I was stubbornly not wanting to cry at dandadan I was like "single mom doing sex work supporting her child backstory! obviously some guys are gonna come attack her and her kid will die or be taken I've seen this I refuse to cry for this basic ass woman suffers story wanting to tug my heartstrings I REFUSE"
but then it was so well directed and Momo's reaction and the hug and "to a kinder world" and I cried anyway. you win this one dandadan.
#goes to show even a boilerplate story you're kind of tired of can really shine is executed well#the ballet sequence...#dandadan#dandadan spoilers#i'm. hm. about dandadan having all the yokai backstories so far be about bad things happening to women because I don't think it really has#that much to say about it other than “violence against women is bad actually"#but I do like that Momo and now Aira have been the ones to put them to rest. While Okarun is just. it ain't about him. That part feels#deliberate at least#this one was more developed than the turbo granny OH BTW GIRLS GOT MURDERED IN THIS TUNNEL ITS SAD last minute footnote at least

been thinking about Beren and Lúthien ballet adaptation again...
#ft a proper finrod and celegorm design!#and daeron stalking#and mandos#giselle vibes for the halls of mandos sequence#in an actual ballet the story would have to be drastically simplified because you can't have overly complex dialogue#so i'm not sure if you would actually want to include finrod and celegorm+curufin in an actual adaptation since the bare bones of the story#still works without them. but it's more fun with them in it#also!#i have more sketches :) trying to work on some 'court scenes' which i imagine would be similar to sleeping beauty or romeo and juliet#for doriath and nargothrond#may post those too if i get the motivation to finish coloring them haha#clarisse doodles#tolkien#the silmarillion#beren and luthien#tolkien ballet#beren#luthien#finrod#celegorm#daeron

what a beautiful day to remember the iconic opening of dada masilo's swan lake
#in celebration of finally seeing a traditional balletic production of swan lake I dug up this video#halfway through the first swan sequence my brain was like “oh! the seaweed arms!” and I was like “where. where did THAT come from”#and then I remembered this#dada masilo#I had not realized that she passed away so recently. she really was a visionary choreographer and dancer

{ ooc. The idea of Serena's pokemon all joining in with her when she's doing her morning exercise routine or ballet stretches/exercises has me so 🥺
Like, even if some things they can't do physically (sorry aurorus and drifblim), it's just a good bonding activity. Or in the case of her Lucario, Delphox and probably Floges, it does have similar benefits that directly translate into battling or just their overall wellbeing }
#❀⊱⦃ ⏤ {ooc.} ⦄⊰❀#{yes if she was practicing the rose adagio four of them would step in for the big section right at the end}#{they want their girl to Flourish on stage for one of the most difficult sequences in ballet okay}

omgggggg are you kidding, i think you doing ballet is so interesting!! it’s one of the things i wish i could do 🥺 since you did it for 6 years, do you have any fun or cool moments to share? i’m so curious 🎤
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA RYU PLSSS blushing rn
honestly i dont think, at least my experience of it was rlly interesting ykno? idk kjdgdhkj it probably plays a factor in it that i was basically a kid back then
idk abt cool moments but i def had stupid (and funny in a way) moments lol. i think my fav coincidence is that the year i began- the recital of that year had my grade's theme being like,, cats? and cats have always been my absolute favorite so it was p fun... our tutus had tails attached to them and ear headbands.... i think i still keep those
i do vividly rcall that right after warm ups- bc we all would be tired and thirsty already, we all would try to rush to drink water (again, a bunch of kids in the same grade) so to scare us off they'd tell us drinking water and then returning back to doing ballter/dancing right after would make our stomachs explode. a reeeeaaaally flimsy reasoning when you think about it even as a kid but to this day thats what pops into my mind instead of the logical/health based reasonings lmao
also it was like an enlightening moment to wear your first ever pointe shoes- breaking them yourself (with assisted help) and all. like just holding them, staring at them for so long and being like "so thats how they do iiiit!!!!" (wooden tips lol) i wish i could still fit into my pair but my feet are now one (1) size too big for them........... devastating i think
#ill need to actually think of cool moments to share i promise !!!#its been so long since i thought abt ballet ngl...#omg but imagine like a modern au with kaveh as a ballet and alhaitham as the aspiring coreographer/retired ballet due to maybe personal or#health issues) and you as the newest rising star and ballerina of that studio.......................................#this is all jst an excuse to imagine a scenario where the other ballets cant get a specific scene right w you so alhaitham has to step in -#grab you by the waist and lift you up then idk perform the rest of the dancing sequence without the dramatics like a 'see? easy...'#ryu !!#answered

