On December 2nd 1971 the last two permanently resident families leave the island of Scarp, off Harris in the Western Isles.
It was 52 years ago this week that the last native residents evacuated the island of Scarp with a family leaving on a small boat packed with furniture as their two cows swam behind them. The departure of Mr and Mrs Angus MacInnes and their two sons marked the end of an era on the island which was home to more than 200 people in the late 19th Century.
A newspaper report documented the exit of the MacInnes family, who came ashore half-a-mile away at Hushinish Beach on Harris before settling on a croft at Govig.
The article, printed in the Press and Journal, noted how the island was then “left to the Old Etonians” given its remaining residents were Andrew Miller Mundy, whose father once owned the North Harris Estate, and his school friend Andrew Cox, who temporarily moved to the island earlier that year with his wife and their baby, India.
After the MacInnes family left, life on Scarp continued for several more weeks until a heavy storm cut the island off with provisions running ‘dangerously low’. Mundy, in London at the time, sent a helicopter in to rescue his girlfriend, a model who he later married, with food also choppered into Scarp - just in time for Christmas.
Mundy later relocated permanently to Harris, trained himself to catch lobsters and worked the waters around St Kilda for a decade. He became a popular figure to many, representing Harris at council level for many years and was admired for his dedication to wildlife and conservation. Scarp, meanwhile, has seen little human life since the early 1970s. Those who inherited the island’s crofting rights still keep sheep on Scarp with rams taken over for tupping and lambs returned to Stornoway for sale in September.
The ruins of several old buildings remain scattered over the island with a handful of holiday homes bringing in visitors from time to time.
From a high of over 200 the population of Scarp was still a relatively healthy 100-150 at the turn of the 20th Century. The island is rocky and the north part is over 300m in height with a steep drop to the sea. The village, which is now in serious disrepair is located in the south-east corner where it is partly sheltered from the Atlantic winds. The only land capable of cultivation is near the village on the east coast. The local economy would have been very basic - potatoes, cabbages, oats, milk, fish. Billingsgate market in London would have been the destination for much of the lobster caught by the Scarp fishermen.
The village on Scarp had no electricity and the only means of illumination would have been oil lamps. There was piped water and the village did have a small shop. The telephone line was installed in 1947. Despite these few basic comforts Scarps population like so many other small islands around Scotland continued to decline. In 1966 the Church of Scotland refused to replace the lay preacher and a year later the village school closed. Two years later it was the Post Offices turn to close its doors for the last time and with it so ended all mail deliveries to and from the island.
As the islands infrastructure continued to deteriorate the next thing to go was the telephone cable. This was severed in a storm and the GPO simply refused to repair it. This was just about the last straw for the remaining islanders.
The people may have left but Scarp still gets mentioned in many a conversation to due the adventures of German rocket scientist Gerhard Zucher. The German boffin attempted to develop a rocket which could 'fire' mail from Scarp to Harris and vice versa. Unfortunately the first launch simply exploded on the spot. A second firing from Harris to Scarp was a success but the project was quickly forgotten....but still very much lingers in the legends and stories of Scarp.
Although there are no permanent residents, a handful of holiday homes still welcome visitors

Tall ( 32" ) pair aged leather obelisks enhanced with embossed gold decoration were designed in the late-20th century by Paul Maitland-Smith for Theodore Alexander. Paul Maitland-Smith was an antiques dealer in London beginning in the 1950s. He expanded into selling reproduction furniture - the market that became his specialty - and established Maitland-Smith Ltd. in 1979, collaborating with well-known designers such as Tony Duquette, Celerie Kemble and Susan Hable Smith, and founded Theodore and Alexander in 1996. The Egyptians carved and placed stone obelisks at temple entrances to represent sun rays in honor of the Sun God, Ra. The Romans took a fancy to the Egyptian design, resulting in the placement of obelisks throughout the Roman Empire. The concept of the obelisk has influenced cultures around the world, including those in South America, France, Italy, United States of America, and Ethiopia. On December 2nd 1971 the last two permanently resident families leave the island of Scarp, off Harris in the Western Isles.
It was 27 years ago this week that the last native residents evacuated the island of Scarp with a family leaving on a small boat packed with furniture as their two cows swam behind them.

