I got back into yo-kai watch recently, I'm currently playing yo-kai watch blasters. :P
the fact that lloyds oni form is gold is so fucking funny. lloyd pops out of the womb, probably looking quite oni because he's a quarter oni. garmadon picks him up and proceeds to get blinded by the light reflecting off his golden baby. wu has mistaken baby lloyd for the nunchucks of lightning on more than one occasion. misako is frantically researching why her baby is gold and eventually just accepts it as one of those things.

I like how Dandadan sets the audience up to think Turbo Granny is just a pervert because she chases men, taunts them obscenely and steals their dicks and it seems played for entirely just freaky shock comedy until the reveal that she's (spoiler and content warning)
A yokai acting on the aimless collective wrath of multiple rape and murder victims (who form their own ghost that considers her its grandma) :(

*°◇■¤ SHAPE OF YOU ¤■◇°*
A/n: Yeah the same English VA voiced all these dudes, and his B-Day is TODAY!
Tbh though, I wanna take a break from this one sided infatuated hellhole I dug myself into and write for other series again, that aren't dubbed with him in it. The irony of me saying that when I wrote this of all things. I ❤️ that madman though. Ah, the mess of a crush!
Pairing: Adult! Makoto, Anos, Jiji, Mash, Nagumo, Mikey, Lighter, Jinwoo, Ryoji X Fem!Adult!Reader.
CW: SPOILERS FOR ALL THE FANDOMS INVOLVED SO BE PREPARED.
Characters aged up 21+. Isekaied reader. All shows coexist in this anime world AU.
SFW and NSFW CONTENT INVOLVED. Kinda headcanons/daily life with the various tagged dudes, mushy fluffy romance with eventual brief short smut. Voice kink, lovesick/lovestruck reader, reverse harem vibes.
Tumblr media
Getting reborn in a world choked full of anime characters would be any weeb’s greatest dream. Your inner wish finally gets granted, at last!
So many cameos, easter eggs, references serving the overstimulation you craved.
Urban dystopia, cyberpunk, fantasy, and even classic and modern day Japan structures this conglomeration that is the capital of this anime city in this anime world.
In one way or another, you yourself seek out such dashing men that all had their unique quirks and styles straight out of the gate. Even in this new life they still hold a place in your heart.
Unlike most leads in reverse harem stories, you wanted to embrace this fantasy. Your lovesick self literally gave off such an intense lovestruck aura as is. You crave that kind of affection and attention, in this life as the last.
Someway, somehow, it worked.
Your bois … them dudes … ah what a lineup.
Mash, the magicless exercise buff, secretly likes you watching him doing weight lifts with one hand and eating cream puffs with the other. While workouts with him are more casual, he still appreciates you wanting to bond over it, inspiring him to do his push ups and sit ups with you kissing him when his face gets close enough as his motivation and reward. That and sharing slash feeding each other cream puffs together whenever you get the chance.
“You don't have to dote on me so much. Even without magic, I will use all of my strength to keep you safe. And bake cream puffs for you every day. I'll dote on you all to show you just how much you mean to me.”
Jiji, the goofy quirky red-head that he is, despite the Evil Eye yokai of hatred using him as its vessel, slowly but surely wormed his way into your heart. The stupid jokes paired with those face expressions laced with the boundless energy he has despite the hell he's been through grew on you over time until his beaming smile got you turning to mush. Being able to wind down and relax when he started gaining control over his alternate self, taking naps with you got you being the big spoon for this cutie. Cuddles are inevitable.
“Your laugh is infectious. Getting you to smile is my daily goal. It really does make my day. Gets me smiling every single time. I never want this feeling to end. So let's have more bright filled days ahead together, Y/n~”
Lighter, the red scarfed honor bound Champion, rightfully won your heart with his protective romantic dorky self. Meeting each other through your shared friends that are legendary Proxies, you become entangled in each other's lives. Giving you rides on his motorbike went from convenient transport to enjoying the scenic drive together. Sharing some Nitro Fuel together as he quipped out some dorky puns all to make you smile. You keep him grounded in return. Kissing every single scar his past left him with, being able to let down his walls and be open with you, it all means so much.
“You can count on me to get the job done. Whatever it is, whenever you need me, I'm there. I'll fight for you until my dying breath. Hey now, don't cry. I'm not going anywhere. Not for a long time.”
Anos, the misfit that is the Demon King of Tyranny, exudes natural charm and strength that is indeed OP. Building bridges, ending divides, bringing everyone united in a new age for his descendants. So of course the strapping reincarnated man bewitched you as well. Sure he has his own group of comrades on the side – a harem in a sense from others perspective – but from his self awareness, you have an actual harem. He was amused, intrigued even, that you would see him as another potential mate, so he humored you. His parents were more than welcoming to meet a bride he wouldn't mind marrying one day. You're just that interesting to him.
“Did you really think that just because I was part of your little court, that I would be outdone by my competition? I'll be as savage as well as benevolent to my rivals. Why am I going along with it? Well … I'm enthralled by you, my lovely human.”
Nagumo, one of the strongest assassins there is, would deem crossing paths with you during a mission not as a coincidence but as fate. He felt light as a feather, walking on air, as he made small talk with you after finishing his tasks for the day, that elated smile that came with blood stains. The fact that you reciprocate his assassin lifestyle had the arrow of love striking him true, mirroring Sakamoto's reason for leaving the Order all to be with his own special someone. Introducing you to said former comrade at his convenience store came soon after.
“Getting close to me will put you at risk, no doubt. And I barely have time to see you as it is due to my job. But I'll gladly kill anyone that dares harm a hair on your pretty little head. I really like you, after all.”
Mikey, the leader of his own biker group, can be quite the handful. Being overprotective about keeping his family safe, blood bound and found, you were no exception. He'd do anything for you, day or night. He is as loyal as he is a kid at heart. He wears his heart on his sleeve in your honest opinion. Giving him PDA really lifts his spirits; loved fill squeezing hugs, smooching him senseless, and being a shoulder to cry on for those tough days.
“Oi. I'm grateful to you. Ya know that, right? When this city sees delinquents in a better light through the Tokyo Manji Gang, my brother's dream will finally become a reality. And I hope you'll be by my side when that happens. I can't imagine anything else worthwhile.”
Jinwoo, an E-rank hunter reawakened to become the next Shadow Monarch took the world and beyond by storm, sweeping all off their feet. Slaying magic beasts all around you to show off his growing strength and speed. Saving those that are genuinely worth it helped balance the OP aura he gave, winning your heart in his favor. Seeing his former self in you brought out his overprotectiveness, aiding in winning him over in turn. This Ruler rather carry you princess style himself than his shadow generals.
“We've both been at the bottom. But while I've been fortunate to have agency and power to lead a better life, you haven't been so lucky. If you wouldn't mind, I want to look after you. I … I care about you. Very much. I want to be there for you like you have been for me.”
Ryoji, the Appraiser of Nyx herself, could not believe it himself. He was back together with his friends, making new memories with this second chance. And he had you to thank for that. The anomaly that is many worlds meshing together to create this one has you literally radiating at its core, having him hone in on you. You're an angel in his eyes. Hence, serenading on the piano for you, affectionately swaying you over with his wise words about embracing life to the fullest, and wrapping his scarf around you for you both to share. You got Death wrapped around your finger.
“I didn't expect to be in the presence of an angel, yet here you are. Knowing you had a hand in making all this possible, allow me to thank you personally. Beneath this moon, beside this sea, will you share one dance with me?”
Makoto, the savior literally tied to Death itself, willingly gave up his life to save his world from the literal end. In this alternate life, he too had been given another chance to live a long life. And like his close friend, he gets drawn to your presence. But unlike the former, you're the affectionate one. Petting him, sharing headphones in exchange for letting him rest against you, even looking unto his big blue eyes had him blushing and ducking his head in embarrassment. This silent loner boi is not immune to your smitteness.
“You're strange. Putting yourself out there … because you like me? Sorry. I've had admirers before, but I've never wanted to ruin those friendships. So why …? Maybe Ryoji was right. You're like a kindred soul to us … to me. We've all died yet came back. All to meet one another. I've dealt with stranger things … but I don't mind. You, that is. I mean it.”
While they were all different, the similarities when it comes to their bond with you are all there.
Shaking their warm calloused hands, no other kind of handshake could ever hope to top it.
Those marvelous eyes fascinate you.
Their modest encouragement sends your heart ablaze.
The many things they do to make each day easier, comfy, worthwhile.
Their fingers rubbing sensually along your cranium down to your tense neck. Massaging the rest of your stressed sore body followed suit. Of course they'd flex for you as you return the kind act, giving their lean builds love bites and smooches in the process.
Your drained hum of thanks reaches their ears as you use their lap as your pillow. They would do the same if they're too drained to go to bed or they need your presence to cheer them up for whatever reason.
Their hand brushes through your hair strands, pushing them aside to trail along your flushed cheek, causing it to darken further because it's their touch.
