i wonder about the modern retellings of persephone's abduction and how it reflects society's (children of all ages) views of their mothers
#op#sorry i'm just thinking about how i've only known the modern reinterpretations of the abduction#about the horrible controlling mother the suffocating control#and the man who loves persephone enough to help her escape#and how desperately i craved and desired and wanted something like that as the child of an abusive home#and it makes me wonder if it matters what is “really true”#like do the gods and goddesses care if you get it wrong#if you relate differently#im so curious#because i don't resonate at all with the og from the earliest found poem#who among us has a mother that loves them#sorry i've just been thinking a lot about what it means to be a mother#and i wonder if both stories could be true at once#somehow#demeter is a good mother who wants to protect her daughter from a man literally kidnapping her#even if that was supposedly real practice with marriages in greece then#AND persephone is using her marriage to hades as a way to escape an overbearing mother and empower herself#through her proximity to a powerful man#idk#it's stuff like this that keeps me from practicing hellenism#because i don't know what the truth is#i don't trust humans to accurately tell or retell the stories of divinity#but god do i wish i could know divinity to see what the truth is