American Hardwood Takes Centrestage on Second Day of Mayantara JAK.ID
Over 160 members of the design community in Indonesia and beyond gathered online over 3 webinar sessions to learn about the quality, variety, versatility and sustainability of American Hardwood
About the event
Mayantara JAK.ID 2021 is a special collaborative virtual festival hosted by Mayantara and HDII DKI Jakarta, with a focus on Interior and Spatial Design as a gateway to enhance public experience, as well as to celebrate Jakarta’s 494th Anniversary. The event ran from 16 to 18 June 2021 and with designers from Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and beyond attending.
Speaker Eddy Budiono:
The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) was invited to co-organise the second day of the event. John Chan, AHEC’s Regional Director of SEA and Greater China, jumped at the chance. He said, “We could not miss this opportunity to engage with the design community across Indonesia and the rest of Southeast Asia, and share with them the benefits that American hardwoods offers them as specifiers.”
AHEC presented various esteemed speakers on the second day of Mayantara JAK.ID. They shared their expertise on material choice, craftsmanship and lasting design.
In his opening address to the audience, Chan said, “You may have frequently heard of the notions of carbon neutrality, climate change and sustainability. The choice of wood as a material is one of the most important factors that can speed up carbon neutrality. Using wood from well-managed resources such as the American forests is one of the most environmentally-sound choices that we can make as consumers and specifiers.”
Chan reminded specifiers of three properties of wood that support its sustainability credentials as a material. First, it is renewable and naturally regenerated. Secondly, wood is a carbon store, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Thirdly, wood is energy efficient, requiring less energy when it is used to create useful products compared with other materials.
Speaker Karina Cheung:
Making a Good Choice: The Best Timber for the Best Outcome
Eddy Budiono, CEO and Owner of PT. Abadi Indorona, kicked the first session off by taking the audience on a virtual factory tour of one of Indonesia’s top manufacturers that exports to Europe. One of the key materials used by the factory is American white oak. Budiono explained that American white oak, with its elegant and minimalistic look, is in perennial high demand.
He then took the audience on a virtual tour of a small-scale carpentry workshop that uses American walnut veneer and American red oak in their production. He emphasised the quality of these American hardwoods which contribute to the durability of designs.
In his presentation entitled “Making a Good Choice: The Best Timber for the Best Outcome”, Budiono gave the audience three factors to consider in their material choice: quality, suitability for purpose and sustainability. With its systematic grading system, wide species diversity and its sustainable harvesting, American hardwood checks all the boxes.
The session was facilitated by Arief Odon, Editor-in-Chief of Woodmag.

Speaker Nathan Yong:
In Search of Craftsmanship
Karina Cheung, managing and creative director at Bika Living, shared her journey into design and her search for craftsmanship during the second session. Like American hardwood as a legacy crop, handed down through generations of landowners, Bika was started by Karina’s parents and now helmed by her brother and herself.
Cheung started by sharing a quote from one of her favourite fashion designers Alber Elbaz, “Part of what we do is giving joy to people. That is what design is all about.” This has become a guiding principle for Cheung and Bika, where they seek to “make furniture with soul”. They aim to forge a connection between themselves and their users by putting all their energy and focus into creating furniture pieces that spark joy. Therefore, the search for craftsmanship is actually a journey of introspection into one’s soul, that is then reflected in one’s designs.
Cheung reminded designers that “Not all timbers are created equal. Each wood species has its own character. To create with timber, we cannot run away from these considerations.” One of the materials she uses frequently is American walnut. Due to its strength and durability, American walnut can “put up with abuse”, which allowed Cheung to experiment with different structures as a designer.
Cheung also introduced another dimension to sustainability – durability. The product acts as a carbon store for the duration of its life. The durability of American hardwood species means it creates long-lasting furniture pieces.

