try and re: his really singlehandedly making that brilliant amazing algorithm which evidently did the trick as they hoped it would

and guess who i also love to quote and paraphrase lol i also think of mariame kaba talking about interpersonal Conflict being possible Opportunities in a relationship, because working through said conflict can allow the relationship to grow / deepen / strengthen. which sure seems to Hold Hands with this idea: that you can Be Angry with someone because you already know that won’t break the relationship, and that even if you don’t already know that, going through that experience / process of Being Angry with someone and coming out the other side together will show that the relationship can handle that / will have involved gaining tools to be able to handle that going forward. and really like, we’ve seen winston Forgive taylor’s anger at him right off, and that may not be the sweeping heights of love but it came from Understanding (and....low self-es steam probably lol) but no really, he Shows that he understands why they reacted like that by behaving in this way that he figures is more in line with what they actually want, just talking and being direct with no boxes or [wags] or standard boring interview questions or posturing, showing he’s willing to work with them in the “please hire me” and “i’ll try to Behave” ways lol........and taylor is offering their own patience and sympathy and restraint and Understanding and willingness to bend.......things are happening on an emotional plane between them here.

and then after winston chooses to be on board with mase cap, and after he’s worked for them so long that it’s comp time baby, and after these few Sample Interactions we’ve seen in which taylor doesn’t cut winston down or show contempt for him and they continue to directly or indirectly validate him, winston can be Angry with them and taylor can (definitely Sorta) be Angry back, and winston surely even Stayed Angry after that scene in 4x11, and he didn’t quit, and was that [terrible self-esteem actually lol] or was it him believing that there could be a way out of this state of anger between him and taylor? both?? we get to decide!! b/c he’s sure not Validated and Vindicated until later lol.....what does he sit there on that couch alone in that room and Think in those moments...........and then once things Are better resolved, they have this whole [episode of conflict] in their history, and like is the whole Point of all of this, that’s hardly necessarily just some awful and unfortunate thing.......their relationship can survive something like that, and the conflict sure sparked this kind of Genuine Interaction between them which couldn’t have happened if winston just shied away from all this / kept it to himself because he didn’t think taylor would Listen or Care or Understand. 

and it’s Not Just About The Money, and even when he expresses that he’s upset about this perceived disrespect / not being valued as an employee, we Know that he’s not someone who’s got this need to feel superior to everybody else / like he’s always Winning, and we know he’s not after Maximum Clout, but he does want to Work With taylor and he evidently wants to feel valued By Them, who does happen to be his boss and does have this avenue to potentially treat any employees unfairly. and we know that winston *knows* in this objective way how good his work is, and both winston and taylor have acknowledged that yeah, His Work / professional quantly ablities have value, so winston Knows he should expect for that to be valued in the form of “your quantributions are important and you’re getting paid to reflect that”........and that he feels like he’s for once not being Allowed Honesty re: everyone supposedly being pressured into deferring is like..........what do he and taylor have if not earnest, open communication b/c they both value and respect what the other Really Has To Say!!!!!! that’s winnie n tay and it’s also tayston.

ANYWAYS even i don’t know why this is so long, and also it’s 7am. i definitely think that winston trusted taylor and the Relationship between them to be able to handle Anger (his, for once, lol) and for that Anger to even potentially be something Constructive. and he was right. and in 4x12 he’s there with them at the very end, wearing the tmc logo, standing behind them in the hellhole which is axe cap hq, knowing that taylor is the one person (here, certainly) who definitely Gets and who’s Got him, who’s asserted this loyalty and commitment to him after he’s certainly done that re: them, and once again winston definitely has this Choice to be here with them just like he must’ve had that choice to join up with their fund in the first place, he’s never been trapped with them or forced into alliance with them, and we just Know that he’s not choosing to be here just for Linkedin reasons / what’s best for career advancement and/or for raking it in as best as he can manage and/or for gaining clout and status or whatever, and we sure never see him reaping some kind of deluxe treatment/benefits just for being closely associated with taylor / having their approval. everything we see points to winston caring most about what happens between him and taylor and that he gets to work with them and that he’s here because of that mutual respect and value for each other. 