Many times you fall asleep against them, whether leaning into their side or using their lap as a pillow, it always ends with them rearranging yourselves to sleep on the couch together with you on top on them or they carry you to bed and keeps you in their arms still as you cuddle amid la la land.
Their laughter, whether deep or light, is a musical score you cherish to hear much more.
Lounging together with you sitting up against his front, your legs in between his own, his arms wrapped around you, he held the console controller in your lap with his hands overlapping yours as you played whatever video games piqued both your interests.
Spotting you squeezing the life out of chibi plush doll versions of themselves always brought out their envy. But it was your comfort whenever you couldn't hug their real life counterparts due to work or any other occupying situations. But you do get the chance to see them again, cuddles and kisses come in tenfold.
Even being able to spend time with them along with their comrades and friends always ends up with you staying glued by their side.
Days turned to weeks and then months, for each passing moment you were interweaving a web of bonds that got you attached to these fine nine beings.
For they share the same voice.
God that voice …
Such versatility and tenor. So sultry, sensual, and sexy all at once. It should be a crime to sound that fine. Of course it will slide. That kind of voice times nine. Like a soul split into nine sublime forms.
Comforting words. Encouragement. Goofy impressions. The puns. Saying your name. Pet Names. Any and every word. You could never get enough.
Then there are the salacious moments.
Them whispering in your ears to utter any and all such things. Dirty, romantic, primal. Whatever suited the mood. Whichever made you both comfortable.
“Does my voice really make you come that much? Interesting~”
That exact sentence would become like a motto – a slogan perhaps – to these guys. Teasing you in that tempo and timbre all to make you melt. Never letting you live it down.
“The ways in which you talk to me~”
Your own tease earned you being pushed up against the wall, your free hand supporting you since your other hand was pinned behind your back. His free hand grasped your chin, tilting your face around all to devour you. Just one of many scenarios that play out between you and your many partners.
Your first time with each of them is equally special, ingrained into your mind and your core.
Whether decent or long, wide or thick, so much variety with every cock that stuffs up your needy pussy.
Smooth and sly or sculpted and rough are such fingers that get to touch you, trace patterns along your sensitive flesh.
To pinch and rub your pearls, leaving love bites on every inch of you to remind one another who you belong to.
Fondling and massaging your frame, suckling on your stretch marks along your fine as fuck dumpy, stuffing their fingers in both your mouths to lather up your essence, licking from your ass crack to your clit.
They all share the intoxicating crave for your addictive taste, devouring your cunt for hours on end, their faces squished between your quivering sweaty thighs, their noses buried in your pubic hair while they're sloppily making out as their dexterous fingers and skillful tongues went to work on having you come so many times.
Missionary, backshots, the mating press, against the wall, on the floor, across tables and couches, even on the roof — when there's a will there's a way.
They love replacing the pearls around your neck …
Titty fucking. Throat fucking. Ejaculating all over your sweaty sheen self. Jacking off through your thighs, your peachy hills, all to tease you so close to edge yet striving to be within you.
Of course, they let you have your way with them in kind. Their egos and hearts soar as you claim them, the bite marks and bruising sucks litter their lean firm vessels to match yours. The tattoos, the scars, those get you showering smooches like mad.
Whether hugging their waist or throwing them over their shoulders, they love to rub and grip your legs enough for fingertips to be left behind as your latch onto them is ironclad.
Weaving hands through each other's haphazard hair while tugging on them hair strands roughly amiss lust, interlocking their hands with yours that need that tether to keep hold onto through the hectic ride of orgasmic paradise.
Massaging your ever tight gummy caverns all to see your expressions of vulnerable passion, falling apart easily while stuffing their cream in you, hitting that sizzling bundle of nerves all to tip you over the edge.
Those feral groans, them unhinged moans, such breathless cries of euphoria with your name reading such a crescendo off their swollen wet mouths as they could never get enough of your vice grip firm enough to leave their fingerprints behind.
Your curling, squirming self crying and breathless as creamy goodness dripped down your valleys, their comforting warm bodies draping over your beautiful self, holding you while the highs of sex would soon calm down.
“Let me fight for you.”
“Laugh with you.”
“Cry with you.”
“Reshape the world for you.”
“Kill for you.”
“Protect you.”
“Rule with you.”
“Live life with you.”
“Love you.”
In this alternate universe, in a world full of vibrant people, with limitless possibilities and potential …
The shape of them — their very existences — ingrained in your type of mate. Partner. Perhaps the shape of their souls are all one in the same. All intense, driven and outrageous.
Maybe because of your preference in your former life. Through their voices all stemming from one. Perhaps your rooted desire for a significant other with that boundless voice created so many options and you finally hit the jackpot.
When the day comes you wake up amongst all nine men strewn about, bare to the bone the same as you, in sheen gleaming ecstasy, soiled sheets and pillows thrown about all over the spacious bedroom, as you smiled all dopey like at those peaceful sleeping dreamboats.
The shape of you might as well be a heart because you too wore it when you're with your favorites.

sharing my opinion here about serizawas design inconsistencies over time (spoilers for mp100 ending) i feel like in each new rendition of serizawa weve seen in official art ever since the start of S3 something feels off in a different way with every new merch release
lets start here ⬇ serizawa looks like,, himself. accurate to how hes drawn since his first anime appearance
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⬇⬇⬇ and then slowly,,, things start to look off. his jawline is slowly getting slimmer, his eyes look wider (same with mobs too)
Tumblr media
AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THESE. especially the one on the right my god. who is that
Tumblr media Tumblr media
every new promo art that comes out just feels very careless. I think you could say so for all the characters (mobs giant eyes, reigens waist getting skinnier/pointier features. the PROMO art of dimple that was literally FULLY TRACED OFF OF A TEMU PIRATE HALLOWEEN COSTUME. they all look bad here)
Tumblr media
it just feels a little depressing how little they seem to care anymore, like theyre just trying to pump out merch without bothering to use a character reference.
i notice the changes the most with serizawa. every promo art looks like theyre playing a game of telephone. each version of him is based on the last, instead of his initial design (shown below)
Tumblr media
at the end of S2, when reigen cuts serizawas hair, he still looks like himself. they did a great job of showing "how serizawa would look underneath his moustache and big hair". In S3 it feels like they've lost that mentality completely. like he's no longer based off of his original design, but an entirely new reference of his salary man look. some comparisons between S3 vs S2 and OVA down below
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I find that the line weight in S3 is much heavier and unfocused. but what bothers me most of all is that... Serizawa looks different in nearly every scene... as if they're undecided on what he should look like. the shape of his nose and jaw, his hair all change depending on the episode entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The art style change for S3 was meant to be "more accurate to the manga", but I find that it had the opposite effect. especially how serizawas and ritsus eye shapes changed. ritsus large pupils and serizawas more almond shaped eyes were more reflective of their manga designs there are plenty of inconsistences in S1 and 2, but they're clearly done with purpose to reflect on ONEs art style (my beloved). I feel like the thinner lines allow more room for detail and extreme facial expressions that truly hold a candle to ONEs insane talent for capturing emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these ^^^ compared to..
erm.. this.. ⬇
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just felt very underwhelming... and serizawa certainly does mellow out once he starts working at S&S, but that doesn't mean that there's less opportunity for detailed expressions !!
the yokai fight scene was beautifully made i have no qualms.. but the amount of serizawa lore and dialogue in the manga that got cut from the anime just made him look like a cardboard cut out standing behind everyone. lots of funny and interesting moments cut to make room for the moefication of serizawa katsuya..
I feel like there's a lot of important moments that were cut, (reigen "i hope i can become a partner like that" arataka, serizawa "ive had a similar experience myself" katsuya )
or sad, intense scenes that were made lighthearted (the body improvement club trying to help mob, mob and ??? dialogue being cut, reigen removing his shoes in the final arc made to be meant for better grip rather than... his passively suicidal tendencies )
i think the people at bones are very talented dont get me wrong, i just felt like S3 could have been adapted better. this keeps me up at night its like 1am :) anywhosies thank you for listening to my ted talk i love you

Homicipher Theory
Mr. Gap: The Homicidal Stalker
Disclaimer: This is all just my own interpretation and speculation. This is not negative or an attack on the character. I love Mr. Gap for being the worst of the worst. He’s sickening and awful and makes my skin crawl but in the best way that horror fiction can manage.
That said, Trigger Warnings: Mentions of stalking, sexual assault, serial killing, and cannibalism
Also
Homicipher spoilers/Mr Gap ending spoilers
-
If we go by my pre-established theory that the Ghost Apartments are a haunted grounds where an apartment building was built over the ruins of a hospital and collapsed subway, then we must assume that it’s haunted by ghosts from many different time periods. I believe that ghosts like Mr. Crawling and Mr. Hood are among the oldest, original haunts. Ghosts like Mr. Silvair and the nurse are from the hospital time period. Some ghosts are from the subway collapse. And some, like Mr. Gap and the Bride, are more recent, from when the apartment building still had occupants before its abandonment.
