Golden amboyna burl 🌞🤩 Usually the grain on this stock is too unstable to use for a full length holder like this, but the piece of wood here grew perfectly to have all the crazy burls at one end with some straighter grain at the other. That straighter grain was in just the right spot to be strong enough for the tail section. I’ve got a bunch more amboyna from this same batch that will be great for two part holders, and if you really love it, I can dig through and see if there’s another section with some straighter grain that could work for a full length. It’s really gorgeous stuff, lightweight, and I love that warm golden tone 💛

I don't mind telling you that this one nearly kicked my butt! Turns out that longer passages are easier as minor compressions or extensions of the letter forms can help hide problems with centering. With just six words spread over four lines, there is VERY little room for error. The Textura Quadrata is done with a 2.5mm Pilot Parallel Pen loaded with Thornton's Oxblood over as 2:4:2 guide. The Spencerian is done with a titanium Zebra G nib fitted into a Michael Sull oblique pen holder and iron gall ink over a 2:1:2 guide with a 2.5mm x-height. @pen.swordsman chatted me yesterday to find out about a used holder he picked up that he thought was one of mine. It is. It’s a French walnut order from a couple years ago. I looked back through my feed and I don’t think I ever shared photos of it from when it was new, so I thought it would be fun to show how it looked fresh off the work bench vs today. I always enjoy seeing what people make with my holders. I’m happy to see this one used for some lovely Spencerian from Gordon 😊

Every month, I pick a new script to practice. December 2019 was Textura Quadrata, January 2020 was Copperplate, February 2020 was Uncial. This month, I settled on Spencerian. I’ve found a whole bunch of photos of holders I never got around to sharing, so I figured I’d start posting some of them since I’ve had the time to dig through them all now 😅

This curly redwood is from a little bit ago. It’s got a nice subtle wave to it and I really like the grain. I’m pretty sure I’ve got quite a bit more of it, so thinking I might put it on the list to make a readymade holder from. Redwood is always so pretty 😍

Penholder TBT 😄 I really love these stained buckeye pieces. I’m pretty sure I don’t have any more of the blueish ones like this, but I might have to dig around and see if I have any other colors left that are long enough to make more holders like this.

This is mahogany. I feel like it gets overlooked sometimes because it’s not super flashy, but one of my everyday use holders is mahogany. It’s lightweight and has a warmth to it that just feels good every time I pick it up 😊

Things have slowed down a lot for me with pretty much all wedding work on hold with the covid-19 situation, so I’ve been spending time catching up on a bunch of business admin work that’s been on the back burner.... like organizing all my photo files! I’ve been going through and filing everything, and finding tons of things I never got around to sharing.

I came across these photos showing the gorgeous surface of highly polished lignum vitae, and the greenish patina it develops over time and light exposure. In the first photo with the two holders, the bottom one is my personal holder that I made several years ago. The top one was a freshly carved custom order. You can see it doesn’t have as much of the green tone evident in it yet.

The second photo is a closeup showing the surface and grain of that freshly carved holder. Lignum vitae is amazing wood. It’s so dense and oily it really doesn’t need a finish of any kind to protect it from ink and water. Instead, I put all the effort into polishing the raw wood. It feels (and smells!) amazing! It’s definitely one of my favorite woods 😍💐
