It's now a CRIME for Thai students to wear short skirts
In the latest bid to save girls from sexual violence by blaming their attire, amendments to the Child Protection Act pushed by the Education Ministry have made it illegal for students to dress “inappropriately.”
What had been left to school administrators to obsess over skirt lengths and blouse tightness has now been codified into law.
Though the specific legal language published Friday was vague, the amendment seems to only target female students, who are routinely admonished for pushing – or outright ignoring – dress-code boundaries.
It was the first amendment to the part of the act detailing “appropriate student behavior,” introduced in 2005.
The revision, signed by newly appointed Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan, makes the culturally rooted argument that enforcement will improve the behavior and safety of students. No specific incidents were cited to justify the move.

And it was unclear if or how the new law would be enforced with male students. Several calls to the Education Ministry’s public relations office for additional information went unanswered.
The amended section also prohibits students from joining groups or gangs that disturb the peace, and causing a “public commotion” outside school or dormitory grounds.
Though no specific penalties were laid out for slipping on short skirts, the Child Protect Act calls for parents or guardians “inducing, encouraging, assisting or supporting” a student who breaks regulations are liable to fines of up to THB30,000 (US$980) and/or three months jail time.
Reactions to the law appeared mixed online, largely between those who think “kids need more rules” and those interested in effective public policy, with the latter saying they will be ineffective and, worse, oppressive.

“I really like this amendment. I want everyone to abide by the regulations so these problems can decrease,” Facebook user Calla N Lilly wrote Saturday of the law.
Pimnara P Major said it was the latest example of solving the wrong social problems.
“Instead of teaching students how to live by educating them about social sciences and the rights they have, why are you making a deal out of their school uniforms?” Pimnara wrote.
Universities tend to have strict dress codes that are flouted by a portion of the student body, despite frequent awareness campaigns and half-hearted enforcement efforts.
While first-year girls tend to wear the prescribed ankle-length skirts, many wear them increasingly shorter as they advance through their programs.
Thailand could also consider changing schoolgirl uniforms, which by entirely subjective measures, are considered the most fetish-tastic and sexually charged in the world. Even the reliably kinky Japanese think so – they voted them world’s sexiest in 2011.

Still, socially conservative Thailand has a deep tradition of slut-shaming and victim-blaming when it comes to violence against women.
Soon after he seized power in 2014, Prayuth Chan-ocha, now prime minister, famously told people women in bikinis may not be safe – unless they’re ugly, after two British holiday-makers were murdered on Koh Tao.
The very notion of consent is not ingrained in society, fueling attitudes that women are to blame for enticing attackers with their fashion choices.
Those attitudes haven’t let up post-#MeToo, either.

Artista español reflejó el mundo gay de Bangkok en una exposición
España.- Hombres LGBT en el tren elevado o junto a un tuktuk (mototaxi) en una calle llena de carteles de neón son algunas de las escenas retratadas en la exposición Our World (Nuestro Mundo) que el artista español Dani Monfort, realizó en Bangkok.
“Pude haberme centrado en pintar templos, mercados o festivales, pero elegí representar la Bangkok gay porque forma parte de mi vida y creo que puedo reflejarlo tal y como es”, señaló Monfort en una entrevista con la agencia de noticias Efe.
La muestra, que será exhibida en la galería Serindia de la capital tailandesa hasta el 30 de abril, incluye 17 cuadros de intensos colores y una estética parecida al cómic, que el artista consigue al pintar con esmalte sobre acrílico.
“Yo provengo del mundo del diseño gráfico, soy gran admirador de los antiguos carteles modernistas. Este tipo de arte ha influido en gran medida mi manera de tratar el color plano”, precisó el artista nacido en Barcelona en el año 1974.
“Mis cuadros son pinturas tratadas como ilustraciones y las suelo pintar en cristal o en acrílico siguiendo la técnica antigua que personalmente descubrí en mis paseos por las calles de Barcelona”, según añadió Monfort.
El artista utilizó colores brillantes para reflejar la “viveza de la ciudad” mientras que los títulos de las obras expuestas fueron tituladas con nombres de canciones pop como Oops!… I Did it Again, de Britney Spears; Diva, de Dana International; No Selfie Control, de Cazwell; Celebration, de Madonna, o I Want a Bear, de DaddyB.
Al hablar de la obra It’s Raining Men, dijo que muestra a varios chicos que juegan con sus pistolas de agua en el popular festival del Songkran, que se celebra en el mes de abril, y Call Me hace referencia a las aplicaciones de móvil para conseguir pareja.

