Let's talk about Jump GIGA

Jump GIGA covers, 2016-2024. Volumes are published (left to right per row) as Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn releases, with 2018 and 2019 briefly breaking the pattern by having three Winter and three Summer volumes each. 2023 has an Early Spring volume in addition to the standard four.

So, people have pointed out that the 2024 Spring cover is, uh, not like other covers.

But I've only seen comparisons to other MHA GIGA covers and MHA Weekly Shonen Jump covers. Out of curiosity for what GIGA's typical marketing aesthetics might be, I put together a comparison between all of Jump GIGA's covers to date.

And, um. Some things stand out, to say the least.

First, let me clarify what Jump GIGA even is: it is a seasonal magazine from Shonen Jump, published separate from Weekly Shonen Jump. SJ is an absolutely massive brand and they have a number of magazines serialized outside of the most well-known weekly magazine.

The content of Jump GIGA is primarily made up of one-shots and spin-offs. From the beginning, a lot of the appeal has been the cool cover illustrations which showcase special merchandise that comes with the purchase of GIGA. Usually the cover also promotes big things going on related to the WSJ series, like movie events, new games, or special figurines for sale.

The marketing aesthetic has been clear from the start: the cover consists of one core illustration and a number of ads surrounding it. Most often you get a cover illustration of a protagonist, and then ads and merch for other series, e.g. Food Wars protagonist cover with One Piece film promotion and Haikyuu!! merch.

The purpose of this marketing direction is pretty obvious. Spin-offs and one-shots are not likely to generate a ton of interest consistently, so they lure people in with the cool covers and tempting limited edition merchandise of the series they already know and love. In this way, highlighting one series with the cover and different series with the merch makes sense, because maybe somebody doesn't care about Food Wars, but they definitely want those Haikyuu!! stickers, stuff like that.

Starting from 2020's Autumn volume, you can see a shift. For the first time, basically all of the merchandise is for the cover series. The Demon Slayer manga had already ended five months earlier in May, but a two-chapter spin-off was scheduled for release in WSJ during October. This GIGA was released exactly one day before the second chapter was published and it capitalizes on the hype.

After this point, only MHA and Jujutsu Kaisen dominate the cover and the merch in quite this way, with Black Clover getting attention last volume as a way to highlight the fact that it actually switched syndication from WSJ to GIGA.

Anyway, most commonly the cover illustration is a solo shot of a core cast member (usually but not always the protagonist), and if it's not a solo, it's a big cast illustration.

Only a few covers focus on two characters, and usually it's a crossover as opposed to characters from same series sharing the limelight.

Here we've got Food Wars' protagonist with the main characters from Dr. Stone and Act-Age.

The two covers most similar to the Izuku & Kacchan cover are 2022 Winter and 2023 Autumn.

Winter depicts the main trio of Blue Box in a seasonally-appropriate aesthetic. Not gonna lie, this one kinda makes me laugh--Blue Box is a romance and sports manga, and even though Christmas has a romantic air to it in Japan, instead of depicting any sort of like, hesitant but hopeful romantic energy between the heterosexual couple that actually get together later in the series, they focus primarily on the two girls being cute with the guy is a wee footnote? I mean, all right.

Meanwhile, Autumn depicts one of the protagonists with the series antagonist with a typical cool action style. I'm not very familiar with JJK, but I hear these two have got Some Drama going on, so, there's that.

The merch itself has also evolved over the years. Stickers and posters were present early on, but they have since expanded to decorative folders and now acrylic stands and coasters. 2021 Summer sees the first time the cover illustration is marketed as merch, with the Jujutsu Kaisen cover included as a decorative folder.

Right after that, the Kacchan cover of 2021 Autumn is included as a poster alongside earlier covers featuring Todoroki and Izuku.

2023 Summer's cover is a huge, wrap-around MHA cast illustration and it was published three days after chapter 396 came out, strategically timed to highlight the big shift in the final battle as Ochako vs Toga ends and All Might vs. AFO begins. Merch includes a decorative folder of the wrap-around cover and character motif stickers.

And then we get this!?

A duo cover illustration where the cover art itself has been merchandised to hell and back!?!?

Acrylic stand and pin set!?

Double-sided coaster showing bkdk greatest hits!? With volume 29's river scene cover!?

There's also a double-sided poster featuring the Spring cover with the ninth popularity poll art and a decorative bag with the anniversary art. The cover art itself is plastered all over the volume, front, back, and spine, apparently a total of 19 times.

