Peeple App, “The Yelp” For Humans

This past week, talk about a new controversial app, dropping in November, has been circulating the Internet. The Peeple app is a new social media site that will allow anyone with a cellphone number to rate his or her coworkers, friends and lovers with a rating system identical to Yelp’s. From the platform’s description, It isn’t hard to image why the app is already being coined as a “cyberbully’s dream”. 

Though the app is stirring a lot of negative criticism, the company’s founders are sticking to their idea and claiming that they have not created an app for bullies. They are supporting their company’s vision, and defending it with the different criteria they have put in place in order for an individual to hold an account and review others.

How the app works: To create an account the user must be at least twenty-one years of age and have a Facebook profile. When posting on Peeple users must write their reviews under their real name, and in order to add a person to review, the user must have that person’s personal cellphone number. This ensures that the two (reviewer and the reviewed) are either socially or professionally connected. Peeple’s administrators will decide what stays and what goes depending on if abusive commentary is reported.

Other criticism deriving from the app is how marketers will choose to play on it. Peeple opens up a huge opportunity for brands to target needs that otherwise have been difficult, even with Facebook as a tool, to tap into. Creating one site that has a sole purpose of allowing people to share very personal reviews about others is a marketer’s dream. However, if the app does create the bullying platform that is anticipated, is it ethically acceptable to pray on these negative comments? Most of which should be handled in private, or not even said at all, and especially not projected for the entire world to see on social media. 

Peeple has the opportunity to be either very successful, or become too inappropriate that people and advertisers choose to steer clear for reputation purposes. If the company can prove that they are not providing a malice platform for bullies to (pathetically) unwind, they can become a positive site that creates positive networking benefits for users. The service can also become a great outlet for marketing research.