It's now a CRIME for Thai students to wear short skirts
In the latest bid to save girls from sexual violence by blaming their attire, amendments to the Child Protection Act pushed by the Education Ministry have made it illegal for students to dress “inappropriately.”
What had been left to school administrators to obsess over skirt lengths and blouse tightness has now been codified into law.
Though the specific legal language published Friday was vague, the amendment seems to only target female students, who are routinely admonished for pushing – or outright ignoring – dress-code boundaries.
It was the first amendment to the part of the act detailing “appropriate student behavior,” introduced in 2005.
The revision, signed by newly appointed Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan, makes the culturally rooted argument that enforcement will improve the behavior and safety of students. No specific incidents were cited to justify the move.

And it was unclear if or how the new law would be enforced with male students. Several calls to the Education Ministry’s public relations office for additional information went unanswered.
The amended section also prohibits students from joining groups or gangs that disturb the peace, and causing a “public commotion” outside school or dormitory grounds.
Though no specific penalties were laid out for slipping on short skirts, the Child Protect Act calls for parents or guardians “inducing, encouraging, assisting or supporting” a student who breaks regulations are liable to fines of up to THB30,000 (US$980) and/or three months jail time.
Reactions to the law appeared mixed online, largely between those who think “kids need more rules” and those interested in effective public policy, with the latter saying they will be ineffective and, worse, oppressive.

While first-year girls tend to wear the prescribed ankle-length skirts, many wear them increasingly shorter as they advance through their programs.
Thailand could also consider changing schoolgirl uniforms, which by entirely subjective measures, are considered the most fetish-tastic and sexually charged in the world. Even the reliably kinky Japanese think so – they voted them world’s sexiest in 2011.

It’s mountainous, tropical, rural, urban, populous, remote, affordable, expensive, naturally stunning and architecturally beautiful…all at once! I first visited Asia in 2005 when I traveled to India. I immediately overwhelmed by new sights, smells, tastes and sounds. And I also immediately in love with Asia. I traveled to Cambodia in 2009. And then in 2014, my husband and I began to consider a move to Asia, so we started traveling around the continent. We visited about 9 countries in 6 months. We moved to Indonesia in 2015, and it’s been home ever since. I’ve had the great privilege of seeing even more of Asia since living here, so I thought I’d share my top 10 list of places I’ve visited in Asia (so far!) Northern Thailand is delightful, and Chiang Mai is the major city in the region. It’s full of Buddhist temples and delicious street food. We spent 2 months in Chiang Mai in 2014, and even got to celebrate Songkran, the Thai New Year complete with giant water fight! We visited the mountains and rode elephants. It was a beautiful experience and Chiang Mai will always hold a special place in my heart.

I’m not sure how I first became fascinated by Nepal. But I’d wanted to go for years. So being able to set foot in Kathmandu in 2014 was amazing. This tiny country sandwiched between mega China and mega India manages to maintain an identity all it’s own. We visited just months before the massive earthquake that devastated many parts of the city and countless lives were lost. I can’t imagine the extent of the impact on the beautiful people & culture of Kathmandu. Given the chance, I would surely return!

#8 Angkor Wat, Cambodia
I first traveled to the majestic ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia back in 2009. And then again in 2014. I will never stop being amazed by the scale, scope and wonder of it all. The temple complex is massive, unable to take in during just one day. Angkor Wat almost demands multiple visits. We were able to catch a sunrise at the iconic tiered tower temple, and it was magical.