Built to Last
Continuing on the same thread, Nathan Yong, founder and director at Nathan Yong Designs, talked about what it takes to successfully cater to consumer demands during the third session.
Yong started by sharing what he felt makes a design desirable. Form is the first aspect that draws the audience in, function keeps them further engaged, meaning drives the significance of the design, which will in turn drive value thereby increasing demand for the design.
Yong makes a conscious choice to specify American hardwood as the material is in line with his focus on “built to last”. American hardwoods are sustainably harvested, and of consistent quality, which assures Yong his pieces will be kept by the users. He also shared that long term strong partnerships – with suppliers, with production partners – are crucial.
He advised young designers to identify partners with the same focus on quality, “If you’re serious as a designer, the supply chain is really important. You can’t have wood that comes in today and doesn’t come in 6 months from now. You can’t have wood that is of good quality today, and of poor quality tomorrow. With American hardwood, you have consistent quality of wood that is cut at the right age, and the delivery is always on time. At the end of the day, think about it this way, a family is waiting for a TV console. You don’t want to keep them waiting or give them something substandard.”
Yong’s final advice for young budding designers, “Treat people respectfully. Try and keep trying. Join trade shows, get the word out.”

On December 2nd 1971 the last two permanently resident families leave the island of Scarp, off Harris in the Western Isles.
It was 27 years ago this week that the last native residents evacuated the island of Scarp with a family leaving on a small boat packed with furniture as their two cows swam behind them.
19 Oct 2020: Keeping retail within the last mile. Second-hand Ikea. Remote work panopticon.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
Tumblr media

Keeping retail within the last mile
Subship is a “weekly drop of local goods. Delivered free to your door, every Thursday.” It’s South-east London only at the moment. You might think of it as a different take on Near.St, which wants to make all of local shop inventory searchable - Subship makes a curated list (local, ethical, independent etc) and delivers from it.
Elsewhere in delivered goods, a one-woman food-to-offices delivery service has reinvented itself as Pedalling Pantry, a plastic-free, fruit and veg delivery service.
Second-hand IKEA
With resale, Ikea is trying to find new ways to acquire customers - IKEA is testing out a new way to incentivise customers to come to its stores during the holiday season. It will host a Black Friday event called Buy Back in 27 countries, where it will encourage customers to bring in old furniture for Ikea to resell. “All products must be returned completely assembled” says the website, which might cause a few rueful chuckles.
Remote work panopticon
74% of ~1,000 companies plan on maintaining the increase in home working. And San Francisco hits highest office vacancy rate in nearly a decade as workers stay home.
Stripe will pay workers $20,000 to leave New York and San Francisco. But there’s a catch: the workers who take up the offer will have to take a 10% cut to their compensation. This might make sense if you’re only planning to stay employed at Stripe a short while. But if your share options are based on your salary though, it might make less sense.
Some employers don’t trust their people working from home. 'I monitor my staff with software that takes screenshots' and Corporate snitches are using screen monitoring to find and fire slackers. Maybe a second team could monitor whether the first team’s productivity monitoring is itself ruining productivity and trust.
“Omni-shopping”
“We’ve updated the Walmart signage on the exterior and interior of stores to reflect the Walmart app icon, creating an instant omni-shopping experience in the customer’s mind.” - Walmart’s deploying a new look in stores that emphasises their app, and adds self-checkout and contactless payments. One thing all retailers want the customer to think is “Omni-shopping”.
Platforms
A government service running well:
Been a busy few days for GOVUK Notify... With almost no notice, we helped the NHS send nearly 40 million emails and text messages to help in the fight against coronavirus.
If you ever needed a case study on the value of common platforms...
A government service running less well: that Test and Trace numbers thing with the Excel file. It shouldn’t have happened, and it’s not good using spreadsheets to move data around. (No disrespect intended to the spreadsheet gods, who will receive an offering so their dream-like grid continues to watch over us and admit all calculations.)
The underlying cause may have been some historic organisational make-do meeting a new public health need which suddenly turned every dial to eleven. From the outside it is hard to tell, and too easy to judge - we do know that many working on these services will be doing their utmost.
Disability
Plastic straws and cotton buds banned in England. Businesses can no longer sell or supply the single-use items as part of efforts to reduce pollution - this is great for the environment. Except that there are unintended consequences: it will disproportionately affect disabled people for whom single-use straws are the way they drink fluids :(
In thinking about how to create services or a world for inclusion, this is very simple but profound: ability is temporary. Or putting it another way:
I need access, accommodation and equity. These are not special needs. They are the needs of every human being.
Working conditions
“We’re building the first comprehensive data set about the quality of hourly work in the UK and helping workers use that information to make decisions about what work they want to do and for whom.” - How Breakroom uses data to make hourly work better for everyone.
Regulation
“Today, the rules come from Apple, or California, both of which are increasingly becoming America’s privacy regulators by default. But they will also come from the EU, which is increasingly writing laws that, intentionally or not, change how American companies do business in America, and the more different rules we have in different places, the more fragmented and complicated things get. Regulation is an export industry, and a competitive industry.”
Co-operation
“Cooperation Town is a new network of community-led food co-ops, providing free and affordable food” - it also helps you start your own co-operative.
Co-op Digital news and events
How dividing into smaller delivery teams has improved delivery.
Switching to a career in digital is the best decision I ever made.
Co-op is extending free school meals through half term at its 25 academies.

