Der er nu gået over femten år siden det andet kapitel af Beyond Good & Evil blev annonceret. Det har slået rekorden for den længste arbejdsgang et spil nogensinde har haft

"Jade var hendes navn og heltegerninger blev hendes sagn. Beyond Good & Evil er gået over i historien som en kult-klassiker, som faldt hen ved vejsiden som Ubisoft besluttede sig for at fokuserer på langvarige serier og service-spil. Der er nu gået over femten år siden det andet kapitel af Beyond Good & Evil blev annonceret. Det har slået rekorden for den længste arbejdsgang et spil nogensinde har haft, en rekord der tidligere tilstod det fjerde spil i Duke Nukem-serien, Duke Nukem Forever. Ubisoft fastholder dog at spillet fortsat er undervejs, og kun tager så lang tid fordi spillet skal være helt og så aldeles perfekt. Historien fortæller os dog, at netop den her slags langvarige udviklingsforløb sjældent gør noget godt ved et spils produktion eller det færdige resultat. Her i Videospilsmagasinet har vi allerede fremlagt en række af de spil der har lidt under en tumultarisk og langvarig udviklingscyklus; Anthem, Final Fantasy XIV, No Man’s Sky og så fremdeles. Foruden Duke Nukem Forever førnævnt, kan nyere spil som Cyberpunk 2077 snildt skrives på listen også. Beyond Good & Evil 2 har dog samtlige af disse slået på målstregen hvad angår produktionstid, kaotisk udvikling og tovtrækkeri i medierne.

Førend det gode og det onde

Det bliver ikke helstegt pattegris alligevel

Her begynder problemtiden dog også. Henover de næste fem år, skyder det frem med modsigende historier og rygter om henholdsvis Michel Ancel og Ubisofts presseafdeling. Den ene hævder spillet er godt undervejs, den anden trækker i land. Rygtemøllen rullede endda så kraftigt og fortalte, at Ancel end ikke var ansat ved Ubisoft Montpellier mere. Indtil E3 2017, hvor vi alle sammen endelig fik klarhed. Her blev det afsløret at spillet slet ikke var et fortsættelse, som ellers havde været fortalt tilbage i 2008 og 2009, men derimod en forgænger for det første spil. Spillet var designet så storslået som muligt, og ville ankomme til samtlige platforme… på en fortsat ukendt dato.

Til E3 2018 skete der så noget mærkværdigt; noget en hel spilpresse tilsyneladende kollektivt har ladet gå i glemmebogen igen, for det er sjældent blevet nævnt siden. Beyond Good & Evil 2 fik en ny officiel trailer, med stor ståhej, og Ubisoft afslørede ligeså et samarbejde med skuespilleren Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s firma HITRECORD for at crowdsource baggrundsbilleder og mindre grafiske virkemidler til spillet. Et projekt der blev solgt stort som at invitere publikum indenfor, til at være med at udvikle selve spillet, men mere eller mindre havde ordlyden af at alle der donerede deres kunst ikke blot opgav rettighederne, men ligeså heller ikke ville blive betalt for det. Folk skævede til hinanden, og her, ti år efter at fortsættelsen blev annonceret, var der stadig ingen lanceringsdato eller gameplay. Ifølge HITRECORDs officielle hjemmeside laver de ikke kommercielle produktioner mere, og har åbenbart ikke gjort det i lang tid, så om Gordon-Levitt overhovedet er involveret mere er uvist. Siden dengang har der derfor været radio stilhed; i hvert fald hvad selve spillet angår, for samtlige af de store navne der har været knyttet til hvad man vist roligt kan kalde evighedsprojektet nu om dage, har sandelig rykket meget på sig sidenhen.