I'm by no means an Ilia hater. He's a fantastic athlete. I'm not big on his programs this year specifically (short is a bit boring and the free feels more like an exhibition), but I've enjoyed the ones he had the past two seasons before (Succession and Malagueña were particularly strong).
But, and I will not deny this at this point, damn does watching him make me miss Nathan so much.
#nathan's controlled skating#the precision in which he executed his choreo#and just the language of movement#he was never flailing#even in his 'fun' choreo sequences#it was always much more difficult than he made it look#the admiration he had for ice dancers and the insistence he had for training with them for weeks on end every year#his hands and his pointed toes#he had the jumps but he also had that#you see a step sequence like caravan and the skill it takes to be deliberately off kilter and off balance there#it's not something you really see acknowledged#it's no wonder king of step sequences kurt browning was so in love with his skating#that's a trained ballet dancer for you#such a gifted athlete and people reduced him to quads and ugly shirts (and ok yeah the shirts are pretty ugly but still)#rn i am clinging onto yuma because i truly believe he is the best skater in the world#(my preferred chaos child is of course kao 😂)

I have a horrible horrrible horrible essay to write BUT it’s my last one and when I am finished I am going to let this poor sad girl watch top gun maverick as many times as she likes
#about to be unhinged BUT#well firstly when I watch the red shoes I watch the ten minute ballet sequence in the middle of it about 10 times a week on YouTube until I#watch the red shoes again. and when I watch top gun maverick I watch the 10 minute test run sequence in the middle of it about ten times a#week on YouTube until I watch top gun maverick agains#so there is a link. to me.#BUT after watching a lot of Powell and Pressburger recently it has fascinated me how we really try and seperate art and propaganda by#assigning one as a lesser form yet it is unlikely we would HAVE film as art WITHOUT propaganda and particularly the interaction between war#departments and filmmakers in the Second World War. so the seperation gets muddied and tenuous.#and top gun maverick has been so routinely dismissed as propaganda OR loved in spite of it being propaganda which is to ignore an essential#component firstly of its existence and of its artistry. you can’t take the propaganda out of a matter of life and death and you can’t take#it out of top gun maverick and that’s okay and it is a part of their existence as art#art is never a pursuit outwith ideology and some art wears it more firmly on its chest than others#all Hollywood film is propagandist if you consider it an extension of American cultural dominance. it’s still art.#I don’t actually have to be shaking my head in disapproval#anyway I bought a book about Powell and Pressburger and propaganda and will report back ☝️

me, a stex fan:

#stex apparently?#context#in dance#we use nicknames for sections of longer numbers#I have no idea why that’s the section’s nickname#guess you could call it#the starlight sequence#haha#tbh it would make sense if the ballet were somehow related to or featured trains#but it’s fucking raymonda

LAST POLL OF ROUND 3
Judy Garland and Gene Kelly (The Pirate, Summer Stock)—Judy Garland and Gene Kelly!! Their chemistry was out of this world. Every time I see them onscreen together, they make me so happy...whether it's complicate showmance of For Me and My Gal, the out-of-this-world sexiness of The Pirate, or the slow-burn romance of Summer Stock, they will always be one of my favorite movie couples!
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce (The Sherlock Holmes films)—This is one where I'll have to bend the definition of a romantic couple but in the two movies I can think of, The Adventures of Sherlock Homes (1939) and The Woman in Green (1945) they have scenes together that would have absolutely been romantic had the two onscreen been hetero. Sherlock repeatedly tells Watson how much he means to him, even letting Moriarity escape once because he believed Watson was held hostage. If that's not love, I don't know what is.
This is round 3 of a mini tournament. Each poll lasts for three days. If you'd like to send additional propaganda supporting your favorite hot couple, you can reblog this post with your propaganda added, send it to my asks, or tag me in it. To vote in all the polls, click here. Happy holidays!
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Gene and Judy:

They were really good friends IRL, he made his film debut in For Me And My Gal and said she taught him all about movie acting, years later he did Summer Stock to support her during her struggles with MGM. We stan a mutually supportive pair. Honestly, name a hotter power couple than Classic Hollywood's greatest dancer and greatest singer, I'll wait.
