2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a great wine for sure. It has structure, it has freshness, it has fruit, but it is dominated by spice and earth. The spice component shows cinnamon, Chinese Five-Spice and even some Christmas Spices. The earthiness is dusty and dry in its nature. Domaine du Pegau was the wine of choice for this week's tasting, with a comparison of the 2009, 2011 and the 2014 Cuvee Reservee! . Located in Chateauneuf du Pape, Pegau makes consistently good (and often great) wines every year. 2011 and 2014 were considered down vintages, but that just means that you can pay less for them and enjoy them earlier! . The Cuvee Reservee typically consists of 85% Grenache and 9% Syrah, with Mourvedre and other permitted varietals rounding out the blend. The vines are grown in rocky soils (pic 5). Whole-cluster fermentation is used and the wines are aged for 24 months in large oak vats (see pic 6). These pictures were from my visit to Domaine du Pegau in December of 2014. . Now on to the tasting notes! The 2011 is likely at its peak now, so drink them if you've got them! Bright red fruit, thyme, rosemary, pepper and hints of cedar. A well-rounded wine that was most enjoyable! . The 2014 kept evolving in the glass - even after a 3-hour decant. Initially, there were beautiful floral aromatics to accompany the bright raspberry, cinnamon, tobacco, leather, thyme and rosemary. Later the wine became more savory and brooding and pepper notes supplanted the flowers. Surprisingly, it rallied at the end of the night. . As enjoyable as the 2011 and 2014 were, the 2009 was the standout in this group! Following a 2-hour decant, the funk and meat notes dominated. After 3 more hours, however, the red fruit took center stage accented by more subtle funk, smoked meat, garrigue (rosemary, thyme, lavender), liquorice, and white pepper. The finish was long and complex. An outstanding wine that is in a great place, but there is certainly no rush to drink it. . While it is fun to taste Pegau when young, I typically wait at least 5-7 years to open them. My favorite vintages so far have been 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2015-2016. Domaine de Dionysos Cotes du Rhone La Devèze 2015 is a French red wine blend from Southern Rhone made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Carignan by Winemaker Phillipe Cambie and are classified as organic and biodynamic. Aromas and flavors of black raspberries, black currant and plum are layered with licorice/anise, spices and fresh lavender. This wine is medium body with nice acidity and 13.5% alcohol making this a very food friendly wine. A remarkable value  at $14 that can only get better with some more time in the bottle. La Devèze vineyard stretches over 50 acres of sand and clay soils, on well-exposed slopes facing south/west. The vineyard is planted with 30 year old vines of Grenache and Cinsault for sweetness, warmth and mellowness, and Syrah and Carignan for robust flavor, body/structure and color. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled concrete tanks and then is aged in French oak barrels for approximately 6 months. Southern Rhone red blends typically refer to a wide range of grape varieties often blended together to make wines in the southern reaches of the Rhone Valley in the south of France. While the blend could theoretically consist of any of a wide range of grape varieties, it is usually made up of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, in varying proportions, typically with Grenache and Syrah as the dominant partners. The Rhone Valley is one of France's key wine regions. Wines from the northern part of the valley tend to be Syrah-dominant such as Hermitage and Cote Rotie, while wines from the southern Rhone are more commonly blends, with Grenache being the dominant grape. 2009 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige is an excellent #wine. Sabon makes good wines even in difficult or very ripe vintages and in this fantastic vintage he unsurprisingly succeeded in an epic way. This is loaded with plum, blackberry, dried herbs, soy sauce and black tea. The latter two notes giving it elegance and salinity to offset the plush fruit. The blend is 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and the rest a melange of the remaining allowable varietals in CdP. Only the Syrah and Mourvedre saw any new oak...the rest was apparently raised in Foudres and I can't help but think that the conservative use of new oak has something to do with the profound success of this wine. This spectacular bottle of 2005 Chateau Rayas was ethereal and light red, but had an intriguing spicy component that really stood out during our tasting! It outclassed some of my favorite Northern Rhône Syrahs as well as a well-known Syrah-based California cult wine. . We decanted it for several hours while we drank champagne. After that, it was singing! The incredibly pure fruit was largely raspberry and wild strawberry with licorice and garrigue (sage, rosemary, thyme, lavender). On the palate, the wine was incredibly intense and concentrated. The intense fruit was balanced perfectly by ample acidity and supple tannins, and the long, complex finish lasted for well over a minute! 2007 La Bastide Saint-Dominique Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Secrets de Pignan embodies everything that is wrong with modern CdP. Imagine having access to Pignan...the sandy soils the great Rayas is made from. And then imagine picking so late that the final product tastes like a Port or Amarone. Such wasted potential. For good measure, this also had volatile acidity (VA) and secondary fermantation when I first opened this 11 year old bottle. It took a week in the cellar after having been triple decanted before it was even semi drinkable. Not an American #wine on #july4th but a great bottle nevertheless. This 2005 might be among my very favorite Pegau Reservee ever. Apart from the usual kirsch, garrigue and licorice, this has RACY acidity, black tea and soy sauce notes and a fantastic perfumed quality to it. This is what top tier CdP is to me personally. 2004 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige is as people say "the good stuff". Raspberry and plum with black cherry in terms of fruit. Provencal herbs, pastille and earthiness on the palate, too. Finishes very strong and maintains plenty of freshness and balance throughout. 2016 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Côtes du Rhône Villages Domaine de Peres en Filles Plan de Dieu is one of the finest value reds I have had in a while. It is a hypothetical blend between a Hermitage and CdP and shows both the cooler berry and bacon fat elements of Northern Rhone, as well as dried herbs and cherry that is more common in the Southern Rhone. It stays balanced throughout and delivers a fantastic marriage of fruit and earth/minerality. At $16 this might be my best value buy in a very, very long time and it is worthy of a case or multi case purchase because it will easily be able to age for 5-10 years. If you are a fan of Rhone wines, go buy some of this. Two 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Papes and they could not be more different. The Vieille Julienne on the right showed dark, brooding, with bitter chocolate notes while the Vieux Telegraphe showed lighter with raspberry kirsch and red fruit notes and a more pronounced beam of acidity. The Vieille Julienne was decent, but left me sort of wanting for more. 2004 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet is a near religious experience despite hailing from the good-but-not-great 2004 vintage. Licorice, kirsch and Chinese five-spice on the nose gives way to concentrated kirsch liqueur, dried herbs and beef blood on the palate. Finish goes on for ages and the bottle has been open for 3 days and just continues to get better.
