What's an anarchist solution to mass shootings? I'm a baby anarchist and gun control is the only issue I'm unsure about.
this is a loaded topic that i will try to answer the best that i can.
addressing mass shootings from an anarchist perspective requires understanding the societal roots of such violence.
things like mass shootings often stem from a blend of white supremacy, patriarchal values, and social alienation, particularly evident in capitalist societies like the united states.
by dismantling oppressive hierarchies like these, we would aim to address the root causes of these violent acts, moving beyond mere symptom treatment like gun control.
central to any anarchist solution is the forming of strong, independent and supportive communities. by advocating for mutual aid and communal support, anarchism aims to reduce social alienation in a way that capitalism cannot. when individuals feel integrated and valued within their communities, the likelihood of them becoming violent decreases.
also, the fact that many mass shooters have histories of domestic violence or animal cruelty, but often lack criminal records, highlights the state's repeated failure in addressing violence. an anarchist approach would lean towards community-based justice and rehabilitation, focusing on preventing violence at its roots.
in educational and other public settings, factors like class discrimination, mental health neglect, and overwhelming stress contribute to mass shootings. anarchist solutions involve creating inclusive and supportive environments that address these issues.
while gun regulation might seem beneficial, gun control alone doesn't tackle the underlying motivations behind such violence. additionally, guns are so deeply embedded in cultures such as the u.s., that any attempts at a formative gun buy-back plan or anything of the ilk would leave weapons in the hands of those least likely to comply. not a great solution.
therefore, the focus should be on building a society where people are less likely to resort to violence, by understanding and alleviating the deeper causes that drive such actions.
that being said, i do not believe whatsoever in weapon fetishization. guns and weapons like them are tools whose use arises out of unfortunate circumstances, and i do not believe we should valorize their use.

CONSERVATIVE, OR BOURGEOIS, SOCIALISM A part of the bourgeoisie is desirous of redressing social grievances, in order to secure the continued existence of bourgeois society. To this section belong economists, philanthropists, humanitarians, improvers of the condition of the working class, organisers of charity, members of societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals, temperance fanatics, hole-and-corner reformers of every imaginable kind. ... The Socialistic bourgeois want all the advantages of modern social conditions without the struggles and dangers necessarily resulting therefrom. They desire the existing state of society minus its revolutionary and disintegrating elements. They wish for a bourgeoisie without a proletariat. The bourgeoisie naturally conceives the world in which it is supreme to be the best; and bourgeois Socialism develops this comfortable conception into various more or less complete systems. In requiring the proletariat to carry out such a system, and thereby to march straightway into the social New Jerusalem, it but requires in reality, that the proletariat should remain within the bounds of existing society, but should cast away all its hateful ideas concerning the bourgeoisie. A second and more practical, but less systematic, form of this Socialism sought to depreciate every revolutionary movement in the eyes of the working class, by showing that no mere political reform, but only a change in the material conditions of existence, in economic relations, could be of any advantage to them. By changes in the material conditions of existence, this form of Socialism, however, by no means understands abolition of the bourgeois relations of production, an abolition that can be effected only by a revolution, but administrative reforms, based on the continued existence of these relations; reforms, therefore, that in no respect affect the relations between capital and labour, but, at the best, lessen the cost, and simplify the administrative work, of bourgeois government. Bourgeois Socialism attains adequate expression, when, and only when, it becomes a mere figure of speech. Free trade: for the benefit of the working class. Protective duties: for the benefit of the working class. Prison Reform: for the benefit of the working class. This is the last word and the only seriously meant word of bourgeois Socialism. It is summed up in the phrase: the bourgeois is a bourgeois—for the benefit of the working class.

King Charles' first official portrait since his coronation has been vandalised by an animal rights group. June 11 2024
Le portrait officiel de Charles III dégradé par des militants animalistes Réalisé le mois dernier par l’artiste britannique Jonathan Yeo, ce portrait se trouve dans une galerie à Londres.
Tumblr media
» (« No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms ! »)

“Mare Is Maimed By Vicious Dogs,” Kingston Whig-Standard. November 2, 1932. page 9. --- Five Police Dogs With Mongrel Blood Revert to Wolf Ancestry --- (Special to The Whig-Standard) MONTREAL — Sentence of death was carried put on five dogs which bed the appearance of police dogs who had reverted to wolf ancestry and had maimed a a horse that was grazing near Cote St. Michael. The dogs had hunted in a pack apparently. They caught the mare belonging to Mrs. Mary Skoletni, 7171 Hugo Street, Cote St. Michael, and cut the animal's throat to ribbons with their fangs.
After the mare had fallen they chewed a huge piece from her thigh but she was still alive when a laborer coming to fetch her found her surrounded by the cogs. He ran away, fearing that the pack might go after him, too.
J. R. Innes, executive of the S. P. C. A., which investigated the affair, told of having ordered the killing of the mare after he had seen her because there was no chance of the animal's recovering.
He also told of the execution of the five dogs.
"We found them,” he said, "chained In the yard of Mrs. Marchetiere, 3271 Tenth Street, Cote St. Michael. They were huge dogs and the Marchetiere house was small and poor. I do not believe that they could have been fed properly."
Mr. Innes pointed out that it was unfair to say that the hunting pack consisted entirely of police dogs.
'Anyone seeing them would of course say they were,” he said. "But actually they had mongrel blood in them and were very much inbred too — quite a different animal from the genuine police dog."
Mrs. Skoletni says that the dogs killed and ate one of her goats last year. She is engaged In fanning acres of land and is very much worried because she had only on horse left and cannot do her fall mowing.

