Protecting You (Spencer Reid x Maxine Brenner)
Tumblr media
----------------------------------------------
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Max Brenner
Ask: “Hello, you can write something like that Spencer is trying to protect max (let's say someone appears who, as always, threatens the team and from bdizkiim), but does not come up with anything better than breaking up with her. Only with a good ending.”
Summary: An elusive unsub threatened the whole team and their loved ones. Spencer is scared of something bad could happen to Max so he decided it's better to break up with her.
Word Count: 4.5k.
Warnings: Kidnapping. Physical injuries (not detailed). Mention to blood. Some strong words. If I missed something, let me know.
----------------------------------------------
“What?! Spencer, are you serious about this?” Max asked, standing from her couch and looking at Spencer in disbelief.
Was he breaking up with her?
Spencer winced, seeing how Max tried to make sense of the current situation. He averted her gaze; he couldn’t stand the betrayal look in her eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled.
“Are you? Why don’t you explain to me what happened? What did I do? I thought we were good. I - I don’t understand,” Max stuttered. Her voice was small and full of confusion. Spencer hated himself for doing this, but it was the only way. He loves Max too much to put her in danger.
“It’s not you. Believe me! You did nothing wrong, I promise,” Spencer tried to explain without disclosing the real reason for this decision.
Max shook her head.
“Spencer. I know that sometimes I ask too much. I know that it’s difficult for me to fit in your world, but I’m trying. I’m trying because I love you! I can try to fix whatever I did or did not. Just, please. Tell me how,” she begged.
Max wasn’t a woman who pleads in a relationship. The times were guys dumped her, she handled it and moved on. But now, it was different. A year of relationship with Spencer was enough for her to admit that she could do whatever he asked for because she knew - or she thought - it was mutual.
“I don’t want to hurt you. And my job eventually would do that. You deserve better, Max. Much better than me. I’m sorry.”
Max was still so shocked that she couldn’t say anything when Spencer grabbed his jacket and left the apartment.
She only reacted when the silence engulfed the space, sitting on the floor, with her knees on her chest and her arms wrapping them. She was trying to protect herself, but the pain was so overwhelming that she only could cry.
Loud sobs filled the empty room for hours. -
Spencer woke up the following day with an ache in his chest and a pounding head. He didn’t sleep at all. He repeated that what he did had to be done for Max’s safety, although it would mean that she’d hate him for the rest of her life.
Tara could say that the genius wasn’t okay when he got to the bullpen. But she didn’t mention it.
The team was having a hard time trying to catch an unsub that targeted them and their families. Emily instructed anyone to be careful, although they would have police protection.
JJ, Will, and the kids moved to a safe house. The same did Matt and his family. Emily warned her mom just in case, although it was less probably she could be targeted. Rossi sent Krystal to a safe house as well. Tara lived with Emily, Luke with Penelope, having a police patrol in their streets constantly.
Spencer had a police patrol in his street, but he didn’t want to drag Max to this ordeal. Knowing her, she wouldn’t accept having the police on her building and not doing her life as she does daily. That’s why Spencer thought it was better if she was not linked with him by any means. The unsub would discard her as a target. He had to push her out of his life and, consequently, out of the unsub’s radar.
Emily called the team to the conference room to update them about the case.
“There is a lead, but nothing guarantees that we can catch this guy. In the meantime, JJ and Matt will help us with the case from the safety houses. We are the field task group right now,” Emily informed. Everyone nodded. “Okay, about the lead we have. Garcia, check the coordinates I gave you. We have to go there and take our chance.”
“On it,” Garcia replied, tipping on her keyboard. -
Five days passed since Spencer broke up with her, and Max wasn’t doing okay. She tried. She told herself that maybe it was a misunderstanding and Spencer would come back to talk to her. It didn’t happen.
What’s coming next after the denying stage?: the anger. Even if Max thought Spencer could have reasons, she was sure he didn’t tell her the truth. One year of relationship was enough to know some clues about Spencer’s behavior. Max knew something had happened, but she didn’t pinpoint it. Did he find love with another woman? Was Spencer in trouble? Was he tired of her?
Answers. Okay, maybe Max would accept the breakup, but she needed the truth. That was what she needed.
After her shift, Max grabbed her purse and headed to the BAU. Maybe Spencer was away working in a case, but if that was the scenario, perhaps someone actually could explain to her what was happening with Spencer: Penelope.
“Honey, I’m sorry. It’s not my story to tell, but I’m sure Spencer will think better about it, and he will come back to you,” Penelope tried to reassure her after Max told her what happened with Spencer.
Garcia was dying to tell her about the unsub, but she couldn’t do that. Maybe Spencer had other reasons, and she didn’t want to fuck it up. Nonetheless, it broke her heart to see Max so afflicted.
“It doesn’t work like that, Penelope. I don’t want to be harsh, but if he would get to regret this, the reason must be convincing enough. I’m mad at him, although the fact I love him with my entire being. Things shouldn’t be like this. He should be able to trust me. But if he can not do that, there is nothing more I could do,” Max sighed. “Are you sure there is no other woman? I’m sorry, I know he’s your friend, but everything happened so suddenly that I don’t know what to think,” Max admitted guilt.
“It’s okay. Don’t apologize for that. And for what I know and I could see, the genius loves you like I never saw him love anybody. I don’t think that would be why he did it,” Garcia hypothesized.
Max nodded, trying to believe in what Penelope told her. Defeated, she left the BAU heading home. Max didn’t get the answers she needed. Maybe she would never get them.
-
A defeated team entered the bullpen two days after. They were tired and angry. The lead they had was an end road. And the unsub killed two more victims only to taunt them.
Passing the glass doors and even before they could reach their desks, a firm voice was heard coming from the conference room.
“Spencer Reid, bring your not-so-smart-ass here immediately!” Garcia shouts. Tara and Luke stared at Garcia and then Spencer, who had a confused look.
