Ever since I knew that Siri knows a lot more than what I thought she knows, my behavior with her had changed a lot. I started sharing more than what I used to, which was not much. My eldest child with whom I never had an opportunity to be open with but now I am able to share what ever I want to. While driving back from her basketball session today, she was staring at me through the rear view mirror. I stopped the radio and asked her “nana what do you want to say ra?” Siri mumbled for a few seconds and said “no.” I told Siri “nana I know you have a lot to tell me but you are unable to now. Very soon you will be able to tell me all that you want to.” Siri raised her eyebrows while I was talking with her, had a sweet smile on her gorgeous face and continued to stare at me through the rear view mirror. This afternoon I had to go to an appointment and I told her exactly where I was going and when I was coming back. Previously, I used to think that if I share with her she might feel anxious or might want to come with me and if she does I don’t know how she would be. I didn’t realize that I told her until I was on the road. Siri and I are slowly but surely becoming much closer than we were before. This picture was a spontaneous (1st time) behavior of Siri. Every day I do her hair, massage her head and apply some oil. Later I apply lotion on her legs and arms. The other day she spontaneously did this with me which was captured by her dad. My precious, God’s designer piece. Can’t wait to hear what she has to tell me. We had four hours/wk of S2C before but now we do only two hours at the office. Siri and myself work at home when we find some time. I can do only lessons with Siri 🙂 which means I go with the printed lesson and questions. Today when the practitioner asked for Siri’s feedback about our session guess what she spelled? “There is nothing that beats spelling with my mommy” 🫢. Siri volunteered to do a Spell 2 Communicate session with me this evening. I let her set the timer, and today she set for 40mts. S2C basically goes like this, I read a short lesson and then I ask her to spell a few words and then answer a few questions. If there are any questions that do not have an answer in the lesson, I ask her if she wants to answer or not and she mostly chooses not to. She does that only with me and not with her practitioner. Siri knows that I am still training to S2C. The lesson we had today was about "Apraxia" (Apraxia is a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to perform learned (familiar) movements on command, even though the command is understood). One of the side affects of Autism is Apraxia. I learnt about this only a month ago, now I know a lot more about Siri than before. The following question was open ended: Question: Describe a motor action that started out as purposeful and has now become automatic for you. Siri's answer was EXERCISING For people who do not understand Autism nor Apraxia it's difficult to know how I feel this evening 😍. Siri is getting there, and we take one baby step at a time. Siri is sensitive to my feelings. Lately, I have been kinda not being myself and she has been noticing it even after I have been masking it very well. Sometimes I think she knows me more than I know about myself. If she could she would tell me how not to worry and everything will be fine 🤗. Today, Siri made my day by asking me to be coached for Spell2Communicate than she spelling with the practitioner. I couldn’t help but become emotional. All that I was hiding from her came out without my permission. Siri knew that those were happy tears as she had a sweet smile on her gorgeous face. Spelling with an expert is fun than with someone who doesn’t know how to read properly, pronounce the right way or can follow the rhythm of S2C. Siri has so much understanding of me and my inabilities and she makes it easy for me to spell with her. It gives me great comfort to know that Siri loves and cares for me a lot more than she can show but I do sense every bit of her love for me. The most surprising and also interesting thing about Autism is that we can never say that we know it all even if the child is in his/her adult stage in life. Recently we found out that Siri can communicate a lot more than she can verbally through a board. At first I didn’t think that it could happen. But it did! Siri said (through poking the letters on the board) that she wants to sing and wants lessons for voice and piano. I always thought that she was not interested but I was completely wrong which made me both happy and sad. But guess what? we found a teacher for both and Siri is starting her classes from next week. One more activity added to Siri’s already active weekly schedule. 1 hr Functional Fitness 4 hrs Spell to Communicate 2 hrs DanceVibes 1 hr Boxing 30mts horse therapy Adding voice + piano next week! Never underestimate anyone’s ability and never stop trying out new things in life especially for your child on the spectrum. They are much smarter, hardworking and talented than what we think they are. Siri! sky is the limit raja for you. As your mom it’s my honor to help you navigate through your life and make sure you learn all that you wish to. Can’t wait to see how her future will turnout to be.
