How to formally dress masculine
When I was younger the only formal event aside from prom was cotillion, so when I got a black tie invitation to a distant cousin's wedding, I was conflicted. I was recently out as trans, and while my cousin had said it was fine, I didn't know how to dress up in a masculine way. I hounded the internet for so long, trying to figure out what to wear. I struggled to buy stuff as well, since I'd never had to measure myself for a tux before, and all the ones at the closest mall looked cheap, and I wanted my first look to be one to remember.
Apparently, there's a lot that goes into deciding what to wear. The event changes the type of outfit, the venue changes the vibe of the fit, suits vs tuxedos, color scheme, color combos, pocket squares vs boutonnieres... let's just say it was more stressful than it had any right to be. So let's begin just at the type of event.
Event
White tie, black tie, black tie optional, semiformal, cocktail... and many more event types exist out there. I'll quickly sum each up. White tie masculine means you're dressed to the nines, but as if you were in the 1800s. Tailcoats, waistcoats, gloves, the works. Black tie masc means its an event the paparazzi will stake out so you gotta look Nice. Tuxedo, patent leather shoes, preferably bow tie with studs but long ties work. (Also, black tie doesn't mean your tie has gotta be black, just a dark color.) Black tie optional events are where you can wear a suit if you'd like, long ties are preferred, and as far as I can tell this is where belts start getting worn, and they gotta match the shoes. Semiformal is the same as business wear. Suits are preferred. Cocktail is like tuxedo casual, ties aren't required, sports coats can be worn, pocket squares preferred. If you're looking for a specific type of event, I'd check google.
Venue
Venues can surprisingly change your vibe pretty easily. Think about it, you won't wear the same thing to a museum wedding as a barn wedding. Same hat, essentially. Thankfully, it can be explained pretty easily: if it's inside, typically it's gonna be nicer than an outdoor event. There are outliers of course, I mean, have you ever seen the kentucky derby? But usually that is a pretty good indicator of outfit vibes.
Keep in mind you can always google "cocktail wedding masculine outfit inspo" and check if your fit, well, fits.
Color Scheme
Pay attention to the venue of course, but also look at your calling cards/invitations. What colors are prominent? If it's a wedding, does it specify colors for you? If not and you've never done this before (like me) an all black fit with a white shirt is pretty standard and fits a good amount of events. If the invitation has earthy colors, maybe look for a green tie and brown suit. If it's navy blue and gold, maybe a navy jacket with black pants and gold studs and cufflinks. You judge.
Color Combos
On that note, all colors look good but not all colors look good together, you know? I'll just go ahead and list common color combos here in a sec, but a good piece of advice is try and do the same color hue. Dark blue and dark grey, or tan and pale green or pink are good combos, but dark blue with hot pink? It would only work in a specific and unique circumstance, yeah? Just keep that in mind.
Good combos:
Blue, grey, and black are standard colors and look good with a lot. Steel blue and middle grey. Light grey and a sage green. Terracotta and tan. Of course, black and white.
What is what
Suits, tuxes, sports coats, and blazers are all different things, apparently. I guarantee not a ton of people know this anymore, but if you wanna get technical, there are a few telltales on which is which.
Suits have buttons that are plastic or wood, and you see the holes where they are stitched to the jacket. The lapel (the folded part of the front, where you see your shirt underneath) is the same as the rest of the jacket. The fit is more rectangular than triangle. Suit jackets match the fabric of the pants.
Tuxedos have buttons that are covered in cloth. The lapel is usually a satin in a similar color as the rest of it. Tuxedo pants have pleats and don't have belt loops to my knowledge.
Sports coats are patterned, and you don't have matching pants, but instead have pants that compliment the pattern.
Blazers are a solid color and have metal or wood buttons. You don't match the pants, but instead compliment the jacket.
Pocket Squares vs Boutonnieres
It used to be that pocket squares were worn at every event, folded nicely and tucked into the breast pocket. They have since fallen out of style, and replaced with boutonnieres (thank spell check for that btw). Boutonnieres should complement the rest of the outfit OR stand out from the rest of the outfit. An ivory ribbon with an ivory shirt, Never wear white with ivory unless that's the specific look you are going for (it looks dingy). Blue flowers with blue suit. Pocket squares tend to match the tie. They can be worn at the same time, but one must be understated to allow for both without looking "overweighted" in your pocket.
How to Measure for online orders
Tumblr media
This is a sizing guide I just mocked up that follows the majority of formal wear websites that I looked at (it's not perfect, I did it on my phone). Some sites may differ, so double check it, but I'll walk you through measuring.