Mr. Gap is a rather unique entity among the ghosts. He’s the only one who can be anywhere at any time, can easily shift between the real world and the spirit realm, and clearly understands that he is a ghost.
But why? What makes him special?
I fear that the answer may be an unsavory one...
Mr. Gap
Tumblr media
Mr. Gap is the second entity we can meet once we wake up with control of ourselves in the Ghost Apartments. Moments before we meet him, Mr. Hood gives us a warning. He tells us to be careful, there are dangerous entities out there.
Ignoring his advice entirely, we interact with Mr. Gap. And since we don’t know the language yet, we’re very likely to smile at him, resulting in our first swift death of the game via getting our heart ripped out and eaten.
Tumblr media
The best thing we can do in early game is to ignore him. When he asks for a body part, step away. Later on, we can interact with him more directly, but initially, survival means not flashing him our pearly whites.
It becomes obvious early on why he’s called Mr. Gap. It’s because he…well, he only exists in gaps. He’s not a roaming ghost, he appears to be bound by the walls of this ever-changing building. But wherever there’s a hole in the wall, there’s Mr. Gap, peering out from between strands of greasy hair with one eye.
Tumblr media
Every time we interact with him, he requests a body part from us. Heart, arm, leg, head…and he means this literally. If we consent (or even just smile at him) he’ll devour whatever body part he asked for.
Tumblr media
But he can be helpful. While being chased by Mr. Hugeface, we can desperately ask him to get us out of there and force ourselves into a vent with him. He agrees to take us to safety, though not out of the kindness of his heart. He always wants something in return. Fortunately for us, he settles for just some of our hair this time.
Tumblr media
There is never a time when he’s not trying to weasel something out of us. Even in his own endings, he bargains and pleads for our heart.
Now, you can easily interpret this to simply mean that he’s some sort of mischievous spirit. Evil in the eyes of humans, but more of a representation of chaotic neutral yokai. Certainly, some of the entities in the Ghost Apartments bear loose similarities to yokai. And the tropes of bargaining and trickery go hand in hand with these sorts of myths.
Personally, I lean away from that reading because the game actually doesn’t seem to use very much in the way of Japanese yokai myths. I dug deep trying to drawn comparisons for each of the ghosts, but they were loose at best. There seems much more evidence that the ghosts are, as the name implies, actual ghosts of humans who died here, rather than spiritual entities.
And if that’s the case, it begs the question: Who was Mr. Gap? How did he die? Why does he haunt rather than move on into the afterlife?
I feel that the imagery of his character makes the answers obvious. The game takes place in an apartment building where Mr. Gap lives in the walls. I think that’s a direct reference to his life before death.
I theorize that when the apartment was inhabited, Mr. Gap was a man who crept through crawlspaces and inside of walls in order to spy on women. I believe it can be interpreted that he also lured, abused, and killed those women.
“Mighty hefty accusations, Wren. Where’s your proof?”
No proof, only evidence from my own interpretation to support the claims! I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to interpret his character, this is just mine!
Exhibit A - Living in the walls. Again, this seems the most obvious and on-the-nose point. He quite literally lives in the walls and is bound to spaces with gaps. But he also has an apparently innate ability to navigate the ghost apartments no matter how much it shift and changes. This could allude to how he had the internal structure of the apartment building perfectly mapped when he was alive.
More importantly, he only makes himself seen through holes in the walls and gaps like vents. And we know he’s watching us at all times from those very gaps. This is a direct reference to him being a peeping Tom. Even the other ghosts seem to recognize this, as we can get a humorous scene of Mr. Silvair taping up a hole in the wall so that Mr. Gap can’t look inside.
Tumblr media
Exhibit B - Self Awareness. This is the most fascinating aspect of Mr. Gap, in my opinion. Most of the ghosts we meet seem fragmented or confused. If they know what they are, or were, they don’t show it. They seem to understand that there’s an “other” place, but not really the distinction between life and death.
Mr. Gap, however, outright knows and brags about being a ghost. At one point, he shows us old newspaper clippings with a photo of three women with censored faces standing in front of the apartment building, with Mr. Gap in a window behind them.
Tumblr media
He can, and does, travel between realms. I assume this is possible because he’s bound to spaces within the apartment, but not specifically spaces in the spirit realm. The apartment is his cage, not the spirit realm itself. Because of this, he’s perfectly capable of peering out at modern day strangers walking by on the street and in the alleys. Also perfectly capable of haunting the old building and keeping its property value at a hearty zero.
But what does self awareness have to do with him being a criminal stalker and killer? Well, I think that he’s afforded these sort of rule-breaking abilities for one main reason, which brings me to…
Exhibit C - He’s a psychopath. No, I’m not using the term colloquially. I mean that truly, by definition, Mr. Gap is a psychopath. To be more accurate, by today’s definitions in the DSM-5, he would have Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), characterized by a lack of empathy, disregard for others, and deceitfulness (*ASPD is more complex than this, please do not take this as a statement on the disorder which is characterized by much more than these three things).
If this seems like a stretch, I invite you to look at the three endings you can get at a particular point in the game, all involving Mr. Gap.
In this unfortunate decision path, we manage to escape the Ghost Apartments. However, by this points we’re too far gone to be able to live among normal society. Not only has our memory been warped by the ghost realm, but our body is unrecognizable and grotesquely inhuman. We know this based on the reaction of the first person we ask for directions. He panics at the sight of us and flees. We are, for all intents and purposes, the rotting Michael Afton parading about as a normal human while looking like a decaying zombie.
Tumblr media
At this point there’s only one person left who can help us. Mr. Gap. Since he’s the only one who can cross between worlds. But even at our darkest and most vulnerable moment, is he going to help out of the kindness of his heart? No, of course not! In fact, he takes it as the perfect opportunity to ask for our heart again, the same way he did the very first time we spoke to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have three options. 1, give him our heart. As expected, the ending is the same as the beginning. He kills us and eats our heart. 2, refuse to give him our heart. He’s disappointed, but leaves us alone. We wander down the alley but don’t get far before we pass out. And then…Mr. Gap takes our unconscious body and, wouldn’t you know it, eats us anyway.
In the third option, we give him someone else’s heart. We kill a random person and deliver their heart to Mr. Gap instead. He’s not exactly pleased but he did make a deal to bring us back, so he reluctantly drags us back into the apartment.
Tumblr media
Sadly, while Mr. Gap is able to cross realms at will, he can’t bring us across. Instead, it seems he just brings us inside of the abandoned apartment. We don’t fully understand this though, which seems deceptive on his part. Sure, yes, he brought us back as promised. But not to where we wanted to be.
Now, it’s just us and Mr. Gap. Of course, he keeps begging for body parts. Except now, we have the chance to ask him why. The question…confuses him, even seems to irritate him. “Why?” What reason does there need to be besides that it’s fun?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, this interaction was bone-chilling to me. By no stretch of the imagination does Mr. Gap view us as anything more than a shiny toy (that was how I felt about it here at least).
I believe it’s this callousness that acts as his superpower. Unlike the other ghosts, he doesn’t have any emotional attachments preventing him from moving on to the afterlife. There’s no particularly strong thing keeping him here. He’s not repenting (Mr. Hood), he’s not in a cycle of suffering (Ms. Blue-Clad/Mr. Chopped), he’s not obsessively invested in his life’s purpose (Mr. Silvair). He’s just. Having fun.
I think this is a carry-over from when he was alive. He had no particular reason for stalking and killing beyond the fact that it was fun for him.
Because of this, he’s not trapped in the same way as the other ghosts. He’s actually quite content to cross between realms and peep at women who wander by. And if he’s real lucky, someone will get close enough to snatch.
Exhibit D - The Newspaper Clippings. What’s so special about them apart from the clear fact that he’s bragging about being a ghost? Well…I don’t think that’s all that he was bragging about. This old clipping includes a picture of three women with censored faces standing in front of the apartment. Victims, perhaps? It’s quite common for serial killers to keep trophies or memorabilia of their kills. Taking newspaper clippings reporting on the crime is actually a big one.
Tumblr media
Exhibit E - Cannibalism. Now this, I believe, could be either literal or metaphorical, or a combination of both. When he was prowling and murdering women, did he actually eat them as well? Maybe. Or maybe the afterlife cannibalism is metaphorical, depicting him as a predator, with us as prey. The symbolism of flesh eating is violating, as well, and his biggest interest is in eating our heart. This could line up with a common delusion among stalkers, in which they believe the object of their delusions is in love with them.
Tumblr media
Exhibit F - Sexual Assault. You may think this is a stretch and it’s bad enough that he could have been a serial killer and I’d agree with you. But I really think there’s enough here to at least suggest that he included sexual assault in his modus operandi. For one thing, he was a peeping tom, unquestionably. That’s the whole point of the holes and gaps that he peeks out of. This suggests sexual motivation for his actions. Then, there’s the possible symbolism of cannibalism meaning that he’s a predator. And, as also stated, when he brags about being spotted as a ghost, it’s on a newspaper clipping with only women, which lends credence to the idea that he stalked and spied on them specifically.