Det er ingen kontrovers at hævde at Ubisoft ikke er et populært firma i øjeblikket. I 2019 fremlagde de deres investorplaner om at skabe spil som langvarige serviceorganer, der kunne fastholde spilleren i det samme spil så lang tid som muligt. En tendens der betød vedvarende betalte opdateringer, udvidet indhold og ekstra lir; det lød spændende på papiret, men den virkelighed videospil befinder sig i fortæller en anden, mere bagklog historie. Ubisoft var ikke interesseret i den klassiske spilformular mere. Spil var ophørt med at færdigt produkt; spil var nu en kontinuerlig service. I modsætning til det første Beyond Good & Evil. Mange så på med bekymring som dette blev standarden ikke blot for Ubisoft, men sidenhen overtog spilmarkedet totalt. Imens dette stod på, var der fortsat ingen nys om Beyond Good & Evil 2, udover at Michel Ancel, producer og hovedmand, rent faktisk forlod Ubisoft på dette tidspunkt. Det blev ikke blot ved rygtet denne gang. Nogen ville sige for at undgå det bjerg af forfærdelige anklager om krænkelser, ydmygelser og dårlige arbejdsmiljø der voksede en skygge over hans tilstedeværelse. Han selv hævder det var for at involvere sig i noget mere givtigt end spilindustrien. Det efterlader uanset evighedsmaskinen Beyond Good & Evil 2 i et noget usikkert lys, og den eneste egentlige spiljournalist i verden, Jason Schreier, har sidenhen kaldt det “vaporware”; en betegnelse der hentyder et produkt der er blevet annonceret til offentlighed, men aldrig bliver færdigt eller aflyst, og derved syner hen til historiens glemsel.

Mit eget bud står på to pæle; for det første, at spillet har været omdrejningspunkt for meget tovtrækkeri og kaos, at den “day zero”-tilstand Beyond & Good Evil 2 har befundet sig i over fem år er fastgroet. Der er hverken hoved eller hale hvor spillet overhovedet skal begynde sin produktion. For det andet, passer det design som det tidligere spil var bygget på slet ikke ind i Ubisofts kerneprincipper mere. Beyond Good & Evil, det første, var et færdigt, afsluttet singleplayerspil der kunne gennemføres og ligges til side. Det Ubisoft der udgav det spil, som i forvejen ikke blev nogen salgssucces, deler kun navn med det nuværende Ubisoft som det eneste. De to firmaer kunne ikke være mere forskellige. Af samme årsag, og som bevidnet i de mange underlige påfund spillets markedsføring er blevet udsat for, forestiller jeg mig at der er stor fokus på hvordan Beyond Good & Evil 2 kan blive et serviceorgan og samtidig hvordan man undgår den marketingskatastrofe det vil føre til. Schreier har muligvis ret, når han omtaler spillet som forsvunden damp. Det er muligt at den kamp simpelthen ikke er umagen værd. Der er nu gået over en måned siden Beyond Good & Evil 2 slog Duke Nukem Forever, den førnævnte rekord i ikke at blive til noget endnu. Næsten 5300 dage siden den første trailer for spillet blev offentliggjort. Kommer der til at gå 5300 dage mere før spillet ser dagens lys? Jeg har ikke svaret. Mest bekymrende, tror jeg heller ikke Ubisoft har svaret.

The Different dialects of Irish

Although there are many different dialects of Irish, the language can broadly be divided into two main categories: Northern Irish and Southern Irish. A Wedding And (Almost) A Funeral

The following is based on a true story.

I only wish it had been Henry who was there to save my life that day.

Warning(s): near-death experience, throwing up, use of coarse language.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love weddings. They don’t feel like days, they feel like moments. Too fun, too fast. The chance to wear that new dress that’s been hanging in the closet since you bought it on sale on a whim. Overly familiar conversations with people you have never met, and will never meet again. Confetti, champagne and drunk dancing. What’s not to love? On October 5th, I found out.

As two people began their life together, mine almost ended. Not in a Lifetime movie, should-have-been-me way. Quite literally.

It was the morning of Owen and Grace’s wedding, and I was going to be late. I was sure of this for two reasons; one, I’m an incredibly careful driver, and two, I was stuck behind a very large flock of sheep. This is exactly what happens when you decide to get married in a gorgeous countryside manor in the middle of nowhere. And exactly the kind of thing that would happen to me.