and really, the show also repeatedly tells us that winston Does basically have these world-class abilities and *is* that valuable, and we know that winston Knows how good he is, and he must’ve legitimately had all those offers and known that he’s really good enough that these places Should compete for him. he must’ve known that he has this Potential here and all of these options laid out in front of him, and he takes taylor’s call and shows up in a basement for them and singlehandedly writes an algorithm good enough to found their fund upon and he follows them there when now he’s got this Proof of just how incredible his work is and could’ve leveraged that anywhere else. but his relationship with taylor has always had this personal aspect to it and the fact is that, even with his choice of Paths laid out in front of him, he chose and keeps choosing the geography of winnie n tay. In the Sand

So, a few days ago I had this vision of the Seed brothers playing beach volleyball, almost Top Gun montage-esque like. ANYWAY, started writing it, because why not, and this is what came out... not at all like Top Gun, but still a bit of fun, i guess?

Synopsis : Casey’s put together a bit of a Volleyball tournament for the Testy Festy, and it’s the perfect weather for it. Rooks pulled together her Justice League, and is aiming for a win, but John has other plans - his Seed Suicide Squad is definitely coming first. Jacob is shirtless... and in tiny shorts... for reasons.... good reasons....

Warning : This is crack. This is also a bit shit. I don’t even know what was happening. Also, obviously, no cult, no animosity - well, okay, a little bit -, no events of Far Cry 5.

The sun beat down on Rook, unusually warm for mid-September in Montana, and she turned her face to take in as much of it as possible, sighing contently. She was sitting on the bleachers around the baseball-field-turned-festival-grounds, which was now covered in sand, watching as Casey set up the Volleyball net he had somehow managed to procure.

“Hey, Rook, give us a hand” Whitehorse barked to her, and she quickly jumped up in order to help them erect the net. With Casey and Whitehorse on one side, and Pratt and Rook on the other, they got the poles slammed into the pre-dug holes in the sand, and the net evened out. Hudson whooped as she carried another esky over to the erected tents.

“I gotta say Casey,” the tall, dark haired woman began, “this volleyball tournament was a brilliant idea – and it’s perfect for the weather”

“When was the last time we had sunshine like this in September? This is a California summer day. How did you organise this Casey?” Pratt added, also turning into the sun and beaming. Whitehorse paused a moment, removed his hat and rubbed his head briefly before replacing the hat.

Hudson sidled up to Earl, comfortably resting her hand on his shoulder, “You know you’re gonna have to ditch the hat, Earl, if we wanna win”, she grinned at him.

Whitehorse was the only team member in full gear, the three deputies had all opted to go a bit more relaxed, on account of the heat and in honour of the festival. Pratt had a pair of sunset coloured swimming trunks and a black tank top, his Deputy jacket piled on the bleachers with the girls’ jackets. Both Hudson and Rook were in denim shorts, Rooks more worn and ripped than Hudsons, and Hudson wore a plain white t-shirt, while Rook had an oversized Cougars Baseball tee tucked loosely into her shorts.

“The hat stays on” Whitehorse told them, voice allowing no room for argument.

“If you want to win, the hat will have to come off… or you can sub out, and I’ll play instead” Casey and the three Deputies all swung around as Marshall Burke swaggered onto the baseball field, sporting a pair of, perhaps too small, black trunks and a plain black t-shirt.

Earl grinned, “That was the plan, thanks Burke”. Rook launched herself at Burke, hugged him deeply, and Hudson moved over to shake his hand, Pratt pulling him in for a quick hug, “I called in back up sorry kids, I’m too old for this shit” Whitehorse explained happily. Rook beamed at him and moved to give him a quick hug.

Rook had quickly been established in the community as a hugger in the year since she’d arrived. Most people in the County accepted the hugs as part of her being around, particularly her team.

They continued the set-up, with the assistance of Burke and Mary May, and managed to pull it all together very quickly, thanks to Casey’s brilliant planning. They praised the chef for his planning, and his brilliant volleyball idea. The sign-up sheet had been placed in the bar two weeks ago, asking teams of 4 to sign up to compete in the tournament at the testy festy. There had been a few surprise volunteers – Nick Rye had teamed up with Sharky, Hurk and Jess, and The Seed family had signed up.

Well, John had signed up the Seed family.