The first measurement you should make is red, going around the base of the neck where it connects at the shoulders. Don't measure too tightly, but also don't measure too loose. You should comfortably be able to stick two fingers next to your neck without choking you out.
The second is in blue, beginning in the middle of the neck where the spine begins protruding (if you're wearing a t-shirt, look where the label sits and go just above it), extending to the left outer shoulder on the back, then to the part of the elbow that's boney, then to the meat of the thumb, stop it just before the first knuckle of the thumb
The third and fourth are both green. The third will stretch across the widest part of the chest over your arms. If you're trans, wear the binder you will be wearing when you dress up, or else it will be too big. If you're cis, the measurement will cross over where most folks have their nipples, but I gotta say prioritise the widest part of your chest over your nipples when measuring. The fourth will be almost the same measurement but under your arms, oftentimes in the armpit. Take a deep breath.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh are all a hot pink color. The fifth measures around your natural waist. This is your typical "dip" in your sides, and should cross over your belly button. The sixth will be where you tend to wear your waistline of your pants. The seventh will crosses over most folks' crotch area, and will go over your butt, across the widest part of your seat.
The eighth and ninth are a purple color and the only ones got top to bottom instead of left to right. The eighth begins at the same place the sixth line ends, at the right of the waistline of where you wear your pants, and will extend along the outer leg, and will end where the knob of your ankle is. The ninth begins where the crotch is, and extends down the right side of the inner leg, and ends where the knob of the ankle is of the same leg that you measured for eight.
The first and second measurement will be for your shirt, for example a 15 inch neck and a 34 inch arm seam will be 15x34. The third and fourth will be your chest measurements and will make sure you don't hulk out of your jacket. They tend to have an 8-10 inch difference, such as 48 overarm and 40 underarm. The fifth, sixth, and seventh will ensure when you drop it down low you don't split your pants wide open, and tend to be similar to the underarm measurement with a 5 inch difference. So a 40 chest will be a 40 hip/widest part, with a 35 waistline and say maybe a 37 natural waist. I noticed some companies prefer one over the other for the eighth and the ninth, so check for OUTseam vs INseam when looking at their site.
How to check if an outfit fits correctly
Well, first put it on. If you can't get it on, shockingly I don't think it fits (haha).
The top shirt button, even if it will be covered by a tie, needs to close and not choke you out. It may be uncomfortable if you aren't used to them, but there is a difference between uncomfortable and choking you out. The neck typically is the determinator of the rest of the shirt aside from the sleeves, and doesn't usually get smaller/bigger without getting a smaller/bigger size neck. Some companies do offer a fitted version of their shirts, so check when looking online if you think you need one. The sleeve of the shirt, once buttoned, should rest on the meat of your thumb and around your wrist.
The pants should feel comfortable, if not a little thick, and you should be able to sit without them riding up past your sock or threatening to split. While standing, you shouldn't see above your ankle knob and the pants should have a little crease while resting on top of your shoe, unless you're showing off your shoes.
While wearing the jacket, you shouldn't be able to pinch more than an inch of fabric at the shoulder seam. The sleeves should let a little shirt peak out but still rest on the wrist while your arms are at your sides. The lapel shouldn't bulge or stretch once buttoned. The bottom of the jacket should rest at about your palms when you stand tall and relaxed.
Wow. That was a lot more information than I thought I knew. Maybe I should look into being someone's tailor /j. Anyway, I ended up renting from https://generationtux.com/ since they are totally online, and really like how I looked, but maybe check for in person rentals, since if something had gone wrong I wouldn't have been able to fix it.
If you're trans and wearing a formal look for the first time, wear the stuff you'll be wearing under your suit while measuring, and you should look fairly masculine, especially since suits don't tend to have a feminine cut.
Anyway, happy formalwear hunting. :)

Smart Casual For Men 2022- Ultimate Style Guide - Across The Pond
A Complete Guide To Smart Casual For Men
You are dressed in a top hat and tails on your wedding day on one end of the axis. On the other end, you stagger down the hotel stairs in your best jumper and jeans for the morning after breakfast.
Now is the time to put away the pajamas and master the tricky smart-casual dress codes that will be stamped above most events on the calendar.
What Is Smart Casual?
Smart casual is a vaguely defined Western dress code that is generally considered casual wear but with the intelligent components of a proper lounge suit from traditional informal wear. This interpretation typically includes a dress shirt, necktie, trousers, and dress shoes, possibly paired with an unusually colored blazer or sports coat.
