The new line of Warrior plushes has gotten me thinking about how darn ugly these things are again
I'm not even talking about quality really, although that is also a huge problem. Especially since the last batch was "accidentally" advertised with an image that was much higher quality than the product people received
But even those higher quality prototypes were also just downright ugly
Tumblr media
Look at these eyes. They look like something you'd stick on your window for Halloween. This is Squirrelflight, known for her deep green eyes. These are yellow with some green stitching at the bottom that more evokes "eye boogies" rather than adding depth.
And this is the prototype, the better quality one. The eyes on the final product are the same, so this was intentional. It's not like they couldn't afford better eyes. This was the design that was chosen.
They're not cute eyes, they're not particularly "cool" either if they were thinking "well a warrior shouldn't be cute," and they certainly aren't realistic, not that I think they wanted them to be. But I honestly can't figure out what they were going for, cuz unless the goal was "ugly" they didn't achieve it.
Tumblr media
It's also just annoying because stuffed animals are everywhere. How hard is it to make a cheap generic cat design with a general shape that looks better than this?
Tumblr media
And don't get me started on how they don't even match the canon designs. They miss the mark even in a series where the only consistent thing about characters' appearances is the inconsistency.
Why does Squilf have dark black stripes? She is rarely depicted even with the faint stripes that most orange cats have. She's NEVER depicted with dark stripes.
Why is Cinderpelt as dark as Ravenpaw? She looks like Crowfeather, not Cinderpelt. The warm gray of her muzzle makes her look old when she was still pretty young when she died.
Why is Leafpool orange? Why is the nose crooked on the plush they chose to do this photoshoot with? (I do like her stripes though. They look much more natural than Squilf's inaccurate ones. And the two colors in her eyes are more similar to each other than any of the other cats', so it looks better)
Ivypool is probably the best out of the six, but why did they choose to stitch around her eyes with the same pink as her scars? They take the one cat that looks passable in my opinion and make her eyes look like they're bulging out of her face.
Harper Collins is so clueless as to as to what their fans want in a way that's almost comical. This is clear with the fact that it took as long as it did to get any plushies at all, and the fact that they keep trying to give Mistystar attention when the fandon largely just wants her to keel over already. Poor girl's almost 17 years old. Most INDOOR cats don't live that long lmao

It BAFFLES me how badly warrior cats handles their merchandise, but SPECIFICALLY their plushies. Despite how much of the vocal fandom is probably around the 16-25 age range, this is ultimately a series for preteens. So I just can't wrap my head around why they'd make plushies for the series the way they did, using very small handful of characters, making them pretty expensive, and having them only release online and sell out quickly.
Like... there's NO way that kids who like warrior cats and are in the target demographic are going to have a good time trying to convince their parents to shell out a decent chunk of money for an online only order of a single plushie of a character the child in question might not like as much as others.
What warrior cats SHOULD do is, instead of large plushies released rarely and in small batches, make a single pattern and just. Make a shit ton of small plushies. Imagine how cool it would be to go to Barnes and Noble to pick up the newest WC book and hey, this one comes with a little plush of the main character for a few extra bucks! Imagine going to a bookstore and they've got a display filled with beanie baby sized warrior cats!
That method would allow a larger audience of people to buy them (Both kids who can't get the big plushies and people who's favorite characters aren't in plushie form yet) while also providing more options for book bundle says, like, buy the whole of the first arc box set and you get a plushie trio of Fireheart/Ravenpaw/Greystripe, or buy a new book when it releases and get a plushie protag. They could still produce the higher quality large plushies, these having more detail and custom patterns, but they wouldn't be the ONLY way to say, get a plushie of Squirrelflight

As a plush collector, the "update" is legit shocking. I'm baffled HOW could they have messed it up that badly?! It's common for prototypes to differ SLIGHTLY from the final product, but this looks like an entirely different pattern for the face/head - almost like a knockoff. Even most indie/Kickstarter-made plushes have better quality control than this. I haven't cancelled my preorder because maybe they'll re-revise and it will still turn out good, and if not I can give them away, but geez...
Yeah it’s really bad that they have done this, Squirrelflight looks like a completely different cat and the quality is drastically different in all the plushes . I honestly think I might email them later and ask them why the initially advertised plushes differ so wildly from the ones they advertised a few days later, most likely after a large portion of people (including myself) has already pre ordered them... I am very sure that was on purpose.
