Unification Church opens long-gestating events center in Las Vegas in 2015

Las Vegas Sun August 5, 2015 By Eli Segall
http://lasvegassun.com/news/2015/aug/05/world-unification-church-opens-long-gestating/
The Unification Church has built an events center in Las Vegas that it’s calling “America’s most heavenly place” and “a new beacon of hope,” years after buying the project site and changing plans a number of times — including scrapping a museum dedicated to its late founder, a self-proclaimed messiah.
The International Peace Education Center, across the street from McCarran International Airport, plans to hold a grand opening ceremony Aug. 10 and is aiming to host its first nonchurch-related events next month.
Church leaders held a ribbon-cutting and sanctification ceremony in late May.
The three-story, 93,000-square-foot facility — white, inside and out — will be run by an outside vendor, who hopes to lure local and out-of-town customers for conventions, training seminars, weddings and other gatherings.
Formerly called the Peace Palace, IPEC features white marble flooring, a 10,000-square-foot ballroom, conference rooms, a 5,000-square-foot foyer with a fountain and two grand staircases, and 49 hotel-style rooms for lodging, including a four-bedroom suite with private elevator access.
Church founder the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who died in 2012, launched the project in America’s gambling mecca and directed the site’s purchase, the church says. Known as “True Father” to followers — Moon hoped the facility “would change the reputation of Las Vegas from ‘Sin City’ to a city of educational enlightenment,” according to the church.
▲ A view of a double queen room in the International Peace Education Center (IPEC)
“True Father was filled with the vision to make Las Vegas known as a center of God’s love and truth, not as it is now — a city catering to the physical and selfish desires of human beings,” the church says.
Church leaders and IPEC operator Mike Fiorentino are entering a lucrative yet crowded industry. Las Vegas is one of the most popular places in America for meetings and conventions and has an abundance of event space. Almost 5.2 million convention delegates came to town last year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The valley has three of the 10 largest convention centers in the country, says Cvent, an events-industry software firm. The meetings business is clustered on and near the Strip, but Fiorentino figures that plays to his advantage. The founder of New York-based LNF Events, Fiorentino — not a member of the church — says he plans to target convention operators who want to leave the resort corridor for a day to hold events in an “intimate,” noncasino facility; visitors who want to be near Las Vegas Boulevard but not in the thick of it; and locals who want a place to hold a wedding, corporate event or other function.
At 6590 Bermuda Road, IPEC sits among clusters of warehouses and office buildings just south of the airport, a five-mile drive from the south edge of the resort corridor. As Fiorentino sees it, IPEC is detached from “the distractions that may happen over at the Strip.”
...
He recruited followers around the world, and the church became known for, among other things, mass weddings with tens of thousands of couples sometimes marrying at once. Moon also built a corporate empire, with real estate holdings, a gun manufacturing business, a ballet company, and newspapers and magazines.
The church is no stranger to Las Vegas. Over the past decade, it has held gatherings at the Aria, the Flamingo, Caesars Palace, the M Resort and other local venues.
It bought the IPEC site in 2011 for $11 million, Clark County records show. The church initially planned to develop a boat-manufacturing facility, Won Mo Boats, alongside a Peace Palace, but the boat plans fell through.
▲ The ballroom is shown in the International Peace Education Center
Clark County commissioners in March 2012 approved plans for a convention hall. The project had been expected to finish in early 2013.
But after Moon died in September 2012, “there was a need for a refocusing of the vision God had given to him for the Peace Palace,” Michael Jenkins, director of the church’s Office of Business Investment and Asset Development, told the Sun last spring.
The project underwent a redesign; the church hired new architects, engineers, interior designers and others, general contractor Steven Kwon said last year. At the time, Jenkins said the facility would host programs and workshops to “strengthen marriage and family” and “help build a safer and more wholesome community.” The building would also be available to outside groups, he said. Plans also called for a museum dedicated to Moon, whose name spawned the derisive nickname for church followers, the Moonies. Fiorentino, however, said the museum has been nixed. “A lot of the original stuff has changed,” he said.
Meanwhile, IPEC isn’t the only new stand-alone events space in the valley. The roughly 38,000-square-foot Venue Las Vegas — at Fremont and Eighth streets, on the cusp of downtown’s rowdy bar scene — can host proms, weddings and “any corporate request, from an executive retreat to a small conference to a themed, lavish company party,” its website says.
It also plans to have a “swanky lounge” called VirtueVice and space for a comedy club, both on the ground floor, and a rooftop bar and lounge above the second floor.
The Venue is scheduled to hold its first event Aug. 16, said Laura Coronado, spokeswoman for operator the Venues Group.