#7 Shanghai, China
I was surprised by Shanghai. I had previously traveled through other large [and smaller] cities in China, and wasn’t sure how I would feel about Shanghai. But it was a beautiful city. We were blessed with stunning blue skies when we visited, which I recognize is pretty rare around cities in China. We walked the ancient streets, traveled to the top of the ultra modern Shanghai Tower, enjoyed the view of the river, and ate delicious dumplings. Shanghai is probably my favorite city in China, and would love to go back for a longer stay!

#6 Golden Triangle, Thailand
I love absolutely this northern corner of Thailand that borders Myanmar & Laos. The beautiful Mekong River runs right through here. The towns are small, but the culture is rich. We spent a few weeks here, traveling through villages and crossing the borders of neighboring countries. Recently, this area has been all over the news with the soccer boys trapped in the cave. My heart was filled with joy as they were rescued. As I read & watched the coverage, I was transported back to this place. I simply adore this area of Thailand!

#5 Lombok, Indonesia
This stunning tropical island often gets overlooked by the fame of Bali to the west. But Lombok is just as beautiful, and much less of a tourist hotspot. I’ve been here a couple of times, and every time I am captivated by a new aspect of this stunning island. Climb a volcano, discover gorgeous waterfalls, enjoy pristine beaches, eat delicious food and meet incredible people. That’s Lombok.

What a naturally stunning place on this planet. The limestone mountains of HaLong Bay are breathtaking to behold. Sure, it’s touristy. Sure, some parts have been overrun with the tourist industry. But even with all that, HaLong Bay is worth the trip. There’s so many ways to do HaLong Bay that you can find one that suits your travel style. Whether it’s cruising in luxury or rock climbing adventures, you can take it the views of the Bay. I’ve been here twice, and soaked in all the natural beauty to behold. And as many times as I can, I will go back to HaLong Bay.

This city nation is unlike anywhere else in Asia. It has such a cool blend of East meets West. The food you can find in Singapore is simply fabulous. It’s a cross cultural experience to dine in the famous hawker centers of the city. If you love any type of Asian food, you can find it in Singapore. From excellent shopping to incredible skylines, Singapore is not to be missed. I love wandering the city streets and admiring the stunning architecture. I’ve been to Singapore a few times, and each time I love it more!

When I first visited Vietnam, I was skeptical. I didn’t know much about it, and had set my expectations pretty low. But every part of Vietnam surprised me…in the best way possible! The food was delicious! The architecture was unique and creative! The culture & people were beautiful. Especially Hanoi. This city just stole my heart. It’s a street photographer’s dream. It’s one of the most affordable places in all of Asia that we’ve visited. I’ve been twice, and would love to return!

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Bali is my number one favorite place in all of Asia. We’ve called it home for over 3 years now. On the surface, Bali can look like the ultimate getaway. It has the reputation of escapism. But for me, it’s where I’ve put down roots. I’ve learned the language. I’m constantly learning the culture. I’m getting to know the people. I’m here to do life with them. I’ve been to their weddings, funerals, birthday parties and tooth filing ceremonies. The Balinese people are simply lovely. To only see the tourist destinations in Bali is to miss so much of what the island has to offer. Get off the beaten path. Ask locals for recommendations of what to see and do. Drink coffee together. Take selfies together. Experience one of the most beautiful places on our planet, both in nature and in people.

