Top Tips for Choosing the Best Sports Bar in Brisbane
Tumblr media
Sports bars offer a unique blend of entertainment, camaraderie, and local culture, making them a popular choice for both residents and visitors in Brisbane. Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or just looking for a fun night out, finding the right sports bar can enhance your viewing experience. This guide provides essential tips to help you choose the best sports bar in Brisbane, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
Understanding Brisbane's Sports Bar Scene
Brisbane's sports bar scene is as diverse as the city itself, offering a range of options from upscale establishments to casual hangouts. The city hosts a vibrant sports culture, celebrating everything from cricket and rugby to soccer and AFL. Knowing the variety of sports events covered and the type of crowd each bar attracts can help you find your perfect match.
Location Matters
Location is crucial when choosing a sports bar. Central Brisbane boasts a lively atmosphere with bars close to public transport and major attractions, while suburban venues offer a more relaxed setting. Consider the convenience of getting to and from the venue, especially on game nights.
Screen Size and Quality
The best sports bars invest in high-definition screens and state-of-the-art sound systems to deliver an immersive viewing experience. Look for bars with large screens visible from every angle and additional projectors for major sporting events.
Variety of Sports Coverage
A top sports bar should offer comprehensive coverage of both international and local sports, ensuring you never miss a match. Whether you're into the Premier League, NRL, or NBA, the bar should cater to a wide range of sports enthusiasts.
Atmosphere and Ambience
The atmosphere can make or break your sports bar experience. Some bars offer a family-friendly environment, while others cater to an adult audience with theme nights and live music. Choose a bar that aligns with your preferences for an enjoyable evening.
Food and Drink Options
Good food and a wide selection of drinks are essential for any sports bar. From classic pub grub to gourmet offerings, the menu should cater to all tastes. Look for bars with drink specials and craft beer selections to enhance your experience.
Seating and Viewing Areas
Comfortable seating and well-designed viewing areas are key for enjoying long games. Opt for bars with spacious layouts, private booths, or VIP sections for a more exclusive experience.
Customer Service
Efficient and friendly service is crucial, especially during busy game nights. Staff should be knowledgeable about the sports being shown and attentive to your needs throughout the event.
Community and Fan Base
Joining a community of fellow sports fans can greatly enhance your experience. Look for bars that host fan club meetings or special events to connect with like-minded individuals.
Promotions and Specials
Take advantage of promotions and specials, such as happy hours and game day discounts. These offers can provide great value and add to the overall enjoyment of your visit.
Technology and Connectivity
In today's digital age, having access to Wi-Fi and betting facilities can be a plus. These features allow you to stay connected and place live bets during the game.
Safety and Cleanliness
Cleanliness and safety measures, particularly in light of COVID-19, are non-negotiable. Choose bars that adhere to health guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone.
Reviews and Recommendations
Online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations can provide valuable insights into a bar's atmosphere, service, and overall experience. Research before making your decision.
Unique Features and Facilities
Some sports bars offer unique features, such as sports memorabilia displays or interactive games, adding to the venue's appeal. These elements can significantly enhance your visit.
Family and Group Friendliness
If you're planning to visit with family or a group, look for bars that accommodate children and offer group booking options. This ensures a comfortable experience for everyone involved.
Loyalty Programs and Memberships
Loyalty programs and memberships can offer perks such as discounts, priority bookings, and exclusive access to events. Consider these benefits when choosing a sports bar.
Conclusion
Choosing the best sports bar in Brisbane requires considering several factors, from location and sports coverage to food, drink, and atmosphere. By following these tips, you're sure to find a venue that offers the perfect blend of entertainment, comfort, and community. Whether you're cheering for your favorite team or enjoying a night out with friends, the right sports bar can make all the difference.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Meet the man behind Brisbane's new queer bar Come to Daddy
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/meet-the-man-behind-brisbanes-new-queer-bar-come-to-daddy/
Meet the man behind Brisbane's new queer bar Come to Daddy
Tumblr media
Billerwell Daye the owner of the new queer bar Come to Daddy, spoke to QNews about the new venture on Brisbane’s southside.
When walking into Brisbane’s new LGBTQIA+ venue, you’re greeted with a large neon “Daddy” sign above the door. There’s no mistaking which bar you’re at.
Welcoming me at the front counter for our chat was Billerwell, the owner. He was wearing a black polo shirt and large black glasses while sporting a long beard with his arms covered in tatts.
He isn’t the stereotypical “scene queen”, so I wanted to know why he decided to get into the business of opening up a queer bar.
“Oh, it started a long time ago, started when I had my old bar John Mills Himself in the city,” he tells me.