And lastly, the biggest evidence I have towards this point is in the Return Ending. At the very end, he makes his finally appearance under our sheets. This imagery feels intentional and deliberate. We lift the sheets and see him essentially between our legs. We dismiss him as being a prankster, and this ending concludes with him suddenly lunging from under the blankets with a wicked grin and hands outstretched to presumably harm us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s it. Fade to black.
To me, this reads obviously as a reference to assault. The stalker is in our bed, between our legs, and leaps to violently harm us.
We know that Mr. Gap doesn’t have a body, only arms and a face. So, this action appears to be simply a reflection of the actions he performed when he was alive. OR there’s also the possibility that he lied to us, and he does, in fact, have a body. I wouldn’t put it past him.
-
So, is it possible that Mr. Gap really is a reflection of some of the worst parts of humanity? Maybe. Or maybe he does love us, or he is just a mischievous yokai. I like the thought that he's a monster who gets away with it because everyone views him as an irritation rather than a real threat. Even if I'm way off base, he's still a totally fascinating character due to his uniqueness among the other present entities.
Honestly, serial killer or not, who would say no to a face like this?

So a common headcanon/theory I’ve seen floating around is that when Okarun shifts into his yokai form, the personality shift he undergoes is representative of a “truer” inner self. I can see the line of logic that led to this, but the more thought I’ve put into it, the less I’ve agreed with the premise. And I’ve put so much thought into it at this point that it’s had to become its own whole post separated from the analysis it was originally a part of, so strap in.
Disclaimer: if this is your personal headcanon, I’m not here to try to prove you wrong or make you change your mind, I’m more so discussing this from the theory side of things and what I think will happen as the manga continues. Also slight manga spoilers for up to chapter 172 !!
So as the theory goes, the personality that comes out when Okarun’s transformed is a more genuine version of himself, where his yokai form removes his anxieties and allows him to act more confidently and openly show the depression and pessimism that’s lived in him the whole time. On a surface level this tracks, as being in this form does make him more confident, blunt, and he completely drops the formal way he speaks to people, going so far as to adopt a cute nickname for Momo.
Tumblr media
I don’t think this fully makes sense for a number of reasons, though. Firstly is that throughout all 175 chapters that are currently out, I can’t recall any moments where Okarun ever acts in a way that would hint at his real inner workings reflecting the personality and behavior that come out when he is transformed. I could have missed something, of course, but when so much of Momo and Okarun’s relationship is built on them being their genuine selves around the other (more on that in this great video I saw), I’m inclined to believe that there isn’t going to be another shoe to drop nearly 200 chapters in.
To explain my other reasoning, I’m going to have to go into a little bit of a side tangent about Aira, and first I want to establish why I think comparing Okarun to her in this instance makes sense. So up until the cursed diorama arc, the only character that really has comparable yokai related powers to Okarun is Aira. They acquire these powers in different ways, and Seiko says Okarun has Turbo Granny’s “spiritual power”, whereas Acro-Silky says she gave Aira her “aura.” Given the contexts of the scenes these are said in I would assume they are meant to be two different concepts, however it’s not ever explicitly stated or shown how the difference there affects them or their yokai abilities, so I am treating them as functionally the same thing for this analysis. Regardless, the similarity between them seems to be that in one way or another, they have been left with the spiritual energy of their respective yokai, which allows them to transform in very similar ways. Their transformations affect them both physically in making them taller and stronger, as well as their personalities, with Okraun becoming less formal overall, and Aira becoming more formal in the way she addresses people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though they are affected by their transformations in very similar ways, I haven’t seen any kind of headcanon or theory that the way Aira behaves while transformed is how she truly is or feels, which makes perfect sense considering her first character arc. From when she’s introduced, she’s shown to have a dynamic with Momo, Okarun, and her other peers at school, where even before she’s able to use Acro-Silky’s abilities, she’s pretty two faced. In chapter 51, Momo even says, “There’s our Aira!” when she and Okarun pull Aira away from her class and she immediately shifts to her more snarky attitude towards Momo. The manga makes it quite clear that the way she acts at school, and on occasion towards Okarun, is an act, and that her genuine personality is a little nasty and rude (which she is loved for! By other characters and audience members of taste). And with that established, of course no one put that much emphasis on how her behavior changes when she’s using Acro-Silky’s powers. She’s still the same person, her mannerisms and the way she speaks are just altered slightly, which is also pretty much how I feel about Okarun’s yokai form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That being said, I don’t want to fully dismiss that the shifted personality could mean something, and in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if Okarun did still have some repressed feelings and pessimism from his time growing up without any friends, but at the current point in the story I’m not sure if I could see that being shown explicitly tied to his yokai form. As of chapter 165, Okarun gets his final ball back, and as per his end of the deal, he returned Turbo Granny’s spiritual power to her, and she left with them and hasn’t made an appearance since. Okarun no longer has access to his yokai form, but at this point he’s surrounded by friends, he’s confessed his feelings to Momo, and he’s even grown physically strong enough to hold his own in a fight without any powers. As far as what we’ve been shown, Okarun has developed and his life has changed so much that he doesn’t really have any of those reasons to be a pessimistic downer that he had before the events of the series. Not to say he has no reasons to be sad, of course, we still haven’t been given even a hint of what his family and home life is like, and I expect something will happen with that eventually. But with where the story has gone so far, I don’t see this theory being true or narratively compelling.
Tumblr media
TLDR: There’s not much evidence going for this theory, and several things against it, so I personally don’t see it going anywhere in the canon series. The way Okarun acts and the feelings he expresses in his yokai form could still potentially mean something, so I won't completely dismiss it, but with where the story is currently I don’t think this theory being true would add much or be a compelling element of the plot.

Note
ok, 1. i didn’t think you would take my question into account, thanks a lot 🥲
2. do you think they would have touched more on the yokai theme in the series? I feel like they had a world prepared that didn’t have enough time to be explored, like for example the prophecy that Draxum said, do you think it really would be shedder or maybe the prophecy was referring to the Krangs? Could it be that the yokai in ancient times created the prophecy to warn of the return of the krangs? Have they anticipated their release? Will they know other worlds beyond the krangs?
So many questions and no answers! It would have been great to see more of it in the TwT series (PS: I used a translator again, sorry if something is not understood)
○○○○
Aww, of course I would take your question seriously. 😌 Oh yes, they were primed and ready to go deeper into the lore of Yokai. They STARTED to do so with the mention of the prophecy and the reveal that Mayhem was an agent of the Council of Heads.
Tumblr media
But Ron Corcillo, a writer for ROTTMNT, tweeted to the fans some of the story beats that they were going to explore involving the Yokai.
*ROTTMNT SPOILERS BELOW: YOKAI LORE*
[Every screencap links back to its source on twitter]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I couldn't find any mention on Ron's twitter about the prophecy. BUT I hope what I did find was enough to shed some light on the backstory of the Yokai. 😁💜

Live A Live spoilers: All 9 Sins of Odio and his incarnations
I found a comment by shadejakva9367 on this video perfectly describing each sin of Odio and his many incarnations perfectly, and wanted to share records so that they're preserved online. Hope he doesn't mind me sharing all these.
youtube
shadejakva9367
I think all the incarnations embody them all in a way:
ODO: Gluttony: Ravenously consumes and demands regular food tributes lest it consume Zaki's tribe and possibly others.
Odi-Wan Lee: Vanity: Boasts of his strength and lives in great splendor and luxury in a grand palace, but relies on dirty tricks and his followers to give himself rather then his own power till cornered.
Ode Iou: Greed: He sought complete control over all of Japan, at the cost of others including his daughter and his own humanity through his pact with the yokai.
O. Dio: Wrath: Born from the rage of the angry spirts of the slaughtered 7th Cavalry, he'll lay waste to an entire town of innocents.
Odie O'Bright: Lust: He is a bloodthirsty, sadistic thug gets a massive kick out of having power over his opponents and making them suffer as much as possible before he kills them.
Odeo: Sloth: Remains dormant and has its followers do all the work for it till it is given power that is stolen from others to function as a threat.
OD-10: Pride: Sees itself as perfect and flawless in logic, to the point it deems itself being allowed to decide the fates of those in its care and has no tolerance for anyone who defies its approach.
Medieval Chapter Villain (Streibough/Odio-S): Envy: (like THIS needs any explanation!)
Odio (Oersted/Odio-O): Despair: What made him embrace his hatred he felt and turned him into what he is.