A Nationwide Water Fight-- SongKran 2014!
Happy Thai New Year! In Thai culture, the new year is celebrated as a water festival, as water in the purest substance and it cleanses and gives life. Originally, SongKran was celebrated by respectfully and lightly pouring water on Buddhas and elders, but in modern day, it has escalated to a free for all watergun fight on all the city streets. Anyone you ask will tell you the best place to participate in the festivities is Chiang Mai. Some families (like my hosts) have grown tired of getting soaked on the daily during this festival and decide to pack up for a vacation outside the country, and since my hosts had a connecting flight through Chiang Mai on their way to China, they decided to let me and my friend Bertille fly with them and stay with another Rotary host and experience SongKran to the fullest.
When we arrived in Chiang Mai at dinnertime on the eleventh, people were already armed with buckets of water and threatening to throw, even though the official start of the festival wasn't until the thirteenth! We thankfully avoided getting splashed that night as we went to dinner, but the next day was a completely different story.
We got up at eight in hopes of walking around the city and exploring before the true water fight started, but it was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and we were happy to discover that Chiang Mai was in full-on SongKran mode a day early. We explored the old city (and got a delicious smoothie) while getting covered in water all day. We ran into some Rotary students from the Chiang Mai district and they showed us the best place to enjoy the water-- the ThaPae gate of the Old City, where Air Asia set up huge speakers and misters and everyone was dancing and splashing around together. It was honestly like no other holiday I've ever seen. Everyone was participating, from toddlers to grandmas, and there was no point in even trying to stay dry. The kid in everyone came out and I felt like a little kid playing in the sprinklers in my backyard, except this time, a whole city of people were playing with me. Sorry for the lack of waterfight pictures-- I was happy to experience the fun firsthand rather than try and take pictures with my camera through a plastic bag!
At night, it got cloudy and cold, and we went back to our hosts place on the early side to get dry and relax a bit before heading back out to dinner. The next day was another day full of splashing and we finished it off with some hot cocoa since we were literally shivering, something that doesn't happen too often here!
On the evening of the fourteenth, I was planning on heading the Chabad Chiang Mai's Passover Seder, so Bertille and I stayed dry most of the day. We went to a coffee shop right by the ThaPae Gate so we could watch the games while staying dry and getting some work done. The walk there felt like a video game. We had to duck behind cars and think of the best street-crossing strategies to keep our laptops out of harms way, like a non-life-threatening version of a war. We got there safe and sound, avoided getting wet on our way back to our hosts, and changed into nicer clothes for Passover before heading out to the Seder. We were running late, so the original plan of walking was out of the question, and we had to take a SongTaew, or minibus all the way across the old city. We found one pretty quickly and got in with two guys in short shorts studying their map of Chiang Mai and speaking Chinese, so I struck up a conversation with them, and found out that they were visiting from China for the festival, but were surprised about how angry the Thai people seemed as they threw water everywhere--wasn't this supposed to be fun? I definitely agreed that after sunset, the Thai gangs of teenage boys riding around in the back of pickup trucks were a little overly aggressive, especially since it was so cold out after dark, and just as we were talking about this, some guys ran up to the back of our songtaew with buckets of ice-cold water and ruthlessly soaked us all, disregarding our fancy clothes for the Passover Seder. So we showed up late and wet, but were welcomed nonetheless-- everyone else was wet as well!
The Seder was the most energetic one I've ever been to. We were sat at the table reserved for English speakers, and our whole table became fast friends. The rabbis were dancing all around, and the Seder didn't even feel too long before we got to the food. There was a great brisket and cucumber-tomato salad, and we all stuffed ourselves. Though we were originally only going to go to this one Seder, we went again the next night, and even met some French Jews that Bertille had a great conversation with. Even though I didn't understand the French, it was so fun to listen to the French speaking during a Jewish service during a Thai festival in Thailand. I felt so immersed in culture, and everyone was so happy to be where they were. Bertille even enjoyed herself so much that she told me that if she had to be any religion, she would chose Judaism because our holidays are so fun. It's crazy for me to think that she hadn't even met any Jewish people before coming to Thailand, and how two nights could influence someone that much. It made me so happy that the services were fun, and that I got to participate at all. It's been good to have a bit of my culture from home celebrated here once in a while!
On the morning of the sixteenth, we were surprised to see that the SongKran splashing had stopped as scheduled. we spent the whole day walking around the Old City, exploring shops that looked nice, and heading to the Night Bazaar for souvenir shopping in the evening. It was a long and tiring day, but a break for manicures in the middle made it nice and bearable, especially when the city around us was so beautiful. We had to head back home the next day, but I'm happy to have a few days to rest now before the International Week that starts on the 24th. I'll be busy busy until I fly home in about two weeks!