Owen and I met at our local youth club a million years ago and only hung out a handful of times before he left to join the Tanks Regiment. Apart from the odd Facebook message on birthdays and Christmases, we haven’t really spoken much over the years. Still, it’s nice to know I made a lasting impression on someone I suppose. So there I was, tired, hungry and over-caffeinated in the name of love.

Sometimes I’m thankful for some of the ridiculous things that have happened to me. This was one of those times. A few years before till death did I almost part, I had spent a cool September afternoon on a farm in Yorkshire herding pigs and sheep.

Believe it or not, this wasn’t some Jane Eyre quarter-life-crisis where I needed to run off and yell across the moors to regain some sanity. This was my cousin’s Hen Do. It started with a demure afternoon tea and ended in mud-splashed, cocktail-fuelled chaos.

To this day, Annie’s husband believes she’s teetotal. The unfortunate stain on the cream carpet of our rented Harrogate apartment says otherwise. I haven’t been able to look her poor unsuspecting husband in the eye since. Not that I’m a terrible liar. It was just too fucking funny.

With the memory of that crazy day clear in my mind, I jumped out of the car and used my skills as an amateur shepherdess to shoo the huddled flock onto the side of the road, which was a lot harder to pull off in five inch heels and a tight dress. Sadly, the sheep were in no mood to be moved. With splashes of mud on my heels, I got back in the car.

I was definitely going to be late.

It took me half an hour to get to the pub, where Owen’s uncle Graham enthusiastically waved me onto the car park. It was a dull grey stone building with windows that looked like they’d be blown out in a mild wind. Inside, the oak beams filled the room with a strong musty scent, but in its own way it was rather charming.

Dressed in their designer dupes (although I was sure one or two must have been the real thing), everyone chatted away while I sat by the window nursing my short Americano. It was my Valedictorian dinner all over again. The only difference was that someone was definitely going to dance with me tonight. Someone middle-aged and balding who stank of beer and cigarettes, but a dancefloor date nonetheless.

One of the bridesmaids made a beeline for me, her buttercup yellow satin dress rustling loudly as she rushed over.

‘Bride or Groom?’ She squeaked, grinning at me.

‘Groom.’ I shrugged. ‘Owen’s an old friend.’

‘Graham asked me to grab you. We can’t have you sitting here on your own!’ She bobbed up and down on the spot and nodded at the small gathering of guests chatting behind us. ‘Come and join everyone.’

Before I could even open my mouth to say no, she’d grabbed my hand and yanked me off the chair. I immediately felt sorry for the person who had to clean up the spilled coffee and biscuit crumbs I left behind. I made awkward conversation and quickly excused myself, tottering off to the toilets to wipe my heels.

When I headed back out to Graham and the bridesmaid at the bar, I was ambushed by one of the largest dogs I’d ever met. His tail wagged madly as he sniffed my legs, then he put his paws on my stomach, begging for attention, which I was more than happy to give him. Even if it meant getting long strands of black and white hair stuck to my tights, making me look like a very well-dressed she-wolf.

‘Kal! Down!’ A deep voice commanded.

Looking up from the adorable face of my new furry friend, I was virtually motorboating his owner.

‘I apologize for this wild bear and his bad manners.’ The man chuckled, petting Kal’s head. ‘I’m Henry. My brother Nik’s in the wedding party. He sent me to round everyone up, but it looks like Kal’s already doing the job for me.’

‘Well, of all the strangers to be approached by in a pub, I can’t say I mind this one.’

I was trying to sound aloof, like one of those women in rom-coms. I found myself weirdly confident in new social situations, which I put down to my theatre kid days. As a child, I was both painfully shy and eccentric. A walking oxymoron. At this particular moment, I was just a moron. What was I doing with my face? Did my laugh seem forced? Why was I overanalyzing everything like a floundering fifteen year old?

Why? Because Henry was a man.

If anyone ever plans to trademark that word, he deserves all the credit.