Smart casual emerged as a dress code in the twentieth century, initially referring to a lounge suit of an unusual color and a lighter, more casual fabric, possibly with a more relaxed cut and details. As the one-color lounge suit became synonymous with casual wear, uneven colors became associated with smart casual.
This intelligent casual business is tricky because it is difficult to mix the looks. It must contain elements of both in perfect balance so that instead of competing, they work together to create an outfit that is greater than the sum of its parts.
As brilliant as it can be when done correctly, smart casual is still one of the most misunderstood terms in the menswear lexicon. Removing your tie does not create a bright casual look. Neither does wearing a suit jacket with jeans. Intelligent casual outfits are all about balance, but the distance between each pole is crucial, like a seesaw.
Smart Casual vs. Business Casual
In today’s fashion, clothing styles frequently mix. While most people understand the differences between business and casual wear, they often confuse hybrids like business simple vs. intelligent calm.
Business casual is an unclear Western dress code for white-collar workplaces that are generally considered casual wear but with intelligent components of a proper lounge suit from traditional casual wear. Business casual is a less formal version of business standard, while smart casual is a less formal extension of business casual.
Wearing a tie with business casual is not appropriate – the goal of this style is to appear more casual, and a link should be reserved for a business suit. You can wear a belt; choose one that matches the color of your pants. Wear only leather shoes.
Last but not least, don’t over-accessorize. Wristbands, sunglasses, and pocket squares should be used sparingly and not all at once.
Business casual is a less formal extension of smart casual. While business casual is appropriate for the workplace, smart casual is suitable for all other occasions. Wear a plain, toned-down t-shirt for smart casual; any shirt with a print is more casual, not intelligent casual.
Wear business casual to the office on casual Fridays or to a semi-formal meeting outside of the office. For a date, ladies prefer a business casual look! While an intelligent casual outfit can be worn to any event unrelated to the office but still requires class and elegance. Weddings, cocktail parties, and so on, but also date nights, call for a bright blazer.
Smart Casual Attire for Men
Casual Shirts:
Casual shirts are a type of Western dress code that is relaxed, on occasion, spontaneous, and appropriate for everyday use. Following the counterculture of the 1960s, casual shirts became popular in the Western world. When the comfort of casual wear is highlighted, it may be referred to as leisurewear or loungewear. It can pull off both a formal and straightforward look if appropriately dressed.
Floral Printed Shirts:
Floral shirts are cotton shirts with various types of floral prints that give them the casual look that it deserves. Floral shirts, which are typically associated with summer collections or beachwear, have made their way to party wear as an excellent piece of clothing.
Chino Pants:
Chino pants are made of a high-quality twill fabric initially made of 100 percent cotton. The most common item made from it, trousers, is commonly referred to as chinos. Chinos pants are widely accepted as smart casual worn for formal and informal occasions.
Cargo Shorts:
The shorts and pants Cargo is a significant street fashion popular style inspired by the pants worn by British armies. Cargo shorts are gaining popularity among everyday males due to their style and convenience. Men’s shorts are by far the most enjoyable summer garment. Modern men’s shorts styles 2022 are essential summer clothing options that provide maximum comfort.
Joggers:
Jogger pants have firmly established themselves in the modern man’s wardrobe. Nothing beats a pair of men’s trousers for keeping your look relaxed and stylish. Jogging jeans styling requires a certain amount of finesse, as it will finally showoff your astute fashion sense and set you apart from the crowd.
Where to wear Smart Casual Wear for Men?
Parties and Non Formal events:
If your wedding invitation specifies smart casual attire, skip the jeans and opt for nice chinos instead. Although a tie is not required, you should bring one just in case, and dress up your blazer or jacket with a pocket square. If you’re going to a smart casual beach party, however, a dressy pair of shorts with a tucked-in shirt is perfectly acceptable.
Dressing smart casual for Job Interviews:
Smart casual is less formal than traditional business casual and more comfortable and functional. If you have an interview with a casual dress code at a company, skip the business attire. Although some companies’ dress codes are more relaxed than others, it is essential to look professional and polished during an interview. If You want to make a great first impression, dress appropriately, even if you work in a casual environment.
Wise casual good for office:
Smart casual conveys semi-formal vibes. Simple shirts and chinos are appropriate for the workplace and do not violate office etiquette. In general, intelligent casual consists of neat chinos or dark-colored jeans, a sweater, a blazer, and a pair of leather shoes. Your attire should be well-fitting but not as formal as a business casual or professional business look.
