On through the Balkans - Serbia & Croatia
We had more time in Serbia, a quick day stop, and a bus to Sremski Karlovci. This small town has a number of specialty high schools that kids come from around the country to attend and it's also a bishopric.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But we were there to visit a small family-owned winery and honey producer. We first tasted the honey. It was pretty typical honey. They had honey with ground sesame seeds in it. As a honey, it was not great, but I could see glazing roasted meats with it.
We visited their wine cellar. It was small and damp with mold growing on the walls and the wine barrels. I'm not sure that moldy wine barrels are a positive for making wine. I certainly have never seen it in other wine cellars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we tasted about six to eight of the wines. Most of us were taking one sip of each and then dumping the rest. The dump bucket on the table was brim-full at the end of the tasting. They were pretty bad. So the consensus was that the trip was a waste of time.
Our next stop was Ilok Croatia. (That doesn't work well in this font, it's ILOK.)
There was a nice sunrise to start the day.
Tumblr media
There was only a hotel/restaurant at the dock but we could see a church on the hill in the distance.
Tumblr media
The briefing said that there wasn't much to see in Ilok and then the bus would go to Vukovar, which was the heaviest shelled city in the Balkans wars. Having seen that they tend to preserved the bombed out buildings to remember the war it didn't sound that interesting. A search of visitor comments noted it was "grim." So I skipped the tour.
But we walked over to town. The lower town was very uninteresting. But there was a stairway going up the hill. While Cathie walked back to the ship, I went up the stairs.
At the top was the old fortified town with a church and a number of substantial buildings within the old walls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a nice view of the countryside from the top of the hill.
Tumblr media
As I walked through the upper town, I found members of the tour group who were just finishing up their wine tasting. The reports were very good, so I went in and did one on my own. The tasting had been included in the tour, but I had to pay; a small price to avoid a bus ride and a bombed-out city.
I found that the winery made a whole range of sweetness in the wines from dry, to ice wine. The group had only tasted the dry wines, but I discussed the sweeter wines with the staff and tasted two. The first was in the range of too sweet to be a dry wine and not sweet enough for a dessert wine. But the sweet Trockenbeerenauslesen was very good. In the end, I bought a bottle of the dry and the Trockenbeerenauslesen. I tried to get two of that one, but they were down to their last bottle and were out of the ice wine.
Then a walk back through the upper town and down the stairs.
It was actually pleasant and didn't require a bus ride!
Based on my very limited sampling I would go for the Croatian wines NOT the Serbian.

*ੈ✩‧₊˚Activity description
╰┈➤On October 21st, our geography teacher took us on trip to explore cities Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci. We left Banja Luka at 5:30 am and our trip to Sremski Karlovci lasted for whole 7 hours. Even though it was kind of exhausting, it was worth it because i got a chance to learn a lot about history as well as geography aspects of that place. We visited first ever gymnasium in Serbia, the oldest theological high school, which is created back in 1794, as well as biggest high-school library in whole Serbia, which is in that school. Our tourist guide took us through Church of Sremski Karlovci where we saw beautiful art works and decor on walls.

╰┈➤After that, we went to Novi Sad, specifically Petrovaradin Fortress. We looked around, took some pictures and learned about its history. A fun fact about this fortress is that every year this fortress is a place where Exit Festival is held. I met some tourists that were talking about festival so my friends and I made a promise to visit it next year in July!

╰┈➤We were given around 3,5 hours of free time which I spent on hanging around with my friends, coffee break, lunch and a bit of shopping! I got some souvenirs, enjoyed a nice warm day and for everyone's surprise, met famous youtubers!

Our geography teacher took us to explore the cities of Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci and we learned a lot of interesting historical and geographical facts about the landmarks we visited. It took us 7 hours to get there (including gas station breaks) and just as much to come back, so it was truly an exhausting road trip. The time we actually spent in the cities was great, educating, and really fun. I loved that I had a chance to explore new places with some of my really good friends, and we had about 3 hours of free time to do anything we wanted downtown Novi Sad, and we really used up that time to have fun and eat really delicious food. We visited the grammar school of Sremski Karlovci, which is the oldest grammar high school in Serbia, as well as their theological high school and church. We visited The Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, which was really interesting because that is where the Exit Festival is held every year. We really walked a lot during the tours, and our free time, which is why I think this also qualifies as an activity.

Reflection✔️
It was a really insightful experience that brought a lot of joy into a pretty random weekend, and I feel like I learned quite a lot about the cities I have not visited before. It took a bit of a toll on my sleeping patterns just because the bus ride was way too long, but all in all, I had a lot of laughs with my friends, saw some beautiful buildings and a fortress and it made for a great Saturday.

Geography class and teacher from national program of Grammar school planned to go on a whole day trip to Novi Sad with stopping by in Sremski Karlovci and monastery Krušedol. Even though I am not on national program anymore I decided to go with my previous class becuase we don't see each other as much and I am still learning geography on IB so it was a great opportunity to expand my knowledge.

This trip was a great experience, but it was a little bit exhausting because we were going by a bus and we spent more than 12 hours driving. What I liked the most were three free hours we got to spend however we wanted and it was a great opportunity to improve my managing skills. My friends and I had to make plans together and it brought us closer together. Also, we talked to local people from Novi Sad in order to find best activities and places for us. What surprised us was the fact that there were many tourists too. Monastery Krušedol was a nice experience also because the priest talked to us and told us about the long history of the place. Overall, this was a great adventure for me and my friends (classmates) and we had a great time and I think that traveling is the best way to learn new things about different places and people .