Rook rolled her shoulders, grinning at Hudson as the woman approached her, hand held up for a high five. Rook smacked her hand into the other woman’s, and Hudson gently held her hand there for a second, “You ready to win, Rookie? Cause I don’t like losing”.

Rook beamed up at the taller woman, “I named our team the Justice League for a reason, Joey, we always win in the end”.

Hudson beamed at her.

It took a while for the festival to get into full swing, most patrons arriving around 11, and the tournament starting at 12. Rook was standing with Adelaide, both admiring the display of bare legs and shoulders. Adelaide was starting a betting ring of how many shirts would come off, with bonuses for guesses about who would lose their shirts first.

Most of the women in the county were in on it, and Adelaide had an almost predatory grin permanently stuck to her face. Joseph Seed was of course not included, as he was renowned for his lack of a shirt.

The Seed family rocked up just before 12, and Rook struggled to not let her jaw drop. Jacob, well over six foot, wearing nothing but a pair of grey, way-too-small, basketball shorts and no shirt, considerable amounts of muscle on display. Joseph in a pair of modest black swim trunks and, as per usual, no shirt. Faith in…. was that a tennis outfit? A white skort and matching white sports bra.

And then John jumped out of the truck in a pair of what had to be designer blue swim trunks, again way too small for him, and a plain black t-shirt. Rook worked hard to keep the frown from her face. Why did John have to be the only Seed brother with his shirt on?

Life wasn’t fair. Rook sighed, and Adelaide chuckled knowingly from beside her, “Don’t worry, Deputy, I’m sure John will lose it before too long”

Rook blushed brightly, and she turned to fix Adelaide with a glare, “Not another word, Addy, not one more”.

Adelaide’s grin spread, and her eyes narrowed, “Of course. But the entire County knows of your little crush on John. In fact, I think John is the only one who doesn’t know,” Rook glared at her and Adelaide held her hands up, quickly re-evaluating a few things in her head “Now, Jacob is disqualified for arriving without a shirt on. Oh look, there’s Xander… why does he still have his shirt on?!”

Rook shook her head, smiling, as Adelaide stormed off towards Xander.

Hudson quickly took Adelaide’s place next to Rook, bumping her shoulder into Rooks, “Please don’t tell me you’re gonna let John Seed distract you from winning this thing” she kept her voice low, but raised an eyebrow at Rook, teasing gently.

Rook growled, “Nothing is gonna distract me from winning today, Joey. Justice League doesn’t lose”

“They will lose to the Seed Suicide Squad” Neither woman had heard John approach them, and Rook jumped slightly when his voice appeared behind them.

Hudson just rolled her eyes, “Of course you would name yourselves that” she muttered as she walked away.

Rook pouted at John, “You totally stole my theme”. John laughed at her as Jacob moved in behind him, towering over Deputy.

“No one else agreed to that name, Dep, don’t worry” Jacobs voice was gruff, but still kind, and he rested a large hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently.

Rook poked her tongue out at John, who smacked his brothers shoulder, “What happened to family first?!”

Jacob raised an eyebrow at his youngest brother, “Dep basically is family now, John. And besides, you did steal her theme”

Rook grinned as John spluttered and began trying to argue with Jacob, which quickly proved pointless, and turned as a bell rang out.

Mary May was standing on a crate, holding up a large bell. “It’s time for the volleyball tournament to begin! Can we have ‘Planes on Fire’ and the Seed Family on the court please, and everyone else off!”

Rook turned around and wished Jacob and John good luck before moving over to stand by Burke and Pratt, who were deep in discussion on the far side of the court, both nursing already half empty beer bottles. She stood by them for a moment as they discussed tactics, before growing bored and moving to sit on the bleachers next to Grace Armstrong, and they were soon joined by Adelaide, who brought three beers with her, offering one to both other women.

Adelaide elbowed Rook lightly when the Seed family took to the court, discussed some last minute plans, “bets are set for John to take his shirt off within five minutes” she told her with a smirk.

Rook rolled her eyes and swigged her beer again, smiling when Nick, Sharky, Hurk and Jess took their place on the field. The three boys were all wearing matching American flag swim trunks, while Jess sported denim shorts and an oversized American flag tee that clearly belonged to one of the boys. Kim Rye sat next to Rook and Adelaide, carrying the sleeping baby closely.