Dress Up or Dress Down:
Dressing up implies making every effort to look your best. Dress up is always in connection with your activities and representation. You get ‘dressed up’ if you want to appear decent and respectful. Dressing down implies performing below what social norms expect of you. For example, you might go to work in jeans and leggings. Or you show up to a memorial wearing too much naked or vulgar neon clothing. You may do it out of rebellion, to appear casual, or simply because you don’t care.
Do’s and Don’ts of Smart Casual
While the specifics of men’s smart casual wear vary by location and culture, a few things remain constant. Here are some general “do’s” and “don’t” for intelligent casual wear:
Wear a tailored blazer made of lightweight materials (cotton, linen) during warmer seasons and heavier materials (wool) during colder seasons.
Don’t wear a windbreaker or any other athletic coat or jacket.
Do wear a dress shirt or tight-fitting sweater.
Don’t wear a sweatshirt or hoodie.
Feel free to wear a clean, neutral, tight-fitting, premium t-shirt.
Don’t wear a visibly casual t-shirt of inferior quality or loud color.
Wear khakis, chinos, or a nice pair of denim.
Don’t wear sweatpants or running pants.
Wear tailored shorts that retain a clean, slim profile and land above the knee.
Don’t wear cargo shorts, board shorts, swim trunks, loose-fitting shorts, or outwardly athletic shorts.
Remember that personal style is self-expression, and there’s no wrong way to go about it. It’s all about wearing smart casual, what you love and what makes you feel good.
Style is a journey, so be sure to have some fun with it!

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BLAZER, SPORT COAT, AND SUIT JACKET
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BLAZER, SPORT COAT, AND SUIT JACKET
Today, the term “blazer” and “sport coat” are often used interchangeably, but historically there’s a difference. Let’s first discuss what separates a blazer from a sport coat. Blazer vs Sport Coat A sport coat is inherently more casual than a blazer, making it the least formal of the 3 jacket types. They are typically made of visibly textured fabrics like tweed or corduroy, while a blazer can…

dev tea room’s word sprint challenge: What’s in your muse's closet?  word count: 555 (353 completed in-sprint)
Kaz’s clothes range from business casual to semi-formal, & each individual piece is starkly tailored - not just to his body, but to hide the tools of his trade such as various knives, & lock picks, or to accommodate specific tastes - such as embroidery or the desire for custom cufflinks in lieu of traditional buttons. the bulk of his clothes fall into the categories of various types of button down shirts, waistcoats, trousers, & jackets.
His gloves are stored in a closet by loose definition of they’re shoved neatly in a box their own special case next to the case he keeps his pocket watch (& more traditional watches in modern verses), & above the other case he has for his cuff links. prior to being stored more neatly in his closet, these cases were stacked under his bed & used to conceal rolls of stolen artwork.
The varied button down shirts range from dark to neutral tones, with the lighter to neutral ones being reserved strictly for daylight business. darker tones mask the ever-present aftermath of violence, & therefore make up the majority of that section of the closet. they’re hung, not folded, & many of them follow the oxford shirt style. he also has several dress shirts that he wears casually just because it suits him. he has several overshirts for when a waistcoat might draw too much attention to himself. he also owns several linen shirts, but wears them infrequently.
in his modern verses where he spent time on the Fahey farm prior to graduation, he has an assortment of t-shirts (typically band of video game inspired), hoodies, flannels, & chambray shirts, but this collection in his closet -- much like some of the sweatpants & drawstring trousers in later notes - is exclusive to these verse variants.
when he’s not wearing collared shirts with buttons, his default is turtleneck style, or something paired with scarves & jackets. outside of his waistcoats, everything absolutely has to cover his arms as far down as the hem of his gloves.
coats & jackets are divided between seasons, then further loosely organized by casual vs formal - in canon verses, he prefers wool coats or a peacoat to stave off the worst of Ketterdam’s dank cold, but modern verses he adds a smattering of lighter jackets, to include at least one leather jacket, & a bomber jacket for the shoulder seasons. in any verse, he has several blazers. in his modern verse, his jackets are additionally tailored with inner pockets for a primary cell phone, & a back up unit that’s more along the lines of a cellular brick that he uses for emergencies.
notably missing from his wardrobe is anything remotely resembling barrel flash. he stays away from sport coats, cardigans, & brightly colored fabrics unless using them strictly for a con, & while he does own a tux & other formalwear, it’s stored to the absolute back of a closet & only used is strictly required.
moving to trousers, Kaz has an assortment of chinos & cords, as well as heavier wool & pleated trousers. he doesn’t have anything resembling drawstring pants, & in his game developer verse only, he has sweatpants but you’ll likely never see them. any jeans he does have are dark wash at a minimum, but preferably black.