The trip was surprisingly educational, I learned quite a bit about the cities i visited several times before. I also got the chance to see my older brother who lives in Novi Sad so that made my day even better. The journey was really exhausting, it would've been better if we had stayed the night in Novi Sad but we were in a hurry. Overall it was a nice relaxing day and I look forward to the next field trip.

Supreme Guide to Serbian Wine
Tumblr media
Serbia is an effective representative of winemaking in the Balkan spot, with specific terroirs and a mild along with comfortable climate, loan themselves to the prosperous cultivation of together indigenous and overseas varietals. https://apartman-beograd.in.rs/
These are place together by a very customary and often unique procedure for winemaking itself, which results in some wonderful Serbian wines you simply need to experience if you’re visiting! A Brief History involving Serbian Wine
Bicycles of Serbian wines begins before the Serbian people inhabited that territory currently called Serbia.
As far back as this 5th century BC, Greeks brought vines and winemaking with the geographical region which can be Serbia currently, not like up to then, your peoples living at this point were drinking cocktails made of fermented grains, something like beer.
Different amphorae (clay veins used for winemaking) had been also found in the course of excavations of archeological sites around Serbia, their markings signaling that wine ended up being brought here, largely from Thassos, a island in A holiday in greece.
In the 1st 100 years AD, the Roman emperor Domitian identified a monopoly upon wine, thanks to that no Roman state other than Italy, where by he had personal vineyards, was allowed to provide wine - the forthcoming territory of Serbia being among them.
This particular legislation was ultimately removed in the final century AD by way of Marcus Aurelius Probus, born in Sirmium, a Roman community on the territory associated with today’s Serbia. They planted the first grape vine on the slopes from Mons Aureus inside Fruška Gora, which happens to be regarded as the beginning of winemaking in Serbia.
Marcus Aurelius Probus moreover started vineyards in a variety of Serbian territories as well as a varietal named Probus was engineered with Serbia in her honor in modern times. (Editor’s observe: There’s also an unusually tasty winery within Sremski Karlovci focused upon him, included on this subject wonderful day trip out of Belgrade which I do last year)
Should the Serbian people transfered to the region within the Balkan peninsula inside the 6th century POST, they didn’t deliver with them a civilization of wine, however , under the process of Christianization spearheaded by the Byzantine Empire, the Serbian people soon approved wine along with Christianity, as wine has got always played a good central role around Christianity.
In the twelfth century, when the Nemanjić dynasty came to strength in Serbia, winemaking gained much more great importance. At this time, wine is mostly being created by monasteries, which would usually receive vineyards being gift from the lording it over classes, including the Nemanjić family.
In the fourteenth century, one of the most important Serbian rulers, Tsar Dušan the Great, printed the first written legal procedure in the country in the form of Dušanov Zapisnik, and this word contained, amongst other suggestions, the first laws similar to today’s geographical coverage of wines inside Serbia. All old Serbian rulers ended up being very attentive to Serbian vineyards which placed the foundation for winemaking today.
Wine formulation was brought to an end by the Ottoman Empire’s conquering of Serbia in the 14th hundred years, since Islam forbids alcohol consumption.
Right now, the Ottoman Empire tried hard so that you can destroy Serbian vineyards, even going exactly where recruiting special militant forces whose lone purpose was a destruction of vineyards. As Serbs transferred north in an attempt to break free from the Ottoman Empire, they moved with these the wine production within the central and south regions of Serbia at which it was once a large number of prominent.
There are files suggesting Serbian governing officials would provide barrels of bermet and ausburh (two special Serbian vino varietals) with them for the Austrian court to be able to curry favor while using Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Round 1880, the Serbian vineyards were hit down by Phylloxera, a virus of which attacked many Western wine regions, even so the vineyards were rehabilitated in the following yrs.
Despite all of the struggles Serbian vineyards possess endured, they continue even today.

Novi Sad, Serbia
Novi Sad is a city in Northern Serbia on the banks of Danube River. Novi Sad was in the news when it was named European Capital of Culture. The city is quite serene with a handful of things to do in and around.
Since we were there during the festive season, we could see lot of locals shopping. Serbians are lucky in a sense as they have festive fervour for a month almost. Since Serbs are orthodox Christians, their Christmas falls on January 7th. But as we saw everywhere, all the decorations, lighting and malls were decked up even for Dec 25th, which continues till mid Jan.
Cheeky Sweaters were up for sale in all Novi Sad malls:
Tumblr media
As we roamed the city, we could see so many such defunct military truck sheds:

S points to the clock tower in Petrovaradin Fortress:

The fortress nicknamed as Gibraltar on Danube is at the end of Novi Sad and offers excellent vantage views of the city below and pleasant parks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On one of the days whilst we were there, we also took a day tour to Sremski Karlovci a Serbian wine village further north. We did taste many wines and even brought back some Dessert Wines which are mild drinking variety. Sremski is a small village with a patriarch palace , a very famous school and just one pedestrian street:
Tumblr media
We had hired a local Serbian and he drove us to secluded vast landscapes. At one such spot, we saw this old man with his sheep. We never understood each other but we shook hands , smiled and took pictures with him.
Tumblr media
Another day we visited Velika Remeta Monastery where photography was not allowed. We saw 100 year old Nona's who live and work there.  Serbs are quite welcoming and always approving of any picture requests. Beautiful bar counters are everywhere we saw:

If you drive up further north in the country, some of the churches in Serbia will look very Russian:

Back in Novi Sad, we again visited the fortress area on Christmas day, 25th .
Tumblr media
It was a nice day:

People were out walking in the perfectly manicured parks in and around the fortress:

We had a lazy lunch and strolled through the city streets in the evening, Santa was everywhere:

The old part of the city had some stunning wall graffiti as well:
