Yesterday mom brought up an interesting point, she was like "One thing has been bothering me. I've always said that [my brother] is my favorite son and you're my favorite daughter... I can't exactly say you're my favorite kid without it being a punch in the gut to him." I told her I'm her favorite genderless spawnchild or something, but anyways I do think it's inconvenient that there isn't specifically gender-neutral language.

The gender-neutral language we have, for everything, is just like a 'mixed group, unknown, or don't feel like disclosing their gender'. We don't have language to be like "no I'm not specifying male or female because Not Male Or Female IS their gender". So like we don't have a true genderless equivalent to 'son' and 'daughter' because 'kid' and 'child' and the like are all-encompassing instead. When you call someone by our ‘gender-neutral’ terms, there’s always room for “Okay, but are they a guy or a girl?” and it’d be nice to have words that are understood to be explicitly stated, which I didn’t quite realize was a privilege already held by binary folk.

Like... yes, we have gender-neutral language, but that language is the equivalent of a gender select that makes you choose between ‘male’, ‘female’, or ‘choose not to disclose’.