Henry was the epitome of a prep school dreamboat. I couldn’t get over how bloody tall he was. Broad shoulders, big hands, neatly-tamed dark curls and a strong jawline. When he smiled, his chin dimpled. He oozed classic Hollywood charm. Had it been any other man, I would have seen the little patch of brown in his startlingly blue eyes as a flaw. Proof that there was definitely something wrong with him. But on Henry, it was like looking at a single fleck embedded in marble. Uniquely beautiful. Uniquely Henry.

I’d never met anyone I could call ‘unique’ in a way that didn’t mean ‘asshole’. So naturally, I wondered how long it was going to take before I found out he was a bastard. Pessimism has always been my strong suit.

I leaned down to scratch the thick fur between Kal’s ears. His head tilted beneath my hand, and when I stopped, he nudged me with his wet nose.

‘Come on, trouble.’ Henry clipped Kal’s lead back onto his collar and shook it to encourage him. ‘See you in church.’

Even in my (thin) jacket, the church was cold. It probably didn’t help that I was also wearing an off-the-shoulder dress. But damn it, I looked good. At least until my shoulders started shaking.

When Owen and Grace opened their mouths to exchange vows, my teeth chattered. I hunched against the pew, rubbing my arms to try to keep warm. It worked long enough to get me through the ceremony, but I dreaded going back outside for photographs. My feet were so numb I was convinced I was going to fall flat on my face in front of the whole congregation. Thankfully I didn’t.

At the reception, the warm food soothed me, but I slowly began to notice my stomach getting tighter with every bite. Not wanting to seem rude, I finished every plate, fighting the urge to contort my face as the pain and bloating set in. I figured this was because I’d only had an apple for breakfast. Nobody eats breakfast before a wedding, right? I just needed to go dance it out.

Owen, Grace and Uncle Graham pulled me into an impromptu circle as everyone skanked to ‘Come On Eileen’. My stomach lurched. Henry and Nik joined the circle. I started sweating profusely. It was just the heat from the lights, I convinced myself. It was totally fine. I was totally fine.

When everyone had lined up to row their imaginary boats and slap the floor to ‘Oops Upside Your Head’, I was sandwiched between Henry and a man who was sweating even more profusely than I was, which I didn’t think was possible.

Apparently I made a witty remark. I only remember Henry’s booming laugh and the firmness of his grip as he hauled me onto my feet. If this had been a rom-com, he probably would have kissed me at that very moment. Instead, I was living in a disaster movie – my throat burned and I bolted to the bathroom.

I threw up with such force that I was convinced my retching was loud enough for the whole venue to hear. So hard that I was actually crying. I was a complete mess. Was it food poisoning? Maybe. But if it was food poisoning, why did I want to tear my heavily beating heart right out my chest?

I cleaned myself up and headed back to my table for a sip of water. Henry was at the bar with his brother and a few groomsmen, inhaling a pint of Guinness. He caught my eye and came over to the table, leaning against one of the chairs in that sexy, nonchalant way men do when they’re about to deliver a shitty pick-up line.

‘You doing okay?’ He wasn’t flirting, he was concerned. ‘You look pale.’

I was shaking again. I choked a little. ‘I’m fine. Probably just tired.’

‘Are you sure?’ He leaned in closer. He smelled of alcohol, oud and vanilla.

I was intoxicated in more ways than one. I was also very fucking tired and very fucking sick.

‘I think you should get some air. Come on.’

He led me into the hallway where we sat on a bench in awkward silence. My jacket was slung over my shoulders, but it wasn’t much help. My chest heaved as my heartbeat slowed. I was definitely going to pass out. This was it, my twisted fairytale moment. I was going to die dressed to the nines next to a Disney Prince.

He pressed the back of his hand to my forehead. God, he was warm. I needed his warmth. He heaved a sigh and his brow furrowed. ‘Oh fuck.’

The word 'fuck' seemed far more elegant when it fell from his lips. His gently curved, totally inviting lips that I couldn’t kiss. It was at this point that I wondered if God was playing a cruel joke on me. Or maybe this was a test. Whatever it was, I wasn’t happy about it.

‘What?’ I panted.

‘Stay here. I’m going to get Nik.’ Was all he said before he dashed through the double doors behind us.

