🚀 Follow @cosmos.o2o 🌌 Approach and landing tests: Spanning from early February to late October 1977, the first prototype space shuttle orbiter Enterprise (atop the Boeing 747 SCA) was flown on many flights to test out the shuttle’s aerodynamics on gilding, runway approach and landing. Test pilots activated a jettison system (which was installed temporarily) in the 747 to release the manned Enterprise over the Californian desert near Edwards air base, on five occasions to perfect shuttle reentry and landing maneuvers, and help engineers refine the design. ✈️ #spaceshuttle #spaceshuttleenterprise #enterprise #approachandlandingtest #approach #runway #boeing747 #1977 #edwardsairforcebase #aerodynamics #aviation #aviationphotography (at NASA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPZf4gvDYGI/?utm_medium=tumblr

There were only six space shuttle orbiters. There was also Pathfinder. In July of 2017, I had the opportunity to visit the US Space & Rocket Center in Hunstville, Alabama -- home of Pathfinder, a replica space shuttle orbiter with a unique heritage, and an important part of the space shuttle program in its own right. In this video, I explore the history of Pathfinder and the early testing stages of the orbiter program.

#FBF: Space Shuttle Enterprise Arrives at Marshall for Vibration Testing – Mar. 18, 1978 by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Via Flickr: This week in 1978, the space shuttle Enterprise arrived at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center for mated vertical ground vibration testing, which marked the first time the entire shuttle compliment – orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket boosters – were mated vertically. Here, Enterprise is offloaded at Redstone Arsenal Airfield before being moved to Marshall’s Dynamic Test Stand. Today, Marshall is playing a vital role in the Artemis program by developing the Space Launch System, the backbone of NASA’s exploration plans and the only rocket capable of sending humans to the Moon and Mars. The NASA History Program is responsible for generating, disseminating, and preserving NASA’s remarkable history and providing a comprehensive understanding of the institutional, cultural, social, political, economic, technological, and scientific aspects of NASA’s activities in aeronautics and space. For more pictures like this one and to connect to NASA’s history, visit the Marshall History Program’s webpage.