Announcing the Winners of the 2021 Tech Edvocate Awards
Every day, technology innovations transform the way people learn and how educators teach. In the last few years, the edtech field has attracted a lot of talented people, all with excellent knowledge bases and ideas. Though the edtech industry has been around for a few decades now, the last few years, in particular, have seen a surge in investment from both school districts and investors.
The education market is currently worth around $5 trillion globally, and it is forecasted that edtech investment alone will reach $300 billion by the year 2025. This growing investment into edtech start-ups has created some exciting changes in the world of education. Naturally, with increasing capital, the number of edtech companies, products, and thought leaders is also growing. In that spirit of change and innovation, we present the 5th Annual Tech Edvocate Awards.
After 4 months of hard work, we’ve narrowed down the year’s top edtech companies, products, people and more. We solicited nominees from readers in June/July and held online voting from May 1, 2021 – July 31, 2021. The nominee’s performance during the online voting period was used to gauge their popularity, but in no way signaled that they would become a finalist or walk away with an award. The finalists and winners were ultimately selected by a panel comprised of two edtech thought leaders, two PreK-12 teachers, one college professor, two K-12 administrators, one college administrator and two PreK-12 parents. Here are our winners and finalists for 2021. Winners and finalists can access their award seals by clicking here.

“A place where horses can heal”
Mission Statement
Our goal is to provide a safety net for severely neglected and/or abused horses, which after veterinary care, nursing, treatment, and management, can eventually return to living as healthy, active horses. This will be accomplished in a number of ways:
A state of the art treatment facility with an eight stall barn and several outside corrals, two round rings and turnout area.
Medical equipment to assess the health and condition of each horse and monitor its recovery.
A foster care network to house healthy horses until they can be adopted.
An adoption program designed to ensure each healthy animal will be well cared for the rest of its life.

The History of Mountain Meadow Equine Rescue & Rehab
Mountain Meadow Equine Rescue & Rehab Center, while a newcomer to the horse rescue community, comes from a long history of saving animals from neglect and abandonment. It started as the Animal Trust Foundation which was founded May 16, 1973 by Patrica Woodbridge Nelson. Originally named the Animal Trust Sanctuary, the foundation owned a five acre ranch in Ramona, California, where Ms. Nelson established and maintained a rescue center for dogs and cats. Years later the ranch was donated to Fund for Animals, a New York animal rescue of which Cleveland Amory was the head. The Animal Trust Sanctuary changed its name to Animal Trust Foundation (ATF) and continued in the ensuing years to donate funds to many local animal welfare and rescue organizations. It was in November, 2014 that the decision was made to create an offshoot from the Foundation designed to rescue and care for injured and starving horses. Thus Mountain Meadow Equine Rescue came into being.

Substantial investment was made in creating a state of the art care facility, including an eight stall steel barn, weight scale, and medical equipment. There are also six outside corrals with a half-acre paddock. As we grow there is room to expand to about double our current capacity. Being limited in space to about four acres, we focus on horses with urgent medical issues in the need of long term (six to twelve months) care, rather than warehousing abandoned animals. There are many rescues in San Diego County doing a great job in taking care of these orphaned horses and they deserve all the praise they receive. Our doors are open to any organization which may find itself overly burdened by the health care requirements of some horses with special needs. Additionally, equine veterinarians occasionally encounter an injured horse which requires long term care and which the owner cannot afford to address. In these circumstances, often the unfortunate choice is made to euthanize the animal solely because of the unbearable cost placed on the owner. These are our patients.

ATF continues to operate as it always has, contributing to the support of welfare and rescue organizations under the direction of Anthony Clark, one of the original founders. The former president, Douglas Stoodt, became and continues to be the CEO and Director of Mountain Meadow Equine Rescue.

Aptiv’s self-driving cars have given 100,000 paid rides on the Lyft app
What started out as a temporary pilot project to test a robotaxi service in Las Vegas has turned into a multi-year partnership between self-driving software company Aptiv and Lyft and a new milestone that suggests the operation is ramping up.
The companies announced Tuesday that they’ve given 100,000 paid rides in Aptiv’s self-driving vehicles via the Lyft app.
“To our knowledge this is the largest open-to-the-public commercial pilot,” Aptiv Autonomous Mobility President Karl Iagnemma said in a recent interview. “To me this partnership is a great example of the next-generation ecosystem at work.”
The milestone has a few important caveats. Aptiv’s self-driving vehicles — which initially began with BMW 5 series — have a human safety driver behind the wheel to take over if needed. The human driver operates the vehicle manually in parking lots and hotel lobby areas.
The program, even if with those human safety drivers behind the wheel, has proven invaluable to the companies, according to Iagnemma and Jody Kelman, who leads the self-driving platform team at Lyft.
“We’ve got something here,” Kelman said. “This is really a blueprint for what future mobility partnerships can look like.”
Companies in this so-called “race” to commercially deploy on-demand ride-hailing services using self-driving vehicles must master more than the technical bits. Fleet management, real-time routing, and designing an approachable user interface are just a few critical components needed to operate a profitable robotaxi service.
The program has taught Aptiv how to “get and keep a fleet of autonomous vehicles on the road and keep them highly utilized,” Iagnemma said, later adding that this project positions Lyft and Aptiv to be major winners in this space. The companies also learned how to work with various regulatory bodies, in this case, with the city of Las Vegas, Clark County and the region’s transit authority.
Lyft and Aptiv first launched the pilot in January 2018 as a one-week experiment and then announced plans to extend the program. The program surpassed 5,000 self-driving rides by August and jumped to more than 25,000 paid autonomous rides by December 2018, all while maintaining an average passenger rating of 4.95 out of five stars, Aptiv said at the time.
By May 2019, the companies reported they had given more than 50,000 paid self-driving rides in Las Vegas.
Aptiv’s investment in Las Vegas expanded as those ridership numbers grew. The company opened in December 2018 a 130,000-square-foot technical center in the city to house its fleet of autonomous vehicles as well as an engineering team dedicated to research and development of software and hardware systems, validation and mapping.