Yami Gautam In Solid Colour Vs Striped Pantsuit? Which Look Is Your Fav?
Tumblr media
Yami Gautam is a Bollywood actress who has impressed us with her movies. The actress has appeared in movies like ‘Kaabil’, ‘Sanam Re, ‘Ginny Weds Sunny’, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and a few more. The actress has also been a part of several Telugu, Kannada as well as Malayalam films. Today we look at the pantsuit looks of the actress. Yami Gautam has been sported wearing several styles and patterns of pantsuit giving us the major power vibes. For instance, the actress donned a red and white striped pantsuit that consisted of a blazer coat and matching flared pants teamed up with white heels to accentuate her power looks. The actress seems to be in love with pantsuits as she was yet again seen in another stunning white and black striped suit. The actress’s black and white suit looks consisted of a sleeveless blazer coat that was belted with the belt of the same fabric paired along with matching wide-legged black and white striped pants. Not just in different colored stripes, but Yami has also aced the poweR look in plain solid colors as well.
Yami Gautam made a powerful statement rocking the solid ice blue pantsuit that featured an off-shouldered formal jacket teamed up with matching ice blue flared formal pants. Yami looked fierce and elegant in this outfit as she proved her strong pantsuit game to be on fleek. Yami ditched the mainstream gown looks of the Award function, and instead opted for a fiery red pantsuit along with a red mesh top for her appearance at the Vogue Beauty Awards.
On the professional front, Yami will be next seen in the movie ‘Bhoot Police’ which will also star actors like Saif Ali Khan, Jackqueline Fernandez, Arjun Kapoor, and a few other prominent actors as well. Take a look at Yami Gautam’s pantsuit looks which are always on point!

Note
dirnelli, how do you make a distinction between an orphaned suit jacket vs. sports coat/blazer (without patch pockets)? and how do you know whether you can wear an orphaned suit jacket as a sports coat/blazer? i'm thinking of something with a medium gray herringbone weave.
It’s a question of fabric. Some fabrics scream suit, e.g. solid grays usually suggest a suit.

90s fashion is so in right now – so here are the top five mens 90s fashion styles you should know. They are easy to wear and easy to put together, for a no fuss look.
Five mens 90s fashion styles
90s fashion for men was quirky and a little bit unconventional. Many people had very little money and so happily raided vintage stores to get a mis-matched, but charming style. They favourite plaid shirts, chunky sweaters, old band t-shirts, roomy jeans and maybe a little bit of makeup.
Unlike 80s styles, messy layering was in and though the usual style was a shirt open over a t shirt with maybe a cardigan over that, the more daring might wear a pretty dress over their jeans instead. Actually, that went for girls too. However, this was more for rock stars and isn’t a part of the 90s revival I’ve seen on the catwalk lately.
  90s hair and makeup
90s hair could be coloured or bleached but it should look like you did it at home, and if you want to wear makeup it should look like you’re not very good at it. No point following today’s excellent make up boy’s you tube channels, they’re just too polished. For style inspiration, try looking towards Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Brian Molko or Jarvis Cocker. Top 90s female style stars were Liv Tyler, Drew Barrymore, Rachel Green, and Jennifer Aniston.
Indie movies like Slackers and the Big Lebowski are great to watch to get inspiration, and just great to watch anyway. The Matrix was also huge in the 90s for its awe inspiring special effects, but seriously, don’t watch that for fashion advice. Neither the bits where they wear leather trench coats nor the bits with holey jumpers and sad expressions are a great fashion statement.
Five Mens 90s Fashion Styles – Separates
Since the 90s have come back at the men’s fashion weeks, it’s a vintage fashion look you might want to try. Don’t worry, it’s very easy to wear and flattering. There’s no tight trousers that only suit the skinniest of figures, or bright colours that draw attention. Instead it’s a little bit of luxury in the shape of a velvet blazer, and a lot of practicality in the shape of sweaters and parkers.