Worldbuilding: my fictional Universes
Hello, everyone! Recently I reached 4k followers on my Bluesky and I promised there to make a thread about my fictional universes and OCs to celebrate
Since it got a bit long, I made it about my fictional Universes first. I'll later make one about my OCs~
The universes where my stories take place are these:
Cedaria (a fictional medium-sized country located between the North & South Pacific Ocean)
Essentia (a fictional dark fantasy world divided into 6 regions)
Catanya (a cat universe! - Not to be confused with Catania, from Italy)
~ ~ ~
CEDARIA
Cedaria is BOTH in the northern and southern hemispheres of the world. It's divided into 5 regions:
◆ Satione: both a region & a prefecture ◆ Marmore: has 2 prefectures ◆ Anima: has 3 prefectures ◆ Littus: has 2 prefectures ◆ Pluvia: has 4 prefectures
Where Winter Crows Go takes places in the region of Satione—derived from the latin word "sation", meaning "to sow". It is both a region and a prefecture itself (much like Hokkaido in Japan).
Satione is a BIG forest area with a few mountains in certain parts. Famous for its nature, foraging & hunting.
There is a bit more info about Satione on my Where Winter Crows Go's Artbook. You can get it on itch or my Ko-Fi shop! It also contains a map of a portion of Satione, the part where WWCG takes place.
If you get it, be sure to read it AFTER playing the game since it has lots of spoilers!
Here's a sneak peek of the region map of Satione. It shows where Aspen's car was stranded and where Crowe's log cabin is located in Where Winter Crows Go:
Tumblr media
Marmore—from the latin word "marmor", meaning "marble"—is a region divided in 2 prefectures:
◆ Silvering (where Killer Trait and Petrichor take place) ◆ Goldenburgh (where Hummingbird's Crown and The Dream Drinker take place) Silvering has 12 districts while Goldenburgh has 7.
The other regions haven't been developed much yet, but here's what their names mean: ◆ Anima—derived from the latin word; it means "soul" or "spirit" ◆ Littus—derived from the latin word;; it means "seashore" or "coast" ◆ Pluvia—derived from the latin word; it means "rain" ~ ~ ~
ESSENTIA
Essentia is a massive world with 6 continents. It's a natural environment for different types of species, so not everyone is human here (in fact, the great majority isn't)
The 6 continents are: ◆ Nymphaea ◆ Asphodelus ◆ Chrysanthemia ◆ Dracaena ◆ Quercus ◆ Daffodilia
Here's a map of the world:
Tumblr media
⟢ Nymphaea is an aquatic area with a little coast. Mermaids, nymphs and other marine creatures tend to live here!
I'm thinking of making a story for a certain marine OC of mine here at some point~
⟢ Asphodelus is a region for undead creatures. For those who are born undead and for humans who die with a strong urge to live... and thus are reborn.
There are a couple of OCs I plan to make a story for here too. Especially my zombie girl 🧟‍♀️ and my Jack-o'-Lantern boy 🎃
⟢ Chrysanthemia is where the yokais live. Most of them are firm believers of tradition and respect.
This is kind of the "Japan" of my universe 😂 I love yokais, so I wanted to have an excuse for them to exist in my universe.
⟢ Dracaena is the territory of the dragons. They are very proud of their race and heritage. Also believers of tradition and how important it is for them to conserve the "pure blood" of their species.
Most of Azure Flame takes place here!
⟢ Quercus is a vast forest zone where spirits, elves and other creatures live. It's said that even deities and demons ramble around.
Quercus is divided into 5 different ares:
Fiorosia, the Spring Area (where Potion Pleasing takes place)
Erbaviren, the Summer Area
Rubeglia, the Autumn Area
Albanivis, the Winter Area
Umbra, the Dark Area (aka "The Dark Forest"; part of Panacea: Rebirth takes place here)
⟢ Daffodilia, a region with multiple villages, hills and towns. The biggest region of all and where humans live.
Between Quercus and Daffodilia there's also a crossing, a point where the 2 meet. It's where the entrance to Amber Stone Village lies.
A part of Panacea: Rebirth also takes place here.
~ ~ ~
CATANYA
And, finally, Catanya! This is the newest universe I've created. It's not very developed yet, so there isn't much I can say other than this being a fictional country where anthropomorphic cats live.
Hopefully, this 2025 you'll meet one of my OCs from this universe too~
(I'll probably edit this when I develop Catanya more)

Fic Rec: Gazing Into the Abyss by chaotic_quibit
Summary:
They should have known that there would be consequences to Okarun's use of Turbo-Granny's power. It was a terrifying power that his body was only just able to sustain. They do say if you gaze too long into the abyss... the abyss also gazes into you.
Comments:
Another amazing fic for manga readers!! It does have characters not introduced in the anime yet, so anime-only fans will need to be aware of character spoilers.
On that note - this fic makes me batshit insane. I've been keeping up with it for a long time its so good. It's written so well and the fucking ... The climax and story make me crazy. I cried reading it. From excitement, fear, idk but I definitely cried. OHHHHHHH my god its so good. Okarun my beloved <3 yokai lore <3 SPIRITS AND YOKAI INTERACTIONS <3<3<3<3
Definitely in my top picks for dandadan fanfics!! It's a longer read and has amazing depth + characterization. Words cannot describe how much I recommend this fic it's so good.

Genazo cheat sheet: Blink and you'll miss it edition
Another post where I try to list interesting details and tidbits about the movie, easter eggs, and such. I will try to follow the movie chronologically, but there might be some back-and-forth. Of course, this will include spoilers. If you're interested about Gegege no Nazo trivia and context, I wrote two more posts on the subject, here and here.
This movie is packed with little details that gives it insane rewatch value (I went to the theaters too many times...), either as references, easter eggs, or small touches that give not only historical accuracy, but also breathe more life into the characters and the world they inhabit. Let's go for another deep dive under the cut!
Tumblr media
- Opening scene, present time
Yamada
His name and appearance evokes Salaryman Yamada, a character part of Mizuki Shigeru's star system. I won't go through all of them, but multiple characters in Genazo are part of that star system, like the section chief and the president of the blood bank, some of Osada's henchmen, etc. (here a star system refers to the use of a rotating cast of characters put into different roles through different stories but retaining key characteristics, either in design, personality, etc. Tezuka Osamu is known for this practice as well.) But specifically, Yamada reminds me of Joho-ya, "The informant", or "Hunter" (in Inka-subs), from Akuma-kun!
Tumblr media
Ruins of Nagura village
As Kitaro's group and Yamada go through the village, you'll notice obvious items that played a part in the movie : the Sengoku-era armor, the hospital beds, Tokisada's ball form, etc. In the shot where Medama Oyaji says "The time has finally come, 70 years later...", Katsunori's car is in the foreground. Yamada stumbles upon the armor which I already mentioned, and is fairly obvious, but please notice the skull on the helmet: its left eye is worn-out! He then gets jump-scared by an Ichimatsu doll, which seems to have belonged to the little girl coughing in the train Mizuki and Gegero rode to Nagura village. Interestingly, though the patterns on the fabric are different, she shares the color of her kimono with Sayo, and both wear a bow in their hair. Finally, when Yamada points his flashlight at a window, a ghost appears for a frame or two, wearing a headdress making it looks like someone working for the Ryuga family. Which brings us to our next point... !
Hidden yokai and ghosts.
Mizuki Shigeru's daughter, Mizuki Etsuko, wrote the lyrics for Gegege no Kitaro 6th series' 3rd ending theme : "Mienkeredomo orundayo", "You can't see them, but they are here".
And indeed, if you look closely, or if you close one eye, you'll find that yokai have been present in the story way before Gegero made Mizuki notice them. Frankly, I don't know if I found them all, and what I can show you is mostly thanks to the joint effort of movie-goers who shared their findings online, but here are those I could spot and screenshot! (if you found more, Pleaaaaaase!!! Let me know!)
Tumblr media
First, the ghost lady in the opening scene.
Tumblr media
Mizuki casting two shadows in the blood bank office.
Tumblr media
The tengu-like face appearing on a tree trunk as Mizuki enters Nagura village.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kashabo, sitting on a tile as Mizuki enters Ryuga mansion grounds.
Tumblr media
Probably Ikkenya no Yoju's paw, whom will appear again later in the movie, when Nezumi comes to give the diary to Mizuki in the storehouse.
Tumblr media
The night after Tokimaro was appointed new family patriarch, Yuurei akago appear on the shelf in the back. (and these are actually pretty easy to spot, if you aren't so focused on Mizuki's cleavage. Yes. I know. Don't hide it.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A soldier's helmet appearing next to Mizuki and disappearing a few frames after.
I read about more findings on social media, but it's all I collected myself for now!
Showa 31, Tokyo.
Or 1956.
Trash in the water, a cramped, shabby strict in the foreground, the blood bank, and in the background, factories releasing smoke. Far from the Tokyo that Tokiya and Sayo imagined, right?
As I mentioned in another post, the people waiting in the stairs came to sell their blood, and most of them probably do this for a living.
The celestial eye goldfish, or Choutengan, heavily bred in Japan and popular in art, are only found in captivity. They lack a dorsal fin, have limited vision, and can only be kept in aquarium on their own.