I was feeling weaker by the minute. Colder by the minute. My nails were blue. I wanted to close my eyes so badly.

As it turned out, Nik was a Royal Marine. He’d seen a lot of shit, so it took him all of five seconds to tell me that I was suffering from hypothermia.

Everything I knew about hypothermia, I learned from my Dad, who used to be a member of a Mountain Rescue team. Hypothermia was something that happened to men who got lost on high peaks. Why was it happening to me in the middle of a wedding? All logic had apparently been thrown out with the remains of the confetti.

‘I’ll look after her, you get back to the guys.’ Henry was already taking off his suit jacket and draping it over me. ‘Jesus, you’re burning up.’

‘How? I’m freezing.’ I managed to stutter. My heartbeat quickened.

‘This is what happens. Just breathe slowly.’

I gave him a meek nod and tried my best to puff out the tiniest bit of air. I was fading away, I could feel it. Puff, puff, puff. Short, staccato breaths. He rubbed my back and I leaned into him.

‘Sorry.’ I tried to laugh.

‘What for?’

‘Probably dying on you.’

‘Don’t be daft.’ Henry shook his head. ‘You’ll be alright. Trust me.’

I did.

Nik returned to check on me with a staff member in tow. Dial nine-nine, and if I passed out, dial nine again.

They escorted me to my room, where I insisted I could take care of myself. Nik and Henry were having none of it. They brought extra blankets. The staff brought piping hot tea and then left the room.

I was cocooned, clutching a steaming mug and still felt like I was encased in a block of ice.

‘I’ve got this.’ Henry nodded. ‘I’ll update you in a bit.’

Nik left the room.

Alone in a hotel room with a handsome stranger. God, I wish this story was sexier.

At this point I was fading in and out of consciousness, so the details are a little fuzzy. What I definitely remember is feeling Henry’s big, warm body against mine through the thick duvet. His large hands on my skin. The spark of his touch. His voice, deep, soft and low as he told me I was going to be okay. I trusted him. I believed him. I wanted to kiss him.

I wanted to throw up again.

An empty, bubbling growl rose from my stomach and I raced to the bathroom, gagging the whole way. I couldn’t feel a single part of my body, but I knew I was running. Henry leapt up and followed me, holding my hair back as I hung my head over the toilet. In between dry retching, I wondered if he had any sisters. Or a girlfriend. He probably had a girlfriend. A beautiful and very much alive girlfriend. I shelved all my potential first date questions and scrambled to my feet.

‘I’m sorry.’ I said again.

‘It’s okay. My brothers have been worse on nights out.’

I wiped my mouth with a towel. ‘You’ve held your brothers’ hair back while they yartz?’

Henry laughed. ‘She’s making jokes again. Feeling better?’

‘Maybe. Let’s not jinx it, though.’

‘Sorry.’ He held up his hands in apology. ‘Can I get you some more water?’

‘Sleep. I need sleep.’

‘Of course. I’ll make myself scarce, then.’

He left the bathroom and I shimmied out of my shoes and tights, peering around the door.

He was gone.

I could finally feel my arms and legs again. But I knew it wasn’t going to last long, so I threw on my pajamas faster than a firefighter on call (probably) and dove back into bed.

I woke up to the gentle sound of birdsong and a bitter taste in my mouth. My head was pounding. My body felt weak, but warmer. Lifting up on my haunches, I carefully slipped out of bed, brushed my teeth and started to get dressed. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a scrap of paper on the vanity.

Lavender Petals - Part 1

Summary: As a child of the Greek Underworld, you often feel as see through as the ghosts you encounter so frequently. That is until, you meet the god of mischief who takes an immediate interest in you, recanting everything you thought you knew about life in the realm of the living.

You sat undisturbed with your legs dangling over the ledge of the spiraling staircase, your arms resting on the railing, and your head resting on your arms.

Your gray, flowy gown was bundled up beneath you, though you barely noticed enough to bother adjusting it.

The chandelier suspended from the ceiling suddenly began to sway gently, and you followed its tranquil movements, admiring the twinkle and glint of each crystal.