Rook briefly played with her goddaughter before focussing on the match as it began, taking note of Adelaide standing up with her stop watch running on her phone.

Joseph served for the Seed family, jumping elegantly and tossing the ball gracefully over the net, for it to be returned aggressively by Sharky. Faith easily pumped the ball back up, setting it up for Jacob, who leapt up and forward, slamming the ball over the net onto the ground on the other side of the court. Faith cheered along with half the members of the crowd, while John smirked, high fiving his brothers.

Adelaide was smirking when John started to pull up his shirt, turning her phone around show Rook the 4:57 showing on her phone, proving that it had indeed taken less than five minutes, as John threw his shirt off to the side, and Addy quickly moved off to start passing out money to women throughout the crowd.

Hudson made her way over and sat down next to Rook, who struggled to take her eyes off of the now shirtless John. “Rook, Rook focus on me,” Hudson shook her a little and Rook turned to eye her impatiently, “Hey, no distractions. Eyes on the prize, not the runner up”

Rook raised an eyebrow, “Is that not a prize?” She asked, gesturing to the three Seed brothers.

Hudson glared at her, “No, Rook. The trophy is the prize. Pay attention and try to find their weaknesses. Focus”

Rook huffed, but leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees, and grumbled “Okay”.

Jess was surprisingly the best player on their team, moving around so quickly that it seemed impossible, diving into the sand to hit balls back up for Nick or Sharky to spike back to the Seed family. Hurk used his bulk to block as much as he could but wasn’t quick enough for Jacobs spikes or Faiths returns. Faith was almost ethereal, flitting over the court to smack balls over the net, but was easily distracted.

Rook was blushing, sure that she must be red as a tomato, and Kim laughed at her as she wheezed when John leapt into the air and spiked the ball, stretching out and showing off all the muscles in his chest, shoulders and arms.

The smell of Casey’s cooking started to drift over as they got ever closer to the main reason for the festival, and Rook downed her second beer as the teams switched sides. Pratt and Burke made their way over, sitting with Kim, Rook and Hudson, trading notes on what they had picked up about the two teams.

Rook struggled to take her eyes off of John, now having his back to her, and she was thoroughly enjoying the way his back muscles clenched and stretched. Even with her preference for the youngest Seed brother, she was very happy to appreciate the other two Seed brothers.

Kim thoroughly enjoyed teasing Rook for the second half of the game, happily talking as loudly as possible and laughing when Rook grabbed her pointing hands.

Jacob spiked, yet again, but Hurk smacked it back into their court, punching the air as Faith narrowly missed saving the ball. John cried out, about to start yelling but Joseph grabbed his arm, pulling their heads together so their foreheads rested together and spoke quietly to him, and he calmed down immediately.

John stepped back and rolled his shoulders, turning away from his brother.

Rook saw his eyes blazing with barely contained fury.

By the end of the game, the score was tight, but the Seed family won by a few points, which meant they continued in the tournament.

There was a half hour break while everyone grabbed some food and Rook and her team prepped to verse the Whitetails – Eli, Tammy, Wheaty and Walker. John went in search of his shirt, which seemed to have disappeared, and if Rook saw Adelaide picking up a piece of material and ducking off to the bar with it, who was she to say?

Burke was acting like a professional, giving them tips and hints and talking tactics, which Rook tried to absorb as much as possible, but that was hard when over Burkes shoulder she could see the Seed brothers and Faith huddled together talking.

And John was pouring a bottle of water over his head, which trailed down his chest.

He caught her staring and winked at her as she tore her eyes away, back to Burke.

Hudson smacked her lightly in the arm and Rook rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, mouthing ‘sorry. Focused now’.

Mary May stood on her stool and asked them the Justice League and the Whitetails to get on the court, and Rook rolled her shoulders, laughing as Hudson pulled her top off to reveal an olive green sports bra, and threw a wink over her shoulder to Rook, who followed suit and pulled the oversized cougars jersey over her head, revealing her matching olive sports bra. Then the high fived and followed through with a butt smack.