Train to Nagura Village
"...Tokisada is the man behind that success story." A script note I should have included in the previous post but I forgot, oops. Mizuki calls Tokisada "立志伝中", risshidenchu, conveying the idea that he is someone who worked harder than everyone in order to achieve great success.
Mizuki smokes "Peace" brand cigarettes. Its name was chosen with hope for the future after the war.
Tumblr media
It seems Mizuki brought only one pack of cigarettes with him, as a pack of "Peace" contains 10 cigarettes, and he is seen smoking 10 times throughout the movie. The first time is in this scene, inside the train.
Tobacco's price in Japan has historically been exceptionally low, and at the time period Genazo takes place in a consequent percentage of people smoked - with a lack of awareness for safety, especially in closed spaces and around children, which was sadly not exclusive to Japan. Notice the girl holding the Ichimatsu doll and coughing : one of Osada's henchmen is sitting across from her, looking in her direction. Later in the movie, inside the underground factory, a smaller patient is on one of the hospital beds coughing, as a concerned patient turns to look at them. The doll is seen thrown in the trash, and of course, found again by Yamada in present time.
"Many people are following behind you." The silhouettes behind Mizuki are similar to the Japanese military uniform seen in his war flashbacks. So it's his war companions following him, and not the ghosts of enemies.
(a lot of points from the taxi drive to Mizuki's arrival in Naguramura I feel I already covered in other posts, so let's jump ahead a little bit.)
Reading Tokisada's will
Staff has cited The Inugami Family, movie adaptation of the novel The Inugami Curse as an inspiration for Gegege no Nazo. It's at the most explicit in this scene.
Tokimaro wears a sokutai outfit associated with noblemen of the Heian period. He also has teeth painted black, a practice called ohaguro, popular again between the Heian and Edo periods, mostly for cosmetic purpose ; and white makeup. Mizuki mentions how Tokimaro hasn't made public appearances in a long time due to poor health. Is the makeup for concealing his health...? In a previous post I mentioned how Toshiko, Hinoe and Otome share a motif reminiscent of the "inoshikachou" (boar, deer, butterfly) card combo in Hanafuda. Tokimaro's design is reminiscent of the Ono-no-Michikaze Hanafuda card.
Tokimaro mentions not being allowed to take a wife, surely not to dilute Tokisada's blood.
A maid places a zabuton cushion for Mizuki to sit on, just like everyone else in the room. However, during the entire scene, Mizuki keeps kneeling with his head low : Otome is already not pleased by his presence, but on top of that the maid placed the zabuton between two tatami. Tatami's edges are covered with cloth, and the fancier ones are embroidered with the family's emblem ; it would be considered rude to step and sit on it. He was also never invited to sit by any of the Ryuga, so he remains kneeling next to the zabuton.
Tumblr media
Tokimaro's death, Gegero's arrival
"I really hate conflict, you know. How about it? Why don't we all take a bath together and relax ?" Kitaro's father's love for baths is well known as Medama Oyaji. In the Birth of Kitaro manga, he also mentions how the Ghost Tribe are peaceful people.
It's a rainy morning, and when Osada's men attempt to behead Gegero, Mizuki rushes outside shouting to stop them. He's only wearing socks in that scene, which is why he goes barefoot in the next scene when he's in the room where Gegero is locked in.
"This person has brought calamity upon the village..." In the shot where Osada says this line, he's drawn wearing a ring. I'm not sure if it's intentional or an animation mistake, but I think it's the only scene he's seen wearing it.
Tumblr media
Night after the murder
Otome feels weak, and Osada doesn't just catch her as she falls, he tightens the embrace as if comforting her in a hug. In the following scene, it seems Hinoe got money from Otome, who is drinking red wine.
In the jail cell room, Mizuki is eating a classic meal of white rice, grilled fish, miso soup, and takuan (yellow pickled daikon radish). Gegero is eating a much lighter meal of brown rice and takuan sliced so thin it's see-through... In the previous scene where Osada, Otome and Hinoe are talking, Osada mentions that the room with the jail cell is in his quarters, which is why Tokiya was able to come in. Mizuki was also given a different yukata than when he was sleeping in the annex room of the Ryuga.
Gegero tells Mizuki that "Some people are not worth engaging in conversation." Indeed, he tried to warn Mizuki in the train that hell was awaiting him, but he didn't listen and came to Nagura Village anyways...
Asking Katsunori to let Gegero out
On the way, Mizuki passes by an old lady wearing a headdress and rubber gloves.
Tumblr media
She's probably coming from or going to the underground factory where M is produced, and is also likely the ghost Yamada caught in his flashlight at the very beginning of the movie.
Hinoe is seen drinking alcohol as she peeks at Sayo and Mizuki from the window. In the room is a man in a futon, and a suitcase full of jewellery. The day before, in the scene where Otome, Osada and Hinoe were together, Hinoe was counting money she probably got from Otome, promising she wouldn't waste any of it. It seems she spent it in jewellery from the man in the futon, who is probably an outsider.
Tumblr media
Hinoe is watching the scene from this balcony, and you can see two sets of tire tracks : the ones going straight is from Katsunori's car who just passed by. So the ones turning are probably from Hinoe's visitor, the jewellery seller, coming from outside the village. Had Mizuki paid a little bit more attention, he would have realized that Otome lied about the landslide at this point...!
In a previous post I talked about Tokimaro and Katsunori's placement in the succession scene, Katsunori sitting in front of a dragon, placed inside its maw.
Tumblr media
This time, behind him are displays of his vanity : a replica of the "King" (osho) shogi piece, and peacock feathers matching the color of his cravat. He's drinking Grand Old Parr Scotch whiskey, contrasting with Otome drinking red wine a few scenes earlier.
First time on the forbidden island
In front of the well, "呪" (kashiri) "Curse" is written on the torii gate.
(lots of important things happening that I already covered in older posts, so let's flash forward again)
Back at Osada's house jail cell
Gegero is eating zaru soba. They are cold buckwheat noodles that you dip in tsuyu sauce before slurping. It's a great dish to have during the hot Japanese summer! There are two ozen (low dining table/trays) in front of him, one with the soba, and the other with an empty spoon and bowl. It seems that this time, Mizuki shared his dinner with Gegero.
Discussing next plans
"And as long as [the Kyokotsu] doesn't have a vessel in the village." Here, Gegero specifically uses the word yorishiro which I chose to replace with "vessel", but yorishiro is a word specific to shintoism. It refers to an item or body that can attract and host a kami (deity). You may have seen before shimenawa ropes tied around rocks or trees - they signify that a kami resides inside, making those yorishiro. It's possible that at this point in the story, Gegero might have already figured out Sayo.
After finishing his popsicle, Mizuki flips the stick and looks at it, then seems a little bit disappointed. Some popsicles have written on their stick either hazure (lose) or atari (win), on the end which is visible only after finishing the popsicle - had Mizuki gotten a win, he could have had another popsicle for free! Aww...
Sayo and Mizuki on the balcony
Sayo wears a fashionable, western dress. She may have gotten it from outside the village, possibly from Katsunori. From this point, she starts calling Mizuki "Mizuki-san" instead of "Mizuki-sama", closing the gap between them.
Moonlit talk in the graveyard
Throughout the movie, you can see many electric poles, but in this night scene, no lights are on at night except from Tsurubebi :
Tumblr media
It's possible that most of the electricity is used in the underground factory.
"I saw it in the south..." When Mizuki mentions the south, he means Rabaul, New Guinea.
After lighting his cigarette with Tsurubebi, Mizuki notices he took his last one (the tenth) and crumple the empty cigarette pack in his pocket. It's why he shares it with Gegero instead of giving him a new one ; an interesting twist of fate right when Mizuki asks himself if he will have his own fateful encounter one day.
Gegero and his wife enjoyed "cream soda", which I left as is in the subs, but I realize that these are actually called soda floats in English, oops. Melon soda floats are heavily associated with the Showa era ; go to any vintage store, museum gift shop, etc and you'll find amongst retro goods something melon cream soda themed. (Pancakes and "pudding a la mode" are desserts with a similar iconic retro vibe) Cherries are also a known favourite of Medama Oyaji!
Tumblr media
Their date spot is in Asakusa, Tokyo. You can see Sumida river in the background, with what I wrongly assumed to be Ryogoku bridge at first, but is actually Kototoi bridge. Starting from there you can find the exact spot : The rooftop amusement park "Sportsland", opened in 1931 in the Matsuya mall building. The mall remains nowadays, but not the park, sadly.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
flash forward to...
After Gegero's capture
In front of the shrine, when Otome reveals the role of women within the Ryuga family, Osada's shoulders slump, pained by the thought.
Inside the underground factory, you can see the same headdress and rubber gloves wearing old lady, grinning while at work.
As I stated earlier, we meet the coughing little girl from the train again here.
