Borja had Grégoire on a string till 9/7 in the 4th...
 Gregoire Marche (Fra) 3-2 Borja Golan (Esp) 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5 (78m)
Tumblr media
Borja Golan is one I’m truly going to miss when he retires. Like Nick, James, Greg G, he is part of squash history. He made his career out of nowhere, trained on his own, and develop a very unorthodox squash that cause hell of troubles for so many along the years. He managed to improve his game, but one thing stays: his intensity/passion he has for the game
“We are very good friends, he is a great guy off court… well he is a great guy on court too but sometimes it’s a bit tricky” smiled Greg Marche today in his post match interview to the crowd who chuckled a bit... Borja is probably one of the most intense players on the tour. He hates himself when he makes an error, and don’t start him when the ref doesn’t go the way he should! Love him to bits… Today, he had Greg on a string for two and three quarters games. He gave the Frenchman a lesson in tactics, with a “Beng Hee” type of squash, redrop, perfect length and high lob. Greg was just visiting the four corners, with not a chance to have an kind of incidence on the match.
And Borja had him. He had Grégoire in the 4th, the Frenchman didn’t have solutions anymore, had to dig in every game to claw back score wise. Up 2/1 and 9-7, Borja had match won after an out of court shot from Greg that went with a “noooooooooooooo, what are you doing” in French… But out of nowhere, Borja who had kept the errors down to a strict minimum, hit the wall. Three unforced errors in a row plus a harsh no let (in my eyes anyway) and Grégoire is back in the match. Borja maybe got a bit tired in the 5th, quite logically as Greg made him do a heck of a lot of work. And now with his second wind, the Frenchman looked fresh as a rose, while Borja had lost his game plan and length completely. He managed to get the length back from 8/3, 5/8, but it was too late, as the Frenchman was now fully confident… 11/5 in the 5th for Grégoire…
 Greg
It’s always incredibly difficult to play against Borja. He’s got some deception shots that I don’t seem to be able to read, and I was truly struggling to see the ball, as his style of shots is so unorthodox. So beating him today – it’s the first time ever I manage to beat him – is a very good win, and I’m very happy I fought mentally today, especially as I seemed to take a bad start in each game but the 5th! I seemed to play too short, and as ever when I play him in PSA, with the pressure, I just do not seem to be able to see what he is doing. And if you feed him to the front, well, he is pretty good at killing you off! Every single game saw me really struggling at the start, and I had to claw back each game. I’m lucky that he made some errors finally at the end of the 4th, and again in the 5th, I’m happy I was able to take a good start, finally…
