“Urban Homage” and “Party Essentials” Kits Announced

After a small leak yesterday, The Sims 4 officially announced its next two kits: Urban Homage and Party Essentials.

The first one comes in collaboration with @Ebonix, and is said to bring inspiration on 90s and 2000s fashion from London, UK. The other one, as its name suggests, focuses on party decoration, including a disco ball and a fog machine.

Both kits are coming out next Thursday, April 18th, so we can expect a patch on the 16th. Read the full blog announcement below.

Argyle

Starting off simple, we have argyle patterns. These give off a very mature look (she does wear the skirt to her drivers exam) and they remind me of autumn and back to school (in a good way).

she wears this pattern in skirts and sweaters.

I recommend pairing the brown jumper with a black mini skirt and casual loafers. For the skirt look, a button up top and Mary Janes, maybe throw a blazer on top for colder weather.

Headbands

These go perfectly with her 90s prep girl look. She wears them with her hair straight down

Tank Top over t shirt

Unlike the argyle print, I think that these are more of a juvenile look. That's not the say that they're childish, they're actually some of my favourite of her outfits, but they're definitely less mature than she usally dresses. She wears them for casual occasions and for sports.

Matching Sweater sets

We see her wearing these twice when she's at home, so I definitely think that they're one of her go-to lounge looks. Paired with either mom jeans or a pleated mini skirt

Dark Red Plaid

She wears plaid quite a few times throught the movie (we'll get to those looks later) but these red outfits have to be my favourite. She matches the mini skirt with a long collared shirt and a cropped vest, and the dress with a beret, a shirt and a matching jacket

Eyelet doesn't always agree with me (story for another day) but I think that it's so beautiful and summery and definitely a Beverly hills girl look. Cher wears eyelet in two different ways, 1.)shirt and jeans and 2.) a mini dress.

this season, the contestants will be grouped up and style a person’s outfit sets for a week ! first however, each contestants have to SHOW OFF some of their favorite items in their wardrobe and showcase their personal style ! after this they will get to meet their partner(s) and receive of profile of their assigned individual.

AHN JAEHWA, MIN SOYOUN and SEO YURA: female, early 30s, office worker, her life is mostly centered around her work, she likes to exercise and is currently single. her date will be her first meeting with someone met on a dating application. since she works a lot, her wardrobe mostly consists of comfortable but classic clothes with few colors outside of white, beige, gray and light blue.

HAN HYUNHEE and MOON HAYOUNG: female, mid 20s, stay at home mom of a toddler. for the past three years, her life has mostly been centered around her child. she mostly wears comfortable and casual clothes for convinience and has a good array of jeans. she loves wearing simple t-shirts with pastel colors primarly. since her child is growing up, she wants to find more time to care for herself and her appearance

KIM JINSEO and LIM SANGHYUN: male, mid 20s, newly integrated the work force in marketing. he has an active lifestyle and been dating steadily for 2 years now. he often meets with friends to play sports. he likes to buy the latest trending outfits though he wouldn't be considered a fashion icon.

KIM JINYOUNG and LEE JIHO: male, early 20s, about to begin university after finishing his military service. since bulking up in the army, he currently has only basic clothes that fits him. he doesn't really follow trends, but would like to have a more trendy look. he has a blind date set up by his parents.

MOON JIAH and SON NABI: female, late 10s, last year of high school. she's a shy girl who likes to draw and paint and plans on going in arts design. though her wardrobe is quite simple, she has a lot of unique and colorful items and accessories in it. however, she's the type to put on whatever without caring about the end result and would like to have a more cohesive yet unique style. she's being dragged by two friends to a group blind date.

each group will have to come up with a FORMAL outfit for an official event, a SOCIAL outfit for a event with friends, a CASUAL outfit for a regular day, a DATE outfit. most items will have to come out of the person's own wardrobe, but contestants will get to buy ONE new clothing item for each outfit. an outfit includes the clothes, shoes and accessories.

 at the end of the week, the person will choose if they LIKED or PASSED on the oufit chosen. teams with more LIKES than PASS will received a SPECIAL REWARD and CASH PRIZE.

My brain is back on the exact same bullshit that led me to declare Soul Society should have a train, but I suddenly, desperately need to know if Shin'ou students have a winter uniform.

I am honestly split six different ways over this. First of all, is there a standard-issue over-garment of some sort that is permitted when it's cold out? The uniforms have 3/4 sleeves for Pete's sake, and what could be more picturesque than your little students sashaying around campus in sort of matching cloaks?