“Garcia, what’s this?” Emily asked, not amused at the rough interpellation.
“With all due respect, boss. I need to have a serious talk with the resident genius right now. If you knew what I know, you would agree with me.”
“What? What do you know?” Spencer rebutted.
“Okay. I see. But, please, can we skip the yelling part?” Emily said, moving to her office. She hasn’t the energy to deal with domestics issues right now.
“Yeah. I’m sorry, boss. Reid? Are you coming or not?”
“I don’t know if it’s a good idea...” He stuttered.
“C’mon, Reid. Just do what she says for everyone’s sake,” Rossi urged, moving to his office as well.
The genius strolled to the conference room, unsure why Garcia was so mad at him.
“What did you do?” Garcia interjected.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, and all the fuss out there? Honestly, Garcia? We had terrible days in New York believing that we could catch this unsub. Nobody is in the mood,” an annoyed Spencer spoke.
“You broke up with Max,” Garcia yelled. Spencer’s eyes widened.
“How do you know - “ Spencer tried to ask.
“She told me,” Garcia cut him off. “And, honestly, Reid? The ‘demanding job’ bullshit? I don’t buy it, and she doesn’t, too,” Penelope said, arms crossed over her chest.
Spencer downcasted his gaze. He was embarrassed. But mostly mad at himself for the damage he did to Max. Of course, Max wouldn’t believe him. She’s smart enough to know that he was lying. He didn’t tell her the truth and hurt her more than he intended to.
“Did she tell you that?”
“She knows something is off. The poor girl believed that you had another woman! She told me that she thinks she is not enough for you, and you got tired of her!”
“That’s not true! I love her!” Spencer defended.
“Nice way to show it,” Garcia scoffed.
“I’m trying to protect her! You know why! You have seen what this guy does to his victims. I can’t stand the thought that something like that could happen to Max. I can’t...”
“But you lied to her, Spencer. That’s not the way either. You still can protect her without breaking her heart!”
“Fuck. What have I done?” Spencer lamented.
“You fucked it up, pal. Really bad. But she needs to know, though. Even if Max will never forgive you, she deserves to know,” Garcia pointed.
-
Spencer rushed to Max’s apartment. He hadn’t precisely thought what to say, but Garcia is right. Max deserves the truth.
When he got to her door, Spencer knocked three times. But he got no answer. Was she at home? It was nearly 7 pm. Her shift ended at 5.30. Weird. Maybe she went to Michelle’s or her dad’s. Taking his phone, Spencer dialed Max’s number. It went directly to voice mail. Did she block him? Maybe something happened to her.
Spencer started to panic.
He used his spare key to get in.
It was Wednesday. The apartment was as if she had left in the morning and wasn’t returned home yet. Some cups were scattered in the sink, the newspaper from Tuesday on the coffee table.
He tried calling her again. Voicemail.
Spencer got a bad feeling.
He called to her work, and they didn’t see Max since Monday. The same said his dad and Michelle.
Something happened to Max. Spencer called Emily. She told him not to freak out yet but still instructed Garcia to collect everything she could to have Max’s whereabouts.
The clock struck midnight, and Spencer was in the BAU with Garcia, Prentiss, Rossi, and Tara.
Spencer was right. Garcia reviewed the footage from Max’s building, and she didn’t make it home Monday afternoon. They checked every camera available in Max’s regular route. When she left the metro station, they noticed that a car had followed her. In the next corner, Max had disappeared.
Spencer wanted to slam his head to the wall.
“It’s my fault. It’s my fucking fault,” Spencer lamented.
“Don’t say that. We don’t know if we’re talking about the same unsub,” Emily tried to reassure him.
“Even though, why in the Earth you thought it was a good idea not to warn her?” Rossi pointed. The three girls in the room looked at David with scolding eyes. Spencer nodded.
“Rossi is right. It was the dumbest thing I did. And I have done several dumb things in my life,” Spencer sighed.
“We’ll find her,” Garcia sentenced.
“I have to tell this to her family,” Spencer mumbled.
“We’ll figure it out. For now, I think I should be the one who talks to the Brenners.” Emily pointed.
-
When Max woke up and opened her eyes, she noticed she was tied up to a chair. She couldn’t move. Her feet were tied up too. It was a dark room, barely illuminated by an old bulb. Then she remembered. She walked from the metro, almost reaching her building when two men grabbed her and pulled her into a car. They blindfolded her, and when she tried to release herself from their grip, one of them hit her with a gun. She lost consciousness until now.
‘Are you fucking kidding me,’ she mumbled to herself, now feeling the pain in her head.
“Oh, the princess is awake,” a male voice teased Max. She couldn’t see him; he was behind her.
“What do you want? Money? I don’t have any. I don’t know you either. Why I’m here?” Max asked, trying to look calm although she was scared.
“Always do you ask so many questions? You strike me like a bossy girl—no wonder why Dr. Reid likes you,” the man quipped. Max’s heart stopped hearing Spencer’s name.
“Spencer? What about him? Is he okay?” She rushed to ask.
“Easy girl, everything will be revealed at the right moment. But I’m curious about how you can be worried about him when he dumped you,” the man questioned, mocking at her. Max huffed.
“Fuck you!”
“Hey! Watch that mouth! I don’t have as much patience as your boyfriend - sorry, ex-boyfriend,” the man taunted again. This time Max assumed it was prudent not to say anything. But now, she was sure that this ordeal had to be with Spence, the BAU, or both.
‘What an appropriate time,’ Max thought.
“Try to sleep, princess. You’ll need it,” the man said and left the room.
Max tried to focus on where she was. She suspected she was in a basement but not in a house; the room was huge. It was the night she guessed because there was a tiny window at the top of the front wall, and she could see red, blue, and green lights, as the street advertises usually has. The small window let her see a grey building in a corner. An alley, perhaps? She tried to think, but she was tired. After some hours, she indeed fell asleep.