I honestly don't know what to say about this. It feels wild that this is actually what the cover is. Obviously it is a huge marketing push in anticipation of season 7, and Izuku and Katsuki are the most popular characters, but. it just feels... unique.

In the course of Jump GIGA's publication, this direction is kind of unprecedented. Genuinely no one could have expected this. This seems to be the first time there's been this much merch for a cover. And it was a solid fucking move, marketing-wise--it's sold out basically everywhere, everyone is talking about it. And even people who don't follow the series or ship these two can't help but comment on how strikingly romantic it looks!?

I don't know how much say Horikoshi had in what the cover was, but damn it sure feels like he drew this with immense affection. I kind of wonder if he personally pushed for it to be these two, rather than the typical solo shot, cast shot, or even a protagonist vs. antagonist shot.

Aries

Paulina Porizkova (19°): signed the most lucrative partnership in 1988, a $6 million deal with Estee Lauder for seven years, the first Central European woman to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue

Vera Lehndorff (22°): known professionally as Veruschka, she is considered the "first German supermodel.

Alek Wek (10° R): began her modeling career in the mid-1990's, she became one of the most successful black model in the industry. She has been hailed for her influence on the perception of beauty in the fashion industry. 

Taurus

Linda Evangelista (27°): been featured on over 700 magazine covers, Evangelista is primarily known for being the longtime "muse" of photographer Steven Meisel, as well as for the phrase: "We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day." Described as the "chameleon" of the fashion industry, she was part of the "Trinity". Known by her nickname "The Linda".

Naomi Sims (25° R): was the first African-American model to appear on the cover of Ladies' Home Journal, which occurred in November 1968, and is widely credited as being the first African-American supermodel.

Giselle Bündchen (19°, VI House): since 2001, she has been one of the highest-paid models in the world. Vogue credited her with ending the heroin chic era of modelling in 1999. In 2007, Claudia Schiffer called Bündchen the only remaining supermodel. She has appeared on more than 1,200 magazine covers.

Ines de la Fressange (19°, IV House): the first model who had an exclusive contract with a fashion house, Chanel. She terminated the relationship with the fashion house and has gone on to design for Gaultier.

Bella Hadid (6°, XII House): she began her modeling career in 2014 and walked in major fashion show for designers such as Chanel, Dior, and Marc Jacobs.

Libra

Lauren Hutton (8°, III House): signed a modeling contract with Revlon in 1973, which at the time was the biggest contract in the history of the modeling industry

Claudia Schiffer (17°, XI House):  became the face of Guess, which gave her mainstream recognition. “In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognize the girls,” she once said. Appearing on more than 1,000 covers over the span of her career, Schiffer is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the model with the most magazine covers.

Beverly Peele (9° R): rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s, as a supermodel, appearing mostly in Mademoiselle and Elle magazine. She appeared on over 250 fashion magazine covers including Vogue and Harpers Bazar.

Twiggy (5°, IV House): with her expressive doe eyes, she was crowned “The Face of 1966,” voted British Woman of the Year, and found immediate fame all over the world.

Anna Bayle (13°): became one of highest paid models in the late 70's. She has been described as being one of the first Asian supermodels (she's filipino). Bayle became known for her unique runway walk, which The New York Times described "as if she were crushing a cigarette butt with each step down the runway".

Capricorn

Tyra Banks (27°, VII House): the first black model to appear on the cover of a "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit issue and the first black woman to be featured on the cover of the "Victoria's Secret" catalog.

Cindy Crawford (28°, VII House): known for her trademark mole just above her lip. Her girl-next-door aesthetic was so in demand, she fronted nearly every campaign imaginable, from Calvin Klein to Pepsi.

Aquarius

Barbara Goalen (23°, XI House): is considered the first British supermodel. With her striking features and wasp-waisted frame, she epitomised post-war glamour and modelled for both Dior and Balenciaga.

Kate Moss (7° R): rose to fame in the eary 90's as part of the heroin chic fashion trend. She is known for her waifish figure and role in side zero faschion. She has inspired cultural depiction including a 18 carat gold statue of her, sculpted in 2008 for a British Museum exhibition. She was part of the 'Big 6' together with Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer.