Here’s my top five mens 90s fashion styles and how to wear them. The trick is not to go for a full look or you’ll seem like you’ve wandered off a film set. Just pick and choose elements you like and wear them as a twist. Our model, Josh, illustrates this perfectly as he sports a very fashionable beard, and is very well groomed, which isn’t something most 90s men could boast of.
  The Blue Levi 501 Jeans
josh -Blue Levi 501 Jeans
The classic that has rarely been out of fashion for urban men. The cut is high waisted, and relaxed through the leg. The classic 90s wash is a mid-blue, but really however they come. The idea is that these jeans have been loved, worn and washed many times.
In the 90s these jeans were a kind of anti-fashion – they represented no particular style statement. They weren’t wide leg, like in the 70s, they weren’t bleached and patterned like fashion 80s fashion. They were just your average joe, comfortable jeans to pull on and go.
Now though, amid more contemporary skinny jeans and dark washes, these jeans stand out. Just a bit, and just enough to look stylish. They are still as comfortable as ever. Roll up the hems for a modern touch like Josh does.
  The White Wool Sweater
Close up white wool sweater
A classic 90s outfit was often bought at a vintage store. That’s where, if you’re smart, you’ll shop for a cosy white sweater. Josh models a simple chunky white rib one here. You might have noticed the trend for Norwegian or Fisherman style sweaters, and this is an excellent example.
Bought new, these tops can be very pricy but in a vintage store they are inexpensive. For 90s style, pair it like Josh with your 501s, and just a t-shirt or nothing underneath.
  The Olive Green Parker
Who can forget the Blur vs Oasis battle of the 90s? Both of these bands claimed to be alternative. But both had thousands of fans and ranked highly in the pop charts. And both bands had a favourite jacket – the parker. Olive green for preference, it was part of their lad’s uniform. Last time I saw lead singer Noel Gallagher on stage he was still wearing his.
The parker also has a longer urban fashion pedigree than just the 90s. The highly stylish Mods of the 1960s, a style and culture tribe who famously fought with their rivals, the Rockers, also wore green parkers. In fact, Noel Gallagher really liked Mod styles, sporting a bowl haircut and sideburns in the 90s as a revival. So that’s where the 90s popularity came from.
Whatever their genesis, parkers are a fashion outfit that is lightweight, will keep the rain off and look good.
The Diamond Print Sweater
josh-Diamond Print Sweater
This is definitely a look you want to go to the vintage shop for. This brown and yellow roll neck with its distinctive pattern is something for your 90s party, but also every day. It is really playing into the trend for oversized woolly jumpers.
Men fashion is often about practical, wearable items with a twist like an unusual print, pattern or colour way that sets the clothing apart from the crowd and this really fits the bill.
  The Velvet Blazer
josh- Velvet Blazer
The velvet blazer is one of my very favourite men’s party outfits. It can be styled very simply, with a black roll neck and black dress trousers. Wear dress loafers, as Josh does here, (no socks though!) or if you really want to make forproper Mens 90s fashion styles, try black Dr Martens.
The usual colours for the velvet blazer in the 90s was an un-patterned, block colour in olive green, navy blue, burgundy, brown or black. This isn’t a peacock style, just a touch of the luxurious. Don’t be tempted to wear it with a cream silk cravat or tiny moustache like a dashing 40s film star, unless, of course, you want to look like a dashing 40s film star.
Finally, 90s style is about relaxing, mix and matching, and having fun. So go have fun!
The Top Five Mens 90s Fashion Styles You Should Know Of 90s fashion is so in right now – so here are the top five mens 90s fashion styles…

The FashionBeans Menswear Awards 2017
http://fashion-trendin.com/the-fashionbeans-menswear-awards-2017/
The FashionBeans Menswear Awards 2017
Amidst the political upheaval and doomsday-mongering that we heard from all corners this year, one area that really benefitted from chaos in 2017 was men’s fashion. This was the year when designers rediscovered their courage, when long-lost trends were brought back from the dead and your wardrobe got more choice than it’s had in years. So, before we turn the calendar to 2018 and start making plans for the new year, let’s take a moment to look back on the good, the bad and the very, very ugly of 2017.
From the best and the worst of our wardrobes to the men we should all hope to be a bit more like over the next twelve months, these are the official FashionBeans Menswear Awards.
Breakthrough Brand Of The Year
Arket
For those not yet acquainted with the latest name in H&M’s burgeoning roster of brands, here’s a primer. Dubbed Arket, the ‘M’-less market-inspired retailer offers a curated edit of wardrobe staples that place an emphasis on quality over catering to trends.