“So in the process of kind of winding that one down and doing another one, I basically wanted to feel comfortable behind the bar. It just meant that I could be at home and ease here, being an older man in a young hospitality kind of world.”
Finding the right place on Montague Road in West End took him around 18 months, with his main focus being the south side of Brisbane.
“We were predominantly looking around West End as there’s a bit of a hole on this side of the river. This just had the right vibe and there wasn’t really much over this side catering for the community,” he says.
How queer is the venue?
Despite having a name like Come to Daddy it’s always good for the LGBTQIA+ community to know it’s a safe space for them, so I ask how he would describe the venue.
“It’s an inclusive space, so I would say it is a queer venue but it’s not exclusively queer. We want the local community to be here. Whether they are a part of the rainbow family or not but it is for the queer community,” he explains.
“Being a gay man as well I wanted to feel comfortable and have somewhere for my friends to go because I have a lot of friends that were kind of discussing ‘Oh, I wish we had something else in Brisbane.’”
The venue has got off to a great start with weekends particularly busy with drag nights and DJ sets. Throughout the week there is also live music, karaoke and a kitchen open at all times.

Fabulous branding
The set-up works well for entertainment with a great view from every spot inside the bar. The stage itself has a backdrop of a fabulous stained glass window of the Come to Daddy branding.
I ask where the branding came from and he tells me a French illustrator friend created it a few years ago and he took inspiration from it.
Although not his design, Billerwell himself created the stained glass window after completing a course and making it over four months under his house. An impressive feat!
Punters can also purchase merchandise from the bar with the illustration.

Future hopes
I finished our chat by asking what he hopes in both the long and short term for the venue.
“Long term want to be here for as long as I possibly can. Short term, just to be embraced by the community as we have been so far and able to host great nights and be a social club and safe space for the community.”

Straight Draw
I didn’t inherit my father’s love of horse races.  I saw Dad lose more than win.  I valued the money I earnt too much to squander it so.  In fact, Dad’s addiction, that was how I saw it, really irritated me as a child.  He commandeered the radio every Friday night to hear which horses were listed to run that Saturday.  Consequently, I missed sequential episodes of my radio stories.  Then all day Saturday, he listened to the races ran in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.  At the time, I found the race caller’s constant chatter annoying.  Later as an adult, I realised my father looked forward to little else in his modest life.  He worked hard labour in the heat, cold and dirt day in and day out.  He earnt his time listening to the radio whilst sitting in a cool spot on the veranda.
Later Saturday evening, whilst I worked, I overheard Dad’s conversations with his mates whilst they chugged beers in Mattie’s bar.  They analysed horses’ forms, their wins and losses, the qualities of the various race courses and the bookmakers’ odds.  Some horses ran well on dry tracks and others on wet.  Consequently, I knew everything there was to know about the sport.
When the Melbourne Cup Race approached annually, energetic discussions and an infectious air of excited anticipation invaded the bar.  The men spoke of little else in the six week leadup.  Twenty-four horses would line up for the most famous race in Australia and run three thousand two hundred metres, about two miles back then.  Not only would the men lay bets with the local but illegal starting price (called an ‘SP’) bookmaker on the day, they bought tickets in sweeps, which popped up at businesses around the community.  It seemed the only establishment not running a sweep was the church!  A sweep was akin to a blind lucky dip.  Lots of tickets were sold but only tickets were drawn for the number of horses in the race.  The remaining tickets lost out.
The Station Master at Bethania Railway Station organised the biggest sweep around.  He sold tickets for weeks ahead at two shillings each to anybody willing to cough up such an extravagant amount.  By comparison, two bob usually bought you five tickets in a raffle.  Nevertheless, all the local Railway men bought at least five tickets if not ten.
In 1957, this race fever caught me in its grip too.  I was fourteen and wanted to join in the men’s excitement.  I deliberated for several days if I should purchase one two shilling ticket.  I only earnt three shillings for my Saturday morning shift at the refreshment rooms.  Besides, my odds were extremely poor; one ticket versus the hundreds sold to score a horse then one horse against twenty-four to win one of the three places.  Foolishly, I did buy one ticket, just one.  I told nobody about my gamble and hid the ticket in my money tin.
The day before the Melbourne Cup, the Station Master drew the twenty-four horse names from all the tickets he had sold in front of a crowd of ticket holders.  I wasn’t present but my father was of course.  Dad arrived home miserable.  He grumbled he had lucked out again and hadn’t secured a horse in the draw.
He then said, with a quizzical look on his face, ‘Jakob, you drew a horse though.  It’s Straight Draw.  However, the odds of it winning aren’t good.  Sorry lad.’
I felt down too.  I had wasted two precious shillings.  That was a lesson to myself.  Nevertheless, I had a horse to cheer on tomorrow.