Your eyes began to droop, and you smiled sleepily; at least your eternal prison solitarily confined in a haunted mansion wasn’t entirely lonesome.

As a daughter of Melinoe – goddess of ghosts, nightmares, and madness– you’ve always felt more comfortable around beings beyond this realm and they’ve always felt comfortable around you, always treating you as one of them.

They never bothered you, but rather would keep you company in subtle ways like the swinging of a chandelier, or cool breezes when all the windows are closed.

The other benefit to being a child of the underworld means your powers include that of ghostly mimicry, otherwise known as the power to use the abilities of ghosts.

Such an uncommon form of fighting had often granted you the upper hand in combat, even if it meant that only a select few teachers could train you. Given that you only trusted a select few people though, you were alright with that.

The only true downside in your eyes to being a child of Melinoe - a Greek goddess - is that you’d accidentally fallen in love with a Norse god.

It had been about 2 years since you met him. You’d been invited to the Norse realm of Asgard for a ball as part of the Royal House of Hades given that Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, is your grandmother.

The night began casually enough; you in a gray, floor-length ball gown with a gold trim and your uncle, Nico and his boyfriend, Will, accompanying you in their respective tuxes.

Although Nico being a son of Hades does technically make him your step-uncle, he’s actually 3 years younger than you although neither of you ever seem to want to acknowledge this bizarre component to your relationship. The aspects that make up mythological family life are too outrageous to ever dwell on for long.

The Asgardian palace towered to the Heavens, so to speak, and all that glittering gold had to be making Hades jealous, or at least giving him some ideas.

The ball room was elegantly designed with an array of whimsical flowers that contested even those in Persephone’s garden and the shimmering chandeliers showered the floor in a spectacular light.

You didn’t linger in the ballroom for long, however, since you naturally preferred quiet, more lonesome atmospheres. Sometimes you almost fooled yourself into believing you were one of the ghosts you spent so much time around.

While Nico and Will talked and drank to their hearts content, you made your way to the balcony outside to sip your wine and admire the stars and galaxies occupying the deep, blue vastness of the universe.

Though the Asgardians knew how to drink, they struggled to keep up with you Greeks. Spend enough time with Dionysus, God of wine and parties, and they’d be able to finish a whole glass of red in one breath, as well.

Even still, you laid low given that you were on a foreign planet and your much younger uncle was in the middle of being coerced by his boyfriend to join in a dance-off with some young Norse gods and goddesses. It was a weird night.

“Not up for partying, I see.” A beguiling voice remarked.

You jumped a little, startled out of your enchantment of the skies, and spilling some of the wine onto your dress. “Shit.” You muttered under your breath.

Without looking up and instead attempting to rub off the wine, but only blotching it, you hastily replied, “Uh, no. Sorry, just not really in the mood.”

“A Greek? Not in the mood for a party?” The voice inquired. At this point, you were too frustrated to deal with the red stain on your gown and you glanced up with a slight irritation at the speaker.

What you saw made you freeze and for your words of retaliation to get caught in your throat. Your endearment of the dead has left you ill-prepared for this glorious being of life standing in front of you.

He looked like an image of what the dead aspire to be; black hair that fell to his shoulders, a cold, mischievous aura surrounding him, and pale skin that somehow still appeared healthy.

The only real difference being his eyes. They were icy and alive and you felt as if he were reading your mind right then and there.

You must’ve been staring for too long for after a moment he lightly chuckled and said, “Seems not.” He rested his hands on the balcony railing and gazed out at the city of Asgard.

He was clearly high up on the royal spectrum from the almost bored way he took in the landscape, as if all the riches in the nine realms still weren’t enough.

“What’s your name?” you inquire of him. You were intrigued to say the least and lacked the social etiquette to hide your curiosity.

He looked over at you with an almost electric feel to his eyes that you were sure he used to his advantage in most arguments.

“Loki Odinson,” he replied. “God of Mischief, prince of Asgard.” He extended a hand and when you obliged, he slipped your hand up to his lips and kissed you without breaking eye contact.