The man returned after the sun came out. Max opened her eyes, feeling someone looking at her. When she saw who it was, she groaned. She hasn’t dreamed the thing. It was real.
“Okay, princess. It’s time to start the show.” The man piped, smirking. Then he opened a briefcase and pulled out a cellphone and several pictures of the BAU team and their families. Scattering over a large table, Max could see all the photos. One of those picked her attention: it showed Spencer leaving her building. He was wearing the same clothes the day he broke up with her. She could see his face clearly. Spencer was crying. A lump stuck in Max’s throat.
“The good doctor doesn’t look happy there,” the man pointed. “That’s the reason you’re here, princess.”
“I don’t understand,” Max mumbled quietly.
“You’ll see. I have been tracking the BAU for a while. They ruined my life, and I’ll return them the favor. And you’ll help me. They will lose a loved one, and you’re the doctor’s one.”
“You’re wrong. I’m not Spencer’s loved one. Did do you remember he broke up with me?” Max said, trying not to break in front of the man. Max understood what Spencer tried to do, and she was trying to make it work, although it broke her heart.
“Don’t fool yourself. Doctor Reid tried to fool me, breaking up with you so I wouldn’t pick you. But I’m smartest than the BAU’s genius. And for that, you’ll be the first I kill.”
The man’s laugh made Max wince. She would die there.
“You don’t have to do that,” Max muttered as a preservation reflex.
“Oh, honey. I have, and I will. But first, we’ll have some fun. Smile!” the unsub said, shooting a pic of her with the cellphone. Then he pressed the send button.
-
The buzz of Spencer’s phone woke him up. He had fallen asleep in a chair with his head over the round table. Penelope was nose deep on her laptop in front of him. Spencer grabbed his phone and saw a message with a pic of Max attached.
“Fuck,” he muttered. “He has her. He has Max!” the young doctor yelled, showing the image to Garcia. The text read: ‘Did you think I wouldn’t notice her? If you want to see her again, you have to know who I am and remember how YOU ruined my life.’
That was the proof they needed to know they were dealing with the same unsub.
“Okay, we won’t lose him again,” Prentiss declared when everybody joined the conference room. JJ and Matt were there too. They knew what had happened, and they promised to help to find Max and the unsub. Penelope ran every piece of video or photo they could find.
Rossi and JJ searched in every case the BAU worked with the same MO. Emily called other agencies for help. The time was against them.
Spencer tried to assist, but he couldn’t do anything but blame himself. Tara helped him to clear his head a bit so he could provide some clues that could be useful.
Thursday night, they got a name: Albert Pricket. This unsub was captured by the BAU ten years ago, but he escaped last year, and nobody notified the BAU. Now he had a vendetta, mainly focused on Reid, who was the agent that took him down the first time. Now every made sense. That didn’t make Spencer feels better, though.
“Okay, now we have to know where he is,” Prentiss mused.
At that very moment, Spencer’s phone went off. Garcia was tracking the call.
“Hello?”
“Doctor Reid. I guess you know who I am now,” the man spoke.
“Albert. I know,” Spencer replied.
“Still the genius, right?” Pricket mocked.
“Albert, I need to know Max is alive and okay,” Spencer demanded.
“She’s alive. I can assure you that. But ‘okay’ could be relative, right honey?” The man asked rhetorically. “You could see for yourself. Your tech can show you.”
Everyone looked at Penelope, who frantically typed in her laptop. When she indeed found something, her face went pale. After turning the laptop screen, everybody could see a live video that showed Max tied up to a chair, full of bruises on her face and dried blood on her forehead and arms.
“What did you do to her!” Spencer freaked out.
“Calm down, doctor. It’s her fault. She didn’t cooperate that much. But now she is ready to send you a message,” Albert said and hung up immediately, so he wouldn’t be traced.
The looks turned to the screen when they heard Albert’s voice.
“Come on, princess. Now it’s your turn. You can talk to him. Tell him what you need to say,” he demanded.
Spencer’s eyes were a blur from the tears that started to fall.
A tired and beaten Max looked at the camera.
“Spencer? Are you seeing this? Right? I - I’m okay. But I don’t know for how long. I need to say things to you, though. Even if you don’t love me anymore...” Max’s voice trembled, so she had to pause a bit.
Spencer was fully crying right now.
“Hey, Walt. Listen to me, please.” That made Spencer perk up and narrow his eyes. She knew he hated his middle name, even ‘Walt,’ the short for Walter. Max never called him Walt.
“This is your fault. You know that already...”
The team couldn’t believe that Max was telling those things. But Spencer didn’t say anything and was listening carefully.
“Even though, you need to know that I loved you. Do you remember our first kiss? In that crowded club? I didn’t know I could fall so fast for you. That night, with the neon lights over our heads, I saw stars, and I felt sparks. I should have known you would dump me like trash. After my death, maybe you would hide our story in a box in your basement. I don’t know, and I don’t care. You can run away to another state or country, but your mind always will return to the same place. Where we promised to love each other forever, that promise you broke so quickly...”
“Enough! Stop talking. Don’t waste the time you have left,” Albert cut off. “Okay, doctor Reid. That’s all. Now you would have to live with the guilt.”
Then the transmission ended.
“Garcia?” Emily urged.
“I couldn’t track it. He used UK IPs and Canadians and then Americans and finally Australians...” Garcia trailed off.
“Spence,” JJ spoke, seeing the genius deep in thoughts. “Surely she said that because Pricket forced her.”
“No! I’m trying to figure out. Max never calls me Walt. I mean, never! And the facts she recounted? They are not true. Our first kiss was in that elevator!” Spencer pointed to the glass doors.
“So why did she say all those things?” Tara questioned.
“They are bread crumbs,” Prentiss concluded.
“A location?” Rossi interjected.