The next day, I thought of little else.  The race was scheduled to be run twenty minutes before school finished.  The school had no radio so the students couldn’t listen to it.  The school teacher wouldn’t have allowed this anyway.  Alas, news of which horses had placed in the Cup travelled quickly.  As I walked my bicycle to the school’s front gate, I heard somebody yell that Straight Draw had won the Melbourne Cup.  Excitement bubbled up inside me.  I had never been so excited before.  I couldn’t believe my luck to score the winning ticket.
Dad walked with me to see his mate, the Station Master.  Even he was beaming!
Some loitering locals weren’t impressed however that I had won the sweep.  They suggested not so politely that my ticket should be disqualified because I was a minor and not legally entitled to bet.
The Station Master firmly replied, ‘The boy bought his ticket fair and square with money he earnt like everybody else.’  He then handed me a considerable amount of dosh with a broad smile.
I didn’t know it yet; but I’d need that money soon.  It would help change the direction of my future.  My win certainly was a miracle.

Australian Embassy denied us visas, laments ANFASSC
Tumblr media
The National President of the Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club, Abayomi Ogunjimi, has lamented the club’s inability to support the Super Falcons at the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, after they were denied travel visas by the Australian Embassy. Despite the visa setback, Ogunjimi praised the resilience of the Falcons, who secured a hard-fought victory over co-hosts Australia in their second group game. Despite being outnumbered in the stands, the nine-time African Champions emerged triumphant with a 3-2 victory in Brisbane on Thursday. Following the game’s conclusion, Ogunjimi held a press conference at the ANFASSC Secretariat in Surulere, Lagos. He expressed deep disappointment at the manner in which the supporters club was barred from attending the first two games, particularly the match against co-hosts Australia. He alleged that the Australian Embassy deliberately kept them away, despite the supporters’ club fulfilling all the necessary requirements by submitting the requested documents through the online portal provided by the host nation. “Their game plan is so obvious, the Australian Embassy are keeping us away intentionally, we would have been on ground to cheer our darling team to victory today (Thursday), but with or without us, our ladies stood tall and silenced their crowd. Football is not a do-or-die affair. We compete, we catch fun, we strive to thrive, but it’s sad that our entry documents have not been granted,” Ogunjimi said. While appreciating the Nigeria Football Federation’s efforts, Ogunjimi urged the country’s football body to do more to prevent such situations in the future. Nonetheless, Ogunjimi remains hopeful that the visa issue would be resolved before the Falcons’ last group game against the Republic of Ireland on Monday morning. He added that were still hoping to travel to Australia if the Australian Embassy finally granted them visas, but called on the NFF to help the club secure a refund of the money spent on match tickets for the group stage, if they were not granted the visas. “If the Australia Embassy can still have a change of mind and consider that we are patriotic supporters club members that have travelled far and wide and revisit our documents and issue our members travel visa, so that we can cheer our team to the level of the final, we will appreciate it. I think if they can achieve this type of result against the host nation without us, they can definitely get to the final if we are there. However, I think we deserve a refund, because we bought tickets for over 100 people,” Ogunjimi added. Read the full article

The Many Wonderful Benefits of Using Steel Bars
Tumblr media
What’s a house or 4-storey building without – steel bars! Well, without it, the structure would literally fall like a house of cards. For centuries, the construction industry has long been aware of the many perks of the steel bar Brisbane, and how essential it is in stabilizing and setting up concrete structures. So, let’s talk about the many wonderful perks of using steel bars.
It Provides Ample Support to Structures
Although the steel bar Brisbane is very much commonplace, it actually has a lot of advantages, which makes it one of the most dependable materials in structural applications. Steel bars sport an unremarkable tube-like design with several ribbed patterns on it, making it a crucial element in creating impact-resistant buildings and other structures.
Steel bars can be found in foundations, columns, bases and wall paneling. Often times, a single steel bar Brisbane would be connected to multiple rebars in order to form a framework or pattern which gives the structure more stability.
The unique design of the steel bar Brisbane is what makes it very suitable for reinforcing strength to the qualities of concrete.  The rebar’s patterned and textured finish is designed to strongly adhere to the composition of concrete.
Once the material has finished setting, the built-in rebar network will allow the structure to stand sturdy and strong, and have the ability to withstand any external stresses which may affect the entire building system. Like, steel bars help keep buildings standing in the event of a strong earthquake.
 High Ductility
Ductility is a term that’s often times linked or associated with structural materials. It is defined as “the ability of a material to withstand breakage even after it has undergone deformations on its appearance.
On the other hand, bare concrete alone will not be adequate to support a structure, because it has very low ductility. And, due to the brittleness of the material, it will be more prone to cracking and other forms of damage, especially with it is exposed to other environmental conditions or situations.