Sayo asks Mizuki, "Are you going to help that person from the Ghost tribe?" even though she has never met Gegero on screen - Either she was spying on Mizuki and Gegero, or she figured it out after reading Tokimaro's diary. "If I run away now, this guy will laugh at me." Mizuki says. Indeed, Gegero accepted to work with Mizuki on one condition : "Whatever you see, do not run away."
Bloodbath
Sayo's Kyokotsu releases more smaller Kyokotsu from its rounded stomach, as if giving birth.
During the bloodbath, one of the Urakido is not killed by Kyokotsu, but by one of his fellow man who accidentally slashed his throat while swinging his sword.
When Otome calls Osada for help, he shouts the usual okusan, "Madam!", followed by her name, "Otome!" in despair.
The anger Sayo feels for Mizuki is different than the grudge she bears towards the Ryuga and the villagers ; she chooses to strangle him with her own hands rather than through Kyokotsu. When Gegero said that he felt pity for Mizuki, Mizuki similarly went for Gegero's throat.
The bottom of the well
"By now, [Tokiya] must be bullied in hell in my place." "今頃 余に代わって 地獄で 獄卒どもに いじめられとるだろう" ima goro yo ni kawatte, jigoku de gokusotsudomo ni ijimeraretoru daro Literally, "by now, he must be bullied by the Gokusotsu in hell in my place." Gokusotsu are the guardians of Hell - they are seen in Gegege no Kitaro anime, working for Enma Daio. It's wrong of me to have omitted them in the subs, but I didn't know how to phrase it with proper length and timing. I'm sorry.
Mizuki climbing the stairs dragging the axe behind him mirrors Gegero's arrival in Nagura Village - the sound of the axe hitting the ground replacing the karan koron of Gegero's geta sandals.
Gegero places the chanchanko for protection on Mizuki's shoulders, but later Mizuki put it on Gegero's wife instead - Mizuki didn't hear Gegero says his "my friend, the future in which you live is something I wanted to see with my own eyes" line after all. At this point, Mizuki has nothing left to lose or look for himself, as highlighted in the shot where Gegero and his wife reunite, and Mizuki is lying as if dead on the foreground while Tokisada speaks of the bright future of Japan. He is ready to pay the price for his actions, even if it costs him his life.
When Gegero removes the seal on the pile of skulls, it's lodged in a skull's left eye socket.
Present time
Yamada promises that whatever happened in this village, he will "definitely write it down and pass it on." His article was printed in the pamphlet sold at the time of the movie's theatrical run.
Ok... phew! I think that's enough for now. If you've read this far...congratulations!! Unfortunately I may still have things to say in the future, but that post is way too long already. Thank you for reading! I hope this helped you notice a few things. Enjoy the movie!

Unofficial Guide to Yuichi Usagi's Friends and Family
This is for the fanfic readers who want to read about Leoichi but aren't as familiar with Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles. Note that I'm not a diehard fan but I did watch the two seasons so here are my thoughts.
This post is also spoiler-y to the show and have referneces to the Usagi Yojimbo comics.
Gen
Tumblr media
Samurai Rabbit's Gen vs Usagi Yojimbo's Gen
Samurai Rabbit's Gen is based on Usagi Yojimbo's Gen. UY Gen is a self-proclaimed best friend of Miyamoto and constantly has him paying for the food and drinks every time they meet in their separate journeys.
UY Gen is a bounty hunter who knows how to wield a sword but refuses to follow the samurai code because of daddy issues (his dad chose to be faithful to the samurai code over providing a good life for his wife and kid).
More on Samurai Rabbit's Gen
SR Gen is also a bounty hunter but the similarity stops there. He was once from a rich family until his mother chose to heal a wanted convict. This made the people of Neo Edo mad at her which brought down her hospital.
Gen, upon growing up, had to make the hard decision to sell their mansion to the shogun and live his life as a bounty hunter.
Similar to rottmnt Raph, he's the oldest brother and carries that energy to his friends. He has a sister, Yoshiko, who looks like him. But they both insist they look nothing alike.
Tumblr media
Toshiko is more free-spirited than Gen, but in Gen's opinion, she's more reckless, which ends up with him cleaning up her mess.
They also have a family car called Ashibasha that is possessed by a yokai that enters into any neglected non-living object. They keep Ashibasha in slight disrepair since they got attached to the yokai possessing it.
Other Stuff I Can Remember about Samurai Rabbit's Gen
He fights with a pair of kaikishi weapon of studded metal clubs called kanabo. Its special abilities are not yet known.
He and his friends are all staying in his ancestral home that his sister bought back.
He's a hypochondriac who would overworry over a paper cut and is a frequent patient of the Neo Edo hospital (which used to belong to their mother) run by three Shiba Inus who like to stay silly despite the horrors.
He's also a germaphobe and one of his greatest challenges against the Machine is going through the sewer part of their ship.
Aside from being a bounty hunter, he's also a sign spinner.
He and his sister has a background on fixing mech.
He sometimes is the advisor to Usagi's naïveté. Like telling Usagi to read the situation first in their first meeting or when he told him that the birthday venue for Kitsune should be something she likes because Usagi kept showing fighting venues.
He knows how to be intimidating for his advantage but is actually a big softie like following Usagi's idea to be their Kaiksihi sensei even when it's going badly so as not to hurt his feelings.
Kitsune
Tumblr media
Samurai Rabbit's Kitsune vs Usagi Yojimbo's Kitsune
SR Kitsune is based on UY Kitsune. UY Kitsune is a street performer who robs her audience. A friendship was formed when Miyamoto stole back his wallet from her at the end of the chapter.
Despite being a righteous stick-in-the-mud, Miyamoto does have a sense of humor and doesn't seem to hold it against her when she robbed him of his money pouch that made him washed the dishes in a restaurant he ate in.
More on Samurai Rabbit's Kitsune
SR Kitsune is a street performer too. But instead of tricks with a fan and a toy top, she does puppeteering. She's also easygoing and has the tendency to make casual remarks about her life that ranges from zany to kind of concerning.
Like never having a birthday party in her life because she's an orphan, or that her childhood friend is a puff of gas that smells of fermented soybeans that she assumes is a ghost.
Similar to Mikey, she's just as playful and carries an energy of lightheartedness. She's the glue that holds Chizu with the others while Chizu is busy being the leader of the Neko ninja clan.
Other Stuff I Can Remember about Samurai Rabbit's Kitsune
She fights with kaikishi weapons which is a pair of bladed fans called Tessen. Its special abilities is not yet known aside from being able to return to her like a boomerang when thrown.
Has gay energy with Chizu.
She has a habit of stealing stuff but is trying to rein it in since she has her friends now.
Became sisters with a deadly alien ai that adapted its personality to her own. Her little sister is named Kiyoko. In the Usagi Yojimbo comics, Kitsune also has adopted a street orphan named Kiyoko whom she taught how to steal stuff.
Able to pilot a giant mech because of her puppeteering skills. Someone give that girl a gundam.
Chizu
Tumblr media
Samurai Rabbit's Chizu vs Usagi Yojimbo's Chizu
Yuichi's Chizu is based on another character in the Usagi Yojimbo comics. Miyamoto's Chizu is also a ninja. But Chizu's brother, Shingen, got to know and work together with Miyamoto first.
I'm not yet finished with the comics, but all I know is that Chizu's brother died but she has heard of the samurai that he has worked with.
She has trouble with the ninja clan accepting her as their leader, and at one point was told by another ninja leading the clan to marry him so that the ninjas would take her authority more seriously. She refused.
In the end, the other ninja died after he tried to kill her to overthrow her. She then forced a kiss on Miyamoto as thanks or something and then left. (Seriously, I can count three female characters that forced a kiss on Miyamoto.) Chizu is a possible love interest for Miyamoto in the series.
I haven't finished the comics. But after a quick scan in Wiki, I find out she also fails to lead her clan and became a fugitive.
More on Samurai Rabbit's Chizu
SR Chizu has something like a mother complex but a third secret thing with Neko ninja crew leader Lady Fuwa. She was kidnapped as a baby by Lady Fuwa and was trained to be a weapon alongside other cat orphans.
Tumblr media
So she kinda has a "You raised us but you kidnapped us. You destroyed our childhood for your gain but I wouldn't be here if not for you. You lie and cheat and backstab including me but I don't want to kill you" complicated thing with her.
Despite ninjas being famous for deception, she's the most strait-laced character in the group.
She tried to be loyal to Lady Fuwa. But Yuichi, Gen, and Kitsune reminded her of her childhood friend that Lady Fuwa took away so that Chizu wouldn't have any other bonds but her. It was Kitsune who was most hurt by her betrayal and Chizu made every effort to make it up to her.
Similar to rottmnt Donnie, she has a dry sense of humor. But again, that's where the similarity stops. If Donnie has evil-scientist-vibes, I think Chizu needs to be reminded to get loose sometimes. Well, at least Kitsune's there to remind her.
