NuWho Zine: Character Tracker 👀👯

Hi everyone!

I decided to put my nerd cap on today and, as I was putting together some things for the zine, decided to look into what kind of works we have so far. I thought I'd share with you all, so I hope you enjoy!!

1. General Stats

We so far have 29 works lined up: 15 fan arts (52%), 10 fanfictions (34%) and 4 works of written non-fiction (this may be analysis, essays, etc) (14%). This feels like a nice balance for me, and I'd be pretty happy if this is the balance of different types of works ae have for the final zine.

Pretty much all of these are character-focused, so here are some pretty graphs for you all:

(2) Character Breakdown

So, as you can see, Nine, Ten and Twelve are the ones who are coming in the strongest. However, in terms of companions, the Ponds are winning by far! This may be because, after the initial submissions, there weren't any Ponds pieces and some people who didn't have a concrete idea yet decided to feature them; they mostly feature them together, though - we don't have many/any pieces of Amy or Rory (or River) solo.

Most pieces feature two or more chracters. So far, the only character centric pieces I have jotted down are for Clara, Twelve, Fifteen (maybe), and the Master.

(3) What This Means

Like promised, in July I will open a form for submissions. I strongly encourage people who want to participate to start thinking about what they'd like to do, because you'll have to provide that when signing up. I'm counting on accepting about 15-20 people/pieces and, since this isn't a submissions-based zine, these will be first come, first serve.

I really want all works to be artist-led, ie, you get to draw/write/whatever whatever it is you desire. However, I would also like the zine to be somewhat balanced in terms of character representations, so in the name of compromise, please keep that in mind!! Here are some ideas for pieces:

Pieces focusing on a single character, especially those that have less submissions;

Episodes/seasons/story arc analysis or commentaries;

Analysis of specific aspects of NuWho;

Personal essays (for example, focusing on an aspect of Doctor Who you love, how you got into it, etc);

Fanarts that are episode-focused (in particular, I'd really love a piece about the 50th and/or the 60th anniversaries, since they were such big fandom events);

Non-character-centric pieces: pieces focusing on the TARDIS, or DW monsters, or planets, or the Time War, or regeneration - other aspects of the DW universe in general beyond the characters.

I'll also be open to one or two pieces that focus on NuWho spin-offs rather than NuWho itself, since I do consider them part of the over-arching NuWho Universe (looking at you, Torchwood girlies!!!).

In terms of characters, we're really missing Thirteen-era pieces and I know the 13 fans are out there, so this is your chance!! We're also with low numbers of Jack, specific Masters (most Master pieces are about the character in general, not focused on a specific Master), Bill, River, and 11-Era Clara.

I also really encourage people to submit pieces about minor characters: give me the Tylers/Joneses/Nobles/Sundays family portraits! Give me Mickey, or Ten's one-offs, or Jenny, or Alonso! Give me Jenny, Vastra and Strax! Give me the Moment, War Doctor, Fugitive Doctor! Give me Nardole, Rogue, Wilfred, Rose Noble, Lady Me, or whoever else I am missing here that you love and want to feature!

Finally, I also have two artists who would like to establish a colab: in particular, I'm looking for a writer that feels comfortable writing various characters of NuWho (but 13 and Yaz in particular), and an artist who loves Rose and Tentoo. If that is you, feel free to reach out whenever so that we can talk (no need go wait for July!!)

I am so heavy on this and stand on this of my opinion of the ship Eleteo. I am SOOOOO tired of seeing fics/fanart of Mateo being Elena’s saviour when it fact IT SHOULD BE THE OPPOSITE. Elena carries heavy amounts of 💪💪FEMININE💪💪 energy, and seeing that twink be her saviour in some aus is just…ugh. Like if Elena were to be in a relationship with a man, she’d be the “MAN” of that relationship. Like, did you SEE her carrying Gabe bridal style?! Or when she was dancing with Prince Alonso, LITERALLY SWEPT HIM OFF HIS FEET AND PUT A FLOWER IN HIS HAIR.

Picture this, Elena and Mateo getting married, who would be absolutely slaying that wedding gown? MATEO. LIKE…CMON NOW. I can picture Elena sweeping him off of his feet and carrying him away to live happily ever after. (Shes the prince basically 💀) Whos that knight in shining armour coming to rescue the princess from the loathsome dragon? ITS ELENA. Mateo is the princess. Whos coming home after a long nine-to-five? ELENA. Mateo is the house wife /j

Like I just wanna see more cis couple tropes where the WOMAN is in charge. that trope honestly makes me actually like the cis ships.

Favourite Version Exclusive Cars 2 Racer: Long Ge

I was going for Fernando Alonso since I think he's my favourite in terms of design, but Long Ge has become my favourite thanks to a few fanarts about him on pixiv, one in particular portraying him as a human with some kind of katana (I'm pretty sure it wasn't a katana since he's Chinese, but I don't know how traditional Chinese swords are called 😅), so I thought about drawing him holding a sword inspired by that fanart 😁

Also, it seems that he's the only version exclusive racer that isn't based on a real life racer 🤔

Which specifically? I will just give brief opinion about some that I know.

Webbonso : ❤️MY DADS❤️ They have all the tropes I love, old man yaoi, friends to lover, black cat x orange cat (war criminal), etc

Strollonso : My #2 ship in general,my first F1 ship so they have special place in my heart. I love how Alonso treat Lance and the way Lance respects Alonso.

Buttonso : I ship them, both basically match each other freak. The McLaren honda era of them is abysmal, but at least they make it bearable.

Ferwis : They're growing on me! Quiet literally the only old man yaoi of the current grid. I wish to be sandwiched-WHO SAID THAT

Fisinando : They're cute but I need to deep diver to their history before I can form proper opinion.

Vettonso : No opinion, I rarely see their content to begin with both as fanart or irl comparing to others.

The Ministry didn’t really know what to do with her other than “she knows time travel exists, we can’t let her go” but they soon found out she had an incredible aiming so she became the soldier of the patrol

She’s bff’s with Alonso (she’s actually the one that gave him his cat, but don’t let Pacino find out) and adores Velázquez (she’s currently trying to get him to make some Alpacino fanart but Diego keeps refusing [because he low-key ships Alonso and Amelia]). Her relationship with Javier is kinda complicated because they’re friends but from time to time he remembers her “dark past” as he calls it and gets horrified for a while, but they mostly get along.

She doesn’t really know what her sexuality is and doesn’t like labels either. She believes that everyone has the potential to be at least bisexual because “you fall in love with a person, not with their gender” (her words). He has kind of a crush on Alonso?? She doesn’t know but her stomach goes woooooosh everytime she sees him (Javier teases her endlessly about it) and opposed to that, she’s so damn ready to hit Spínola with a chair at any moment.

She’s the second child of a family of three and gets mostly ignored which gives her the time to sneak out to the Ministry without anyone asking too many questions, and her dad has a cat that mysteriously got pregnant so now they have a bunch of kittens (that’s where Alonso’s cat came from!!).

Sooooo I did go to the Villainous conference and it was AMAZING, I met Alan and the crew and they were sooooo coool, there are so many things coming guys but right now i have to take a bus home so ill tell you tomorrow as soon as i can People were asking Alan about ships hahaha i did record that moment, and he showed us some fanart because he says he loves it, but he also talked about the future of the show and other stuff I also just met Dana Terrace and Jhonen Vasquez and Jenny Goldberg and Alonso Ramírez Ramos and so many incredibly amazing and cool artists and internet friends like @annaxolotl wich was AWESOME Its been a wild ride One of the best weeks ever