Chapter 53. Lockdown
Tumblr media
It’s been almost five months since my last post:  Finland at the start of February.  That seems so long ago – in fact, it’s by far the longest Chelsay & I have gone without a trip in our five years abroad.
These are extenuating and unfortunate circumstances though.  The global Coronavirus pandemic has put the entire world in lockdown, with far more dangerous and deadly consequences for the millions infected. I don’t want to go into the staggering statistics, but I can safely say that every single person on Earth has been impacted. Even saying that, it is likely we won’t know the virus’ true toll for many years.
However, the purpose of this blog is to “record” Chelsay & I’s present thoughts, emotions, and experiences. In 20 years, I want to read these words and relive our time abroad.
The 2020 lockdown is historically and personally unique – likely more noteworthy than an individual trip we’ve taken. That said, there would be a gap in this record if I didn’t post about Chelsay & I’s lockdown experience.
I’ll start out by saying that Chelsay & I have been very lucky. We’ve been bored more than usual, but with lockdown coming to an end soon, we’ve made it through relatively easily.
The biggest reason: Indy! I briefly mentioned our new dog in the Finland post, but we didn’t bring him home until a few weeks later, just before the lockdown began. It was absolutely perfect timing:
Chelsay and I had stressed about how we would alternate working-from-home while Indy was a puppy. After coronavirus, this was a moot point… I’m not sure Chelsay or I will ever go back into our London offices.
Chelsay & I would’ve been painfully bored being locked at home for months, but Indy has been a blast. Play time, training, and walks have filled our otherwise open schedules.
That said, things weren’t so easy early on: Indy’s first two weeks with us were painful. Really really bad. He had a stomach bug when we picked him up so, starting with the first drive home, he was either throwing up or pooping every 45 minutes.
Tumblr media
Making matters worse, we were staying in a terrible basement AirBnB – the only one in London that allowed dogs. Beyond the complete absence of daylight, the other downside of this AirBnB was the thin walls… We tried having Indy sleep on his own, but he would HOWL incessantly. The neighbors were unexpectedly understanding for the first 15 minutes, but their (and our) patience ended when his crying hit the 1-hour mark.
Tumblr media
With all this pooping & howling, I’ll freely admit that I regretted getting a dog.  I’d expected a much easier transition, but the combination of his stomach bug & our dreadful AirBnB changed everything. That said, we stuck it out, and I actually think I learned a lot about patience & perseverance… And I’m just really happy Indy pooped all over the AirBnB instead of our permanent home.
Tumblr media
This is a good transition to our other main lockdown activity: settling into our new house. In my last post, I mentioned that we found this place within 24 hours of landing in London – a testament to our organization, motivation, and ability to fight off jetlag.
Settling in is always tough, but we had reason for optimism: Chelsay had meticulously coordinated the furniture & homeware shipments for our move-in date. Although most of the deliveries were completed without hiccup, some of the larger items were derailed when the UK went into lockdown. …The shipping company refused to deliver our items – I eventually found a creative solution that I won’t go into, but it meant out our couch, TV, and all kitchen cookware were locked away in a warehouse for an extra few weeks.
In the meantime, Chelsay, Indy, & I were living the college-lifestyle: we put the guest mattress in our living room as a couch replacement, used a computer monitor as a TV, and ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner for an entire month with only two forks!
That said, the benefit of missing furniture was the extra room for Indy to run around.  Actually, we had plenty of space even once ALL our furniture arrived! Our new flat is twice the size of the Manly apartment, and nearly the size of our previous THREE apartments combined! And that’s without considering the backyard, where Indy could roam freely, play fetch, get his zoomies out… or participate in the 2020 NFL Combine.
youtube
Although it took a few weeks to fill the house, we immediately felt settled in our new neighborhood. Chelsay & I loved Hampstead the first time we lived in London, so it was our top choice house hunting… All 24 hours of house hunting.
Tumblr media
Hampstead is undeniably London’s most charming & cozy neighbourhood: knobbly alleys, off-kilter homes, mossy lattices, vine covered brick facades. Close to the city, but very much an English village.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is also home to one of London’s largest parks, Hampstead Heath, which isn’t even really a park. It’s a forest. A wild, unmaintained maze of trees, vines, and brush, with pockets of open heath sprinkled around. Every weekday morning around 6:45 and every night around 6:30, Chelsay, Indy, and I set out for a walk through the park. Indy loves the night walk especially (when we bring his frisbee), but the walks aren’t just for him: Chelsay and I love the fresh air in the morning, and relaxing wind-down at night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These walks are one staple of our weekday routine, with the other being Chelsay & I’s daily lunch together. Despite work being busy for both of us throughout the lockdown, we’ve found time to take lunch together every single day.  It’s a flashback to Seattle, when Chelsay & I both worked in South Lake Union and we’d meet up a few times per week. These little breaks split up the day, and help us both prepare for busy afternoons. …The only problem is that we’re getting really tired of cooking. We haven’t gone to a restaurant since February 22. Today is June 26.
Weekends have their own routine as well.  Although we wake up early (a new talent of Chelsay’s), we’ll take our time with a bigger breakfast like huevos rancheros. We’ll then saddle Indy up for our primary weekend activity: a 2-3 hour walk through the Heath. These walks have been excellent for so many reasons:
The Heath is gorgeous, as described earlier. Each walk is unique, and we haven’t followed the same route yet.
The weather has been historically great: May was the sunniest month since Britain began recording in 1862!
It tuckers Indy out. He’ll go to sleep for 6 hours after we get back from our weekend walks.