You didn’t know much about Loki, but this stolen kiss at least confirmed your suspicions of how charming he is.

You had heard of him before in passing, but regretfully hadn’t read up on him enough in a careless presumption that you wouldn’t be interacting with the royal family of Asgard, given how low your status was in the royal family of the Greek Underworld.

“Y/N Y/L/N,” you said, ignoring the butterflies in your stomach. “Daughter of Melinoe.” You said, withdrawing your hand that he had yet to let go of.

A slight understanding of why you were alone passed over him when you said your mother’s name. Though it wasn’t entirely common to know the deities of other myth lore, Loki was clearly wise enough to have done his research in anticipation of the Greeks arrival.

“So, what about you?” You asked. “Why aren’t you in there enjoying the dance?”

He looked at you then with an eyebrow raised and slight grin. He saw right through your sudden desire to change the subject but obliged anyways.

“My brother has taken on the responsibility of entertaining the guests, leaving me to do as I please.”

You nodded your head. You figured what he meant was that he felt there was no room left for him given his brother’s spacious persona.

You understood how he felt, never wanting to compete for attention yourself, but opted not to say anything given that the two of you had only just met.

You glanced back into the ballroom and immediately caught on to who Loki was talking about, seeing a robust man with golden locks and a crowd of people gathered around him as he told stories in a booming voice and chugged liquor.

Though it was clear this was Thor Odinson, the eldest son of Odin, you had a hard time spotting any sibling similarities between him and Loki. You turned your attention back to the balcony and noticed Loki watching you.

He didn’t appear shameful at all getting caught admiring you, but rather grinned, extended an arm to you, and asked a rather sudden and unexpected question: “Would you care to dance, love?”

After taking up on Loki’s offer, the two of you descended into the elegant ballroom. You weren’t exactly sure what compelled you to take his arm, but there was no going back now.

The second the two of you entered the hall, curious eyes shifted towards you and whispers snaked their way to your ears. You didn’t know much about the Asgardians’ view on their youngest prince, but clearly, he wasn’t as well adored as his brother.

When you made it to the dance floor, Loki spun you gently in front of him and pulled you in by the waist. You met his hand to the side and reached up with the other to hold his shoulder.

Your shy nature made it difficult to meet his eyes, but you could feel his icy gaze on you, unwilling to look away.

A new song commenced just as you remembered how inexperienced you were at dancing. It isn’t often that Underworld dwellers are invited to balls on Mount Olympus, and even when you are, you usually ended up wandering off on your own.

Loki must have caught on to the sudden panic in your eyes, for he leaned in and whispered: “Just follow my lead”.

You nodded and as he began to dance, you were sure to follow each precise step, carefully avoiding bumping into anyone around you.

It wasn’t long before the two of you fell in tune, learning the other’s rhythm. You soon gained enough confidence to look up from your feet and meet Loki’s eyes.

You were so focused on each other’s sophisticated steps and movements that you then failed to notice the rest of the guests trickling off of the dance floor until just the two of you were left.

His hand on your waist had subtly moved to your back so he could guide you right along with him. The fabric of your gown and the leather of his outfit were just about touching, given how close he had you pulled into him.

You continued to move together like that until the song came to an end. Your cheeks were noticeably flushed from both dancing and embarrassment as you quickly noticed all the guests watching you.

Loki hadn’t yet let go of your hand, but rather pulled it in with his and lowered into a bow. You followed his lead which was met with a polite applause from the crowd that had gathered.

As the crowd dispersed, Loki finally let go of you, and set his hands on your shoulders to lean in. He whispered in your ear, “Until next time, love” followed by a gentle kiss on your cheek. As he pulled away, your eyes met once more, his reflecting a small glimmer of mischief.

You then watched him leave the hall, undisturbed by his fellow Asgardians, until you felt a hand grab your shoulder to turn you around.

Nico and Will stood in front of you ready to ask an endless supply of questions in lieu of your recent affair, but your mind was elsewhere feeling as though you’d just woken up from a pleasantly stirring dream.