Picture This: Visualizing Southern Architecture in Story Maps https://ift.tt/2KGDIP0 by Kristi Finefield
Visual materials, such as photos, not only depict a place, but can also provide a deeper understanding of that place. While a single photo offers a single moment in the timeline of a place’s history, a group of photos of a larger region can suggest a much broader story, influenced by the connections between places and their history. Recently, I was given the opportunity to use Story Maps to explore this idea with a collection in the Prints and Photographs Division.
Title screen of Surveying the South. Photo featured: Pinckney Chambers House, Elmwood, Iredell County, North Carolina. Photo by Frances Benjamin Johnston, 1938. https://ift.tt/2MAGY0t
Developed by ESRI, a producer of Geographic Information System (GIS) software, Story Maps is used to develop interactive web applications, with the option for a mapping component. For my project, I turned to the work of photographer of Frances Benjamin Johnston, and her Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South (CSAS), a collection of just over 7,000 photos taken primarily in the 1930s. These photos provide a snapshot, if you will, of a specific era and region. They also tell us a lot about what came before, and about how the places of the American South had evolved to that point.
The CSAS photographs have been fully digitized and available online through the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog for ten years, so this was an opportunity to potentially expose them to a new audience, to unlock new insights and to encourage new stories. The resulting project, Surveying the South, is available for exploration on the Library of Congress website.
The story of CSAS is a compelling narrative, with the formidable Ms. Johnston as the main character as she takes on a challenging project of traveling over the highways and byways of the American South taking photographs. Her photos offer multiple insights, among them the story of the region as well as of the craftsmen, builders and architects who created the buildings that populated the South. The 1938 photo below, for example, offered a detailed view of the circa 1780 brickwork used in the Somers House of Gibsonville, North Carolina.
Somers house, Gibsonville, Guilford County, North Carolina. Photo by Frances Benjamin Johnston, 1938. https://ift.tt/2OW0gP7
Johnston also was driven by an urgency to capture some of these structures to make sure they were not lost to history. No structure was too grand or too humble to make it onto Johnston’s wish list. In the two photos below, Johnston documented both the large plantation home of Belle Grove in Iberville Parish, Louisiana and slave quarters in Clarke County, Virginia. Both were falling into ruin, and both types of structures were key to the narrative of the American South and needed to be preserved, even if just on film. Describing the disparity between the two in words is hardly as effective as seeing it in these photos.

Ruined Slave Quarters, Berryville vic., Clarke County, Virginia. Photo by Frances Benjamin Johnston, between 1930 and 1939. https://ift.tt/2Mwl3qS
I used Surveying the South to highlight these photos, to make more prominent the extensive subject-based cataloging available and to share a bit of Johnson’s thoughts on the project and how she went about undertaking it. I also took the valuable location-based content in the existing catalog records and took advantage of the mapping component in Story Maps to present CSAS in a way we had not seen before – as an interactive map.
Interactive map in Surveying the South, found in “Places” section. From title screen, scroll down until top navigation bar appears, and select “Places,” indicated by arrow at top right.
The value of a map for showing the scope of a collection like this cannot be overstated. Suddenly, I can see facts I already knew in a much more immediate and visual way: the varying size of the circles drive home the point that there are many photos of Virginia and comparatively very few of Alabama. The size of the circles on the map gives an idea of number of photos taken in various towns and cities. We can see both what is there – and what is not. Tennessee and Arkansas never made it into the project, for example. We get a much clearer picture of the architecture of Virginia and Maryland, near where Johnston lived, than of other areas, which impacts how a researcher might approach this collection. The map is interactive, and clicking on any one circle provides a pop-up window with the location and number of photos Johnston took there. Below is an example of a pop-up window and the resulting photos.
Detail of interactive map in Surveying the South. Pop-up text reads: In Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina, Frances Benjamin Johnston took 34 photos.

Feel free to take your own journey into the American South as it looked in the 1930s, dotted with remnants of its history, through Johnston’s photos and the interactive map!