Burke raised an eyebrow at them, and Rook laughed as Hudson explained, “We’ve watched Top Gun so many times to prepare for this, we know what we’re doing”

Pratt laughed then too, “I didn’t realise that’s what we were aiming for”

Adelaide wolf whistled, and Rook blew her a kiss.

John wanted to win and knew that the best way to do that was to pay attention to the teams playing, identify their weaknesses and build a strategy from there.

But paying attention was hard when his Deputy was out there running around in a sports bra and tiny ripped shorts, sweating and stretching and grunting in the hot sun.

He hadn’t been expecting that, hadn’t expected to be so distracted by her.

Jacob sat down beside him, “I hope you aren’t as distracted by her as she is by you,” John could hear the slight laughter in Jacobs voice, and anger flared in him, “I was planning on using you against her… but I think we might just have to write both of you off”

John glared at his brother, “I’m not distracted by her” he hissed.

Jacob raised an eyebrow, smirking, “Of course not,” he waived over Joseph and Faith, who came over with a large stick of fairy floss, and leaned back as he spoke, “I’m planning on using John to distract the Deputy”

Faith and Joseph both nodded without argument, “That’s a good idea” Faith added, happily munching on the colourful treat, which she then offered to Jacob, who raised an eyebrow but took a small pinch.

John was fuming, “I’m not just a piece of meat,” he snarled, “I’m not just going to stand there and look pretty, I’m going to play to win”

As he stormed off, Joseph moved to go after him, but Jacob stopped him, “let him go. He’s going to get angry, and then he’ll play better”

Joseph frowned at him, “He is our brother, not just a pawn in your strategy”

Jacob grunted, “He wanted this game, and he wants to win, I’m giving him what he wants”

Rook was sweating heavily by the time the game was almost over, but at least they were in the lead. There had been a few close calls, but between Hudson and Burkes height, and Pratt and Rooks speed, they'd managed to pull ahead on the score board, and they were down to the last point needed to win.

Eli threw the ball up and Wheaty smashed it over the net, and Rook dove, flicking the ball back up so that Pratt could smack it up higher and Hudson threw herself up and spiked the ball back over the net.

Tammy dove, but didn’t quite make it, and Rook whooped along with the team and half of the crowd. That was it, they’d won, now it was between them and the Seed family.

Rook high fived Hudson again and Pratt picked her up and spun her around as she laughed. Mary May announced another half hour break before the final, and that Casey was ready to serve up his famous testy delicacies.

John approached Rook while the rest of her team moved out to grab some food, offering her a smile as he came to stand before her, “Congratulations, Deputy, you played really well”

Rook couldn’t help the blush that painted her cheeks as his stood in front of her, still shirtless, with his hands on his hips, the muscles in his arms tensed.

“Thanks John,” she mumbled, “You did too”

John put his hand on her arm, and thanked her, before a look of concern flashed over his face and he put one hand against her forehead, “You’re really burning up, are you feeling okay?”. He stepped a little bit closer, forcing her to look up at him, and she could feel her blush get more apparent as she fell into his blue eyes.

“N- no, no… I’m…. I’m fine, thank… thank you John”, he had to know that she had feelings for him, everyone else in the county did, but she wasn’t able to feel anything but wobbly as he moved his hand from her forehead to under her chin.

He smiled softly to her, “Okay, just look after yourself, Deputy, I don’t want you getting hurt”

Her heart was beating so hard in her chest that she was sure he’d be able to see it, but he didn’t break eye contact and he seemed to be leaning closer.

Rook stopped breathing.

And she was being pulled away, and Hudson stepped between her and John, “Hey now, that’s a dirty trick, John” she hissed at him.

Rook felt herself deflate, and she rubbed the back of her neck as Hudson guided her away from John and towards the food. Burke offered her a bottle of water and a plate of barbecued meat, which she sheepishly thanked him for. Pratt was over with Jacob, and they seemed to be arguing quietly.

Hudson stood in front of Rook as she ate, putting her hands on both her shoulders, “Don’t let him distract you, Rook. Eyes on the prize”

Rook was too busy chewing to respond, but Hudson nodded anyway, “yeah, I know, that seemed like a really cute, genuine moment. But you know how dramatic John is, and you also know how much he hates losing. So, don’t let him get into your head, okay Rook? We’re relying on you”

Rook nodded, still blushing, swallowing her food and mumbling a “Yes, Joey”

It took everything in her to not look over her should to find out look for John.