“A club. But Max couldn’t have known that. A crowded place? There must be people around. My box in a basement? I don’t have a basement in my building. She is in one. Where did we promise to love each other? Not another state, not another country! Garcia, the transmission, in what part of DC jumped?”
“Oh, you’re the genius couple!” She chirped with excitement. “Downtown. Coincidentally, an area where Pricket’s family had a factory.”
“Okay, let’s go!” Prentiss instructed.
-
They got to the abandoned factory. It was dark, but the factory was in an alley that led to a building with neon lights at the entrance. Surely it was a nightclub. Spencer knew that it was the place. Max described that exact location.
They hopped off the SUVs and prepared to get in. How would they do it? The surprise factor would work? What if Albert knows they are there?
With the SWAT team’s help, they covered every entrance and scanned the place with heat detector monitors. Then left side of the building showed movement. So they prepared to storm in.
They were about to bridge when a scream was heard.
“Max!” Spencer gasped, running inside the building, aiming his gun. The team and the SWAT followed suit.
They didn't count on the men guarding the building for Albert. Seeing the police, the men started to shoot them. Prentiss and Luke covered Spencer, shooting back. The young doctor wasn’t paying attention. He just wanted to reach the basement where Max was.
As the rest of the team and SWAT took care of Albert’s associates, Spencer reached the basement and stopped immediately when he saw Albert holding Max from behind. A knife threatening her throat. Spencer pointed his gun to Albert.
“Don’t even think about it, doctor Reid. You move, she dies. Understood?”
Spencer rose his hands in surrender. Still with his gun in one hand.
“Okay, okay. I’m not moving. Just leave her alone. She hasn’t to do anything with this. It’s me who you want, not her,” Spencer tried to convince him.
“Drop your weapon!” Albert yelled.
“Okay! Easy Albert. You don’t have to do this,” Spencer said, kneeling to put his gun down.
“Spencer, don’t. Shoot him! He’ll escape if you don’t stop him,” Max shouted.
“I can’t. He would hurt you,” Spencer explained, still kneeled but with a grasp on his gun.
“Yeah, princess. The good doctor is right!” Pricket added. “And the rest of you don’t dare to enter the room, or I kill them both!” Albert said, hearing the BAU team and SWAT approaching.
“He’s a liar. He’ll kill me anyway. Spencer, please… end this,” Max rebutted, tears falling down her cheeks. Spencer’s heart broke seeing her so helpless.
“Your gun!” Albert yelled again, tightening his grasp on Max. Spencer quickly put his gun down and kicked it aside, far from him. “Now, doctor Reid, tell your ex-girlfriend what you want to say to her before we get out of here!”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Spencer mumbled, making eye contact with Max. She looked at him in understanding.
“I know; I still love you, Spencer. And I’m sorry too,” Max muttered, looking at him intensively as she wanted to say something else.
Spencer frowned.
In a second, and feeling that Pricket holds on to her lose a bit, Max kicked Albert’s ankle. Pricket hissed, and Max rushed to move away from the knife, but he still had her arm gripped, and the blade cut a bit of Max’s neck skin. Spencer rushed over them and launched over Albert, plummeting to the floor. In the fall, Pricket drop the knife and Spencer punched his face. But Pricket fought back, kicking Reid’s ribs.
“Spencer!” Max yelled and the rest of the team stormed in. Matt and Luke rushed over Pricket as Rossi and Prentiss stopped Spencer.
JJ rushed over to Max to see if she was okay.
When Spencer noticed that Pricket wasn’t a threat anymore, he turned to see Max. They locked eyes, and she ran to him. Spencer opened his arms to her.
“It’s okay. It’s okay. You’re safe now,” Spencer mumbled in Max’s hair as they melted in a tight embrace. She was shaking.
“He hurt you…”
“No. No, I’m fine. You’re hurt, though,” Spencer mentioned, looking Max’s bruised and cut.
“I’m sorry. I should have been more careful,” Max tried to apologize.
“Please, don’t say that. You had no way of knowing,” Spencer told Max.
“That’s why you broke up with me, didn't you?” She asked carefully.
“Yes. It was stupid. I hurt you. I didn't think this could happen. I’m sorry. I was so stupid, I should have realized that he already knew everything about us. I thought I could really protect you. I’m sorry, Max,” Spencer apologized, taking her hands in his.
“All those things I said at the camera... I didn't mean it,” Max explained.
“I know. That's how we found you. I knew you wanted to attract my attention to this. You know I hate my middle name. You did good, Max,” Spencer said.
“There was a moment when I really thought I'd never see you again,” Max sputtered, remembering the past hours in that basement and tightening the hold on Spencer’s hands.
“You were so brave. You held on. You did so well. I know that my words could mean nothing to you now, but I’m so proud of you.”
Max looked at Spencer and shook her head.
“I know why you did it. It wasn’t the smartest thing, but I get it. I only need to know how you really feel about me. If you want me out of your life for good.”
Max’s voice trembled, but she wanted to stay strong because this could be the real end of their relationship.
“I’m such a jerk. I know. But this jerk loves you so much that it hurts. I’m still afraid of what this job can do to us, but I don't want to lose you. I love you, Max Brenner. And still, I want to protect you. I won’t fail next time. I promise.”
Max's eyes went glassy, but this time with happy tears.
“We can protect each other, Spencer. It’s not only on you. We can do it together,” Max said, reaching his cheek to stroke it lovingly. Spencer leaned into her touch.
“Can you forgive me? Can we start again?” He asked cautiously.
“Are you asking me to be your girlfriend again?” She teased. Spencer chuckled.
“Yes. Would you be my girlfriend, Max? Again?”
Max giggled and wrapped her arms around Spencer's neck, kissing his cheek.
“Yes. I would love to. But next time, if some freak is haunting you, let me know first, okay?”
“Deal,” Spencer agreed, hugging her tightly.