2. Conservative or Bourgeois Socialism
A part of the bourgeoisie is desirous of redressing social grievances in order to secure the continued existence of bourgeois society.
To this section belong economists, philanthropists, humanitarians, improvers of the condition of the working class, organisers of charity, members of societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals, temperance fanatics, hole-and-corner reformers of every imaginable kind. This form of socialism has, moreover, been worked out into complete systems.
We may cite Proudhon’s Philosophie de la Misère as an example of this form.
The Socialistic bourgeois want all the advantages of modern social conditions without the struggles and dangers necessarily resulting therefrom. They desire the existing state of society, minus its revolutionary and disintegrating elements.
A second, and more practical, but less systematic, form of this Socialism sought to depreciate every revolutionary movement in the eyes of the working class by showing that no mere political reform, but only a change in the material conditions of existence, in economical relations, could be of any advantage to them. By changes in the material conditions of existence, this form of Socialism, however, by no means understands abolition of the bourgeois relations of production, an abolition that can be affected only by a revolution, but administrative reforms, based on the continued existence of these relations; reforms, therefore, that in no respect affect the relations between capital and labour, but, at the best, lessen the cost, and simplify the administrative work, of bourgeois government.
Bourgeois Socialism attains adequate expression when, and only when, it becomes a mere figure of speech.
Free trade: for the benefit of the working class. Protective duties: for the benefit of the working class. Prison Reform: for the benefit of the working class. This is the last word and the only seriously meant word of bourgeois socialism.
It is summed up in the phrase: the bourgeois is a bourgeois – for the benefit of the working class.

A Rescue Within a Rescue: The Story of a Dog's Second Chance
In the heart of winter, a shivering and scared dog was found abandoned in the Avalon Dog Park. The dog was a rescue, previously adopted from a shelter with the promise of a forever home, but now left to fend for herself in the cold. But just when all hope seemed lost, a dog lover named Sarah came to her rescue. Sarah, a seasoned dog owner, had always had a soft spot for rescue dogs, and she…

Hey, uhm, about that „horse riding is harmful – but they need exercise!“ thread: what is never talked about in these discussions (this is my impression) is how priviliged it is that we can even abstain from using horses for transportation and farming.
And while our lifes have become much more comfortable since machines have replaced horses in these fields, I would argue that this shift has been very bad for nature as a whole. Even if someone does not believe in climate change, they could still see how it was bad that we built (and are building) asphalt streets and railroad tracks through wildlife habitats. And big machinery driving over soil compresses the earth unnecessarily, which makes it more difficult for plants to regrow. This would not be a problem if we still used horses.
I’m also wondering what people who are against horse owning would say to people who live in circumstances where they are still dependent on their animals. People who maybe live somewhere were the infrastructure needed in order to be able to use fossil fueled vehicles is not yet present. Or people who are just poor. Should they also stop riding and driving horses?
All of that being said, let’s imagine the consequences of gradually stopping all horse ownership. All horses currently living with humans as pets will stay with their owners and be cared for until they die, procreation will be prevented. (The alternative would of course be to release them into the wild, but deciding on WHERE to do so is very difficult and let’s just not do that in this scenario, as to not disturb already established ecosystems). Horse breeds which have been living with humans for the past thousands of years will go extinct. All the knowledge about how to feed horses, about horse behaviour and how to interact with them and about how to safely train them to be driven and ridden in a sustainable way will only exist in books within a hundred years. We are talking about skills that, at the end of the day, are more efficiently learned if there are teachers whom actually are practicing the craft. Humanity as a whole lives a bit more removed from nature – although, that is just how I see it.
I hope it’s okay for me to unload my thoughts on this onto you – I’m too shy to write under the post directly, but I really want to get this out of my head.
I live in germany by the way and I own a little pony mare. I don’t actually know her breed, it must have not been documented when she was born. She probably is a german riding pony with a healthy dose of arabian blood in her. I’ve riden and worked with horses for 14 years now and owned my mare for 5. I bought her when she was 11 years old and noone had really cared for her for two years. She spend that time on a pasture with other horses and was slightly malnourished and apathetic then. These days her fur is sparkling and her muscles have developed nicely and she expresses more happiness overall.
Hey, I don't know about the original poster as I don't follow them, but @acti-veg actually addresses your first point quite frequently. There are many people who cannot afford to not eat meat, abstain from medications that have been tested on animals, use horses for farming or transportation, etc. But the definition of veganism is, "a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” If a person cannot avoid some form of animal exploitation because of their health or inability to make an alternative living, this does not preclude them from being a vegan as long as they do their best to limit their reliance on animals in other areas.
I agree that industrialization has led to many advancements in society at the detriment of nature and biodiversity. But I would also point out that if people switched back to horses today, at our current population, that would also not be sustainable. There is not enough land to keep them properly without adding more to deforestation, and plowing with horses is less precise and worse for the soil than some up and coming alternatives, like laser weeding and using robotic seed planting, which can eliminate the need to plowing entirely.
You are right that if people stopped breeding horses many breeds would go extinct and knowledge in how to care for them would be lost. This is a downside that has to be balanced against the upsides, like no more halter horse monstrosities, no more horses being dumped & shipped to slaughter, and the potential for farmland to be re-wilded which would increase biodiversity.
It's totally ok to share your thoughts here, and your pony sounds super cute!