When the two teams stepped back onto the court after the break, Rook was ready for John to be as distracting as possible. Hudson had told her to fight fire with fire, so she was very careful to stretch where he could see her, bending and stretching with Hudson.

John had only raised an eyebrow, looking to Jacob, who shrugged, “Guess we aren’t the only ones who had intended to use someone as a distraction”

And then Jacob chuckled at John, and John struggled to contain his fury; Deputy was more than just a tool, how dare they treat her as such.

“Okay, Jacob, lets win this thing” Jacob held Johns eye contact for a moment, and nodded once. John squared his shoulders, letting the rage filter into his muscles.

The Seeds played a hard game, and Rook struggled to not get distracted by John. He took every opportunity to make eye contact with her, flexing in absurd ways that made her both laugh and blush, winking at her when he saw the red paint her cheeks.

Hudson had smacked her on the arm four times now, and even Pratt was starting to glare at her.

It wasn’t until Jacob and John high fived that Rook started to get angry. She watched as John turned back to her and she glared at him.

How dare he take advantage of her feelings like that?!

So she rolled her shoulders, and got ready to play.

They’d brought it back, and somehow managed to get to the final point as a tie.

John had realised quickly that the game was up and had returned his focus on the game, but it hadn’t been enough to stop Rooks fury. She had been completely focussed on setting up spikes, diving all over the court to smack the ball up off of the sand, and up into the air for the others to throw over the net. She played hyper aggressively, furious that John had discovered her feelings, which she had managed to keep a secret for so long, and that he had tried to take advantage of them.

Pratt hit the ball up for Burke to spike, and Burke thumped it over, Faith caught it, flinging it upwards towards Jacob, who thumped it back down. Rook dove forward, flicking the ball back up to Pratt, who popped it over to Hudson.

Hudson flew into the air, bringing her hand back to smash the ball over the net.

John dove for it, but Faith dove at the same time, and they ended up smacking into each other, and missing the ball.

Rook roared in victory along with the rest of the team, and most of the crowd. She was hoisted into the air by Pratt, who swung her around, before Burke came over and they rested her on their shoulders as she punched the air.

Hudson caught her as she jumped down and pulled her in for a tight hug and then pulled back to high five her.

The Seed family came over and shook all their hands, Jacob even giving Pratt a chest bump, which earned a lot of laughs from the crowd.

Sharky and Hurk popped bottles of champagne all over them before handing the bottles over, and Mary May stood on her stool to announce them the official winners, and hand them a medium sized trophy, which they gave to Rook and then held her up again as she waved it around, cheered on by the crowd.

Once the excitement died down a bit, Rook ended up with a whole bottle of champagne, which she drank straight from, and Hudson had the other. John approached her as the others stepped away, and she glared at him, resting her weight on her back leg.

He grinned as he stood in front of her, “That was a beautiful game, Deputy”, he drew out her title, which he did when he wanted something or was frustrated with her.

She grunted, “Yeah, you too, John. You still upset that your little tactic didn’t work?”

She felt the blush hit her cheeks, but her anger kept her going.

Johns grin turned smug, “Well, it was working, wasn’t it? You just got angry,” He scratched his chin, “and we all know that nothing can stop you once you’re angry”. He reached out and rested a hand on her cheek.

All the anger drained out of Rook and was immediately replaced with nervous energy. She giggled uneasily, “Yeah, that’s me, the angry Deputy”

John laughed, but Rook was praying for the Earth to open up and swallow her whole. John took a step closer, forcing to Rook to look up at him like he had earlier in the day. Confusion swept over her – there was no game to play now, no reason for him to take advantage of her feelings. She managed to stammer out a quiet “what’re you doing, John?” and his grin softened to a small smile, his blue eyes flashing with determination.

“Not all of it was for the game, Deputy”

Rook didn’t have time to question this, Johns lips were on hers before she could even process what was happening.

And then his arms snaked around her, pulling her closer, hauling every inch of her body against him, bare chest against barely covered chest. The champagne bottle slipped from her hands, landing in the sand with a soft thunk.