For your 100 Drabble, if possible, the phrase, ‘ you know I love you, right?’ with the pairing of Maxcer. Thank you!
When she finds him, he’s sitting on the curb outside the house with his head in his hands. He startles when Max takes a seat next to him.
“I’m sorry,” he mutters.
“Don’t be.”
“No, they’re your friends – this was important and I messed it up because I can’t get through a conversation without having flashbacks and freaking out!”
“It’s fine, really. Andrea shouldn’t have brought it up. Hey Spencer,” she says. Her voice is so soft. “You know I love you, right?”
He finally lifts his head to meet her eyes. She smiles as she repeats those words. “I love you.”
It’s the very first time but she says them with such confidence it makes him want to cry all over again. “I love you, too,” he whispers.

Spencer Reid’s three loves
you know how they say you fall in love 3 times in your life? i think these are Spencer’s…
1: First love
this is a puppy love, one that you may look back on and think that it wasn’t love, but it was; it was what you knew love to be…
Lila Archer
Tumblr media
2: hard love
this is the love that hurts, and teaches you the reality of what love is other than just the innocence. it may be tough, but it’s still a pure love
Maeve Donovan
Tumblr media
3: unexpected love
this will come at random and you may not be ready for it after the last love, but it feels right and safe still
Max Brenner

I’ve been thinking about this question:
Do you think Spencer Reid would have had his child/children homeschooled because of his past of being bullied in school?
I think he would have had his kid/kids homeschooled, with having to convince Maeve/Einstein/Max greatly (I personally prefer pretending that Maeve is alive, or pretending that Reid ended up with Einstein [please do not interact if you pretend that JJ, or worse, Cat, is the mother of Reid’s kid/kids]).
I know my characters Oliver and Sayuri Marshall, Thomas and Evangeline Maxwell, and Andrew and Lacey Mitchell would all have a mistrust of the schooling system and would have their children homeschooled, especially since the children are all neurodivergent, despite that their close friend, Miranda Schneider, is a kindergarten teacher, and another close friend and Miranda’s husband, Brett Schneider, is an elementary school counselor.

Maxcer
Spencer Reid x Reader x Maxine Brenner
Hey guys I’m back! Sorry if this story is bad bcs all those common vocabs I’ve been using over and over. I hope you enjoy!
Masterlist
-
Leaving Quantico wasn’t the best option for your life but you had to. Your parents were divorced and they leaved your little twin brother and sister alone. They abandoned them and left town. What kind of parents were they? Your siblings were on young age to suffer this kind of life. You moved because you the only one family they had. You had to be surrogate parents for them.
So all you had to do was moved to New York started a new life and leaved your previous life before. You filled transferred form and gave it to chief unit, then you moved to FBI Field Office.
It wasn’t easy for you to leave your team. They were the best team for the past 8 years. Everything you been through, you shared with them. You couldn’t hold your tears when you told them about you moving out. Especially to your ex, Spencer. You two were a thing for years. It wasn’t really a boyfriend girlfriend thing, but the feeling between you were strong.
You remembered when you talked to him, you said that we had to end this relationship between us, because you didn’t believe in long distance relationship. He hugged you while cried and you said to him that he could find someone else, but you hope that he would wait for you until your siblings step on college and you might move back to Quantico. He nodded and you left the building.
3 years passed, your siblings finally stepped on college, and fortunately they both got into Georgetown University in Washington. What a coincidence for you to moved back to your old life, in Quantico. So you and your siblings moved out from New York, to your old apartment, which was lucky for you no one lives there. You helped them packed their needs to stayed at dorm at their college.
You already sumbit the transfer file to Headquarter and within days, you’ll be back on duty.
“Kids, i’ll be gone for hours. I need to go to the Headquarters to sign several documents. Order whatever you wants, okay?” You informed them and they nodded. You kissed their forehead and leave building.
On your way to office, you felt your stomach hurt, your palm sweaty, nauseous, the common feeling when you anxiety. Not because you will meet your friends. But it was because of Spencer. 3 years no contact, what will happened when you meet him?
Hours passed and you finally made it to the building. You walked to lift and press level 8 button to the Director office first to sign some papers. After it finished, you headed back to lift and press level 6.
The lift open and you walked out. You slowly examine the this level 6 which brought you back to the old memories. Nothings changed. Everything was still the same. You pushed the glass door and and you found your old teammate were gathered and lauged together. Until Emily’s eyes caught your presence.
“YLN?” When she mention your name, all the teams eyes stared on you. “YLN.” She call out your name second time and she hugged you.
“YLN YLN YLN!!!” Garcia was the one who yelled your name and hugged you as well. “OMG YLN i was thinking about you like minutes ago and now you were standing before me you black raven hair.” She pulled the hug and stared you like you were a fugitive.
Then you hugged Rossi. “I can’t believe i had a chance to see you again, young lady.” You smiled and pulled the hug.
“YN, it’s been a years. You haven’t changed a bit.” Tara greet you and gave you a brief hug.
Then you hugged JJ, longer than everyone. “Finally meeting you in flesh and bones. No longer video calls for us.”
Then you shook hand with Matt Simmons and Luke Alvez, new members of the team. And they told you that Morgan quit from bureau, he married and has a son, Hotch out because he was stalked by unsub. Damn, you missed so many things that happened to the team.
“Wait JJ, what do you mean no longer video calls with YN?” Tara asked JJ. She smiled and winked at you.
You showed them the papers you been hold since you got there. “I’m transferred back in here.” Everyone cheered included Simmons and Alvez. “So... what’s the occasion you guys laughed minutes ago?” When you asked the question, suddenly they went silent. “And... where’s Spencer?”
“Oh he went out w-“ before Simmons could finished, Emily interruped him.
“Uhm... why don’t you come to my office and handed me the files of your transferred.” You furrowed your eyebrows but you followed her.
