Sing is literally a piece of genius. They made a bad pop song with simple but very direct lyrics, the kind of thing that would get itself on teen choice awards and glee and pop radio stations but still very clearly get their point across. an infiltration of mainstream culture. using the very thing they were critiquing, mainstream media, as a platform to spread the message to a larger audience who hadn’t been exposed to that kind of thinking yet. the people who really needed to hear it, who were the people who wouldn’t have paid attention to the same message being conveyed in the same style as their music on the black parade or earlier, the people, specifically younger people still trying to find a place in the world, who would have been consuming exclusively mainstream pop. popular tv shows, teen pop culture award shows, pop radio, etc all spreading the words “they’re gonna sell what tomorrow means” “raise your voice every single time they try to shut your mouth” “cleaned up, corporation progress, dying in the process” “I am not the singer that you wanted but a dancer, I refuse to answer” “wrote it for the ones who want to get away - keep running”
sing accomplished exactly what it was created for, it was executed perfectly in that regard

Something about how the last time Gerard was this public (with the exception of umbrella academy stuff) they were giving a speech almost every night about how far societal acceptance of trans people had come and how happy it made them, giving shout outs to the trans people in the audience, saying things like “I used to feel like I was wearing a costume. I don’t feel like that so much anymore”. He posted on Twitter that he uses he/they pronouns and that he had been doing a lot of research on transgenderism and that it was a very healing process. He was openly discussing gender identity struggles in interviews and Q&As, saying that growing up they didn’t really relate to other boys, that when they discovered the concept of being transgender they considered themself to be more of a woman, recommending that people figuring out the same things see a therapist that specializes in gender identity. However also making it clear that he did not have everything figured out yet and because of this was not yet comfortable publicly discussing his gender past a certain extent.
Something about how this is kind of the first time he’s in the public eye so much since then and how they have been so outwardly, unashamedly androgynous/feminine. How this is the first time we’ve seen them in years and how the last time we saw them we know they were figuring out a lot of things in terms of gender and now this is the most publicly feminine they have ever been.

I refuse to believe gerard way is all one person. there is no way the lady dancing around in miniskirts and heels completely confident on stage is the same person as the comic author with hair past their shoulders and facial scruff, kinda quiet and awkward in interviews like they had never been in front of a camera before. that they’re the same person as the emo rockstar who performed in full faces of heavy makeup and would stick his hand down his black skinny jeans with rips in questionable places in front of everyone, surrounded by pyrotechnics, the same person as the disgusting goth girl who lived in a tour van packed in with bandmates and instruments and showered maybe once every three or four months. no way.

Okay but see the thing none of this recent femininity is new, at least not for Gerard. Gerard had been gender nonconforming since it was first made an option to them. This is the Gerard who stole his mom’s lipstick as a teenager and liked how it looked but also felt kinda guilty about it. This is the Gerard who, in university, would go out in public in feminine clothing with the intent of being perceived as a woman. Gerard has been gnc since long before they were in the public eye. If anything, he toned it down for the public, once he was being paid attention to worldwide. What’s different about right now isn’t that Gerard is being explicitly feminine for the first time, we know that they’ve been doing this since their teens. What’s different about this time is that he’s letting us see. He’s not toning it down or making it palatable in a way that will sell records. He’s showing us the pure unfiltered femininity that has been here this whole time but has never actually made it into the public.

the thing is early sunsets over monroeville is, yes it’s about dawn of the dead but only to the same extent bury me in black is about scream or vampires will never hurt you is about vampires. the thing about all of those songs is gerard was like 25 and using songwriting to cope with mental illness and was obsessed with horror movies and horror imagery and used those things as a device to write about things like depression, identity issues, alcoholism. the thing is zombie apocalypse movies don’t induce so much emotion in a person’s voice that over half the band starts crying or has to leave the room while they record the vocals, that they receive hugs from everyone there when they finish. the thing is does anyone notice? does anyone care? and if I had the guts to put this to your head, would anything matter if you’re already dead? is not about zombies.