Rook took a few seconds to catch up, but when she realised what was going on, her arms snaked up along his chest to rest on his shoulders. John pulled back for a brief moment, and Rook squeaked when his arms slipped down her back, gripped her ass and hauled her up, and she wrapped her legs around his waist.

His lips were on hers again, hints of beer and barbeque sauce mixing with the champagne stain on her lips. John kissed her impatiently, as if he had been waiting for a long time to do it, teeth nipping at her bottom lip, before his tongue darted out and swept across it to ease the sting.

Rook groaned, her back arching involuntarily.

John and Rook froze as the crowd around them cheered, and Adelaide hollered “FINALLY”. Rook leaned back to look at them all, while John rested his head against her shoulder, but didn’t let her go.

“Oi, bugger off, nothing to see here at all”

The crowd laughed, and Rook glared as she watched Hudson dig into her purse and begrudgingly handed a few notes to Pratt, who was grinning and threw Rook a thumbs up. Rook considered asking a question, but John nuzzled her cheek and she turned her attention back to him, beaming down at him.

“this is a much better ending than the Top Gun ending”

Here’s a ridiculously easy business you can run from Facebook using Facebook groups. It won’t take you much time, and it can net you a tidy little profit each month.

Better still, you can create as many of these as you like. Grow them big enough, and you might make far more than $1,000 a month, too. Plus, you can either do it yourself, or outsource the work – it’s up to you.

Here’s how it works:

First, create a private Facebook group. This is going to be a free group, and you can do it for any niche where money is spent. For example, if you’re in the IM niche, you might title your group something like: - Shortcut copywriting techniques for non-copywriters - Easy and fast SEO for non-SEO people - Latest and hottest ways to get tons of traffic to your offer - Techniques for doubling and tripling your conversions - Simple methods for building massive emails lists fast - Etc. You can populate your groups with free WSO’s, from Facebook itself, as bonuses to other people’s products and so forth. You’re offering a tremendous benefit for free, so it’s not going to be difficult to get members to your groups. You might even limit the number of members you take, since that will make it seem much more exclusive and valuable.

For content you’re going to do one or more of the following:

- Write your own content - Hire outsourcers to write the content for you - Get guests to write your content for free - Use high-quality PLR. Not junk, just the good stuff Whatever content you use, be sure to break it down into brief daily posts. All you need is short snippets of content because the members will do the rest of the work for you. They’ll ask questions, respond to questions, give opinions, and so forth. Your group will take on a life of its own, which is terrific. You want to encourage as much interaction as possible to keep people coming back time and time again. So now the big question is… How do you monetize this?

There are three ways:

First, promote your own products. You’ve got to do this in a very soft, non-pushy way. Done right, you’ll make plenty of sales without turning anyone off. For example, you might answer someone’s question, then refer them to your product for even more info. Second, promote other people’s products (affiliate products) using the same method. Third, if you don’t want to sell products or you want to make even more money, you can sell advertising on the timeline. If you think about it, you’ve got a highly targeted group of people who are super focused on this one area of interest. Basically, you have a terrific prospect list of active, interested people. Whether you are selling your own products, affiliate products or advertising, you’re going to make money. Let’s talk more about getting advertisers. These advertisers would LOVE to convert your members to their deal.

It's important to limit your ads

Limit your ads to just one per day, and call them the “Sponsor of the Day.” Of course, advertisers can book as many days as they like. Post the ad in the morning and keep it as the pinned post for the rest of the day. Charge maybe $50 to display the ad for a day, which compares favorably to solo ads. If you sell all 30 days of the month, you’ve made $1,500. Only allow that one ad per day, and don’t let your members post affiliate links.

Now find advertisers

How do you find advertisers? Many times your best source will be from within the group itself. You can also let your email list know about the opportunity, and you can offer your ad slots to anyone who is in your niche and has a product to sell. I recommend starting one group and learning the in’s and out’s of running this type of business. You’ll need to invest perhaps 15 minutes each morning for adding content and answering questions, and then check back 3 or 4 times during the day. Once you get a good feel for what you’re doing, expand to related niches and even branch out to completely unrelated niches, too. And of course you can outsource the entire process.