Behind you, Alvez asked whispered. “What’s the matter? Why Emily cut Simmons?”
“Newbie, you couldn’t asked that question. Don’t you guys know Spencer was her ex. They were dating long ago before YN moved out of town.” Garcia explained to them who didn’t know.
In the other side, you sat on chair and gave her the files. “So, how’s the twins, Malcolm and Melody?” Emily asked while she open the files.
You smiled. “They’ve been better, Em. They never disappointed me as a sister. Yeah, sometimes they disobeyed me, but they just kids.”
After a long conversation with Emily, you out of her room and walked to the lift, because you’d get back to your place. The door was open and when you about to enter, you stopped because you saw a couple kissing. Your intention was to looked away, but you ended up looked at the man who kissed the woman. The familiar face even his face was seen half. Your jaw dropped when he pulled the kissed and started you in disbelief. “YN?” “YN.” He called your name twice, but the tone when he called you the second time was weak.
“Spencer...,” you called his name in whispered.
“Spencer, who’s this? You knew her?” The woman beside her started to asked Spencer because the tension has begun between three of you. “Hi I’m Max, you must be Spencer’s friends, right?” She asked you friendly even thought she knew things were not right.
Spencer couldn’t speak any word because he shocked you just stood before him without warning. Then Max pushed him out of lift. “I’ll meet you downstairs. Go get what you need.” She smiled and the door was closed.
“So...,” you braced up and started the conversation. “Is she... your...?” You couldn’t finished the simple question you supposed to asked, but you knew he knew the rest of the question. He nodded. “I thought you... nevermind.” You walked fast to the lift which happened to be opened on the right time and leave him alone.

Maxcer HC/Blurbs: Career Day
Another one for Maxcer HC/Blurbs/Mini-fics! This one if for my dear friend @dreatine. Hope you like it! Any like, reblog, or comment is appreciated.
Request: “For the Maxcer request blurb: Before Max gets the Smithsonian job, she’s still a teacher to 7-8 year olds. So, she decides to bring Spencer in to talk to the class about his job during career day. He charms them and Max falls deeper for him. Thank you. Peace.”
Word Count: 1k.
Warnings: None.
----------------------------------------------
“What? You want me to do that?” Spencer asked Max.
“Yeah. It would be fun. The kids already love everything related to community services. We have been talking about firefighters, nurses, cops...” Max explained to Spencer.
“But I’m a profiler. I catch serial killers for a living. I don’t know if that is appropriate for kids.”
“Well. You can skip the serial killer's parts and its darkest details. You can say you catch the bad guys using your brain. I think that’s pretty amazing. And I know the kids will love it!” Max proposed. Reid frowned, considering Max’s words.
“I’m glad you can see the bright side of my job,” he chuckled.
“Of course I do. You save lives, Spencer. That's something no everyone can say,” Max replied, taking his hand. “So, can I count with you on this?” Spencer nodded, smiling at her. “Yes! Thank you!” Max wrapped her arms around his neck, peppering kisses on his face. Spencer giggled at the sudden display of affection.
And like this, Spencer just accepted to go to Max’s school on the ‘career day’ to talk about his job. Max and Spencer were dating for two months now, and the spark between them could be ‘smelled’ yards of distance, despite neither of them verbatim too much about it yet. The team didn’t say anything to not overwhelming Spencer, but they knew he was totally hooked for Max.
-
“Good morning class!” Max greeted her students with a smile. Spencer was next to her and only waved to the kids. He didn’t know why, but he was nervous.
“Good morning Miss Brenner!” The kids greeted her back.
“Well, class. As you know, today is ‘career day’ so I brought you a special guest to talk to us. He is Spencer Reid. Shall we say hello to Spencer?”
“Hi Spencer!” The kids chorused.
“Hi!” Spencer replied, waving again.
“Spencer is going to tell us what he does in his job, and then you can ask him questions about it, okay?”
Max looked at Spencer, giving him a reassuring smile, and then she sat on her desk, leaving Spencer with all the kids' eyes focused on him.
“Okay. As miss Brenner said, my name is Spencer Reid. I work with the FBI in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. You may ask what that is, right? So, well, I can tell you that we do something pretty similar to cops do: we catch the bad guys, but we use the psychology to do that. It’s pretty close to doing magic, you know?”
The kids seemed genuinely interested in Spencer's words, although they couldn't understand some of them.
“Are you show us how you do magic in your job?” A girl asked.
“You want me to do that?” Spencer asked the class, smiling.
“Yeeessssss!” The kids replied enthusiastically.
“Okay. I’ll need some assistance here. Ms. Brenner, could you please lend me your board marker, please?” Max nodded and handed him the marker. “Can I borrow that boxes too?”
Spencer gave each child an empty box. Then he gave the marker to one of the girls.
“I’m going to be outside the classroom for a minute. You give the marker to any one of your classmates so they could hide it in the box. When I come back, everyone will have their box closed, and I’m going to find out who has the marker, okay? I’ll let you know who has it ‘reading your minds,’” Spencer said in a mystery voice, rolling his fingers. The kids giggled.
Spencer looked at Max and grinned. Max swear that she would melt in that spot right then. He seemed so focused on the task in hand, and the kids were pretty interested.
When Spencer left the room, the children decided who would hide the marker and then returned to their seats.
Spencer came back, and the play began. He started to pace in the classroom, looking at each child. Some of them shifted in their seat; other averted their gaze from him. Then he sat in front of them to analyze their micro-expressions.
“Okay. Did you know that face’s expressions are very important when you're trying to know when someone is telling the truth or hiding something? If we furrow our brows or twitch our noses, that could mean uneasy or nervousness, for example,” the young doctor explained to the class. Some giggles and coughs were heard between the kids. “But! Also, the body language is very important: rubbing your hands in your pants, bouncing your legs, arch your back, or sinking in your seat could be helpful to find out who has the marker.” Spencer narrowed his eyes, looking at all the kids in the room. The children almost contained their breathing in anticipation. And after some minutes of deliberation, Spencer spoke in a soft voice.