As far as I know, there were two forms of outerwear in the Edo era: the haori and the hanten. The haori is lighter, longer, and worn by generally fancier people (and originally only men). The hanten is padded and worn by the working class. According to Wikipedia, in the 1910s, a unisex overgarment called a shosei haori became popular among students, but this was also associated with a movement towards western clothing, so I can't really imagine this trend hitting Soul Society*. On the other hand, this is the same period of time that female students started wearing hakama, although they would do so in the high-waisted style, whereas female Shin'ou students wear male-style hakama. (Complete aside, but I also found a reference to a garment called a tombi coat, popular in the early 1900s, that was very Sherlock Holmes-esque, and anyway, I feel in my heart that Byakuya own wore one of these in his delinquent era)

(1) the section of this page labeled "Mixing of Japanese and Western fashion" says shosei haori were also worn over western suits. (3) Wikipedia claims they were padded, but I didn't find reference to that elsewhere.]

Back to the topic at hand. I feel like Shin'ou would be more inclined toward haori over hanten, because they want to cultivate an air of culture and exclusivity over practicality (and also they don't want to make it seem like the classrooms aren't adequately heated, which they are not). Does everyone get the same color, or it gender-split again? It might look kind of nice to have a darker shade of blue for the boys and maroon for the girls. They could also be the same color with different color linings, although...brown? I guess? Black or white are both right out, since those are Court Guard colors. Shin'ou surely has a seal. Big seal on the back? ::nods:: Big seal on the back.

The other option, of course, is that no, there is no standardized coat. One possibility is that coats are simply not allowed. Another is that you can wear your own outer garment, at least when you're walking around outside of class. This has the nice advantage of allowing the upper class students to display their wealth and also be warm, since Soul Society very rarely lets an opportunity for class discrimination to go by.

(Does Shin'ou have clubs??? Is it possible that there are haori associated with particular clubs, you know, like a varsity jacket? That would slap. Could they at least have patches?)

As far as we know, actual shinigami don't seem to have any sort of official cold weather gear. There is the time that the leadership of Squads 5 and 10 went up on the roof to watch fireworks together-- they all seem to be be wearing something on the spectrum between scarf and shawl; Matsumoto's is furry because she has taste.

On one hand, this might lend credence to the idea of bring-your-own-coat, but maybe not? Do people in the ghost military have more or less dress-flexibility than students (keeping in mind that even the barkeepers in this town wear shihakushou). Shinigami also seem to be generally free to accessorize, which we don't see much of among students.

Maybe the students just wear scarves? Soul Society seems pretty pro-scarf, generally.

I hope you weren't expecting a conclusion to this post, because I don't have one, and my final answer is going to have more to do with whether I decide I want Renji to be wearing a coat in the fanfic that I am working on or if I want him to suffer, but if anyone else has insights or opinions on this topic, I would love to hear them.

Western fashion has often looked to African and African-American culture for inspiration but this time around the world seems to want an official romance with it. Here’s what you should know about when the affair started and how Afropolitans are changing the narrative. 

Western designers have been flirting with African symbols, patterns and fibers since as far back as the 1970s when Yves Saint Laurent created a fashion collection that evoked images of an exotic Africa for non-African audiences. These collections were based on what Western designers imagined Africa to be as opposed to what it really was.

As expected, this cultural appropriation, which was not benefitting African designers or textile weavers in any way created an uproar because it was a one-sided affair and was not mutually beneficial. Africa was the glamorous mistress whom Western designers wanted to profit from but not empower. The resistance also came because no one can tell Africans how to be authentically African. Despite the deep cultural similarities, the countries in the continent share different political climates, geographic realities, languages and weather. Meaning that there is no one single narrative of African reality.

These diverse experiences of Africans gave rise to the term Afropolitan. Afropolitans are young Africans with a global outlook, upwardly mobile, culturally savvy, changing the perceptions about Africa through creative expression and redefining what it means to be African in the midst of a multitude of subcultures. To be Afropolitan means we understand that the world is a global village (heck, we are products of that globalization), and that design inspiration can come from anywhere. However, if the fashion world borrows from Africa we ask for recognition, inclusion and empowerment of African designers and retail brands that have worked hard to keep evolving African style, giving it new currency and new associations. 

With this understanding, let’s take a look at the top 10 Afro-inspired trends for women that have found their way to the retail fashion streets.

#1 - Matching Couple Outfits

Matching or uniform outfits are the status quo for African couples and family members at special occasions such as weddings and birthdays.  Fabric is bought in bulk and made into different glamorous attires by family and friends for an event, to serve as a form of identification, solidarity and love. The world has taken a leaf from this culture by updating pre-wedding photo shoots from matching T-shirts to full matching outfits for couples. on the other hand in winter outfit like boss jacket is the perfect one with the T-shirt for the couple.