The first men’s collection, which debuted in spring, is packed with the kind of handsome pieces the Swedish powerhouse is known to produce at mid-level price points – like sleek wool-blend sweatshirts and timeless trench coats – all housed within Instagram-baiting interiors with OCD-neat rails arranged by colour.
With a successful flagship up and running on London’s Regent Street, with more set to follow, and a digital presence in over 18 countries, Arket is one to watch (and wear) in 2018.
Most Influential Designer
Raf Simons, Calvin Klein
When Raf Simons debuted his first collection for Calvin Klein back in February, it marked the creative reboot of an $8 billion fashion empire seven months in the making. Charged with reviving the lethargic label, the visionary Belgian designer wasted no time fusing his modern-minimalist approach with American youth culture.
The result was a buzz about the brand not seen since the days of Mr Klein himself, wearable shapes and styles but with interesting pops of colour and material choices. In the months that followed, Simons asserted his vision for the brand, tapped Mahershala Ali and the Cast of Moonlight as underwear models, oversaw a logo redesign and re-launched one of the company’s most iconic fragrances. It’s safe to say, we’re Obsessed, too.
Unlikeliest Menswear Icon
Jeremy Corbyn
Who’d have thought it: 2017, the year Corbyn got cool. Did being thrust into the fishbowl of British politics during the general election prompt the 67-year-old to employ a stylist? Could it be that he started reading FashionBeans on the morning commute to parliament? Whatever is responsible for Jezza’s transformation from rank outsider to genuine contender, it worked.
His suits are better fitting, his Ralph Lauren Harrington jacket is a classic and that grey shell suit is straight-up athleisure at its finest. As one Twitter user commented after watching him on Question Time in June, the whole Corbyn aesthetic has gone from “freight train-jumping hobo” to “vaguely credible-looking adult”. But there’s also been a swing in perception. Corbyn’s normcore grandpa styling resonates surprisingly well in a world where unfussy workwear and seventies menswear are trending.
The rise of the famously tie-less “scruffy member for Islington North”, as he was once known, is now King Corbz in the style ranks, earning him the title of this year’s most unlikely menswear icon.
Worst Trend
The Muscle-Fit Clone
It’s no secret that silhouettes in menswear have been relaxing for some time now. The skinny cuts that men poured themselves into for the best part of a decade are no longer the only option when it comes to getting dressed. But it seems not everyone got the memo.
One contingent of distressingly preened and pumped guys has taken bollock-crushing legwear to a new level. Meet: the Muscle-Fit Clones. The overstuffed sausage aesthetic has permeated every conceivable corner of the high street, from tailoring to T-shirts and everything in between.
And if this trend wasn’t bad enough, it seems such pieces come only in a limited colour palette: white and black for jeans, olive for T-shirts and pastel-coloured going-out shirts. Wear them until you die or your balls fall off. Whichever happens first.
Most Wearable Trend
1970s
Ah, the seventies. A decade where disco hair and platform shoes reigned supreme. And in celebration of the era that spawned the Sex Pistols, Saturday Night Fever and Space Hoppers, designers this year chose to revive some of those golden years’ most iconic (and thankfully, wearable) wardrobe pieces – i.e., not disco hair and platform shoes.
From brown everything to checked blazers, wide-cut trousers to – despite initial reservations – corduroy, men have been readily adopting once-maligned trends and looking all the better for it, too. Freak out.
The Bastard Who Looked Good In Everything Award
Oliver Cheshire
It’d be easy to hate on a man with a model physique, popstar girlfriend and wardrobe that looks like it’s restocked nightly by the great and the good of men’s fashion. But it’s because of that wardrobe that we’re choosing to do the opposite. Throughout 2017, Oliver Cheshire has been one of FashionBeans’ most daring but consistent dressers.
The 29-year-old is a chameleon in every sense, capable of looking just as good in a dinner suit as he would a bin bag. Probably. This year he’s done smart sportswear, Riviera swag and exemplary smart-casual as the face of the M&S Autograph range. The former Calvin Klein frontman even confessed to once wearing a pair of Western boots when we caught up with him earlier this year. Though while the wardrobe is easy to mimic, the cover star jawline is sadly less so and it’s for these reasons, Ollie, that we love and hate you at the same time.
Style Move Of The Year
The Tuck
Not that long ago, the only guys who tucked their T-shirt into a pair of jeans were Napoleon Dynamite, Hank Hill and dorky dads from nineties sitcoms. However, if this year has taught us anything it’s that, in the right hands (and in the right waistband), it’s a move that can take bog-standard style to the next level.