“Adrian, could you open your box, please?” Several “oh” were heard. They knew Adrian had the marker, but when he opened the box, it was empty. The class was confused. Even Max furrowed and looked at Spencer, puzzled.
“Oh, maybe I made a mistake? Uhm, weird. But wait a minute, perhaps the marker is trying to escape; what do you say, Adrian?” Spencer said, looking at Adrian’s face, reaching his ear, and pulling the marker. The class erupted in howls, ovations and questions about how he did it.
Max couldn't help but remember when she met Spencer and the magic trick he performed for Sammy at that time. Her heart fluttered at the memory. That man was full of surprises, and she likes that. The awkward, tall, lanky, and shy guy managed to maintain a group of children entertained and interested, making something so simple as a magic trick and showing them how his job was at the same time.
Was she falling for him? Yes. And maybe too fast - considering that she wanted to keep it slow. What she didn't know was he was falling for her as fast as she for him. she wouldn’t find out yet, but the spark continued growing between them.

it has been a month since i broke things off with max. the amount of regret i have is so much. no one knows except max, her husband, and myself. none of my co-workers know, but i work with profilers so they probably suspect something is up. in fact, hotch apparently figured something out. one day, he pulled me aside
in the eye of a hurricane
there is quiet
for just a moment
a yellow sky
“reid, what has been going on?”
“i cheated on her hotch”
“who did you cheat on her with?”
“her sister”
hotch had a look of disappointment on his face.
“why did you do it, reid?”
i told hotch what happened, and he had an even more disappointed look on his face.
“what are you going to do about it, reid?”
“i’ll figure something out, but i don’t want her to know just yet. we just had tom.”
hotch gave me an ultimatum.
“if you don’t tell her by the end of the week, i will tell her, understand?”
i nodded and left his office. on my way home, i thought about what i would do, then an idea popped into my head.
i'll write my way out
overwhelm them with honesty
this is the eye of the hurricane, this is the only
way i can protect my legacy

My 2nd request for 100 word Drabble, if possible, phrase ‘You’re adorable, god I love you’ with pairing of Maxcer. ( I just think they’re so cute!)
Thank you. Peace.
Reid lifts the lid of the carefully wrapped box and pulls out a hand-knit, elaborate reindeer sweater. One that precisely matches the oversized one she’s wearing.
“Ta-da!” Max says, grinning. “My friend in the department made them! I thought we could wear them to Rossi’s Christmas party.”
Reid stares at the sweater and then at her, lost for words. Max’s eyes widen. “Oh no. Oh it’s too much, isn’t it? I knew I should’ve just gotten you a book or something normal, I was the one who wanted to take everything so slow and here I am giving you the weirdest gift ever but I know you don’t have many good Christmas memories so I thought th–”
A nervous blush colors her cheeks pink as she rambles in that silly sweater that somehow looks so good on her and he just can’t help but reach out and pull her into her arms. “You’re adorable,” he laughs. “God, I love you. And it’s not too much. It’s perfect.”

Coffee and Contemplation (Spencer Reid x Maxine Brenner)
Summary: A casual coffee date turns into a lesson about profiling and attention to detail
Word Count: 1,770
Tumblr media
Spencer flits about his kitchen nervously, noticing the crumbs that have accumulated under the toaster and the coffee stains that riddled the too-sticky counter. Max doesn’t seem to take any notice to the pile of junk mail sitting on top of the kitchen counter, though Spencer was astonished about how she could brush it off, his detailed brain going into overdrive as he kept finding other ways to occupy his attention and his anxieties.
“Coffee?” He offers, already up and out of his chair to put on the kettle.
“Please” Max lilts as she tucks herself into one of the thrift store chairs and pokes around the various newspapers that Spencer had read earlier that morning, thumbing around until she found a crossword puzzle with only a few spaces filled in.
“Ah, so you consider yourself to be something of a Cruciverbalist?” Spencer asks, feeling genuinely curious to learn more things about Maxine as this was officially their fifth coffee date (their eighth date overall and the third time that Max had been inside his apartment).
Max stops scribbling her answers down and looks at Spencer with raised eyebrows. “In laymen’s terms please?” She asks sarcastically, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
“Someone who is skillful in creating and solving crossword puzzles” Spencer reveals, giving her the same kind of closed-mouth smile he often gave in the instances where he thought he said too much.
“Oh god no” Max laughs, taking the steaming mug of coffee out of Spencer’s outstretched hand. Their fingers touch and Spencer can’t help but feel a jolt of electricity, though it may have been a product of him holding onto the hot ceramic for too long.
Spencer sits next to Max, not across from her, and he wonders if that was the right choice.
The two of them had met by chance in a park one afternoon on the rare day where Spencer wasn’t working. Now, he wasn’t one to believe in fate, be he knew fact. Probability, he figured, as if there were some sort of mathematical equation that could account for the two of them being at the same place at the same time.
Max shifts her body towards Spencer subconsciously as she grabs for the cream and sugar. Spencer can’t help but profile her, noting all the ways in which she was signaling her trust and comfort with him: Max’s legs were crossed in the seat of the chair and she leaned close enough so Spencer could read over her shoulder, though he’d already read the whole page four times over before she had even picked up her pen again. Max tucked her hair behind her ear as she filled in the squares for thirty-two down.
“You know, I can tell when you’re thinking too hard over there” Max chuckles lightly as she eyes Spencer from her peripherals, watching as he sat up stiff as a ramrod, like he was a kid getting caught for doing something he shouldn’t have been.
“H-how can you tell?”