#2 - Afro-Pop Culture T-Shirts

Just like African-Americans made hip-hop a dress code, the custom T-shirt era has ushered a longing for expression of different African realities especially by urban African youths. Using personal motifs like hair-do, music and food in bold and unusual ways is now the new cool.

#3 - Boubous & Kaftans

Loose fitting garments worn by African men and women called Boubous or Kaftans have become a wardrobe staple all over the world.

#4 – Tie & Dye

Cultures across the African continent have various tie and dye techniques and motifs signifying varying ideas. Today, these colorful tie-dye prints are a must-have for women all over the world.

#5 - Fringe Love

Traditional African fabrics like Kente. Akwete,  Asooke are woven using different types of threads. The ends of the threads are left to hang out as decorative elements at the base and sleeve of garments. The African fringe has a western cousin but the fringe love is universal.

#6 - Head Wraps

African head wraps are made from local fabric or Ankara prints and tied round the head in an intricate style. The trendy head wraps of today are sewn together as ready-made fashion accessories..

#7 - Wooden Jewelry

Jewelry made from utilitarian products like wood have their inspiration from African sculpting and carvings.

#8 - Neck Rings

African neck rings were worn by the South Ndebele of South Africa as part of their traditional dress and as a status symbol for the wearer. Today, statement gold chokers shaped like rings are a hot fashion trend.

#9 - Ankara Print

Though it is said that these prints were brought to Africa by Dutch textile manufacturers, it is the stylish use of these materials by Africans that popularized the fabric. It was Africans who requested for specific patterns to be printed and it was Africans who helped it evolve and popularized it; we made it ours.

#10 - Head to Toe Monochrome/Matching Sets

Going head-to-toe in one color or pattern is a fashion trend that has its roots in African fashion. Yards of fabric are given to tailors to make matching tops and bottoms for both men and women as day wear and occasion wear. The world has caught this monochrome bug.

Week 11 - Sustainable Fashion: Innovators and Outliers in Fungi, Seaweed, Food Waste and Design

1. How does Fast Fashion impact you directly?

I either see fast fashion frequently showcased in media I take in such as music videos and film/tv work and in turn I end up *wearing* said fast fashion products anytime I find myself on set... And to be honest a good chunk of my wardrobe for a while included brands like SHEIN.

2. Which celebrity brands are doing the most to address sustainability? Which ones are greenwashing?

Over the years, Angelina Jolie has been among the most well-known celebrities to publicly endorse sustainable fashion. In May of last year, she introduced Atelier Jolie, her own line of clothing. As per the official website, Atelier Jolie exclusively utilizes overstock and leftover premium antique fabrics to manufacture their clothing.

There have been numerous occasions where brands will collaborate with celebrities to back their "sustainable" clothing lines, in the end they all almost instantly backfire due to the reality of the working conditions used to make these lines. H&M, SHEIN, Pretty Little Thing, Zara, and BooHoo are just a few among this long list of brands with possible greenwashing history.

3. What are your thoughts on the viability of the Bio-textiles mentioned in articles and video above?

I believe that the Bio-textiles mentioned in the articles are viable as ever when it comes to the pros versus cons. On the plus side, we know that these Bio-textiles are biodegradable, sustainable and eco-friendly and have the ability to mimic other textiles with no issues! The only serious "con" I can think of would be the cost-effectiveness of obtaining and utilizing these bio-textiles on a larger scale.

4. Choose Three Facts gleaned from this post and comment about your own practices with regard to fast fashion and sustainability.

~ Organic cotton, natural fibers, organic hemp, and TENCEL are a few of the most sustainable clothing fabrics, so examining labels is important. (I actually had no idea that this was a fact! Without realizing it I have indirectly tried to already lean towards organic cotton and "natural fibers" in the fabrics I purchase!)

~ The best way to be more sustainable: choose quality pieces that will last a long time over cheaper ones that wear out and quickly go out of style (I have ALWAYS been told this, but in these times this message goes to the back burner FAST (didn't mean to make a pun there) with how frequent trends arise and change in the fashion market, especially in an economy where consumers quite literally help set these trends... I need to remind myself of this tidbit more often.)

~ Younger generations, more cautious about their fashion choices, could become the leaders in sustainable fashion. (I whole heartedly believe this to be true, and believe younger generations can become the leaders of almost every industry known to man.)

5. Include photos from your own sustainable clothing brands, thrift store shopping, dumpster sleuthing outside stores, etc. BE CREATIVE!

I sadly don't own any true sustainable clothing brands but I have created a little list of brands I would love to try out!