She really tried to lead the clan to no crimes but she has so much to learn first. Her clan, with the exception of one who was still loyal to her, turned on her in favor of Lady Fuwa.
Other Stuff I Can Remember about Samurai Rabbit's Chizu
Chizu fights with a kaiksihi weapon bow and arrow, along with her ninja gear of throwing stars and wrist-mounted crossbows. She's also familiar on how to use the naginata (it's like the Japanese version of a polearm).
Is ship-teased with Usagi but it's probably a callback on the Usagi Yojimbo comics.
Has gay energy with Kitsune.
Is looked up to by Hana and the other ninja kittens.
Tetsujin
Tumblr media
Based on a sunbear, Tetsujin is the last warrior and guardian of the mystical ki-stone aka Kaikishi warrior. He's the tech guy of the group and his form became that of a sci-fi ghost because of the ki-stone.
He and Lady Fuwa used to be together (which neither Usagi, Gen, Kitsune nor Chizu wants to hear about), but it turned out Lady Fuwa was just using him.
Yuichi Usagi's Aunt
Tumblr media
Usagi's Aunt's name is not yet known despite two seasons. She's not based on the Usagi Yojimbo comics. She taught Usagi everything he knows about sword fighting.
Although there was an implication of war a long time ago, judging by Usagi's aunt's leg and ear prosthetics, and that Usagi's parents are nowhere to be seen, there doesn't seem to be any samurais in Neo Edo.
Did She Ever Give Usagi Formal Training on How to be a Samurai? I don't know.
I'm not sure if she has formally taught him how to be a samurai, aside from sword fighting, such as the samurais' philosophies, virtues, and principles. But Usagi once quoted her words about protecting those who need to be protected. So it's possible.
But unlike Miyamoto Usagi, Yuichi Usagi didn't follow the traditional path of being a samurai:
Miyamoto received his sword, Willowbranch, when he was acknowledged by his lord and future master, Lord Mifune, upon proving himself in a tournament.
For Yuichi Usagi, he was given his Aunt's sword, Edgewing, when he wanted to go out to the city. In the Usagi Yojimbo comics, the sword of a samurai is his soul. But it doesn't seem to be the case for Edgewing.
So maybe it's more informal? Since Yuichi Usagi seems to be the only samurai around, the samurai tradition may have become obsolete by the time Yuichi Usagi became Miyamoto Usagi's thousand-year descendant. Similar to how the samurai class was abolished in the late 1860s. But that's just my assumptions.
Did They Pass Down Katsuichi's Unique Style of Swordfighitng? I don't know either.
It is Katsuichi, Miyamoto's sensei, whom Miyamoto learned the way of the sword that had made him a great samurai. But it is not yet confirmed if Usagi's aunt learned the same style.
How does the Yuichi Line Connect to Miyamoto Usago? I don't know that either.
While Miyamoto Usagi is acknowledged as their ancestor, it didn't say in the show if Usagi and his Aunt came from the line of Miyamoto's paternal cousin, Yamamoto Yukichi, or from a descendant of (surname unknown) Jotaro, Miyamoto's son that was raised by his childhood love, Mariko, and childhood rival, Kenichi.
Tumblr media
Hana and the other Ninja Orphan Kittens
Tumblr media
In the Samurai Rabbit series, Hana and the other orphan ninjas are basically child soldiers. Chizu and Usagi rescued them and the orphans now lived a peaceful life with Usagi's aunt.
They still have a long way to go as they're still trying to get used to civilian life without looting or destroying property (as they did when Usagi and Gen took them on an outing).
Karasu-Tengu
Tumblr media
Karasu-Tengu is the Master Yokai of all martial arts and also a nature yokai who doesn't like how Neo Edo had become because it destroyed a forest for it to become so big.
She was going to seclude herself into the deeper parts of the forests to protect and live in it. But Usagi figured out where to find her. She tried to shoo him away like how one would be whacking a slipper after a bug, Usagi fights her as he asks for her to be his sensei.
In the end, Usagi proved himself worthy, and they make a funny pair by how small and harmless Usagi looks like next to her -similar to Miaymoto and his sensei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Samurai Rabbit has a lot of references to the Usagi Yojimbo comics with more characters. But this post is long enough.

Reaction of the Dandadan characters to the stereotypical-looking alien:
[small stature, green skin, large head with black eyes, antennae from the head, harmless and very curious (like a small child)]
Dandadan, dandadan, dandadan~🎵
Spoilers!!!
Momo Ayase:
Momo, with her brash and street-smart attitude, would initially be skeptical and on guard, likely assuming the alien is up to no good despite its harmless demeanor.
She’d yell, “What’s with this creepy little guy?!” while keeping her distance, ready to use her psychic powers if needed. However, seeing the alien’s childlike curiosity—like if it starts poking at random objects or mimicking her movements—she’d soften up, finding it oddly cute. Momo might try to teach it human stuff, like how to eat ramen, but get frustrated when the alien keeps trying to “improve” the food with its weird tech, like turning chopsticks into a laser utensil. She’d end up laughing at the chaos.
“This guy’s a total weirdo, but he’s kinda fun!”
Ken Takakura (Okarun):
Okarun, the nerdy occult enthusiast, would be thrilled to encounter a classic alien straight out of sci-fi lore. His eyes would light up, and he’d probably ramble about how this matches descriptions from UFO conspiracy theories.
“This is a textbook Green alien! Incredible!”
He’d be cautious due to his usual anxious nature but too excited to stay away, eagerly asking the alien questions about its tech (which it might not understand how to explain). Okarun would be fascinated by the alien’s gadgets, like a device that accidentally warps space, but panic when it starts messing with human stuff—like trying to “upgrade” his phone into a telepathic communicator. He’d try to bond with the alien over shared curiosity, though he’d blush and fumble if Momo teases him about “geeking out.”
Seiko Ayase:
Seiko, Momo’s no-nonsense, would take one look at the alien and scoff, “Tch, another weird spirit causing trouble?”
She’d initially assume it’s a yokai or supernatural entity and threaten to exorcise it with her rituals, waving incense or talismans. The alien’s innocent curiosity, like trying to mimic her chants or playing with her crystal ball, would annoy her at first (“Don’t touch that, you little pest!”), but she’d grudgingly admit it’s harmless. Seiko might exploit the alien’s tech skills, asking it to fix her old TV or make a gadget to boost her fortune-telling business, only to grumble when the alien’s creations are too advanced for her to understand.
“Kids these days, even alien ones, got no respect for tradition.”
Aira Shiratori:
Aira, the vain and initially arrogant school idol, would first react with a mix of disdain and curiosity, likely commenting on the alien’s “weird look” with a scoff.
“Ugh, what’s with this tacky sci-fi reject?”
Her messiah complex might kick in, making her assume she’s destined to “deal with” this creature, especially if it starts following her around like a curious puppy. The alien’s childlike behavior, like touching her hair or mimicking her poses, would annoy her at first, but she’d secretly find it flattering. If the alien shows off its tech—say, creating a holographic mirror—Aira would be intrigued, using it to check her appearance while pretending she’s not impressed.
Her softer side would emerge if the alien seems genuinely innocent, leading her to reluctantly protect it, muttering, “Fine, I’ll make sure no one messes with you, but don’t ruin my vibe!” She’d probably bicker with Momo over who gets to “lead” the alien situation.
Jin “Jiji” Enjoji:
Jiji, Momo’s charismatic and slightly shallow childhood friend, would approach the alien with laid-back enthusiasm, treating it like a cool new buddy. He’d probably say, “Yo, little green dude, you’re straight outta a movie!” and try to high-five it, confused when the alien just stares.
His ability to see spirits would make him unfazed by the alien’s oddity, and he’d be hyped to check out its tech, like if it builds a gadget that levitates objects.
Jiji’s goofy charm would shine as he tries to teach the alien human habits, like how to fist-bump or eat snacks, only for the alien to comically misunderstand—like turning a soda can into a mini reactor. His protective streak, seen with Evil Eye, would show if the alien seems vulnerable, making him step up to keep it safe while cracking jokes to lighten the mood. He’d also tease Momo and Okarun about being “jealous” of his new alien pal, stirring up group banter.
Turbo Granny:
Turbo Granny, the foul-mouthed yokai now sealed in a maneki-neko doll, would be immediately suspicious and cranky.
“What’s this ugly little runt doing here? Smells like trouble!”
Her prideful nature would make her dismissive of the alien’s harmless curiosity, especially if it pokes at her doll form or tries to “upgrade” it with tech. She’d probably cackle if the alien’s gadgets backfire. Despite her gruff attitude, her softer side—shown when comforting spirits of murdered girls—might peek through if the alien’s childlike innocence reminds her of those spirits. She’d grudgingly offer advice, like:
“Kid, don’t mess with human junk unless you wanna blow somethin’ up.”
If the alien’s tech causes chaos, like making her doll float uncontrollably, she’d team up with Momo and Okarun to fix it, all while complaining loudly.