Indy’s exhaustion gives Chelsay & I a chance to FaceTime with our families, a weekly highlight. With everyone in lockdown, its far easier to find a time when everyone can join: both our parents and our siblings (it’s not like we were doing anything else!). Our typical agenda goes: game night, recommend shows, make fun of each other’s unkept appearance.
Tumblr media
The rest of our routine weekend day is spent planning.  Both Chelsay and I have our own roles:
Chelsay tends to handle household preparedness. I have to give her credit – she was way ahead of the curve on Coronavirus. A week or two before the rest of the world caught on, Chelsay was already stocking up on essentials – and more importantly, reserving our online grocery delivery orders into May. This was SO. DAMN. CRITICAL. We went into Waitrose once in early March, and it was a genuine nightmare. You could feel the anxiety in the air: long lines to enter, with everyone panic-buying, irritable, and on-edge while trying to socially distance. It was so important that Chelsay stocked up beforehand and reserved those slots, ensuring we wouldn’t need to visit the grocery store.  Once lockdown started, every delivery service froze new member sign-up and locked delivery scheduling.

While Chelsay made sure we survived the lockdown, I was ensuring our travel agenda hit the ground running once restrictions were lifted. I’ve probably planned 15 different variations of trips in the past four months, scrupulously researching options that were exciting, feasible, and most importantly of all, cancellable. Although Puglia in April and the Lakes District in May ultimately needed to be cancelled, the following trips *seem* like they might be okay: Scotland road trip in July, Paris by train in late August, Central Europe road trip in September, and Egypt in October. KNOCK ON WOOD!
Now, the standard weekend includes these long walks, family Facetimes, & planning sessions, but Chelsay and I have still fit in a few exciting breaks from the routine.
First, Chelsay’s 30th birthday fell in the middle of lockdown. We’d originally planned to relive her favorite trip by visiting Scotland, but obviously that was no longer an option. Determined to celebrate her milestone birthday from home, I surprised her with balloons around the house and a ready-made dinner including lamb shanks, potatoes dauphinoise, and glazed carrots. Chelsay pre-baked dessert: a funfetti cake.

