Western spotted skunk lying against rock near cactus, ca. 1965
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Mustelidae; Genus: Spilogale; Genus species: Spilogale gracilis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 23-34 cm; Identification: The Western spotted skunk is mostly black with variable white spots and stripes on its body; Habitat: Wastelands, brush, wooded areas; Diet: Omnivore: rodents, birds, eggs, insects, fruit; Reproduction: While mating occurs only during the late summer, females give birth either year-round or only in the spring depending on their location. Implantation of the fertilized eggs is delayed, followed by a four-month gestation period. On average, 4-5 young are born at a time; Social Structure: The skunk, as a general rule, is not a social animal; but the spotted skunk is more social than other skunks, and it will share dens in the winter; Behavior: Spotted skunks are nocturnal. Although they are mainly terrestrial, they will sometimes take shelter in trees. If threatened, a skunk will stamp its front feet, raise its tail, and walk with stiff legs. It will then spray a foul-smelling substance, aiming for the attacker's face; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A skunk's spray can cause intense irritation of the eyes and temporary blindness. Their aim is accurate up to 2 meters. Rabies is commonly carried by skunks in the United States.

There’s something about Ezra and names. Throughout the movie, it’s easy to notice how adamant Ezra is that Cee tell him her name. He asks quite a few times, growing increasingly frustrated when she won’t tell him. I always found this interesting, as it seems like a strange thing to get caught up on. But then I realized -- it’s common for Sketchy People to ask someone (especially children) their name as a way to gain power or influence over them, usually disguised as friendliness or trustworthiness.
The first thing Ezra does with Damon is ask his name. He then proceeds to verbally use Damon’s name eleven times in the ten or so minutes between then and Damon’s death. Ezra most often uses Damon’s name when bargaining, specifically at the beginning (when Ezra is trying to get information from him) and at the very end when Damon gains the upper hand. There is a brief period in between when Ezra is engaging in very casual, friendly conversation, learning more about Damon and sharing his own anecdotes. He doesn’t use his name even once during this brief conversation.
Ezra uses people’s names as weapons. He uses them to try and worm his way into people’s heads (”Does this mean the deal is off, Damon?” “Damon your girl is scared, you should listen to her.” “It’s a shame, Damon”), calls them by their name to connect with them, to grab their attention, to try and manipulate them. So, when he’s put in a shitty situation with a teenage girl whose nerves are clearly one breath away from frying, it makes sense that he’d want to know her name. Easier to connect with her, easier to get her to trust him, easier to manipulate her.
But it’s only well into their reluctant partnership that he actually does get her name. And do you know how many times he uses it during the movie? Once. One time, that’s it. Even when they continue working together, Ezra doesn’t use her name against her -- doesn’t even need to, because at that point they’ve both unconsciously decided that they’re going to work together.

Been thinking about theriantrophy today
I feel like I should explore more creatures maybe? I've always stuck with demons, dragons (mainly fire and poison ones because I feel super connected to those elements specifically) and spotted skunks because those I'm certain of and familiar with but I feel like being therian isn't a one and done, "I'm a skunk and that's that" sorta thing and more of a trial and error thing which. I should let myself actually do the trial and error
That and also I feel like I haven't really done all that much to embrace being therian/otherkin beyond acknowledging it and I really don't know what to do about that? I know that therian gear exists and foraging and stuff but it's a matter of how do I even get those? Finding things for specifically spotted skunks is really hard for some reason

Introducing, my new OCs!
Tumblr media
These three are something of a trio on the run, members being:
Cody the Lynx. An odd sight, since the animals of Antarctica are so secluded. He’s quite monotone and flat, and insists on doing things alone.
Werner the Hyena. While a rebel, he remains quite the optimist and a bit of a fool. Though he is oblivious to the finer details, his bloodline seems to be that of great significance.
And lastly, Stripes the Skunk! A young combat specialist who's had something of a reputation for thievery. Thankfully, she seems calm and collected.