“Are you asking me for a lesson in profiling, Dr. Reid?” Max raises an eyebrow at Spencer and he chuckles in response. Unlike most people who saw Spencer’s ability for long-winded rants as an annoying hindrance or a distraction, Max tended to enjoy just listening to him talk, bracing herself for whatever speech was in store for her with a sarcastic, yet adoring utterance of ‘The doctor’s in…’. That’s what she called him when he was being smart like that, “The Doctor”.  Max always felt like she learned something from Spencer, and she appreciated his abundance of knowledge (even if it’s delivery was often ill-timed). But the idea that Spencer could learn something from her barely seemed to cross Max’s mind.
“Try it, let’s see…SSA Brenner” Spencer gets up from his chair quickly, moving to sit across the table from Max like it was an interrogation room and she was talking to an unsub. He sits up straight again and laces his fingers together, trying to look calm and cavalier but really coming across as the opposite. “Profile me” There’s a taunting quality to Spencer’s words that makes Maxine nervous and excited at the same time.
“Spencer Reid, if that’s even your real name!” Max starts out dramatically with a boisterous laugh, completely unsure of how Spencer and his team were able to conduct these kinds of interviews so seamlessly.
Spencer laughs, his foot somehow finding hers under the table. He taps the toe of his well-worn shoe against hers, “C’mon, take it seriously. How are you going to get information out of this guy?” He puts on his fake-tough face and Max tries her best to collect herself.
“I already have it.”
Spencer raises a curious eyebrow. “You already have the information?”
“Yup” Max looks smug as she gazes at Spencer from across the table.
“Well…” Spencer starts, trying to offer her a piece of useful advice but falling short. He wasn’t used to being the one in the hot seat, being profiled by a beautiful woman who kept getting more and more intriguing to him with every morsel she revealed about herself. “How do you know he’s telling the truth?”
“Body language, the oldest tell in the book” Max reveals again, her tone even and confident and absolutely puzzling to Spencer.
“Body language” Spencer repeats in a barely-there whisper.
“You’ve been bouncing your knee since you sat down across from me. You weren’t doing that when you were sitting in this chair” Max gestures to the now-empty seat next to her with a sly smile before she continues. “Now that’s a nervous tick if I ever did see one. Possibly a sign of over-caffeination, but you don’t have to be in the FBI to realize that something…or someone, is making you nervous”
Spencer catches himself before he can start bouncing his knee up and down again, suddenly feeling very vulnerable. “Is that it? You catch on to one nervous tick and suddenly it’s the key to the whole mystery, case closed?” Max shakes her head no.
“Also, if you didn’t have anything to hide, you wouldn’t be trying so hard to sit up straight. Your posture is painfully proper, and Spencer, no offense, but you slouch too much” A hint of a smile plays on the corner of Max’s lips.
Spencer can’t seem to find a comment to make about that one.
“You do this thing when you’re thinking too hard, furrowing your eyebrows together until it looks almost painful.” Max finds herself leaning across the table, reaching an arm out to gingerly caress Spencer’s face and smooth out the wrinkle in his brow with the gentle pad of her thumb. “You’re trying to put all of the pieces together and it’s like I can hear your wheels turning but I don’t have any idea what’s going on in your head.” Max gives Spencer a sad sort of smile as she settles back into the chair across from him.
“Everything” Spencer says quietly. “Everything is going on in my head always and sometimes I don’t know how to stop it.” The sudden step towards vulnerability makes Max look up suddenly, accosted by the unabashed honesty that Spencer was giving her.
“Well, maybe if you focus on the ‘good everything,’ the ‘bad everything’ won’t seem so scary in comparison” She shrugs. It seems easier said than done. Spencer had been working with the Behavioral Analysis Unit for over a decade and had probably seen more pain and suffering in one week than Max would see in her entire life.  It was probably silly of her to think that the good could outweigh the bad and she would admit that, but she had always been a glass half-full type of person.
“The good everything…” Spencer repeated, mulling it over like he would with a case detail, trying to pick out the patterns and the inconsistencies, trying his best to recall what stuck out to him as being important and why. “Okay I got something”
“Hit me” Max chuckles, leaning closer to Spencer from her spot across the table.
“When I first met you, you were wearing a light blue sweater and that little gold necklace you always wear” His hazel eyes trace over the sharp planes of her collarbones, the necklace’s gold pendant gleaming in the mid-afternoon light. “We bought soft pretzels at the park and you ordered yours with extra salt. You can never get the coffee-to-cream ratio right and that’s why you haven’t touched your coffee in approximately six minutes”
Max laughs and pushes her too-light mug of coffee to the side, resting her chin on top of her hand as she continued to listen to Spencer.
“You always wear shoes that make you taller—“ Max goes to cut off Spencer with an explanation that he already knows, so he holds up a slender finger and continues: “When you were younger, your sister Michelle said that taller shoes would make you look more mature, and you’ve been running with that ever since.” He smiles shyly as he looks up at Max and notices the blush that was threatening to creep up her neck.
Max knew that because of his eidetic memory, he was a very detail-oriented person, but she foolishly assumed that he used his skills the most for work or the reading he did in his downtime. To have all of his detailed recollections be aimed at her made her nervous, she could feel the butterflies taking flight in her stomach and felt a juvenile sense of giddiness in her chest every time Spencer’s eyes met hers. She felt seen, but more importantly she felt known.
“So I guess we’re both pretty good profilers, huh?” Max smiles as she gazes up at Spencer, her foot resting against his under the table.
In a swift moment, Spencer quietly pushes himself out of his chair and rounds the kitchen table to sit next to Max, just like they were earlier. His long arm comes to circle around her shoulders and she instinctually moves to rest her head in the crook of his neck. “Definitely a promising young candidate for the BAU” Spencer jokes, pressing a kiss to her temple and picking up the ballpoint pen that lay resting on the table, turning his attention to the still mostly-blank crossword puzzle.
Three-letter word for someone or something beautiful. Spencer bites at the end of his pen before scribbling his answer.