Second, as lockdown measures began to ease, we started taking day trips within England. Our first escapade was a short drive to Richmond, where Indy got sick in the car… With our Scotland roadtrip booked, we knew he needed better driving experience, so we immediately booked rental cars for the following three Saturdays. These trips were great car training for Indy, but more importantly brought us to some of the UK’s prettiest locations: Richmond, the Cotswolds, Seven Sisters, and Peak District.

I’ll end this post by emphasizing how lucky Chelsay & I have been during this lockdown. As I mentioned in the introduction, every single person in the world has been impacted by Covid in some way… but Chelsay and I have made it through relatively easily.
We’ll always remember this Global Pandemic and our four months stuck at home, but we’ll also remember the extra time we got to have with our new new puppy, or enjoying our new home and neighbourhood. We’ll remember how the extra planning time made our Scotland, EuroTrip, and Egypt trips that much more special. And most of all, we’ll remember that our friends & family remained safe and healthy throughout.

William Sutton Prize Shortlist

William Sutton Prize 2021 Shortlist
12 Jan 2021
William Sutton Prize shortlist announced after record-breaking applications
The third year of The William Sutton Prize run by Clarion Housing Group, the UK’s largest provider of affordable housing, has seen a record-breaking 154 applications. Of these, thirteen projects have been shortlisted, with many of the finalists’ proposals directly responding to the coronavirus pandemic.
Six projects* are shortlisted for The William Sutton Prize for Placemaking and Affordable Housing Design focusing on themes such as modular housing, retrofitting, supported housing and community co-production.
The shortlist includes projects by Assemble, a multi-disciplinary collective working across architecture, design and art, Editional Studio Ltd, whose founders were featured in AJ’s ‘40 under 40’ which celebrates the UK’s most exciting emerging architectural talent, and Space and Motion, a design studio based in South London.
A further seven projects** will compete for The William Sutton Prize for Social Innovation, with the shortlist including projects focusing on issues such as food poverty and education, money management for community networks and family support.
The winners in both categories will be announced at a virtual event at the end of March.
The William Sutton Prize was developed by Clarion Housing Group to celebrate William Sutton’s legacy as a 19th century innovator and philanthropist who bequeathed his fortune to improve the quality of social housing.
It encourages individuals and organisations to present a new concept, service or idea that will benefit social housing residents and communities, with a prize fund of up to £20,000 on offer per category to help develop the idea and maximise its impact. The funding is provided by Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group.
In the Prize’s third year, the criteria have been updated to reflect new thinking and creativity and include projects or ideas developed during the coronavirus outbreak with potential for long-term impact.
The winning entries will be determined by a panel led by Clare Miller, Group Chief Executive of Clarion, and including Biljana Savic, Director of the Academy of Urbanism and Richard Cook, Group Development Director of Clarion.
The winner of The William Sutton Prize for Placemaking and Affordable Housing Design in 2019 was Jas Bhalla Architects’ proposal for a planning policy that encourages the transformation of nine main roads in Outer London into dense, urban streets through place-based design guidance.
Clare Miller, Chief Executive of Clarion Housing Group, commented:
“When we opened applications for this year’s William Sutton Prize in the midst of a pandemic, we didn’t know what to expect. Several months later, we’ve seen a record number of applications with many showcasing innovative ideas developed to tackle some of the challenges society is facing due to coronavirus – it’s inspirational. My fellow judges and I are looking forward to meeting the creative minds behind our shortlisted projects and deciding on our winners.”
Biljana Savic, Director of The Academy of Urbanism, said:
“This is the third year of The William Sutton Prize and I am excited to see the range and quality of proposals on the shortlist for the placemaking and design category. The proposals re-examine in innovative ways the concepts of home and neighbourhood, reflecting the changing lifestyles, societal needs and trends that were already in train and that the Covid crisis accelerated.
Several of the shortlisted proposals also explore ways of empowering communities through co-creation and self-build models, tackling at the same time the climate change challenge. This is particularly impressive given the constraints around which the participating teams had to work due to the Covid pandemic. I look forward to discussing these inspirational proposals with my fellow judges.”