Todays fossil is a replica Voay tooth. Also known as the horned crocodile, the voay is an extinct genus of crocodilian which lived throughout swamps, rivers, wetlands, and coast regions of Madagascar until as recently as 50 A.D. It is on this massive island that the voay lineage became isolated and split off from crocodiles back in the Oligocene some 25 million years ago. Reaching upwards of 16ft (5m) in length and 500lbs (226kg) in weight the voay is the largest predator known to have roamed Madagascar since the extinction of the non avian dinosaurs and would have feed upon Fish, Birds, Amphibians, Fruit, Mammals, Invertebrates, and Other Reptiles. It sported a sorter and broader skull than most modern crocodiles with a distinctive pair of boney head crest. It also had much more robust, strongly built legs indicating that the voay likely spent almost as much time on land as it did the water. Admittedly inaccurate Toy made by creatology.

My perspective

For advice I have, find environments where the social structure is comfortable for you. My example is that I like sports and can feel comfortable in athletic settings if I’m not triggered. Primarily though, don’t de-value yourself as a person people want to be around.

Autistic people often face a lot of messaging that affects self image and esteem in regards to friendships and relationships in general. Give yourself respect and grace, that stuff is really hard when it’s internalized so remember to call yourself on it. 💗

Also @through-thick-and-quinn you and I have had a lot of exchanges on here and you’re genuinely one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, I’d like to talk whenever, and consider you a friend.

Ok hold on tight fellas, a few months ago I was basking in the glory of the Tom and Jerry meet Sherlock Holmes movie having surprisingly gorgeous animation and a Holmes and Watson with genuine chemistry.

I've got a new favourite "Why in the world does this try as hard as it does" animated Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

Sherlock Holmes and the Great Escape (or sometimes i've seen it translated as the Great Jail-break?), animated in Hong Kong, released in 2019.

What you need to know about this movie:

For some reason, Sherlock Holmes is cosplaying as Yellow Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist throughout. In fact, there are a number of shots that I think are direct references to Fullmetal Alchemist. I have no idea why this decision was made.

Watson is a rather effeminate pink cat who sports this delightful bow tie/bowler hat/cropped trousers ensemble. He is somehow still definitely John Watson, transmogrified into a femme anime cat person.

Despite being a world full of multicoloured anthropomorphic characters, characters can be murdered in this movie? There are actual guns that look like guns? Systemic causes of poverty are considered? The law is not always just? Prisons do not work? I mean I'm not saying any of these issues are addressed in an especially sophisticated way, but I wasn't expecting them to be addressed at all!

Actual Moments of Pathos?!!! !!!!!!!

These characters aren't actually called Mrs Hudson and Wiggins, but they are definitely Mrs Hudson and Wiggins.

There is an Arsene Lupin-esque gentleman thief character who I genuinely like.

As part of the mysteries there are animated illustrations of basic physics, like what happens to molecules when water is frozen or air pressure changes. Science education ++

Pink Femme Catson gets a Reichenbach moment where he gets to scream his Sherlock's first name dramatically. Of course.

This happens:

"It seemed to me that in that moment, my dear friend anthropomorphic anime Edward Elric ripoff Sherlock Holmes was more nearly moved by the softer emotions than I had ever seen him."

So yeah that was an unexpectedly wild ride.

soo i looked into the blockout/digitine stuff that's happening over on tiktok and the creator that made the "let them eat cake" video made an apology saying that she was only at the met gala as a "pre-host" to do interviews and such and wasn't actually invited. while that's still a wild claim because normal people don't get to even be near that stuff, i looked into her more because all i know is she's a tiktoker, so maybe this just came from her making silly videos on the internet and happening to gain a large following?

meet haley kalil. note the man in this picture. this is her now-ex husband, matt. matt retired from the NFL in about 2019 after playing in about 82 games. for four years, she was married to an NFL player, and a retired one for three more.

here's haley in sports illustrated magazine. she's a model. she even signed to modeling agency Wilhelmina Models in 2018 and stopped working with agencies in 2023. she took part in the 2009 Miss Minnesota Teen pageant, which is the earliest career milestone listed on her wikipedia page. she ran again the next year and was crowned.

the earliest modeling experience on her page is from the 2017 sports illustrated swim search. she ended up being one of the two winners, meaning she got as far as being a rookie model for the magazine. she got to be in different sports illustrated shoots for five years in a row. she was in an apparel debut in 2017, a model search shoot in 2018, and finally as a rookie model 2019-2021.

and look at that, she even has her own imdb page.

all of this to say it relieves me to see more people waking up to the fact that celebrities just don't give a shit about them and that no matter how much they say "i'm just like you!" they're really not. no matter how much they play up relatability or say they're less famous or whatever, they are still out-of-touch with the reality much of the world faces. if you think these people care about you, you better take a good look at them and decide whether you really believe that.