And it’s isn’t just casualwear getting the treatment: rollnecks, track tops and knitwear are all fair game, giving countless options for creating a look that says “I’m casual, but I didn’t roll out of bed like this.” Anyone who says otherwise should get tucked.
Best Collaboration
Uniqlo x JW Anderson
He’s the young, forward-thinking, Northern Irish designer renowned for his quirky and innovative designs; they’re the Japanese high street retailer, revered for creating quality, minimal wardrobe staples at bargain prices. It doesn’t take a style expert to predict that bringing the two together would result in one of the best tie-ups of the year.
And that’s what they did. The 33-piece capsule collection, inspired by British heritage garments, delivered all the building blocks of a good wardrobe: from workwear staples like rugged carpenter jeans to smart un-stuffy overcoats, spliced with classic patterns like tartan, herringbone and collegiate stripes. Uniqlo may be king of the basics, but this collection is anything but.
Biggest Comeback
V-Necks
To leave the house sporting a V-neck any time before AW17 was a surefire sign that, depth-dependent, you were either a golfing pensioner or the cast member of a reality TV show attempting to show off your he-vage.
Suffice to say, neither of those camps is a particularly desirable place to be. But such is the charm of the 1970s revival that menswear’s most reviled neckline has made a Lazarus-like comeback few saw coming.
From chunky designs inspired by vintage cricket and tennis sweaters to smart thin-gauge officewear, now is the time to flick the Vs at the crew neck and send your neckline south.
Woman Of The Year
Tarana Burke
Since October, a swirl of sexual abuse allegations has engulfed some of the most powerful men in politics, entertainment and media. What started with a series of revelations against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein quickly swelled into an avalanche of frank and honest personal stories following a call to action by a group of women dubbed the Silence Breakers.
But the #MeToo movement, which garnered 12m posts, comments and reactions in the first 24 hours, began offline through the work of activist Tarana Burke. A three-time sexual violence survivor, in 2006 Burke founded the organisation that would become Me Too, offering support and advice to victims.
The foundations laid by Burke more than a decade ago have today paved a path that encourages discussion, sparks debate and fosters solidarity between survivors. Making Burke our deserving woman of the year.
Trainer Of The Year
Adidas Futurecraft 4D
Without designers, engineers and scientists (yes, actual scientists) working to create new and innovative sneakers, we’d probably all still be walking around with pieces of cowhide stuffed with grass strapped to our feet.
Ever since Nike debuted introduced its revolutionary Flyknit technology in 2012, footwear bods have been racing to come up with the next big thing and this year, Adidas cracked it.
Developed in Silicon Valley, the German firm’s Futurecraft 4D runner (5,000 of which will drop this month) bears more than a striking resemblance to the immensely popular Ultra Boost model. However, this new iteration is produced using a combination of recycled ocean plastics, 3D printed soles and ‘digital light synthesis’, resulting in something truly remarkable. Not to mention comfortable and wearable.

Best Hair Trend
Low-Effort Hair
Hair-wise, 2017 was fantastic news for both those who cherish an extra 15 minutes of duvet time in the morning, and those tired of shelling out on weekly trips to the barbers.
While painstakingly-styled pomps and sharper-than-sharp fades will never fail to look good on the right guy (see Messrs Malik and Beckham for proof), this was the year messy, easy-going barnets climbed to the top and offered a welcome breath of fresh ‘hair’.
With ultra-groomed out and textured, tousled tresses in, try a French crop (ideal for thicker or less obedient hair) or turn a gravity-defying quiff into something more loose and free-flowing. It’ll be the much-needed break your bank balance, and your alarm clock, have been crying out for.
Watch Of The Year
Tudor Heritage Black Bay Chrono
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This much is true. But that’s not to say you can’t make things better, which is exactly what Tudor did with the all new Heritage Black Bay Chrono.
A hybrid that fuses the aquatic heritage of the Black Bay family with influences from motorsport, the watch is the first of its kind to be powered by a Calibre MT5813 movement: an impressive bit of kit that echoes the technicality of Breitling (who it was produced in collaboration with), but retaining Tudor’s near world-beating value for money.
Swiss, in-house mechanics aside, as well as a riveted steel bracelet the watch comes with a navy denim-style strap that allows you to switch things up at the weekend, adding another level of cost-per-wear to an already versatile ticker. Gentlemen, consider this your go-to watch for 2018 and beyond.