Like for example, the presence of moisture can lead to increased gaps in the concrete’s aggregates, which eventually can cause it to physically break down. Unlike concrete, steel is highly ductile, because steel has an additional carbon component which can easily increase its ductility, and allow it to effectively resists against bending and compression forces that are meant to break the material.
 Impact Resistant
When constructing buildings, homes and other structures, it’s important to note that the structure is able to protect itself against any impact damages which not only affect its appearance, but also its functionality.
When combined with other durable and dependable construction materials, the steel bar Brisbane is critical in allowing a building to attain high impact resistance. Well, apart from the quality of the steel bar Brisbane, the building should also be able to meet several compliance guidelines set by government authorities and industry associations.
This explains why it is rare that one sees a concrete building that’s quickly destroyed or damaged even after experience a significant level of impact, like an earthquake or hurricane.

The Silver Dollar Nightclub and a family atmosphere
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/the-silver-dollar-nightclub-and-a-family-atmosphere/
The Silver Dollar Nightclub and a family atmosphere
The first gay bars I went to — places like the Silver Dollar in the late 1970s — were wildly different to the clubs of today – certainly they had a family atmosphere.
There was lots of seating — somewhere comfy for Nan. It was not unusual to see older folk on a night out. After all, Queensland clubs were legally restaurants. Premier Joh Bjelke Petersen was opposed to excessive alcohol drinking.
The Brisbane gay and lesbian population, or the kamps, as they tended to term themselves, arranged discreet parties that, sadly, did risk police raids. One party at Norman Park arranged by the notorious Freda Mae West got broken up by later Commissioner Terry Lewis. Equally notorious characters like Dame Sybil von Thorndyke and Toye De Wilde hosted inner city events which often ended with queens hoiking their skirts and leaping picket fences to escape the cops. Events like that inspired young queens to arrange remote events like the famed Queens Ball at Mt Tambourine to escape the authorities.
With the opening of more discreet events in the late seventies, Brisbane’s kamp population found a better level of protection.
Usually, a business conglomerate big enough not to worry about the Country Party owned a pub as one of a chain. Or a venue owner might make sufficient occasional payoffs to the local cops to feel protected from the forces of the law.
Sunday was a notoriously bad night for grog sales in Brisbane. Joh didn’t want to allow the church’s competition, so pubs opened for a maximum of four hours.
Drag Shows
The few kamp venues ignored liquor laws and began ignoring the laws.
Army Dentist
Openly gay guys and lesbians had no problems coming to the Silver Dollar. But some kamps still preferred ostensibly straight venues. A gay army dentist from New Farm hesitated to haunt the legendary Brunswick gay haunts after dark.
So when he learned of the near-monthly drag shows some of us worked at in the suburbs or regional southern towns, he became a regular whether the show was in Hervey Bay or on the Gold Coast hinterland.
The events were often on a Sunday, and designed to benefit a local sporting team. With the venues far enough away to avoid the attention of the wallopers, everyone made money.
I often chatted with the army dentist during the night. He explained that he went there to meet guys who thought: Oh, a female impersonation show. There’ll be guys there who like dicks. But to all appearances, it was just a nice family show raising money for the local sporting team.
There’d be no action until after it was all wrapped up for the night.
So, the dentist chatted to me, checked out single male customers and made his plans for later.
One night, he told me he had someone who wanted to meet me.
A young soldier who’d booked for a dental consultation at the barracks had asked if he was gay.
A straight transvestive
Yes, he said.
Do you know any transexuals?
The young bloke was a straight transvestite — a bloke who liked to wear female clothing and have sex.
23, tight jeans, army crew cut, the dentist was disappointed to miss out, but always a nice guy and ready to help out others.
Peter, as he was named, turned up to the next show at Ipswich.
OMFG. We didn’t say that then. But if we had!
Later, he offered a lift home to New Farm.
In bed, he stroked my lacey skirt and praised my sexy knickers.
“They won’t taste too good,” I said. My dick’s been taped back for 4 hours.
But then he licked the tape from it and ever so gently licked the beast free.
Finally, he offered a view of his knickers.
“My knickers are gorgeous, too. ”
They were!
I burst into tears.
“You’re wearing women’s underwear.”
“I’m a woman.” I cried.
It was all a little confusing, but I soon felt a greater level of understanding as his tongue snuck back below my waist. In a grand finale, he wiped some lube over my cock, put his hands on my shoulders, bounced up and down three times, and shot across the room three times.
I’d never known anything like it! In the next few weeks, I passed him around to numerous friends.
I told you seventies bars had a family atmosphere.
